    Moved and grateful!!

Thank you for taking care of us during our one-night stay. “A Hotel Like an Art Museum” It truly was exactly as described. We could feel the attention to detail in everything. Our Room was the suite “Kansui.” We were told it was renovated in 2023, and the moment we opened the door, we were amazed. The refined, beautiful space was perfectly designed, and the natural scenery seen through the window felt like a painting in an art museum. The view of nature from the bathroom as well made it unquestionably an outstanding Room. The restaurant “Trezonia” was also excellent. There were many dishes in the course, and we enjoyed every one of them. This is without a doubt a wonderful Hotel that makes you want to come back. The staff who assisted us were kind and very helpful. Thank you very much. We look forward to staying again next time. Thank you for such a moving experience.

A Highly Satisfying Stay for Solo Travelers

This was my first solo trip to Toyama, and I chose to stay here. To sum it up: absolutely the right choice, and I was completely satisfied with my stay. Although it’s a small Hotel, the service struck a perfect balance—attentive yet not intrusive—and the entire property felt like an art museum, making every walk through the building genuinely exciting. Even during the Obon holiday period, the large public bath was never crowded, and I was able to use it—along with the sauna area (spa)—almost as if it were private, which was wonderful. Dinner is a course meal that takes about two hours, but everything about it—the taste, portion size, and presentation—was outstanding. Breakfast is Japanese-style, and the freshly cooked rice was unbelievably delicious! I wondered if I could eat that much in the morning, but I finished everything on both days of my two-night stay. Both my Room and all common areas were extremely clean. With such a spacious property you might expect to notice dust or spots that need attention here and there, but everything is carefully cleaned and well maintained. There’s also a waterside area that guests don’t enter—perhaps part of the art—and I was truly impressed to see it being cleaned with a net in the morning. The shop inside is unlike what you find at many Hotels; it also sells carefully curated art pieces. When a small child came in holding a toy stick (there are many glass artworks on display), I felt a bit nervous—but at the same time, I sensed kindness in how things are intentionally displayed so anyone can view them up close. There doesn’t seem to be anything like convenience stores within walking distance around this Hotel. Also, since Toyama Station is quite far away, rather than for sightseeing this place feels ideal for someone like me who wants a quiet retreat-style stay at this Hotel. There’s still more I can’t fully put into words here, but I would love to stay again! Thank you very much for taking such great care of me.

One of the very best accommodations available

I’ve stayed at many Accommodations, and this is easily among the very best. It’s not inexpensive, but considering the dining, service, and Facilities, it felt like outstanding value—worth far more than the price. The moment you step inside, you’re captivated by a breathtaking view of the Jintsu River framed by stately yet modern architecture. The art-filled spaces also have a playful sense of humor that made us smile. We stayed in the Modern Moon room, which had beautifully curated interiors. We spent an elegant time enjoying the fragrant hinoki cypress bath overlooking the Jintsu River and relaxing on the terrace. The bedding was exceptional for a great night’s sleep, and in addition to two well-appointed large public baths, we loved that there was a private family bath available at a surprisingly reasonable rate. Dinner was French cuisine featuring abundant Toyama ingredients, with flawless presentation and service. I was amazed by the skillful cooking that elevated even more distinctive ingredients into something refined. The generous full-course meal paired perfectly with their outstanding Toyama house wines (red and white). The next morning’s Japanese breakfast was just as impressive—deeply flavorful and wonderfully soothing after the previous night’s course. Relaxing at the Accommodation is wonderful on its own, but there are also plenty of activities—an art tour, children’s events, strolls through the garden and along the Jintsu River—so one night is nowhere near enough. Being able to use Tesla charging Facilities also helped us travel without worry. The hospitality from all staff members was exceptional. We were so moved that we immediately made another Reservation for six months later. We truly can’t wait to return.

Experience an extraordinary stay surrounded by art!

