    Overall, everything was good except for the meals. I was also a bit bothered by a strange smell in the hallway. The meals were served in a private dining Room, but they felt lacking, especially in presentation. The view from the Room was great. The open-air bath was hot, but it was still fine!

    Both breakfast and dinner were delicious. They were also considerate of my solo stay, and I was able to relax comfortably with seating arranged facing the window. However, the moment I entered the building, I noticed a distinctive odor, and that feeling continued until checkout. The Room itself did not have an odor, but right after entering I found hair on the tatami mats and the low table was also dirty. Still, with the Kinugawa River flowing right by the window, I felt fully refreshed by its soothing atmosphere.

    It was very reasonably priced, which was great. Compared with when I stayed about 30 years ago, the building does feel more aged, but the Room and toilet were clean. The open-air bath temperature was low, and I wondered if it might be due to the recent rise in fuel costs.

    Overall, I was satisfied.

    Overall, I was mostly satisfied. As an area for improvement, the tatami in the Room had not been cleaned thoroughly and there were hairs left behind. The table was also dusty. Other than that, it was acceptable.

    An Accommodation You’ll Want to Return To

    Both the meals and the Room were extremely satisfying. Everything was delicious at both breakfast and dinner, and I ended up eating more than usual.

    The meal was delicious.

    Both dinner and breakfast were very delicious and satisfying. It was a bit disappointing that they didn’t feel particularly unique to this Ryokan. The Ryokan building is old, and as soon as I entered I noticed a musty smell typical of older buildings. I walked around each floor, and it was especially unpleasant near the restrooms on the second floor. I didn’t notice it inside the Room. My Room had a bath, but the bathtub and wash basin felt rough, there was dust all over the shelves, and overall the cleaning level seemed low. The large public bath is spacious, so it felt cold. You have to walk barefoot to get to the open-air bath, and I was concerned about bugs crawling around. Also, it wasn’t clear whether the valuables lockers were usable. There is a vending machine with frozen meals, so even a Plan without dinner should be fine.

    Just a short walk fr...

    Just a short walk from the station with excellent access, and both breakfast and dinner were delicious. We were able to relax and enjoy our meals in a private Room. For dinner, each of us was served freshly cooked white rice from a small individual kamado pot, which made us very happy! At breakfast as well, the fish and yudofu were each heated at the table, so we could enjoy a warm meal. The large public bath was not overly crowded and felt spacious, allowing us to relax and enjoy the hot water. The Room was also spacious, making for a very comfortable stay. The only thing that bothered me was a slightly musty smell in the elevator, but the Facility was new and clean overall. It’s also close to central Tokyo, and I would love to stay again.

    A traditional Onsen Accommodation known for its striking dolls. Relax in a casual, comfortable atmosphere.

    Conveniently located as a base for sightseeing in Nikko, making it easy to get around. What stood out first inside the Ryokan was the many dolls and portraits on display—perhaps the proprietress’s hobby. They were quite impressive, and I think it’s a space that fans will love. Our 3-year-old was a little scared, but it still made for a memorable stay. Feeding the koi was also fun and a nice plus for families with children. The Onsen had an open-air bath with pleasantly warm water and an indoor bath that was slightly hotter; both were very relaxing. The meals felt like those at a traditional Onsen Accommodation or guesthouse, with a comforting sense of nostalgia. The portions were just right—not too much or too little—and easy to enjoy. There were some signs of age in the Room, but they added to the Ryokan’s charm and atmosphere. This isn’t an Accommodation for those seeking luxury or special productions, but we could feel the staff’s thoughtfulness and enjoy the comfort of a good old-fashioned Onsen stay. It’s well suited to anyone who wants to relax without pretense.

    Relax in the Onsen

    This was my first time visiting Kinugawa Onsen. I stayed for two nights in a newly renovated Room. The Onsen was very relaxing and enjoyable. There isn’t much around Kinugawa-Koen Station, but that actually made it easier to unwind. The chef’s heartfelt cuisine was wonderful, and I found myself enjoying more drinks than usual. Thank you very much. The collection of dolls gathered by the proprietress, including Hina Matsuri dolls, was also impressive.

    It may feel a bit old-fashioned, but it’s a quiet and pleasant Onsen Accommodation.

    The Hotel’s Facility is a bit old, but the large public bath has a sauna and an open-air bath, and the Onsen was very relaxing. The Room was spacious even for two people, so we could unwind comfortably. The meals were delicious, and the staff provided friendly, pleasant service.

    This was my first time staying here.\nThe property was very clean, and a staff member from overseas who spoke excellent Japanese kindly explained everything to us. The Room was also very spacious and comfortable.\nThe large public bath was spacious, and the open-air bath was clean as well.\nI also loved being able to use the open-air bath in the guest room in the morning while enjoying the snowy scenery.\nBoth dinner and breakfast were served in a private dining room, so we could relax and enjoy them. Everything was delicious.\nI would love to stay again!

    The Room was shockin...

