Unfortunately, using the detached annex also became a disappointing memory.
I have stayed here several times, and the wonderful meals always stayed with me, so this time I chose the detached annex. However, the Accommodation now seems to cater mainly to international tourists, and I was very disappointed: dinner’s main dish was only a few fried oysters, and breakfast was at a family-restaurant level—simple Japanese food like something I could make myself. Since this had been one of my favorite places to stay, it really brought me down, so I quickly made a Reservation at a restaurant in Hiroshima and headed home after changing my mood.

An Extraordinary Getaway
This was my first stay at Iwaso, and also my first time staying overnight on Miyajima. Every Ryokan has its own character; this one felt refined yet relaxed, and I truly enjoyed the escape from everyday life. The food was excellent, and the Onsen was wonderful.

From the start, the ...
From the start, the staff member in charge seemed unmotivated. When leading us to our Room, they cut in front of other guests who were lined up behind us and showed no manners. I said I would carry my own luggage, but I didn’t realize the ground was sandy and that it was a long walk to the detached Room; in the end I couldn’t roll my suitcase and had to lift it and carry it, which was quite difficult. Another employee who saw this offered, “I’ll carry your luggage,” but the staff member in charge ignored it. When I asked about Facilities on the property, they didn’t know and just said, “It’s written in your Room guide.” Shouldn’t they have said, “Let me check”? The Room was a detached unit surrounded by trees and a waterfall. Being close to nature, some insects are unavoidable—but there were an overwhelming number of winged ants. At first we found a few and assumed they had wandered in by chance, so we removed them. However, more kept appearing from somewhere for hours; between two of us we removed over 50. Winged ants even crawled onto the futon laid out on the tatami mats and onto our pillows. It felt disgusting; even sleeping with an eye mask and a face mask on, we could barely sleep. In the morning there was no sign that anyone had cleaned around the entrance of the detached guest Rooms. Dead insects from the previous day were still there, along with worms covered in large numbers of ants—disgusting. Regarding meals: I informed them in advance about ingredients I cannot eat. They also confirmed this at check-in, and I explained that all listed items were ingredients I dislike. We reconfirmed each item individually as well. Yet at dinner not only were items changed unnecessarily (things I do not dislike), but both meals were changed for both of us. Even though I clearly stated specific ingredients such as salmon and eel as items to avoid, oysters were also replaced with eggplant. When we asked why this happened, we were told something like: “It wasn’t written whether it applied to one person or two people so we changed both,” and “Because many foreign guests don’t like fish—and often mean all fish—we changed oysters too just in case.” But at check-in they confirmed it applied to only one person (me) and reconfirmed which ingredients specifically needed changes—and we are not foreigners anyway. They claimed they changed all fish dishes due to preference issues; however other fish remained unchanged (including watery tuna sashimi that wasn’t good). On top of that, perhaps trying to insist they weren’t at fault, the staff member said: “I don’t know what the kitchen is thinking.” That is not something an employee at the same Ryokan should say. Breakfast was extremely poor: simmered dishes that tasted like they had been cooked only with store-bought white dashi; fried eggs that seemed finished by microwaving them in their container—hard, cold-tasting eggs with no flavor; rice served cold and not tasty. It was so shabby that we didn’t even feel like eating. Of course there are employees who work hard and are pleasant—but for such a long-established Ryokan this is truly disappointing waste of potential. Paying around 140,000 yen felt like buying stress instead. This was my first time staying at a Ryokan where I didn’t want to return to my Room and just wanted to go home as soon as possible. This is only my personal impression, but I never want to go again.

It was hot.
I stayed here for one night on Miyajima because I wanted to climb Mt. Misen. It’s a historic Ryokan with a wonderful atmosphere, and the food was very delicious. I stayed in an annex Room, but it was extremely hot. I think there is room for improvement in the air conditioning. I know it must be difficult to preserve the charm of old traditions, but it was simply too hot.

It was a wonderful Accommodation.
This is a very historic Accommodation on Miyajima. The building is old, but everything was thoroughly cleaned and spotless, which made the stay very pleasant. The fusuma paintings in the Room were beautiful. Deer came to visit the garden. For dinner, we had sukiyaki with Japanese Black Wagyu. The meat was excellent, and there was also a great variety of vegetables—I enjoyed plenty of them. The attendant kindly took care of the hot pot until the end. They also provided Shuttle Service to and from the ferry terminal, and their friendly support was very helpful. Overall, it was a wonderful Accommodation.