From arrival to departure, we had a wonderful time surrounded by art and nature. I stayed with a family member who needs a low-sodium diet, and although it must have been extra work, thank you very much for accommodating this request. The Facility and the art were so wonderful that we said we should have booked a Multiple Night Stay. We were truly amazed to see so many works by well-known artists, including paintings by Yayoi Kusama. There were museum-quality pieces casually displayed throughout the property—so impressive that we would have gladly paid an admission fee. We hope to visit again in the near future.

    Wonderful Hotel

The Hotel I had always wanted to visit. With attentive staff, a wonderful lounge atmosphere, and delicious food, it was a lovely Hotel that met my expectations. This time I stayed for one night, but next time I’d like to take it a bit more slowly. The only disappointment was that my preferred doneness for the main meat dish didn’t seem to be communicated. I also left something behind—thank you for sending it to me with careful packaging.

Reliable, professional service you can trust

They responded without hesitation to our various requests, which allowed us to stay with peace of mind. We are truly impressed by the professionalism of all the staff. As guests as well, we felt encouraged to enjoy the thoughtfully prepared environment while being mindful not to make unreasonable requests.

    Nestled in the lush ...

Nestled in the lush nature of the Jintsu Gorge, the location is exceptional and helps you forget the bustle of everyday life from the moment you arrive. Stepping inside, I was impressed by how thoughtfully curated art and furnishings are placed throughout—this is not just an Accommodation, but a beautifully completed space in its own right. The art tour I joined after check-in was especially fascinating. Learning the stories and intentions behind each piece and setting allowed me to feel this Hotel’s unique aesthetic and worldview more deeply. The stay itself became an experience of culture and art, which left a lasting impression. The guest room exceeded my expectations as well. The interior design and amenities were arranged with great attention to detail, creating a refined and calming atmosphere. The bed was extremely comfortable—I slept soundly until morning, which is rare when traveling. Dinner—the French cuisine—was outstanding. Each dish skillfully incorporated local Toyama ingredients and was beautiful not only in taste but also in aroma and presentation. The wine pairings were excellent too, making it a truly memorable evening. In addition to the Onsen, there were plenty of wellness Facility options such as a jet bath and hot stone spa, allowing me to relax deeply both physically and mentally throughout my stay. It was so comfortable that I wished I had more time, which really highlighted the overall quality of the entire Facility. The staff’s service was natural yet polished, with warm hospitality that never felt excessive—making my stay consistently comfortable and reassuring. It was an exceptionally satisfying stay where I could enjoy everything: Accommodation, dining, Onsen, art, and even the space itself. If I have another chance to visit Toyama, I would love to return. Thank you for such a wonderful time that will stay with me for years to come.

We had a very relaxing stay.

I was pleasantly surprised to find such a wonderful Hotel about 40 minutes from Toyama Station by local bus. (It was also very helpful that, with a Reservation, they could drive me back to Toyama Station.) The days are limited, but joining the in-house tour led by the curator—who explained the building and the art—was another highlight. I also really enjoyed Toyama’s local cuisine. Next time, I’d like to try a different type of Room.

Everything was perfect except for the spa.

After an intense work trip in Toyama, I stayed here to heal both body and mind. I was truly impressed by the kindness of the Hotel staff, the thoughtful dinner and breakfast, the in-room jacuzzi and sauna, and the full moon viewed from the rooftop. Thank you again for everything. Because relaxation was my goal, I also made a Reservation in advance for the Spring Day Spa and was looking forward to it. However, I was surprised by the therapist’s behavior during the treatment. I believe they are aware of what happened, so I will not go into details, but please note that a lack of professionalism can damage the reputation of an otherwise wonderful Hotel. I hesitated about posting this Review, but with your future in mind, I decided to share it.

Not a Hotel like a museum—stay in a museum instead?

