Highly satisfying meals
As a registered tangible cultural property, this Facility has a uniquely dignified retro atmosphere, and we truly enjoyed our stay. Every dinner dish was excellent and delicious, and the courses were served at perfect intervals to match our pace, which we greatly appreciated. What disappointed us was that the in-room coffee was standard drip coffee (most Ryokan and Hotels of a similar level offer Nespresso), and there was no sugar or milk provided. We were also surprised that breakfast felt more conventional compared with dinner. In addition, although an oshibori holder was placed out, no oshibori towel had been set. Finally, the quality of service varied among staff members. For a luxury Ryokan, we feel more training and management are needed. Since both the Facility and cuisine are outstandingly high quality compared with other Ryokan at the same level, we hope other aspects will be improved as well.

Such a wonderful Ryokan you’ll want to keep it to yourself!
Everything—the views, the Room, the baths, the meals, and the hospitality—was outstanding. My whole family kept saying again and again that we had never stayed at such a wonderful Ryokan. First of all, the baths! The view of Otaru spread out below from the open-air bath was breathtaking. (We also really appreciated that the amenities were from a well-known cosmetics brand and that towels were always available.) Inside the Ryokan, there were furnishings that evoked the former prosperity of the Herring Mansion, making it an irresistible place for history lovers. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and I especially can’t forget the potato with butter sauce—a long-loved specialty of this Ryokan. It was such an incredible time that I almost didn’t want to recommend it to others. I definitely want to come back again next time.

The meals were very good Japanese cuisine.
Both breakfast and dinner were excellent Japanese meals. They kindly arranged a great spot with a longer stay in mind, and although we stayed only one night this time, we’d like to stay at least two nights next time. We will definitely return. The bath in the Room was very relaxing, and next time we’d love to visit in winter when there is snow.

Staying at the Herring Mansion has been my long-held dream.
I first learned about the Herring Mansion when I visited Otaru for sightseeing, and I had long wished to stay at Ginrinsou, the Ryokan created from that historic building. This time, I finally had the chance to visit Ginrinsou. Its dignified presence on a hill overlooking Otaru-Chikko was truly moving. Stepping inside, I was immediately overwhelmed by the 75-tatami grand hall, and my eyes were drawn to the artworks displayed throughout the property—almost like being in a museum. From my reserved Room in the new wing and its bath, I enjoyed a panoramic view of the harbor, and once again felt amazed by the scenery. For dinner, I chose French cuisine. The adjacent Grill Ginrinsou is also wonderful: first you’re captivated by a beautiful chandelier, then by the many Meissen pieces and Lladró porcelain figurines on display. The meal featured superbly prepared local Hokkaido ingredients—sea urchin, hairy crab, Ezo abalone, kinki rockfish, branded beef, and seasonal asparagus—and it was one delightful surprise after another all the way through dessert. My friend and I were thrilled; we agreed we’d never had French food that good even in Tokyo. It became an unforgettable trip to Otaru. When I visit again, I would love to stay here once more.

It’s a very enjoyable and soothing experience.
Our stay at Ginrinsou was truly enjoyable and deeply relaxing. The setting, rooms, meals, Onsen, and service were all excellent, leaving us with wonderful memories—we would choose it again.

Staff reprimanding other staff near the front desk (visible to guests).
I have stayed here 4-5 times almost every year, and I think it is a high-level accommodation in Hokkaido. However, during checkout at the front desk, an older female staff member was loudly and emotionally scolding an older male staff member. It wasn’t overheard from another room but happened right nearby, clearly aware of my presence. It left a disappointing impression; such matters should be handled after seeing off guests. For an accommodation that isn’t inexpensive, this shouldn’t happen in front of customers.

The Japanese-style ambiance is soothing.
The open-air bath was wonderful. The location was a bit inconvenient, but there was a Shuttle Service available.

