    A long-established Accommodation offers a calm and relaxing atmosphere.

    Heading to Takayama with rain in the forecast I prefer a quiet, smaller Accommodation where I can truly relax, so I stayed at Iiyama again for the first time in a while. The calm hospitality was just as I remembered, along with the delicious meals and the Onsen—perfect temperature with a pleasantly silky feel. It was very soothing. That said, as someone with lower back pain, I found the chair in the Room quite firm; a cushion might make it more comfortable to sit on. Also, the hand towel at the sink in the Room got wet quickly, so I felt that paper towels might be helpful. Other than that, I was very satisfied. This is an exceptionally reliable Accommodation. Thank you very much. I will visit again.

    Everything was perfect.

    Thank you very much for everything. Choosing this place for a long-awaited reunion with our friends as a couple was absolutely the right decision. We booked two Rooms, and although we spent time together except when sleeping, the space was spacious and comfortable. We got so caught up chatting that we used the bath twice a day, morning and night, and our friends were also impressed by how wonderful it was. Thank you to T, whom M recommended. The conversation was enjoyable, and we truly had a great time—you completely won us over. The four of us were able to enjoy delicious food in a spacious private dining Room. We would be happy if we could see M and T again next time.

    I feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

    Everything was outstanding—the maisonette-style Room, the in-room open-air bath, the shabu-shabu course, the service, and even the Takayama ramen! Next year during Golden Week, we plan to stay in the main building. Next time, we’ll go for an all-beef feast. During Obon, we’ll stay at the annex again and play golf at Shokawa Kogen Country Club.

    Attentive hospitality

    The attentive service was excellent. The meals were delicious as well. The Room also had an open-air bath available at any time, and a massage chair, providing relaxing amenities throughout.

    It was my last birthday.

    I stayed here with my mother for a birthday trip. The Ryokan is a bit far, but the Shuttle Service made it very convenient. We chose the cheapest Room, but it was a spacious suite with two connected Japanese-style rooms, two toilets and two washbasins, plus an outdoor area where we could step out and watch the koi. The entire Ryokan had a warm wooden feel, and my mother especially loved being able to walk around barefoot. All of the staff were cheerful and kind, and we were able to spend our time comfortably from before check-in until check-out. We had our meals in a private dining room, and everything was delicious—we were truly impressed. In addition to the Hida beef, we were happy to enjoy ayu sweetfish (my favorite) and melon in season. And above all, the Onsen was amazing. I had been looking forward to it after reading Reviews, and it exceeded my expectations. We enjoyed it twice including Hanaogi as well, and the water quality was so good that I wanted to stay in forever. Since the men’s and women’s baths switch between morning and evening, we could also enjoy a different atmosphere each time. (It was disappointing that there was a large insect in the open-air bath, so I didn’t use it at night.) We stayed at another Ryokan near Takayama Station the next day, but our skin felt completely different afterward. It took about five and a half hours from Osaka to Hida-Takayama so it felt far away, but this is still a Ryokan I would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    We were completely satisfied with everything.

    We stayed in a Room with a private open-air bath, and the hot spring water quality was excellent—I ended up soaking many times. From the warm welcome, the welcome drink service, and the attentive care from the staff, it was a wonderful Ryokan that made us glad we chose it from the moment we arrived. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    The hospitality is e...

    The hospitality is excellent! The food is outstanding! Wood is used throughout, creating a calm atmosphere. We could really feel the charm of Hida Takayama and had a wonderful time.

    Enjoy a fulfilling holiday away from the Golden Week crowds.

    This is a wonderful Ryokan where you can relax and unwind. Everything was spotless, the amenities were well stocked, and the meals were delicious. It may feel like a lot for light eaters, but there was a great variety of dishes and it was very satisfying. There are no slippers, but socks for indoor use are provided, so if you prefer not to go barefoot, I recommend using them. You may find yourself looking for outlets in the Room to charge your phone and other devices; they aren’t very noticeable, but there are outlets where electrical appliances are placed, so no need to worry. We were grateful to the attendant who helped us with exactly what we needed—no more than necessary—which felt just right and made our stay very comfortable.