    The Room was shockingly unclean during our family trip. The table was clearly not wiped, the snack basket on the table was covered in dust, and the house dust was so overwhelming that we couldn't sleep at night. As for the meals, during dinner, an item listed on the menu was forgotten and replaced with dessert without any apology when we pointed it out. The private open-air bath in the guest room was nice, but everything else ruined our family trip. We were given some snacks as an apology upon departure, but proper hospitality should have been provided beforehand. I wouldn't recommend this place for family trips or special occasions. The only positive aspect is the bath.

    Old and poorly maintained Ryokan with outdated facilities.

    The shower toilet was not maintained, with feces left on the nozzle. The balcony railing was severely rusted. The heating relied on an air conditioner, but the machine seemed old and made loud noises. Overall, it was a poorly maintained and rundown Ryokan. The meals were decent for the price, which is unfortunate. This Ryokan does not meet the standards to be recommended on IKYU.com.

    Showa Retro

    The building and facility are old, giving the feel of a nostalgic Showa-era hotel. The floor in the passageway of the bath's changing room felt a bit unsafe. Throughout the hallways and various areas inside, there were paintings by Takehisa Yumeji, along with many Japanese dolls on display. The meals were delicious; while some mentioned that portions were small, I found them just right, and breakfast was even plentiful. Since I had a Multiple Night Stay, I thought the menu might be repetitive, but it was different each day and kept things interesting. The staff provided polite service, and I especially appreciated how courteous the foreign staff members were. Additionally, there were many koi fish in the courtyard pond where you could feed them—it was quite enjoyable! The view of Kinugawa from the courtyard was also beautiful. While its location wasn't very convenient for visiting Nikko Toshogu Shrine, this added to my travel experience in an enjoyable way. Overall, I was very satisfied with my stay!

    Ideal for family trips

    Stayed in a room with a long-awaited open-air bath. The building seemed old, but it was well-cleaned. As mentioned in other reviews, the interior featured many Yumeji World and doll displays. Although I wasn’t initially interested, I found myself captivated by them. The meals were kaiseki cuisine served in a private room, allowing us to dine peacefully. The portions were just right for us as a couple in our 50s. Being surrounded by nature, there were plenty of insects around; we even encountered a large centipede-like bug inside the room, which startled us. It might be tough for those who are not fond of bugs. The view from the open-air bath in the room was breathtaking—overlooking Kinugawa River and autumn foliage! I would love to stay here again. However, some aspects were disappointing. While it’s understandable that the facility is old, broken parts should be repaired. For instance, there was a door attached to the open-air bath (presumably for privacy from other hotels), but it wouldn’t close properly and kept opening unless held shut manually; we had to use a chair to keep it closed while bathing. Additionally, water in the toilet kept running slightly without stopping—not an issue for use but concerning regarding water bills!

    The Onsen in the room was excellent.

    Stayed for 2 nights and 3 days. It was my first visit to Kinugawa Onsen in about 10 years. Surprised by the number of abandoned buildings. Walked from Kinugawa-Koen Station on the way there, and was kindly driven to Kinugawa-Onsen Station on the way back. A "Flower Accommodation" or perhaps a "Doll Accommodation." Chose a room with an open-air bath and Japanese garden. Approximately 25,000 yen per person per night, stayed as a pair. Received the key at the front desk and rolled my suitcase to the room myself. The open-air bath was in the garden. The shower was near the entrance with an old bathtub—didn't have the courage to use it. The toilet was Western-style but outdated. Sleeping on one futon hurt my back, so I requested two futons for the second night; however, it wasn't communicated properly at first, so I had to call again. Quite retro—a nostalgic Showa-era vibe that felt like time travel. Meals were served in private rooms; however, our private room for two felt cramped with voices from neighboring rooms clearly audible—very claustrophobic atmosphere. Meal content wasn’t luxurious or made with high-end ingredients but showed creativity. The open-air bath in our room was absolutely wonderful!

    It was excellent.

    Due to an air conditioning issue, my Room was upgraded, allowing me to relax in a wonderful Room with a great view. While the building's aging is noticeable, it adds charm, and the open-air bath provided a serene experience with the sound of the river. The meals were mentioned as small by some, but they were just right for me. Thank you very much!

    A Nostalgic and Welcoming Accommodation

    The building is slightly old, but the room was meticulously cleaned, very comfortable, and you could hear the sound of the river, allowing for a quiet and relaxing stay. The smiles of the welcoming staff were also very soothing. Meals were served in a private room where we could enjoy them at our own pace. The Japanese spoken by the foreign staff member attending to us was so polite that even modern Japanese people might struggle to speak that way—it was impressive! They humbly said they still had more to learn. The open-air bath in the room had an abundant supply of hot water, and we used it multiple times. This accommodation evokes the charm of traditional ryokan from days gone by, making it a place I would love to stay at again.

    A memorable and excellent accommodation.