It’s famous in Toyama, so I decided to stay there. I joined both the art tour and the record-listening session. The staff were good. The Room seemed to have had the bathroom area renovated, and the raised floor was unpopular with my family. I realized I need to confirm barrier-free access next time. The loungewear was nice. There is a main building and an annex connected together, but it’s not as huge as the Hyatt in Niseko, so it wasn’t inconvenient. There are various interiors, which makes it enjoyable. There were many young couples and few older guests. There is no pool, and the bath is ordinary. It was an Accommodation purely for enjoying interior design, architecture, and art. In the end it’s a matter of personal taste—if it doesn’t suit you, it won’t be very appealing. Since I don’t like Mr. Naito’s designs, I wasn’t impressed at all. It felt luxurious but like a world of the owner’s tastes—self-satisfaction more than hospitality. The food was similar: rather than truly creative cuisine, French and Japanese dishes alternated, and the Japanese dishes didn’t suit my palate. Breakfast was mostly protein with no vegetables or fruit! It made me wonder if they’ve studied nutrition at all—do they think “local production for local consumption” makes anything acceptable? Rather than welcoming guests, I strongly felt they were saying “please enjoy our world,” with heavy self-promotion. My impression was that it was like showcasing a wealthy owner’s treasures while cutting costs on operations as an Accommodation. In a way, it was interesting.

This was my first trip to Toyama, and my original plan was to visit museums around Toyama Station—but by the end of the trip, all I can think about is my time at River Retreat Garaku. The breathtaking scenery and the beautiful greens—different shades from the trees and the Jinzu River—were so captivating I felt drawn in. I was so immersed that I truly lost track of time. The Room and the large public bath were spotless and comfortable throughout. Breakfast was wonderful—the rice was genuinely delicious. All of the staff were very kind, and even though it was just one night, I left feeling completely fulfilled. Thank you very much for your hospitality!

    It was a wonderful Hotel.

I had a very satisfying stay thanks to the well-designed atmosphere and cleanliness throughout the property, the delicious meals, and the cheerful staff. I deliberately gave a rating of 4 because there were two disappointing points. At breakfast, after being told, “Please feel free to have another serving of rice,” more than 20 minutes passed without anyone coming by or checking on us. The ceramic rice pot was not within reach, and all we could hear from the kitchen were loud noises and staff chatting. When I saw service being provided to guests who had been seated after me, I realized no one was paying attention here, so I got up and served myself. If the rice pot and tea kettle had been placed within reach from the start and we had been told, “Please help yourself at your own pace,” I think my satisfaction would have been much higher. As for the Room bedding, it was the same brand as what I use at home, which initially reassured me. However, about 30 minutes after going to bed, my yukata became damp with moisture; even after changing clothes it became damp again—over and over. I don’t normally sweat in my sleep at home and this was my first time experiencing anything like it, so I can only assume the bedding itself was damp. Somehow I managed to get some sleep toward dawn. I wanted to rest under a fluffy futon that felt crisp and dry.

    Thank you very much.

I finally got to stay at Gagaku Club, which I’d been wanting to visit for a long time!! It became a wonderful memory. I accidentally left something behind, but you sent it along with another shipment before I even realized it was missing. Thank you very much. The 25th anniversary sake we had at the restaurant was absolutely delicious. We would love to visit again.

    A Long-Awaited Return Visit

This was my second visit in nearly 20 years. While the main building inevitably shows its age, the wonderful meals made for a truly relaxing stay. I was disappointed that most of the services that used to be offered are no longer available. I felt that at least beer could be included as a complimentary drink. The French dinner was excellent, and I was very satisfied with breakfast as well. I would like to visit again in a different season.

I’m concerned about the quality of customer service.

This was my second stay. I came looking forward to viewing the paintings and sculptures throughout the Hotel and its garden. Once again, I was impressed by the museum-quality collection. I have two complaints. First, I can no longer keep up with some of the menu choices and concepts. I didn’t particularly enjoy bear meat. I also didn’t like the dessert presentation where raspberry sauce is dripped onto paper cutouts to create patterns for an Instagram-worthy look. Second, as on my previous visit, I often encountered staff who seemed inexperienced. At final checkout, it became clear that what we ordered did not match the items on the bill.

