    The parking lot is l...

    The parking lot is less than a 1-minute walk from the Accommodation, but cars cannot be brought right up to the entrance, so the proprietress came to our car to pick up our luggage. Dinner was the Shige-no-Ie group dining Plan; the hot pot was served with their homemade broth instead of ponzu, and it was very delicious. The soba rice porridge served at breakfast was also very tasty. However, we chose a room with an open-air bath, but perhaps due to its age, one tile had come off and there were quite a few dirty bits of sealant and debris floating in the water, which was disappointing. There were several other spots that felt loose when touched, so I think they should be repaired before more tiles come off. My husband used it and said both the Onsen and the garden were wonderful, but my daughter and I couldn’t use it because it felt unclean, which was unfortunate. All of the staff were easy to talk to and spoke to my daughter every time they saw her; everyone was very friendly and it was great.

    It was a blissful stay, enjoying local sake and the Onsen.

    We stayed at the end of the year. We always look forward to the Onsen, especially enjoying it while viewing the koi swimming. The Shinshu local sake tasting Plan we used this time was very satisfying for our family who loves sake. The staff’s attentive care was polite and left a great impression. Having a sofa in the Room would make it even more relaxing. The views of Obasute and the Chikuma River were also beautiful, and we would like to visit again in a different season.

    Luxurious furnishings

    I visited for the first time in January. When I arrived at the Accommodation, I was immediately captivated by the magnificent Nishikigoi in the large aquarium at the front. On the way to my Room on the second floor, I was amazed by the massive stone arrangements and found myself wondering just how much weight this building was designed to withstand. I was then shown to a Room called “Waterwheel.” The Room featured an impressive waterwheel set into the wall, and I was simply mesmerized by its exceptionally elaborate design. Even the sink in the washbasin area was lined with agate—an extraordinary touch that made me unable to help but wonder (pardon my curiosity) how much it must have cost to build this Accommodation. Of course, the garden is also wonderful. The hot spring water had a gentle sulfur scent and felt very pleasant on the skin. Meals were served in-room for both breakfast and dinner, and everything tasted excellent. Every staff member was attentive, allowing me to spend my time comfortably. I chose this place based on Reviews, and it more than lived up to them—I would love to return in a different season.

    The Onsen was of exceptional quality, and the meals were truly unforgettable.

    The Onsen was excellent, and what impressed me most was how delicious the meals were. I was moved by each dish—it truly felt like professional cooking. They also offer a health-conscious medicinal cuisine menu, and having it during the colder season really warmed me up. The hospitality was wonderful as well; the proprietress and all the staff were very kind and attentive.\n\nIt’s not enough to lower my rating, but many modern Hotels have outlets or USB ports by the bedside for charging smartphones. Since this is a more traditional-style room, I had to use an extension cord to charge near the bed, which may feel a bit inconvenient if you’re used to newer Hotels. That said, charging is still possible, so it wasn’t a major issue.\n\nThey change the menu with each season, so I’d love to visit again.

    There are many Ryokans with charm despite their age, but this one felt simply outdated in aspects such as the pathway from the parking lot to the entrance, the view or enclosure from the room, and even details like faucets in the bathroom. The final blow was finding trash left in the bedroom (something I’d rather not describe), which completely ruined my mood. That said, I was satisfied with their hospitality, meals, and soft Onsen water, making it all the more disappointing.

    Traditional Ryokan

    The building shows some age, but it has been nicely renovated in places, making for a comfortable stay. The meals were hearty and delicious. The hospitality was excellent, as expected from a long-established ryokan. However, the parking location was a bit difficult to find; it would be helpful if there were a large sign on the accommodation's wall indicating the parking area. I look forward to visiting again—thank you!

    The accommodation exceeded our expectations.

