    Second stay

I enjoyed my stay last year, so I chose this place again this year. The location is great and very convenient. The meals were delicious, and the Room was comfortable. We rented a car, and they wiped the car windows for us, which was a big help. I was also impressed by the staff’s well-coordinated teamwork when laying out the futons. I’d love to come back again next year.

Exceptional dining, Rooms, and Onsen—perfect in every way

I stayed in a private Room with an open-air bath on the 7th floor. The Room was impeccably cleaned, and everything—from the air conditioning to overall comfort—was flawless. The in-room open-air bath, available 24 hours a day, was at the perfect temperature, and I could soak at my leisure to complete satisfaction. Above all, the dinner and breakfast were truly lavish! The taste was perfect, and each dish was thoughtfully crafted and a delight to look at as well. It’s also conveniently located near the shopping arcade, Dogo Onsen Honkan, and the tram station, making it very easy for sightseeing around Matsuyama City. This is an Accommodation I would definitely like to stay at again.

    It was a perfect stay.

Despite welcoming many international guests, this Accommodation preserves the spirit of Japan. The Room was spacious, and the open-air bath was wonderful. The location is also great and convenient. I would like to stay here again.

    Excellent service

As expected from such a high-end Accommodation, the meals were delicious and the service was attentive throughout. We arrived late, and our departure time changed several times, but their response can only be described as “excellent.” The only thing that stood out was the lack of a coin laundry. If there had been one, it would have made things even easier. That said, everything else was perfect. It’s one of the Accommodations I’d like to visit again.

We would love to visit again.

I visited again for the first time in six years (both last time and this time were almost the same dates, just one day apart). I made a Reservation with a similar grade to last time, but the price had inevitably gone up (which can’t be helped). The meal course also felt slightly downgraded compared to last time—especially the final sea bream rice (I later noticed there was also a Plan with the same content as before)—but both the quality and quantity were excellent. They preserve traditional good elements while incorporating new ideas, and even the tableware is thoughtfully chosen. I could really feel their attention to detail that keeps things engaging not only in taste but also in presentation (I’ve stayed at many Accommodations, and this is my favorite in this price range). The service staff seemed relatively young (as I recall feeling similarly last time), but they are well trained, very attentive without being overbearing, and I was able to relax throughout the night. Since six years had passed since my previous stay, I expected the Room might show some wear, but it was well maintained and seemed just as clean as before. I would definitely like to visit again. Thank you very much.

    The staff were very kind.

This is a truly beautiful Ryokan, with Mr. Kurokawa’s design evident in every detail. As he is from my mother’s generation, she was absolutely delighted. We were also able to see the tea room, which was very moving. All of the staff were exceptionally kind, which left a strong impression on us. We would love to stay again.

    The bedding is terrible.

The duvet cover on the bed wasn’t secured and was simply draped over a thin comforter, so it came loose easily, which was very unpleasant.

    The sauna was disappointing.

I came back for the first time in about 15 years. This was my second stay. I stayed with my child. I chose to stay because there is a sauna. The Facility feels a bit old. The service was excellent. Each dish was carefully prepared, and the chef’s hospitality really came through—it was truly delicious. I think it’s wonderful. However, the sauna was disappointing. The cold bath wasn’t very cold. Also, there was no space for outdoor cooling down, so I couldn’t fully relax afterward. And since I have a lumbar herniated disc, the thin futon was tough for me. I would have liked an extra mattress/futon layer to be added underneath.

    Meals

The food in the bowl is wonderfully delicious, but I think a larger bowl would make the flavor and presentation stand out even more! There were a few areas that felt like missed opportunities, which was disappointing. No plans to return for now.

I stayed on a Plan with breakfast included. Since I was traveling alone, they prepared a single table for me, so I could enjoy breakfast at a relaxed pace. However, the staff member who served the meal was not Japanese. Communication was possible, but some subtle nuances did not come across, which was disappointing. I understand staffing shortages are challenging, but it still left me feeling a bit let down. The Onsen had both an indoor bath and an open-air bath, and it was clean and very nice.

There was a dead insect in the Room.

The staff were very kind upon arrival, and I was glad we chose this Ryokan. They offer a wide range of services, such as lending towels for visiting the public baths and providing welcome drinks—very attentive overall. Our Room also had a massage chair, which helped soothe our tired bodies. However, the bath in the Room was so small that I didn’t feel like using it. We went to the public baths right away and returned satisfied to find that the futons had been laid out, but there was a dead insect about 1.5 cm long near the foot of the bedding, which was very disappointing. It was obvious at a glance—why was it left there? The futon also seemed damp, which was unfortunate. The meals were beautifully presented on elegant dishes, and both the appearance and seasoning were excellent. The portions, timing, and attentiveness were all perfect. When we left, they kindly wiped our car windows clean, which made me happy. That said, I’m not sure if I would choose to stay again next time.

    A Thoughtfully Attentive Accommodation

We stayed here with our family as a slightly belated Father’s Day gift for my 92-year-old father. We were welcomed with great care, and it helped ease the fatigue of our trip. Everyone was impressed by how delicious the meals were, featuring plenty of local ingredients. Above all, the warm attentiveness of the staff was wonderful, and my father was very satisfied. If I had to mention one thing, I would rate it 4 due to the age of the Facility. We were also deeply touched to receive photos and a towel handkerchief as gifts. Thank you very much.