A stay that feels like time spent in an art museum

It honestly exceeded my expectations. This is a wonderful Accommodation well worth traveling a long distance to stay at. I’ve stayed at other art Hotels before, but it’s rare to find one where families with children can stay without having the Room options restricted, so this was truly valuable. I was deeply moved by the outstanding art collection. The staff were also excellent, and we were able to spend a very comfortable time. The meals were delicious, and it felt like no corners were cut even in the high quality of the children’s meals. We also happened to visit during peak cherry blossom season, and the breathtaking blossoms made the trip even better. Thank you very much.

I was able to relax and rest well.

This was my first time requesting a treatment as well. I arrived later than planned and was worried they might not have enough time, but the session was handled properly. I plan to make a Reservation again next time, and I think I’ll be able to manage my schedule more smoothly. Dinner might feel slightly small for some men, but I was satisfied with both the quality and quantity. The dessert—especially the financier—was delicious.

    Dream Accommodation

I had admired this Accommodation for over 10 years after first seeing it in a magazine, and I finally got to stay here. I was a little nervous about traveling solo, but a Review on IKYU saying “I was able to stay comfortably even on my own” gave me the confidence to make a Reservation. From the welcome beer cocktail and sweets created in collaboration with Noritaka Tatehana, the hospitality was even more wonderful than I had imagined. It’s an Accommodation where one can truly forget everyday life, with one delightful experience after another. I highly recommend experiencing everything—the aroma massage, dinner, and breakfast! The Jinzu River viewed from my Room window and the Tateyama mountain range seen from the Shuttle Service bus were both unforgettable sights. Thank you for a wonderful holiday.

    In the Thawing Season

Last autumn, I put on winter tires, and with the forecast calling for unusually mild weather for February, I suddenly decided to visit River Retreat Garaku and made a Reservation. As it was a three-day weekend, River Retreat Garaku had many guests. What’s wonderful about this place is that even when fully booked, the service never feels uneven. I don’t think that’s something anyone can do as a matter of course. Thanks to that, we were able to spend our time very comfortably. Dinner was delightful from the appetizers onward, and I couldn’t wait for each next dish. The wine was excellent, and the local Toyama sake was also delicious. At breakfast, thank you for the generous servings of freshly cooked, glossy rice. There were so many side dishes laid out that they made the rice taste even better. I’ll find time to come again—and if a Room happens to be available, I’ll make a Reservation right away. Thank you very much.

We had an exquisite and luxurious time of pure happiness.

I booked a one-person trip as a reward for myself after finishing child-rearing, choosing from my favorite hotels in Toyama. Even before my stay, the thoughtful arrangements for access made me feel welcomed. Upon arriving at the station, I was greeted by a special car that marked the beginning of an extraordinary experience. The day of my stay had weather transitioning from snow to rain and then cloudy skies. However, as soon as I arrived at the hotel lobby, I was greeted by an incredible view of snowy mountains partially covered in mist with occasional sunlight breaking through—a scene even more breathtaking than what was shown on their website. The beer cocktail and sweets offered as a welcome drink were delightful and heightened my anticipation for the meals ahead. The interior leading to the lobby and room featured stunning art pieces everywhere, making every corner worth exploring. The room I was guided to felt incredibly spacious for one person, with beautiful interiors, large windows offering views of Jinzu River, a wide and clean bathroom overlooking Jinzu River with fragrant amenities that provided ultimate relaxation both physically and mentally. During my stay, I joined an art tour within the accommodation, read books on comfortable sofas, gazed at outdoor scenery in peace—all allowing me to forget about busy daily life completely. For baths: I enjoyed the spa at night; used the public bath before breakfast; then relaxed in-room bath post-breakfast—all thoroughly satisfying experiences! The Onsen water left me warm inside out while its fragrant amenities made skin smooth and hydrated—truly wonderful. As for dining: though initially concerned about feeling lonely during a solo French course meal—it turned out perfect without dress codes! Being able to dine comfortably in loungewear or yukata after relaxing Onsen time suited me perfectly without any hesitation. Each dish exceeded expectations—featuring flavors highlighting Toyama's local ingredients like vegetables from their garden; local eggs; crab & white shrimp; pasture-raised beef—all impeccably balanced dishes bringing joy bite after bite! Pairing wines elevated everything further while breakfast too tasted exceptional! At nightfall—I witnessed not only round beautiful moonlight but also shooting stars from balcony views adding magic moments unforgettable! On departure day under clear skies—the return ride towards Toyama Station took scenic routes showcasing majestic snowy Tateyama peaks leaving lasting impressions reflecting heartfelt hospitality till farewell moment itself! Only regret remains missing fireplace ambiance this visit—but surely planning revisit soon again!! Thank you so much!!

