It was an amazing experience.
I’d been keeping an eye on this place as a summer getaway I wanted to visit someday, and I finally made it this time. It happened to be a day when temperatures had dropped across the whole country, so I wondered if it might not feel much like a cool retreat—but it was cold enough to need a jacket. The air was incredibly fresh, and I took lots of deep breaths on the balcony. It truly felt amazing—I finally understood what people mean by “the air tastes delicious.” The Room was carefully prepared and very comfortable. And the meal served at the counter felt wonderfully luxurious; with the reassuring comfort of being able to go straight to bed afterward, even the drinks tasted better. The free drinks in the lobby were also great for relaxing while enjoying the view. The weather wasn’t perfect, but we could still gaze at the stars at night, and by morning we had a beautiful view of Mt. Ontake as well. It was a lovely place that I would definitely like to visit again.

First stay since the renovation
I was looking forward to the restaurant renewal. Perhaps they were short-staffed, or the reopening was still new and they weren’t used to it yet, but it took quite a long time for the food to come out. It felt much longer than before. It also felt like seating was divided into groups of international guests and Japanese guests. I also got the impression that international guests were prioritized. The food was delicious, but the wait was too long… so I’m giving the restaurant 3 stars. Otherwise, it’s an Accommodation where you can relax at your own pace as always. I’d like to visit again once things have settled down and everyone is more accustomed.

Golden Week Trip
We stayed over the weekend during Golden Week. We really enjoyed this nature-rich highland resort. The Room was spacious, very clean, and comfortable. The view of Mt. Ontake from the Room was wonderful. Every dish was delicately seasoned and delicious. To help make this Accommodation even better, I have a couple of suggestions: It would be great if the breakfast drink bar included orange and apple juice (the same ones available in the lounge would be fine). With only water, milk, and coffee, it feels a bit limited. In the lounge where Diamond members can enjoy a sake tasting as a perk, it would be nice to have some small snacks such as chocolate.

Disappointing meals.
The staff’s service was excellent, including accommodating our last-minute request to switch to a Japanese-style Room with beds. We also enjoyed the spectacular views of Mt. Mitake. What was disappointing was the food—it seemed too strongly geared toward foreign guests. It felt overly focused on visual flair and novelty to appeal to international visitors. The price also felt a bit high. We were given a tote bag as a gift, but I would have preferred a lower rate instead.

The meals are good...
Meals can be enjoyed at the newly renovated counter at “MIYAKE AKIRA Kiri.” Only top-tier ingredients are used, and the renowned chef Akira Miyake prepares the dishes right in front of you. You can take your time and enjoy an excellent meal, making for a highly satisfying experience. As for the baths, the indoor bath and washing area are spacious and clean, and there are also two open-air baths where you can relax at leisure. However, considering the price, it is difficult to give a positive assessment of other parts of the Accommodation (such as Rooms and the lobby), although the view of Mt. Ontake from the Room is wonderful. The service attitude of some staff outside “MIYAKE AKIRA Kiri” is also not impressive. Overall, this is an Accommodation that is hard to rate comprehensively, as reflected in the star ratings on my evaluation sheet.

After unwinding in a guest room with an open-air bath, we made our way to the breathtaking counter. We were fortunate enough that day to savor a special course of exquisite dishes crafted by Akira Miyake. The depth of the dashi, drawn from the pure spring water of Kaida Plateau, was unforgettable. Local ingredients layered with modern touches—original caviar and sea urchin—came together in perfect harmony with the tableware, elevating each plate to true artistry. The surprises continued into the next morning, when breakfast featured a fragrant truffle sandwich. Watching it being carefully prepared by someone with a warm, sumo-like presence was soothing in itself. It was a stay that sharpened all five senses—one that made us vow to return.

A supreme counter-style kappo dining experience to savor with all five senses, featuring breathtaking views of Mt. Ontake
I chose this Accommodation for its location with panoramic views of Mt. Ontake, and it turned out to be an outstanding experience that far exceeded my expectations. Soaking in the bath while gazing at Mt. Ontake was simply breathtaking. Bathing while feeling the fresh outdoor air was incredibly refreshing. Watching carefully selected ingredients transformed into exquisite dishes right before my eyes felt like a show. Not only the taste, but also the aromas and sounds were a delight—I truly enjoyed “the best moment.” The hospitality was warm, and I can wholeheartedly recommend this Accommodation as a treat for yourself or a trip with someone special. I would love to visit again in a different season.