Despite the high price, the meals were nicely presented but lacked substance. The bath facilities were old and I couldn’t honestly say they were clean. There were many guests from Taiwan and Korea, so it felt like the pricing was aimed entirely at inbound tourists.

    Thoughtful Accommodation

Although it is a large Accommodation, it felt very welcoming, with staff whose attentiveness reached every detail. What impressed me most was the service at the dining venue. Two of the four of us have multiple food allergies, so I imagine it was challenging for the kitchen, but they thoughtfully adapted each dish using seasonal ingredients as alternatives, and we were able to enjoy every course. When serving, they carefully explained each substitute ingredient one by one, which made us feel safe and comfortable. Another pleasant surprise was that the staff member who assisted us in the evening greeted us by name at breakfast: “Good morning, Mr./Ms. ___.” One more thoughtful touch: they even wiped our car’s dirty windshield for us. For dinner, two of us chose the Tai Gozen set and two chose the Iyo Beef Gozen set; both were so delicious it was hard to compare them. Everything was excellent—especially the sea bream sashimi and sea bream rice, as well as the Iyo beef shabu-shabu and aged Iyo beef filet grilled on a mesh rack. Being able to dine in a private room was also relaxing. It is an unforgettable Accommodation where we would love to stay again when visiting Dogo Onsen.

An Accommodation I’d Love to Stay at Again

It was my first trip to Dogo Onsen, and the location was very convenient. The service, the Onsen, and the cleanliness of the building were all excellent, so it became an Accommodation I would like to stay at again.

    It was a wonderful stay.

It was the final night of our Shikoku round-trip driving journey, and we are truly glad we stayed here. We were able to relax in the open-air bath, and enjoyed a wonderfully delicious seasonal meal—carefully prepared dish by dish and not overly large—in our Room. We also had the chance to attend the evening tea gathering, where we spent a fun and precious time with the teacher. Starting with the staff member in charge of our Room, everyone was considerate and provided attentive service until the very end. On our way home, my husband and I found ourselves saying that we’d love to come back—even if only to Dogo Onsen in Shikoku, or even just to this Accommodation alone. (After driving through the mountains and getting caught in the rain, our car’s windshield was sparkling clean… thank you very much.)

An Accommodation You’ll Want to Return To

I never expected to fall in love with Dogo, but it’s a compact Onsen town with plenty of shops—and because Dogo-kan is there, I wanted to come back and did. This time I chose a Room with an open-air bath, and the bath was so spacious it felt almost too big for two people—absolutely amazing. I want to save up and do a Multiple Night Stay, but it’s disappointing that Rooms with an open-air bath are only offered as plans including breakfast and dinner. Nearby luxury Ryokan offer No Meals Included plans as well… The meals at Dogo-kan are certainly delicious, but honestly, Ryokan food can start to feel repetitive after two days, and I think some guests would prefer to eat out on the second night. If it were Japanese cuisine on the first night and a Western-style course on the second, for example, it wouldn’t get boring. It’s an Accommodation that makes you want to go back again as soon as you get home.

The customer service attitude is excellent.

I was very satisfied. The staff’s smiles and hospitality were wonderful. The food was also very creative—cute touches like a sea bream made from carrots. If I had to mention one thing, I wish there had been a choice of pillows.

    I stayed for two nig...

I stayed for two nights in a Room with an open-air bath. As I’ve been staying at newer Accommodations lately, I initially noticed the age of the place as soon as I entered, and the older amenities and slight dustiness concerned me. However, as time passed, it somehow became comfortable (maybe I just got used to it). The Room’s open-air bath was spacious and very relaxing. I was told the water is replaced each time, which gave me peace of mind and a sense of cleanliness. Above all, the meals were outstanding. Over the two days, I never got tired of them and was truly impressed by the many thoughtfully prepared dishes that made great use of local ingredients. The woman who served our meals also struck just the right balance in timing and attentiveness, which felt very comfortable. One small disappointment was the indoor bath Facility (washing area). Because it is old, there were signs of mold and grime on areas like the door and floor, which made me feel it was a shame given how wonderful the open-air bath is. As someone who likes things very clean, I even had an urge to start cleaning myself. Overall, all of the staff were very kind, and I had a pleasant stay.

    Your First Dogo Onsen Experience

We were completely satisfied with all the hospitality from the moment we arrived at the Accommodation. All of the meals were delicious, and we finished everything. The Onsen was set to a comfortable 39°C and 42°C, and there was also a sauna, so we were able to relax at ease. This is an Accommodation we would like to stay at again when we visit Dogo. Thank you very much.

I’m not sure this is the type of Hotel that IKYU would recommend.