    In 2026, Takayama was named one of the “World’s Coziest Cities”—a Ryokan that represents Takayama.

    I couldn’t get a Reservation at Hanaogi, so I stayed at the annex for the first time. I heard that the previous owner started a guesthouse in this building. This is a Ryokan with an indescribably wonderful atmosphere, shaped by the owner’s great sense of style. The head chef—apparently from Kyoto—also served an outstanding menu. Everything was delicious. It was selected as Japan’s only city chosen as “the world’s most comfortable city” in 2026, and among them, I highly recommend this annex and Hanaogi as truly top-tier.

    The price doesn’t match the level of service.

    For an Onsen Ryokan in this price range, I felt the staff training was lacking. Even when passing guests in the hallway, there were no greetings or bows, and to have no one see guests off at departure is simply unacceptable. My honest impression is that this is a disappointing Ryokan that I cannot recommend to travelers who enjoy quality service. I don’t know whether the proprietress is unable to keep an eye on things. The only saving grace was that the young attendant assigned to me was friendly. I hope management will return to the basics of hospitality and raise the overall standard.

    The Room was spaciou...

    The Room was spacious and set over two levels, so we could relax at our own pace. The open-air bath in the Room was also large, and among all the Onsen we’ve experienced, the water felt the silkiest and most pleasant. The meals were a delight for both the eyes and the palate, and everything was delicious. The staff’s thoughtful hospitality was outstanding—this is an Accommodation we’d love to stay at again.

    A memorable stay blending into the snowy landscape

    This is my second stay. Having stayed at various accommodations around the world, this is undoubtedly one of my favorites. The atmosphere of the lobby as you step through the doors and the view of snow-covered scenery truly make you feel, "I've arrived in a snowy country." It feels like stepping quietly into the world of a novel, where extraordinary moments flow. The cuisine reflects thoughtful care and was not only delicious but also a feast for both the eyes and soul. With its calmness, elegance, and warmth, this accommodation itself becomes the purpose of your journey. It’s such a special place that I’m certain I’ll return to experience more chapters of this story again.

    I gave a perfect score of 5 for everything. Having stayed at various accommodations before, this was the first time I experienced such impeccable service in every aspect.     It was a wonderful accommodation.

    We planned a trip to Gifu as a parent and child, wanting to stay at Iiyama-san. The shuttle bus available with an advance reservation was very convenient, and we were grateful to be dropped off at the morning market on our way back. The exterior had a charming and calm atmosphere that was truly lovely. The onsen had a smooth texture and felt incredibly relaxing. Known as "Bijin no Yu" (Beauty Hot Spring), it left our skin feeling silky smooth. The staff were very friendly, providing explanations about the meals as well as sharing information about the morning market and Takayama in a casual manner, making our stay enjoyable. The Hida beef shabu-shabu for dinner was absolutely delicious—a true delicacy! We came with high expectations, but this wonderful accommodation exceeded them in every way.

    Highly Satisfied

    I was more satisfied than the reviews suggested. I enjoyed the bath in the main building as well, but I am glad I chose the annex for its architecture, furnishings, and staff. I loved the quality of the hot spring water and this has become one of the accommodations I would like to visit again.

    We stayed as a couple. It was perfect. As mentioned in many reviews, the quality of the Onsen is exceptional—it's like soaking in lotion. Next time, we will visit not for sightseeing in Takayama but specifically to return to Iiyama-san.

    A long-awaited stay ...