    We chose this accommodation for a relaxing stay in a tranquil atmosphere, located one station beyond Onsen Station in Kinugawa. Having visited over 15 years ago, we were drawn back by the wonderful open-air bath near Kinugawa. The collection themed around Takehisa Yumeji and the well-maintained facilities impressed us once again. While the staff seemed quite busy at times and some facilities felt slightly aged, it was evident that great care is taken to maintain everything necessary. The effort put into preserving the doll collection was also appreciated. The meals offered excellent value for money. The Takehisa Yumeji collection and the breathtaking onsen views are treasures we hope will remain intact for years to come. We truly enjoyed a relaxing stay here—thank you very much!

    Open-air bath with a view of the mountain stream

    The outdoor hot spring had a pleasantly mild temperature, perfect for those who are not fond of overly hot water. With some extra time, I stepped outside and gently patted the heads of the koi fish in the pond; they eagerly swam up with open mouths, expecting food. Later, I carefully descended the stairs to the streamside and dipped my hand into the flowing water—it still carried a hint of summer warmth. During dinner, I was attended by kind staff from Nepal. When asked if they were Indian or Pakistani, they replied in French that they were Nepali but mentioned that they understood English better than French. The next morning, I took a local train at 9:20 AM to head straight home. Traveling solo as always, it was a peaceful and rejuvenating experience.

    Established Inn

    The Onsen I had always wanted to visit, Kinugawa Onsen. I chose a Ryokan somewhat randomly, wondering what made it special. It seems to be an established place, though the Facility is quite old. The garden was absolutely beautiful, with moss-covered rocks, trees, and the Kinugawa River adding charm. After the rain, the greenery looked even more vibrant. There was only one bath available, which included a sauna and an open-air bath. The atmosphere of the open-air bath was lovely, surrounded by trees and accompanied by the soothing sound of the Kinugawa River.

    The room has a strong musty smell.

    Damp and musty smell everywhere, not the scent of Onsen. Both the Room and hallway reeked of old mold. As mentioned in other Reviews, the glass cases displaying dolls were filled with dust, dead insects, and cobwebs. It's a noticeable spot—how can the staff not care? It seems there is no intention to improve despite reading guest Reviews. It's surprising that this Accommodation is even listed on IKYU.com.

    Great value for money!

    The front desk service varied depending on the staff, and there were some instances where information was not provided, such as needing to reserve the morning bus, which was a bit disappointing. However, overall, I was very satisfied. It seems that various efforts have been made since the nearest station is not Kinugawa Onsen Station, and I could see those efforts clearly. The Japanese-Western style room was very clean and spacious, which I appreciated. I would love to visit again!

    It was a Ryokan with the charm of the nostalgic bubble era.

    We stayed here for a short trip to celebrate my partner's birthday. The room was 10 tatami mats in size, located on the 5th floor, and as described in the plan, it offered a stunning view of Kinugawa below. We had a very relaxing time, and my partner also mentioned feeling completely at ease. The guest room had separate spaces for the bath, toilet, and sink, which made it very convenient to use. Due to the surrounding nature, there were some insects around the open-air bath and in the room; this might be something to consider if you are sensitive about such things. The meals were particularly delicious. Even for those with smaller appetites or who have eaten beforehand, I think you'll find that there's plenty of food provided—it might leave you feeling quite full! As it's kaiseki cuisine, you can enjoy delicate flavors from carefully selected ingredients. I initially planned to take a stroll through the courtyard after dinner but ended up taking a nap instead because I was so full. It's just a 3-minute walk from Kinugawa-Koen Station and also enjoyable to take a 30-minute walk from Kinugawa-Onsen Station while passing by abandoned hotels that reflect traces of Japan's bubble era (though please be cautious during this hot season!). Personally, what I liked most was "Haikara-san," an evening lounge with karaoke and bar services. You can either sing on stage or bring karaoke equipment back to your seat while enjoying an atmosphere reminiscent of Showa-era clubs. It was wonderful sipping drinks leisurely while listening to other guests' singing voices. Since we traveled from afar for this occasion, I ordered a cake for my partner via Cake.jp addressed directly to Hana no Yado Matsuya (they have partnered services). The staff kindly prepared everything after corresponding via email beforehand—thank you so much! Despite being during August's summer vacation season, it was very reasonably priced. The retro atmosphere reminiscent of Japan’s bubble era is something unique that can only be experienced here. Thank you for your hospitality!

    A Hotel with a Showa Era Atmosphere

    The building shows its age but remains within an acceptable range. This is a valuable accommodation where you can feel the charm of Showa retro throughout. The Onsen, both indoor and open-air, is very pleasant, and the dinner was excellent in both taste and portion! Additionally, the foreign staff who served us were very friendly. Please continue your great work and keep running this wonderful place!

    The room with an open-air Onsen was excellent.

    It was great that my elderly mother could enjoy the onsen without having to leave the room. However, it was inconvenient not to have a towel rack for small towels. Apart from some dust in the room's toilet, everything else was good. Dinner portions were just right. Considering it's a ryokan by the river, I wondered why no river fish was served. Breakfast was more luxurious, and my mother was very satisfied with it. The foreign staff at the front desk were very friendly and charming, but their farewell upon departure felt a bit abrupt. A proper send-off might make guests want to return again!