If you’re short-staffed, why not install a call button?
The Shuttle Service was excellent. Their flexible support—such as delivering only our luggage to the pier—was truly impressive. Since this isn’t an Onsen area, we didn’t have high expectations, but the water quality was good. However, for a “luxury Accommodation,” it was disappointing that there were no bath towels in the large public bath and we had to bring our own. For dinner, the standard Plan had about the same portion size as a “small but delicious” meal elsewhere, which was perfect for us since we don’t eat much. The flavors felt early-summer and were very tasty. The staff also explained each dish carefully. But breakfast service was quite poor. We wanted to ask whether refills of coffee or rice were available, but no one came over for a long time—or if someone did come by, they left immediately again. We didn’t want to call out loudly (we try to be polite guests), so we gave up on refills. In the end, even the final tea took so long that it felt like a waste of time just waiting, so we left without having it. At other Ryokan, they at least leave a rice pot on the table. If we had stayed in the main building at a more reasonable price, I could have accepted these issues as simple understaffing mistakes. But this time we chose an annex room costing over 100,000 yen for two people simply because we wanted to experience it as part of an ordinary trip—and meals weren’t even served in a private room. If someone splurged on this stay for an anniversary or celebration, I feel it could easily become a very unpleasant memory. Also, I am not Japanese—but I do speak enough Japanese to write this kind of Review without using AI. Still, from start to finish they kept speaking broken English to me; it wasn’t easy for me to say “Japanese is fine.” I wish they had first asked something like “May I explain in Japanese?” Last year at another Onsen destination I stayed at an Accommodation where His Majesty the Emperor had stayed before; although our attendant clearly seemed more fluent in English and Chinese than Japanese based on nationality alone, she consistently served us in Japanese throughout our stay. Her professionalism really stood out—exactly what you’d expect from a long-established Ryokan and its staff. Finally: please consider installing call buttons at tables. We had a relaxing and pleasant stay.
Despite the typhoon, we were barely affected and were able to relax comfortably as a couple. There were many international guests, but it was not particularly noisy, and we could tell that everyone seemed to enjoy the Ryokan experience. The open-air bath with the sound of the mountain stream, the meals that delighted both our eyes and taste buds, and the historic atmosphere throughout the building—above all, the thoughtful care and heartfelt hospitality from everyone at the Accommodation—brought a sense of calm to us as an elderly couple. Itsukushima Shrine is just a few minutes’ walk away, and we also enjoyed the nighttime illumination. The next day, we left our luggage at the Accommodation and headed to the ropeway after about a 10-minute climb up Momijidani Park. There was also Shuttle Service from the ferry terminal, which was truly helpful for travelers carrying heavy suitcases. It was a wonderful trip. Thank you very much.

Relax in Miyajima
This was my second visit to Miyajima. Last time I came on a day trip, so this time I planned an overnight stay on Miyajima. Since I love Onsen, I made a Reservation at Iwaso. It is a historic building, and photos from its use during the summit were displayed. The food was excellent, the staff were wonderful, and it was an unforgettable Accommodation. My wife said she would like to stay again.

This is a wonderful accommodation!
I was truly moved by this wonderful Accommodation after such a long time!! First of all, the building itself is stunning—I was impressed even before stepping inside. The service at the front desk and in the guest room was also courteous and excellent, and the room had everything I needed without excess. The large public bath was just the right size, with perfectly comfortable water temperature, so I could relax and enjoy my stay. And the meals were outstanding—absolutely delicious!! This is a level of thoughtful service that can only come from deep experience. I deeply regret not staying here for two nights! Miyajima is a lovely place, but I want to visit Miyajima again just to stay at this Accommodation. Thank you very much! Please keep up the great work. I would love to visit again.

The Finest Hospitality
First, the atmosphere as you arrive. The sense of history and charm is extraordinary. I feel truly honored to be welcomed to this Accommodation. A serene quiet throughout the Accommodation, with a soothing incense fragrance. The perfect location for enjoying Miyajima. It was an Accommodation I had always wanted to stay at at least once.

The nights on Miyajima were wonderful.
We stayed in a detached Room. It had a wonderful atmosphere, and we were able to relax while enjoying the view outside. It felt truly luxurious. The highlight was dinner. It was the best we’ve ever had—beautifully presented, and every dish was impressively delicious. The bath was also very clean and elegantly designed. Despite the number of Rooms, it felt spacious and comfortable to use. They also provided reliable Shuttle Service back to the port on our departure day, which we really appreciated. Miyajima’s nighttime illumination was stunning. Thank you very much.

Priceless nature with views over Momijidani Valley!
This was my second visit to Miyajima, and I was truly moved to discover such a serene world just a short distance away from the bustle around Itsukushima Shrine. From the Room, the bath, and the restaurant, we could all look out over Momijidani Valley—it felt as if my heart was being cleansed. Dinner was at a table, so I requested counter seating for breakfast; it offered an even better view of Momijidani Valley, and it was absolutely the right choice. The Facility is somewhat old and there are areas that could benefit from renovation, but it’s an Accommodation I would definitely like to stay at again if I visit Miyajima.