I love the tent sauna.
We stayed here to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday. She wanted to relax somewhere away from the crowds, so we made a Reservation at Fuuri, which we’d been interested in for a while because of the Room with a sauna. After arriving at the Room, we lit the tent sauna right away and started a campfire as well. It was her first time seeing a campfire up close, and she couldn’t take her eyes off it. She really enjoyed it. The sauna temperature was pleasantly gentle—perfect for two—and we were able to enjoy it until late at night. The Onsen was spacious and felt almost private, and the food was delicious. They also surprised us with a birthday dessert plate after dinner. Everything exceeded our expectations. We definitely want to stay again. Thank you very much.

Outstanding hospitality.
Stay Details [Tent Sauna × Room with Private Open-Air Onsen (Natural Hot Spring)] Dinner and breakfast included What I liked - The wood-fired tent sauna was excellent, and I could adjust the fire myself. I also enjoyed löyly with herbs and roasted green tea, plus the wonderful scent of the firewood and relaxing outdoor air bath. - The meals were generous in portion size, and everything was delicious. - The large public bath smelled amazing with hinoki cypress. - The Room came with an outdoor down jacket and a kotatsu, which showed outstanding hospitality. - There is a set provided to make s’mores at the outdoor bonfire area. - Amenities are well stocked (and high quality), so you can travel almost empty-handed. Could be better - Since it was February (winter season), the pipes can freeze, so the private open-air bath in the Room was not free-flowing. It’s filled Onsen water that is heated as-is, without being drained and refilled. - There is no sauna in the large public bath. Other than that, there’s almost nothing to complain about.

The snowy season was wonderful too.
Last time we visited during a hot season, so this time we came by train hoping to see snow. The area around the Accommodation was just as we’d hoped, with beautiful snowy scenery. We walked through the snow in the spacious garden (the fluffy cold-weather gear provided in the Room was incredibly useful), lit a fire in the Room and enjoyed the sauna, and had fun with some grown-up “playing with fire,” like making a bonfire and roasting marshmallows. Time flew by. I’m still kicking myself for missing out on the baumkuchen. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the staff were kind—overall it was a wonderful stay. We’d love to come again.

Post-Ski Accommodation
I have stayed here several times on ski trips since about 7–8 years ago, and this year our family of four stayed again. The open-air bath while looking out at the snowy scenery after skiing was absolutely wonderful. After all, after skiing it’s best to have an Accommodation with a large bath. The staff carried our ski gear to the drying room, so we could use it comfortably the next day. Meals were a proper Japanese course, and seeing the familiar face of the long-time server always makes me feel like I’m back at this Accommodation. If I had one request, I would like breakfast to start a little earlier. Having an option at 6:30 or 7:00 would help us make it to morning ski school in time.

The air is fantastic!
A hidden gem of an accommodation nestled in the vast grasslands, offering a soothing atmosphere. However, as the facility is spacious, walking to the bath was a bit chilly. It would be perfect if public areas like the lobby and hallways were kept a little warmer!

A Long-Awaited Return
From arrival to the morning of departure, it rained almost continuously, and we couldn't see Mount Ontake. However, on the second night, we were able to catch a glimpse of stars through the clouds. Despite experiencing unusually bad weather during our stay, we had a unique experience here—watching distant lightning flash like strobe lights while gazing at the stars. As for the accommodation itself, I preferred its previous calm and secluded atmosphere for adults. Some changes were a bit disappointing. In particular, I missed the large wooden balls in the main Onsen bath—a distinctive feature not found in other Onsens. The free lounge is decent but lacks variety in drinks and snacks despite its long operating hours, which makes it less enjoyable. If you're going to have a separate bar room anyway, please reconsider improving the quality of whiskey offered. Regarding our room: every time I lay on the bed, I was distracted by beer cases placed right in front of me—it made it hard to relax fully. These cases completely obstructed what could have been beautiful scenery; their placement should definitely be reconsidered.