This is my fifth stay in three years, but...
We stayed at the accommodation to host my aunt, who has always been kind to us. The breathtaking view of Otaru Port from the new building's room and the scenery of Asari town visible from the open-air bath in the large public bath were stunning, especially with great weather, which delighted her. The private room bath was also spacious with flowing hot spring water and had windows on two sides, offering an even better view than the open-air bath in the public area. We ended up using it more often. The meals were all delicious, and my aunt was particularly impressed by how refined and flavorful the soup dishes were; both dinner and breakfast left us fully satisfied. However, there were some issues with service. Although we had early check-in as a special benefit, no one was present in the hall when we arrived; it took several calls before someone came out to assist us. The check-in process also took time, so it would have been nice to be offered a towel or a glass of cold barley tea during that wait. During dinner service, there were moments where I questioned how dishes were served or cleared away—especially since our meal started later in the evening when only one other group remained besides us by then. It felt rushed as staff seemed eager to finish for the night; they would clear plates almost immediately after we finished eating each dish without giving much time to relax between courses. Previously during our stay here for dinner arrangements: partitions divided large halls into private spaces or meals could be enjoyed leisurely within private Japanese-style rooms—this time being seated at shared dining areas for both breakfast & dinner felt like a downgrade experience-wise. On departure day though older male staff member greeted warmly while taking photos capturing scenic views around property alongside family members leaving positive impression overall despite earlier hiccups!

Stay in the Ryuo Championship Match Room overlooking Otaru Bay and Ishikari Bay.
In mid-June, during a trip to Hokkaido, I stayed in the special Japanese-Western room "Tsuru no Ma," which occupies the entire top floor of the new building at "Ryotei Onsen Accommodation Ginrinsou," where Sota Fujii, holder of seven major titles, played a Ryuo match. The 270-degree panoramic view from the room overlooking Otaru Bay and Ishikari Bay was breathtaking. From both Otaru city and Otaru Bay to Boro Tower, everything could be enjoyed from the private onsen bath in the room. The bathtub was very spacious, comfortably accommodating two adults with plenty of room. The washing area was also very large—comparable to a small public bath. I indulged in the luxury of enjoying an onsen with stunning views and free-flowing hot spring water directly sourced from its origin at any time for 24 hours within my own space. Additionally, there were numerous valuable furnishings (including national treasures) inside the room. Thanks to my IKYU Diamond Member benefits, I could check in at 2 PM and enjoy being one of the first guests to use the public bath. It was also delightful that I had time to explore Boro Tower and other parts of this historic accommodation before other guests arrived. Ginrinsou itself is a nationally registered tangible cultural property that was relocated from Yoichi as a herring mansion; it felt like an art museum with its countless displays of national treasure-level furnishings throughout. For meals, we chose the "Shukutsu Kaiseki" Plan. The kaiseki cuisine made with local seasonal ingredients was delicious. Moreover, their extensive wine list left a great impression—especially their remarkable selection of bottles from emerging wineries in Yoichi, Hokkaido. On checkout day just before leaving, I enjoyed soaking in an open-air bath under clear skies at their public bathhouse while admiring spectacular views over Ishikari Bay. Watching trains run along Ishikari Bay like miniature dioramas while bathing is beyond words to describe fully! Since it was close to closing time for baths that morning—and no other guests were present—I relished precious moments chatting leisurely with my wife (in adjacent women’s baths) while savoring magnificent scenery together. To all staff members led by Okami-san at "Ryotei Onsen Accommodation Ginrinsou," who created such an extraordinary experience during our domestic trip back home—thank you so much! When visiting Otaru again someday soon without question—I will surely return here!

Despite arriving jus...
Despite arriving just before the check-in deadline, we were warmly welcomed without any hesitation. For dinner, we enjoyed a Japanese meal featuring fresh and delicious seafood from Hokkaido—truly impeccable. The local specialty, potatoes, were so good that I even had seconds. Additionally, the building and furnishings were steeped in history and prestige, making for an enjoyable experience. The term "a feast for the eyes" perfectly describes it. Next time, I’d like to visit with more time to spare and try the French cuisine known for its delicious vegetables as my dinner choice. I also look forward to having more delightful conversations with the hostess during my next stay. It was a wonderful trip—thank you!