First Stay in Miyajima
I was very satisfied with the location, staff service, and room. It was my first time staying in Miyajima, and since it was the off-season, I was able to relax and enjoy my stay. I would love to visit again during the autumn foliage season.

It was excellent!
The accommodation was excellent, not only because of the wonderful building but also due to the exceptional service from the staff. The bath was great, and I found it hard to leave as I wanted to stay in it amidst the crisp morning air. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, and I finished everything. While the portions might be smaller compared to other ryokans, being able to enjoy snacks along the promenade made it satisfying. I would love to visit again during the autumn foliage season!

Friendly Accommodation
Upon boarding the ferry, I called the accommodation, and they kindly came to pick me up. After a short drive through mountain roads, I arrived at Iwaso—a charming accommodation that felt nostalgic despite it being my first visit. The property was much larger than I had imagined and seemed to be one of the most historically significant buildings among accommodations in Miyajima. The highlight was undoubtedly the dinner; I was amazed by the creative and exquisite delicacies. Never did I expect to encounter such high-level cuisine amidst the forest near Momijidani Park. I had heard beforehand that this place served a working dinner for world leaders during the G7 summit, and indeed, it lived up to its reputation—it was truly exceptional. This experience alone makes me want to return someday just for this meal. The staff were kind, the onsen was relaxing, and overall it was an extraordinary accommodation where one could unwind without any stress. Thank you!

An elegant and serene traditional accommodation
A very clean and elegant traditional accommodation with a calm atmosphere. The location near Itsukushima Shrine is excellent. The shuttle service and the reception staff were polite and provided exceptional service. The onsen was incredibly warming, making it comfortable even during the nighttime light-up or early morning visits to Itsukushima Shrine without feeling cold at all. The meals were visually stunning and absolutely delicious. However, the service from the room attendants and dining staff was disappointing. Despite being young, they seemed unfamiliar with terms like "hanten" (traditional jacket) or struggled to read "tabi" (traditional socks), which I had to clarify for them. Breakfast felt rushed, as if assuming Japanese guests would understand everything just by reading the menu. A bit more explanation would have been appreciated in many instances. While I understand there are challenges like labor shortages in the tourism industry, considering this accommodation hosted a G7 lunch meeting, expectations naturally rise. During my stay, most guests seemed to be international visitors; however, I couldn't help but wish for slightly more consideration towards Japanese guests as well. That said, everything apart from some aspects of customer service was truly outstanding. I would love to visit again someday. Thank you for your hospitality!

Located near Momijid...
Located near Momijidani, the lush green scenery offers a relaxing experience. While there are many international guests, they left a good impression with their manners. The meals, a creative fusion of Japanese and Western cuisine, were all exceptionally delicious. The staff were kind and welcoming, even for solo travelers—thank you for the warm hospitality. A Perfect Example of Retro-Modern Accommodation
A Ryokan blending the tradition and prestige since the Ansei era with modern updates, offering a comfortable and effortless stay. While maintaining its historical charm, the rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art washlets and automatic faucets. The traces of once-used central air conditioning remain, but Daikin air conditioners now ensure perfect climate control. The service, including meals, is impeccable—an exemplary model of what a Ryokan should be. At night, enjoy the illuminated Itsukushima Shrine; in the early morning, take pleasure in mountain walks. It’s a place that makes you want to visit again in another season.

Early Summer in Miyajima
The Room was thoroughly cleaned, and while it felt a bit old, it was refreshing and comfortable. The fresh green maple leaves seen from the window were beautiful, and the sound of the clear stream was soothing. The meals were modest without being extravagant, making them gentle on the stomach.

Excellent Accommodation
I rarely write reviews, but this place was truly exceptional. Five stars are not enough. Despite the building being very old, it has been beautifully renovated with a perfect balance, making it comfortable, clean, and lacking nothing anywhere you look. The deliciousness of the meals was even moving. Among all the ryokans I have visited so far, this is the best. If it were closer to me, I would definitely make it my regular accommodation. When I visit Miyajima again, I will absolutely stay here.

The greater the expectations, the greater the disappointment.
92,000 yen for two people. That's quite an expectation. The room we were shown to was in the new building. Well, that was understood, but the room was small. It felt cramped. The doorknob was round and positioned high, reminiscent of structures from over a decade ago. In the morning, when I passed by a young boy, possibly a part-time worker cleaning the room, in the hallway, he didn't greet me, so I greeted him with "Good morning!" Is this happening again at this long-established Ryokan!? Due to a shortage of staff, there was a Southeast Asian woman serving. I was worried if we could communicate properly. If it's a first-class establishment, I would like them to have proper Japanese staff. However, the taste and appearance of the food were very good. It might have been better if it was a detached room, but this long-established Ryokan is disappointing. It's a typical case of resting on its laurels. The price is far below expectations. Kinsuikan or Arimoto seem to be better options.