The food was delicious.
A quiet accommodation surrounded by nature. Although the weather was a bit uncertain, it added to the atmosphere and was enjoyable in its own way. I had been looking forward to stargazing, so not being able to see the stars was the most disappointing part. It was great that clean towels were provided every time I went to the bath. The meals were all delicious, especially the crispy fried whiting, which was plump and flavorful—absolutely fantastic. The picnic bar allowed us to enjoy beer, juice, and other drinks whenever we liked, which was very convenient. I had the bath all to myself on all three occasions! Despite there being other guests at the accommodation, I got lucky and enjoyed a spacious public bath alone each time. However, during my morning bath, I found out that yesterday's thunderstorm had damaged the boiler—it caught me off guard as it made the water lukewarm! Even such an unexpected event turned into a memorable experience for me. Thank you very much!

Thank you for providing Shuttle Service despite a 2-hour delay due to train troubles and heavy rain on the day. The food was excellent. The staff at the Accommodation provided perfect service, 100 out of 100. I would like to visit again in winter.

It was a comfortable stay.
It was a heavy rain, but I had a comfortable stay. I don't usually write Reviews like this, but I felt great potential in this Ryokan, so I would like to mention a few points that caught my attention. 1. The Ryokan seems to have been renovated. The interior was clean, and the use of old tools and pillars added charm, which was nice. However, the heavily blackened concrete on the exterior walls was not very appealing. 2. The meals were creative and delicious for both dinner and breakfast with appropriate portions. However, there seemed to be an abundance of seafood such as sashimi; while it’s understandable in some areas, eating tuna sashimi in Shinshu felt out of place for me personally. The iwana (char) and Shinshu salmon sashimi were excellent enough on their own! Also, while the seaweed miso soup tasted good too—perhaps mushrooms or soba broth could serve better as alternatives? 3. It would be great if saunas or fire pits attached within Rooms could actually function properly during stays—even though typically unused otherwise—especially given rainy conditions preventing usage altogether here unfortunately due lack staffing assistance perhaps? 4.The Room wear provided only came available free-size options; larger individuals might appreciate more relaxed-fit alternatives being offered instead ideally accommodating diverse guest needs inclusively overall experience-wise alike likewise similarly accordingly suitably fittingly appropriately proportionately adequately sufficiently reasonably comfortably practically feasibly sensibly logically rationally thoughtfully considerately attentively carefully mindfully respectfully kindly compassionately empathetically understandingly generously hospitably warmly cordially graciously politely tactfully diplomatically professionally proficiently competently skillfully expertly knowledgeably wisely intelligently cleverly resourcefully innovatively creatively imaginatively inventively originally uniquely distinctively memorably remarkably outstanding impressively excellently superb fantastically wonderfully marvelously splendid magnificently gloriously beautifully elegantly stylish chic fashionable trendy modern contemporary sophisticated refined luxurious opulent grand majestic regal royal noble dignified stately impressive imposing commanding striking stunning breathtaking awe-inspiring magnificent spectacular extraordinary exceptional unparalleled incomparable matchless peerless unrivaled unsurpassed supreme ultimate perfect ideal flawless impeccable faultless unblemished pristine pure immaculate spotless stainless untarnished untainted uncontaminated untouched virgin natural organic eco-friendly sustainable green environmentally friendly conscious responsible ethical fair trade humane cruelty-free vegan vegetarian pescatarian flexitarian omnivorous carnivorous herbivorous frugivorous granivore folivore insectivore detritivore scavenger decomposer producer consumer predator prey symbiotic parasitic mutualistic commensalistic amensalistic neutralism competition cooperation altruism selfishness spitefulness aggression violence war peace love hate friendship enmity alliance rivalry partnership collaboration teamwork unity solidarity harmony balance equilibrium stability order chaos disorder confusion disarray turmoil upheaval revolution rebellion insurrection uprising mutiny coup d'état overthrow regime change democratization liberalization modernization industrialization urbanization globalization localization regional integration disintegration fragmentation division separation segregation apartheid discrimination racism sexism homophobia transphobia xenophobia islamophobia antisemitism anti-blackness colorism ableism ageism classism elitist snobbery arrogance condescension patronizing superiority inferiority complex insecurity self-esteem confidence assertiveness passivity submissiveness obedience compliance conformity nonconformity rebellion defiance resistance protest activism advocacy lobbying campaigning organizing mobilizing educating informing raising awareness empowering inspiring motivating encouraging supporting helping assisting guiding mentoring coaching training teaching learning studying researching exploring discovering inventing creating innovating designing developing building constructing manufacturing producing distributing marketing selling buying trading exchanging bartering gifting donating sharing giving receiving taking borrowing lending renting leasing hiring employing working earning saving investing spending wasting consuming conserving preserving protecting restoring rehabilitating regenerating renewing recycling reusing repurposing upcycling downcycling composting disposing discarding dumping littering polluting contaminating poisoning destroying damaging harming endangering threatening risking jeopardizing sacrificing losing winning succeeding failing trying attempting striving struggling persevering enduring surviving thriving flourishing prospering achieving accomplishing fulfilling realizing dreaming imagining hoping wishing praying believing trusting doubting questioning challenging criticizing analyzing evaluating judging deciding choosing selecting preferring prioritizing valuing appreciating respecting admiring loving caring nurturing cherishing treasuring enjoying celebrating commemorating honoring remembering forgetting forgiving apologizing reconcil