    The high review rating raised my expectations, but this accommodation exceeded them by far. The open-air bath at night was exceptional. The lukewarm water (as I personally dislike hot water and cannot enter it) was perfect, and I wished to stay in it forever. While the open-air bath for men is available in the morning, nighttime seems to offer a better experience. The staff were all wonderful and treated my 2-year-old daughter with great care, which made me very happy. This was the first accommodation where they properly called my daughter by her name. The meals were incredibly delicious, the individually wrapped high-quality bath towels were impressive, and the selection of yukata had excellent taste—everything about this place was delightful. The attention to detail in the building design was also remarkable. If I had to point out areas for improvement: drinks in the lounge being charged separately, no allowance for bringing your own beverages, sound leakage (my daughter's voice seemed audible from outside), and amenities that felt more like those of a business hotel. Personally, as we don't use any provided amenities such as hair caps, brushes, toothbrushes or razors at all in our family’s case—it didn’t bother us—but they did give off a cheap impression. In fact I'd prefer if there weren’t any rather than having low-quality ones; however some guests might complain if nothing is provided at all! My daughter amusingly played around using one hair cap though! This experience reaffirmed how truly amazing accommodations with high reviews can be. I’m looking forward to enjoying the souvenirs we purchased during our stay. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    A highly satisfying accommodation.

    Shigeno House is excellent, and my wife is very satisfied. The atmosphere of the entrance, front door, and waiting area is wonderful. The Room setup is superb and comfortable. Meals are served in the Room with chairs for a relaxing experience. The food was delicious, though it felt slightly nostalgic; perhaps some innovative ideas could be added. Just my personal thought! Overall, it was a very satisfying day. Thank you so much; we will use your services again!

    A nostalgic Ryokan w...

    A nostalgic Ryokan with a simple and calming atmosphere. The open-air bath in the Room is not very spacious but thoughtfully designed, with koi fish swimming below, which was quite fascinating. If I ever plan a leisurely trip to Nagano for sightseeing, I would love to include a stay at this Ryokan again.

    It became a wonderful memory.

    My mother, whom I brought along as a gesture of filial piety, was truly satisfied! Especially the meals were absolutely delightful!! From the warm welcome to the heartfelt farewell by the hostess and staff, despite their busy schedules, we were able to enjoy a relaxing stay. I rated the room 4 because I found out just before our visit that the reserved room was a "smoking-allowed room." While my mother had no issues at all, I couldn't help but notice the smell of cigarettes due to my own sensitivity. Next time, I would love to have a multiple night stay in a different room. Thank you so much!

    Relax and enjoy the Onsen.

    We stayed here for a family trip after a long time. We chose this Ryokan for its quiet atmosphere and delicious-looking meals, considering inbound tourism, and we were also looking forward to the Onsen. It was a very satisfying stay. We will definitely stay here again when visiting Nagano.

    Experience the best of traditional Japanese Ryokan with exceptional Onsen and cuisine.

    This was my first stay. The matcha and apricot pickles served at check-in were exquisite. The interior features abundant use of wood, giving a traditional Ryokan atmosphere. In the room with a private open-air bath, you can enjoy the garden view and watch large koi swimming in the Onsen below. The tableware was beautiful, and each dish was carefully prepared. The staff were kind, making for a pleasant stay.

    Excellent

    We stayed here for a family trip. We were satisfied with everything, including the Room, bath, and service. The food was especially outstanding; every dish was excellent. Since we rarely have the chance to enjoy a relaxed meal together as a family of four, it was a truly wonderful experience.

    Savor exceptionally delicious and flavorful cuisine.

    What my spouse and I look forward to the most during our stay is dinner, so we often choose accommodations with high food ratings. Among them, Shigenoya stands out as one of the top 1 or 2 for its incredible taste, leaving us deeply impressed. The variety of small dishes naturally paired well with drinks, leading to a slower dining pace on our part, but the staff accommodated us without any displeasure, which we greatly appreciated. Additionally, since we usually skip breakfast at home and often feel heavy after eating breakfast at accommodations, Shigenoya's breakfast was a pleasant surprise with its light and gentle dishes like soba porridge and chawanmushi that were easy to enjoy. The hospitality from the proprietress and all the staff was exceptional, making it a truly wonderful stay. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again!

    This is my fourth stay.