    A long-awaited stay at this accommodation. I was very satisfied with my experience this time. Although there were other guests staying, the overall atmosphere of the accommodation was quiet and calm, with only occasional encounters in the lobby during mornings and evenings. I stayed for a multiple night stay (2 nights), and every meal was satisfying. Not only was the taste of the dishes excellent, but also the presentation, timing of serving, and attention to detail made dining an enjoyable experience. Above all else, the onsen water was exceptional. The silky smooth texture felt like being immersed in a full-body lotion as many have commented before. While the public bath is not large, perhaps due to half of their 15 rooms having private open-air baths (and possibly because most guests during my stay were inbound travelers), it felt almost like a private bath each time I used it—no issues at all! The room was spacious and impeccably clean, allowing for a comfortable stay. The staff provided just enough service to make me feel at ease while responding very politely when asked questions about destinations or sightseeing spots with accurate advice tailored to my needs. Additionally, I found the overall design of this accommodation quite unique—a creative use of retro-style traditional architecture (not thatched roof; perhaps from Taisho or early Showa era?). The ingenuity is fascinating; you wouldn’t imagine such an open atrium lobby inside from its exterior appearance! The zelkova beams and main pillar are truly impressive. After making my reservation (with some changes on my end), they promptly responded via email for confirmation purposes and even called before check-in to confirm everything again—this gave me peace of mind heading there safely! My thanks go out especially to those handling reservations. If you're looking for quiet accommodations in Takayama where you can relax fully, I highly recommend visiting here! If given another opportunity someday—I would love to return again!

    We had a relaxing time as sisters.

    I shared my previous comfortable stay with my sister, and she said she wanted to visit too. We had a wonderful time staying together as sisters. Thank you for the room upgrade. The large public bath was not crowded, allowing us to relax leisurely. We also appreciated the change in the meal menu from last time. The Hida beef sushi was especially delicious and left a lasting impression—I want to eat it again!     Comfortable for single occupancy

    I decided to use a last-minute Reservation because I wanted to enjoy the Onsen and delicious food. It was comfortable and safe even for solo use. I loved the quality of the spring water and enjoyed both the large public bath and the Room's private bath. The meals were also delicious. I look forward to staying again!

    It was an elegant trip...

    We stayed here while visiting Hida-Furukawa and Takayama to celebrate my wife’s 60th birthday. The setting was quiet, and the Onsen was wonderfully soothing. We spent a very comfortable time in our Room with an open-air bath. Our attendant was a new staff member, and she did her very best with the hospitality. She even helped us celebrate my wife’s 60th birthday... We can’t thank you enough. We had such a lovely time, and she felt like a daughter to us—thank you so much. It was the best Accommodation.

    This was my third stay, but it was my first time staying in a room with an open-air bath and having in-room dining. I was very satisfied with the Onsen, meals, and service, and I was able to relax after a long time. I am especially grateful for the excellent service—thank you so much. If I may point out two things: one is that the sound of opening and closing the door of the neighboring room bothered me. The other is about in-room dining; as someone with weak legs, sitting on floor chairs was difficult for me. A table with chairs would have been perfect. During my previous two stays, meals were served at a table in another room. I will visit again—thank you very much!

    Iiyama is the best!!

    I have stayed at the main accommodation twice before, and this time I stayed at the annex for the first time. Each time, I chose the "Beef Feast" for my meals. The service from the staff, including the attendants, is subtle yet attentive and excellent. I always stay after playing golf, and soaking in the private open-air bath attached to the room completely refreshes both body and mind! Even during Obon, I'll play golf in cool Shokawa and stay at Iiyama!!

    I was surprised.

    I had high expectations since it cost nearly 100,000 yen. Although the Room had an open-air bath, there was no washing area, so we had to wash in the indoor bath. Moreover, the floor of the outdoor bath was slippery. The food seemed pre-prepared and was dry, overly salty, and not tasty. While the rice, sashimi, and pickles were good, I was surprised by the heavy use of food coloring in other dishes. It felt like they misunderstood what good service means. The Room was noisy due to sounds from neighboring rooms and loud water flow from outside baths. The most disappointing part was in the morning when a staff member at reception didn’t even greet us—completely ignored us! They should learn hospitality from scratch. While it might appeal to foreign guests unfamiliar with true service standards, for those who know real hospitality, everything felt unsophisticated and rural-like. I left deeply disappointed—it even caused arguments within my family due to frustration during our stay!