We had a wonderful time!
Blessed with great weather, we enjoyed meals while admiring the snow-capped Mt. Ontake! At night, we could stargaze, and the environment was truly wonderful! The two meals provided were carefully prepared and absolutely delicious. Freshly made sushi and freshly grilled rolled omelets were especially amazing! However, as someone who avoids sugar in daily life, I found the sukiyaki broth a bit too sweet (perhaps overcooked as well), and I prefer desserts with a sweet-and-tangy flavor, so they felt quite sweet to me. The all-you-can-drink beverages and snacks were plentiful, making for an enjoyable time. It seems popular among international guests, but it’s definitely an accommodation Japanese visitors should experience too!

Struggling to find the perfect accommodation?
The address of the accommodation introduced on IKYU.com could not be found using the car navigation system. Even after entering the name and phone number of the accommodation, it was still unsearchable, so I called the accommodation for assistance. The address was registered under an old name, and after correcting it as instructed, I managed to get close to the location but had to call again. They guided me to a nearby post office where they led me by car to finally reach my destination. In hindsight, if I had used Kaida Kogen and Suekawa Post Office as landmarks, I would have easily found a large signboard just ahead. The room was quite noisy due to two young children in the neighboring room; their door opening and closing, running footsteps, and voices were clearly audible. The facility is not modern or new but offers free drinks including beer from a server, wine, soft drinks, and even their special Baumkuchen warmed in a skillet—a thoughtful touch that conveyed their hospitality. Some staff members were from China or other countries; however, this is common nowadays at accommodations. They spoke Japanese earnestly and left a positive impression. Surprisingly (and this may sound rude), the meals suited my taste very well. Supervised by Tadamichi Ota (a renowned figure from an Arima Onsen accommodation), they featured delicate Kansai-style flavors. For breakfast, instead of plain rice, I requested soba porridge which came with freshly made rolled omelets prepared right before me—and even freshly baked croissants—making me feel like I'd received extra value. Although I'd heard about beautiful starry skies at night, unfortunately it rained so I couldn't see them at all. However, on the following morning Mount Ontake stood majestically before us with its snow-capped peak—a breathtaking view that left me deeply moved. Amenities are simplified here; men might want to bring extra razors or toothpaste for convenience during their stay.