This was my third stay, and about five years have passed since my last visit. As before, I was very satisfied with the bath and meals. However, while tea and snacks were provided in the lobby, there were no snacks in the Room (I recall there used to be pudding or something similar), which felt a bit lonely. The water and juice in the refrigerator were free of charge, but alcohol was charged. It would have been nice if at least small bottles of beer were complimentary. Since the lobby is lovely, I thought it would be great if there were more complimentary offerings in the morning (as breakfast lacked fruits or desserts). The meals used local ingredients and were satisfying in both appearance and taste.

A wonderful accommodation except for the variety of baths.

Stayed with my son during our trip to Toyama. This accommodation was recommended by mentalist DaiGo, and while the price was a bit high, it lived up to expectations. The room was upgraded to a higher grade, offering spacious and comfortable accommodations. Meals included French cuisine for dinner and Japanese cuisine for breakfast; both were meticulously prepared, delicious, and served in appropriate portions. The bath featured an Onsen with an outdoor bath available; however, the variety was limited compared to other aspects of the stay. The staff provided excellent hospitality with just the right balance of attentiveness without being intrusive. If given the chance, I would love to visit again as a family of four next time!

    Stayed for one night...

Stayed for one night in October. Slightly early for the autumn foliage season. A truly remarkable hotel, just as the reviews suggest. While there are many luxurious accommodations, it’s rare to find a place so comfortable and thoughtfully designed, offering an experience akin to staying in your favorite art museum. Dinner was French cuisine, and breakfast was a traditional Japanese meal—both visually delightful and exceptionally delicious. Each room has unique decor, making you want to return and try another room next time. The only disappointment was that the wonderfully original aroma blend used at the entrance was not available for purchase. The moment you step into the hotel, you’ll notice it—it’s something many guests would likely want to take home!

    This was my second s...

This was my second stay. Room: I stayed in the Modern Suite. It was very spacious, but I felt it would be even better if the bathroom were a bit larger. I enjoyed relaxing in the room. Facility: The room was fine, but the hallway and elevator felt quite humid. Dining: Each dish was incredibly delicious. We tried to limit portions by ordering one à la carte dish for our child and sharing from adult portions, but it still ended up being too much for us. The dessert portion, in particular, was quite substantial. At the time of reservation and check-in, we mentioned that we wanted to share from adult courses for our child. We hoped to give one dessert plate to our child; however, they couldn’t eat it due to an ingredient they disliked. When asked about disliked ingredients before starting the course meal, we noticed that there were ingredients in the dessert that our child didn’t like and requested a change. However, we were informed that there would be a separate dessert for children instead of altering this one. In the end, an additional dessert was provided for our child while adults had their desserts despite already being full. The restaurant's response wasn’t wrong at all; we understand this situation arose due to our preferences alone. Still, knowing how much food might go uneaten made us wish portion sizes could have been adjusted so as not to waste such delicious meals unnecessarily—everything truly tasted amazing! Despite writing at length here about minor concerns regarding dining logistics or preferences during mealtime arrangements overall—it remains clear what makes this hotel special! We look forward eagerly toward returning again soon!

    Satisfaction

I finally had the chance to visit, and it was truly worth the wait. The scenery was stunning, and artworks by renowned artists were beautifully displayed throughout the property, creating an exceptional atmosphere. The suite room exceeded expectations and provided great satisfaction. Meals were creatively prepared using plenty of local ingredients, offering both visual appeal and delicious flavors. Breakfast was equally outstanding. The hospitality was remarkable and deserves special mention.