I chose this Accommodation in Dogo Onsen because it offered an open-air bath, but it wasn’t a free-flowing hot spring source to begin with, and it didn’t meet my expectations. The building itself is impressive, designed by a well-known architect, but the interior felt cheap—like a tacky Japanese-style lobby—and the Room types also felt dated, which did nothing to lift my mood. Above all, the meals felt like they were at the level of group-tour catering in a large banquet hall. Perhaps this is what you get these days in the 20,000-yen-per-person range, but even at that price there should be Accommodations with better taste, even if not luxurious. I always make Reservations through IKYU and trust it, so choosing this based on IKYU’s recommendation left me both surprised and disappointed.

A great Onsen Hotel in Japan is right here.

My wife and I visited Ehime for the first time, and after work we took an evening flight and checked in at 8:00 PM. The spacious lobby with a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere, the well-stocked shop, the large public bath, and a comfortable Room made us feel at ease. Towels were provided in the public bath, and the Uchiko ham at breakfast was delicious. Thanks to staying in Dogo, we enjoyed chatting with locals at a nearby izakaya, and the next morning we were able to visit Tsubaki-yu—very satisfying overall.

Relax in your in-room open-air bath, but plan your travel wisely.

The in-room open-air bath was wonderful, and best of all, I could enjoy the Onsen at my own pace whenever I liked. One note for future guests: it seems taxis are not always waiting at the Hotel. This time, arranging one took longer than expected, and getting to the airport felt a bit rushed. I would feel even more reassured if coordination at the front desk were a little smoother. I think this Accommodation is highly recommended for anyone who wants to relax and enjoy the Onsen.

    I visited Dogo Onsen...

I visited Dogo Onsen for the first time to unwind from everyday fatigue. The moment I stepped into the Accommodation, I was enveloped in an incense-like fragrance (when I asked, the staff kindly told me it was the scent of lilies), and my friend and I were so delighted we could hardly contain ourselves. For three days, I was truly grateful for the warm, heartfelt hospitality shown by every member of staff. The shop, which had almost all of Dogo Onsen’s souvenirs in one place, was also very impressive—I really enjoyed browsing and shopping there. I would love to visit again. Thank you very much for everything. It was a wonderful and thoroughly satisfying trip to Dogo Onsen.

It turned out to be a wonderful anniversary.

This was our first visit to Dogo Onsen. We considered the top-floor guest Room, but since the indoor bath there is not Onsen, we chose a Room one floor below with a private open-air bath. There are nine Rooms with private open-air baths (including two special suites), and we were shown to “Mikan no Yu.” The anteroom had a sunken kotatsu (it seems some Rooms have one and some do not). The in-Room kaiseki dinner offered small portions of many delicious dishes; it ended up being quite a lot, yet we finished everything without getting tired of it. Breakfast also had an impressive number of items, so we skipped lunch... In the men’s large public bath, there is one hotter bath indoors and one outdoors, plus two cooler baths (a waterfall-style bath and a reclining bath). There is also a sauna and a cold plunge. For me, even the “hot” baths felt slightly lukewarm. Because of that I didn’t try the waterfall-style bath, but I later learned on the website that it is free-flowing from the source—what a shame. Unlike places such as Noboribetsu or Arima, Dogo does not have abundant water, so it isn’t an Onsen town filled with rising steam. If you look only at the Onsen facilities inside the Ryokan, you may feel the large public bath is inevitably on the small side; however, since we specifically chose a Room with a private open-air bath this time, our in-Room bath was our main focus. We relaxed without worrying about time—soaking late at night while gazing up at the moon. The only inconvenience was the changing area and washing area. You can close the shoji screens and change in the small room, but since the outdoor washing area is too cold to use in winter, you end up washing either in your in-Room bath or in the large public bath. There are chairs as well, so this private open-air bath may be even more enjoyable in summer. This trip was for my wife’s birthday, which is why we chose in-Room dining. When I emailed Dogokan in advance to let them know, they prepared a wonderful surprise for us. Thank you as well for taking photos—it became a truly memorable trip.

    Well-balanced.

First, the meals were very satisfying in both presentation and taste. There was a small accident during serving, but the staff member in charge—who seemed not yet fully accustomed to the work—handled it earnestly, which left a good impression. (However, their explanation was very hard to hear, so I think it would be better if they spoke a little louder.) Also, the garden straight ahead on the left side of the lobby—the crane-and-tortoise pine tree—was wonderful, and I was truly impressed. What was disappointing was that the Onsen temperature was low. I’m not sure if it just happened that way or if it depended on the time, but both the hotter bath and the open-air bath felt lukewarm, and other guests bathing said the same thing. Since the main attraction is really the Onsen, I felt this was a bit of a shame. Overall it was clean (though there were some areas that were slightly worn or old) and comfortable; service was attentive; and despite being reasonably priced for an Accommodation stay, it offered more than enough. My companion also said that among all places we’ve stayed in Dogo so far, this one had the best balance and they were very pleased as well, so we would like to stay again. We hope for better Onsen temperature next time.

We had a relaxing and delicious stay.

It was my first Onsen visit in a while, and I had a very relaxing and enjoyable time. The bath and the room were both excellent. The meals were satisfying in both taste and quantity. Additionally, the staff member assigned to our room provided attentive yet comfortable service, making our stay pleasant. I look forward to staying here again.