    This is our fourth stay at this accommodation, having visited twice a year for the summer Ayu Kaiseki and autumn Matsutake Kaiseki. The staff had a thorough understanding of our past stays and made suggestions even before we voiced any requests. It is a wonderful ryokan with thoughtful hospitality unique to Japanese accommodations. We plan to visit again in autumn.

    Shigeno House is simply the best.

    This time, it was my wife, my eldest son, and I staying here. It’s the 7th time for my wife? And the 2nd time for my son and me. Every time we visit Shigenoya Accommodation, we feel... it’s amazing! It makes us want to come back again. Next time, we hope to stay as a family of seven.

    It's definitely the best in our home.

    As my daughter grew older, we started visiting resorts with various activities more often, and it had been quite a while since our last stay. After more than a year, we enjoyed soaking in the relaxing onsen together, indulging in delicious meals, and having a restful time. I’m not an onsen accommodation critic, so I may not express it well, but I was reminded once again that this is truly the best for our family. Now we’re adjusting our schedules daily to decide when we can visit next. We’ll be back!

    I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

    This was my first visit to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen. I went to the bath right after check-in. I thoroughly enjoyed the delightful sulfur aroma and the fresh, perfectly tempered natural Onsen water flowing directly from the source. Additionally, the dinner was outstanding. The appetizers featuring fragrant mushrooms and Shinshu salmon paired perfectly with chilled sake, making it hard to stop. The sashimi, with its incredible freshness and craftsmanship, made me question, "Is this really Nagano?" It was exceptional. Of course, the breakfast was also absolutely delicious. I was thoroughly satisfied. Spring mountain vegetables or autumn mushrooms—either way, this is a beautiful and wonderful Property that makes me want to visit again without fail.

    Overrated?

    There are no issues with the service or cleaning, but since it is an old-fashioned building, the noise from the neighboring Room and the footsteps in the hallway at night were very disturbing. I couldn't sleep well. The meals are reasonably tasty, but perhaps a bit too elaborate. There were quite a few dishes where fruits like apples were mixed with fish or meat, which didn't suit me as I prefer to enjoy the natural flavors. The private baths, which you can use for free if available, and the large public bath with a faint sulfur smell are pleasant. Unfortunately, overall, I cannot say the cost performance is good. I had high expectations, so I must say the Review is overrated.

    I enjoyed a quiet and relaxing time!

    This was my first time visiting Togura Kamiyamada Onsen, and staying at Shigenoya made it a truly satisfying trip. With its 60 years of history, the Property exuded charm, and the Room and furnishings were filled with a wonderful atmosphere. The welcome with matcha tea instantly relieved the fatigue of the long journey. The Onsen, including the open-air bath and private Onsen, allowed us to fully relax and warm ourselves. As a group of women in our 50s dealing with daily worries, this trip was truly healing and gave us the strength to keep going. The Room was adjusted with a table for my back pain, and we enjoyed a delicious dinner served in the Room, chatting freely and savoring the meal. The Shinshu miso shabu-shabu was absolutely exquisite. This has become one of the Properties I would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    It was a property that healed fatigue.

    I searched for a Property available during the New Year and made a Reservation based on high Review ratings. Perhaps due to good timing, it was fully booked during the year-end and New Year holidays. The sulfur hot spring had an ideal temperature, and I bathed five times. The meals were delicious with a mild flavor, and despite being served in the Room, the service was at an appropriate speed. Thank you for your hospitality.

    You can enjoy the pleasures of each season.

    This is my second visit this year. Each time, I enjoyed delicious seasonal cuisine. The entire Stays is calm, allowing me to relax and heal the fatigue of the year-end. The bath is good, the Room is comfortable, and of course, the hospitality of the landlady and staff is wonderful. On the second day, I took a walk along the Chikuma River. Many photographers visit, and there are herons and ducks, allowing me to once again appreciate the richness of the Chikuma River. I would like to visit again in a different season.

    I was extremely satisfied with the matsutake course at Shigeno-ya for the second time. I was impressed by the warm hospitality of the proprietress and all the staff, as well as the comfortable atmosphere. I look forward to visiting again in the spring.