A cozy and relaxing accommodation
Stayed the night before sightseeing in Otaru. This accommodation is located a bit away from Otaru Station, but it was easily accessible by taxi from the nearest station. In fact, it allowed for a peaceful and relaxing time without the typical crowds of tourist spots. The view from the room was excellent! Relaxed in the onsen in the room and enjoyed kaiseki cuisine featuring northern delicacies. The staff were all very thoughtful and kind, leaving a great impression of this wonderful accommodation. Thank you for an amazing stay!

A wonderful accommodation.
It was my first stay in 12 years. The warm hospitality of the hostess and staff, the scenery, and the cuisine were all wonderful, allowing me to have a truly relaxing time. The view of the sea and trains from the open-air bath is exceptional.

No disappointments guaranteed
It was our first visit. We were a group of four, including my 91-year-old father, my husband, and my sister. Everyone was completely satisfied with everything. The staff's hospitality, the ocean view from the Room, the clean bath, and the excellent cuisine were all impeccable. The meal was very filling, but having an entire Ezo abalone for each person was the ultimate luxury.

Long time no visit!
Since becoming part of the Nitori Group, this was my first visit. The Facility hasn't changed much, but the major change is the display of expensive artworks everywhere. For meals, we had Japanese cuisine on the first day and French on the second day. Both meals were of high quality, and the abalone was particularly delicious. However, the wait time for the French meal was long, and my child couldn't endure it, so we missed out on dessert. A small sauna hut was newly installed in the bath area, but it was somewhat lacking, and there was no cold bath, which was disappointing. In the morning, someone who seemed to be Mr. Nitori (Nitori) greeted us cheerfully. Was it a case of mistaken identity? Haha.

I enjoyed the wonderful building and furnishings.
You can feel history everywhere. The Room is decorated with paintings by Yokoyama Taikan, and the decorations up to the ceiling are beautiful. During the snowy season, the slopes can be dangerous as it is located on a hill. If you follow the shortest route on the car navigation system from Sapporo, you may not be able to climb the steep slope, but if you take a detour, you can reach it from a gentle slope, so if you are not confident in driving on snowy roads, we recommend taking the detour. Once you arrive, you can enjoy a wonderful view. You can also enjoy the view from the small sauna. Thank you very much.

I was healed.
This was my second stay, and everything from the room to the hot springs and customer service was exceptional. The staff worked well together and remembered even the smallest details, which impressed me. I had a wonderful time. Thank you very much.

I shouted "Amazing!" while looking at Otaru and the sea from the room bath.
The room bath with large windows is almost like an open-air bath. I enjoyed a morning bath while letting in the sea breeze from Otaru. The room's refrigerator was well-stocked with bottled water and Otaru beer, so there was no shortage. The Japanese cuisine was delicious with a refined, mild flavor. We even received a special greeting from the proprietress. The historical building is impressive, and the new building's rooms are clean. The location on a hill overlooking the Otaru Port Yacht Harbor is superb. We were given a tour of the building and had our photos taken at the entrance. We also learned about the time when Sota Fujii played a shogi match there. Next time, I plan to try the Western cuisine. All three generations of us were very satisfied. It's about a 40-minute drive from Sapporo. Although Otaru sightseeing was crowded and we couldn't do it in the end, there were no regrets at all.

A traditional inn with a view of Otaru Bay
This is a ryokan I have wanted to stay at for a long time. The building, relocated from the Niboshi Goten, has a solid feel both in its exterior and interior. The corridors are lined with beautiful stained glass, and paintings by artists like Yokoyama Taikan adorn the rooms. Although it was a standard room, it offered a view of Otaru Bay and was spacious enough. Moreover, the open-air bath in the large bath area is three times larger than one would imagine from the indoor bath, and it's truly impressive. I bathed three times and was able to relax alone without overlapping with other guests. What impressed me the most was the food. Each dish was carefully prepared, and by the time I had the sashimi, I already wanted to visit again. While some inns focus on presentation but leave doubts about the taste, every dish at Gin Niboshi-so has a profound flavor. The proprietress handled both the check-in and guided us to our room. The staff who attended to us during dinner and breakfast were also pleasant. Next time, I would like to enjoy the French cuisine.