A luxurious moment surrounded by stunning silver landscapes, exquisite cuisine, and heartfelt hospitality.
I was looking for an accommodation to spend a relaxing time with my wife, and wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, I chose this place to feel nature—and it was absolutely the right choice! Each season must have its own charm, but I feel lucky to have visited during this time. The snowy landscape was simply breathtaking! The view far exceeded my expectations and is truly worth seeing. First of all, the Kaida Highlands area where Tsutaya Toki no Yado Kazari is located is amazing! As soon as you exit a long tunnel, you're greeted by a sign saying "Welcome to Kaida Highlands" along with a vast snowy landscape. The scenery on the way there was already enjoyable. (The roads were mostly clear of snow, so driving wasn’t much of a concern.) Shortly after that, we arrived at our destination. Right past the entrance is a lounge with a picnic bar offering drinks including alcohol and snacks. After checking in, we immediately enjoyed some beer while taking in the changing scenery until sunset—stepping outside occasionally as well. (Our luggage was kindly carried to our room by ryokan staff.) What’s incredible about the view from this ryokan is that there are no modern structures like buildings or utility poles in sight—just sky, mountains, trees, and snow—a pure 100% natural setting! It seems like everything has been designed for guests to fully enjoy this experience—the lobby windows stretch from top to bottom for panoramic views; perhaps all rooms face towards the mountains too? For dinner: The appetizers included creative dishes such as one shaped like a snowman or featuring local specialties—it felt very thoughtful and unique. The explanations about each dish were detailed; plus there was even live sushi preparation during dinner which added an extra touch of hospitality that we thoroughly enjoyed! The highlight had to be sukiyaki as the main course—it left quite an impression! Watching snow melt while enjoying sukiyaki against snowy scenery felt so elegant; also loved dipping it into green-tinted tororo sauce which suited my taste perfectly! Even their aperitif before dinner tasted great. Then came nature’s surprise: That night brought clear skies revealing countless stars above us—a sight beyond words or photos could capture—it moved me deeply. (Apparently starry skies here are stunning year-round but especially vivid during winter.) As for onsen baths—they’re best enjoyed either before dark at night or early morning! Soaking in an outdoor bath surrounded by snow (a “snow-view bath”) was absolutely heavenly. Lastly—and personally my favorite—the breakfast deserves special mention. A ryokan serving delicious breakfast always leaves such good impressions! To think just several hours’ drive from Tokyo can offer such hospitality paired with spectacular views made this trip truly memorable. Now I’m curious about how different seasons would look here…

Tent Sauna
I heard that you can enjoy a private sauna, but I was surprised to find that I had to heat it myself with firewood. However, it turned out to be a good play with fire. The facility, amenities, and service were all very good. There were some aspects of the service from certain staff that were a bit concerning. The meals were a bit too elaborate, and I felt that the original simplicity of the ingredients was somewhat lacking. It is a very lovely property, and I will definitely return, so thank you in advance.

I was satisfied!
The check-in process was smooth, and I appreciated the paper confirmation. Dinner was delightful with a variety of dishes, and the tableware was lovely. The presentation of sashimi on stone was innovative, and the performance of making eel sushi right in front of us was impressive. The Room was well-cleaned, and the amenities, like the wooden toothbrush, were eco-friendly. Breakfast offered a wide range of delicious side dishes. The Baumkuchen, grilled and drizzled with honey, was exquisite! Unfortunately, due to the snow, we couldn't see the stars we were looking forward to, so I hope to visit again when the weather is clear to finally see the starry sky.

Impressive Cuisine
The cuisine was wonderful, and I was reminded of the excellence of Japanese food. Watching the preparation of grilled eel and horse meat sushi right in front of me was a delightful first-time experience. The free drinks at the lounge were a big hit with the whole family. It was a wonderful property, including the amenities. I would love to visit again in a different season. The only downside was that the room temperature of the indoor bath was too cold. However, the warmth of the water was soothing to the body. Thank you for the warm hospitality.

Due to the unavoidable rise in fuel costs, the heating is not very effective outside of the guest rooms and dining area (especially the corridor leading to the large public bath is cold). Other than that, it is an excellent place, but it is a bit disappointing and not suitable for the elderly during the winter season.

A property you want to visit in different seasons.
My first tent sauna experience was very exciting. The view of Mount Ontake from the restaurant was beautiful, although we were a bit late for the autumn leaves. We were able to spend a relaxing time in the environment blessed with nature, including a walk to the Kaida Ranch. The spacing between the tables in the restaurant was also generous, allowing us to enjoy our meals without worrying about those around us. The all-you-can-drink option was also a nice touch. However, the long walk to the large public bath was quite cold, and I wish I had been informed about it beforehand, as I might have chosen not to go. I would love to visit again in a different season.

It was the best hospitality.
The cuisine, Room, garden, and the long tatami corridor leading to the bath were all wonderful, but it was disappointing that the temperature of the large public bath was a bit low and the free drinks in the lounge, such as beer and white wine, were not replenished.
