    Secluded Onsen

As a truly secluded Onsen, the drive to get there was challenging, but it was a wonderful Accommodation well worth the effort. Surrounded by abundant nature, even the wait for the cable car was enjoyable as we took in the gorge views and watched small birds. We also used the private bath first thing in the morning and were able to fully enjoy the Onsen while embraced by quiet nature—it was truly an exceptional moment. All of your staff are wonderfully international, and rather than striving for perfection, each person’s sincere, heartfelt work came through, which made us feel very warm inside. At dinner, you kindly changed our table to a window seat, and we enjoyed delicious dishes along with the beautiful scenery. My European husband was also very satisfied. Next time, we would love to return during the autumn foliage or snowy season. Thank you very much for a lovely stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed the secluded hot spring.

I was finally able to stay at Iya Onsen, which I had long dreamed of visiting. After sightseeing at Oboke Gorge and the Kazurabashi Vine Bridge and traveling along narrow mountain roads, we arrived at a truly charming Accommodation. Taking the cable car down to the open-air bath at the bottom of a deep V-shaped valley was a one-of-a-kind experience. While listening to the river and admiring the greenery, I was able to soak slowly in the pleasantly warm water. The indoor bath in the building also had wonderful views and excellent water. We also thoroughly enjoyed the creative, thoughtfully prepared dishes. The hospitality of all the staff was outstanding. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us. Next time, I would love to visit during the autumn foliage season.

Many of the guests were Chinese tour groups, and many didn’t seem to know proper bath etiquette.

The bath temperature, the baths themselves, and the cable car were excellent. The food—Japanese-style French cuisine—was also flawless. However, a large group of guests (apparently Chinese/Hong Kong) were very noisy and did not seem to understand proper bathing etiquette. They used the hot spring source outlet like a waterfall shower, washed their hair there, and some even directed the spring water at their groin. Some even exercised naked in the bathtub—it was quite something. The hot spring water itself was outstanding and the temperature was perfect, so I wanted to relax, but because people were washing their hair and groin and dirtying the source water, I felt uncomfortable and left quickly. It was truly disappointing. I probably won’t go again. The road is extremely remote. A Mercedes C-Class is about the limit; a small kei car might be better. It was such a waste of an Accommodation.

It was a wonderful trip where we were able to fully enjoy nature.

At the time of our Reservation, this was the only Room available, so it was a bit disappointing that we couldn’t fully open the curtains (as the parking lot and road are visible). However, the Room was very clean and well maintained, and we had a very comfortable stay. The meal also included river fish—something we don’t usually eat—served grilled on skewers, and it was delicious.

    The Ultimate Relaxation

The open-air bath reached by cable car was something I’d always wanted to try. The slope was steeper than expected—thrilling and exciting. The open-air bath has pleasantly lukewarm water, so you can soak at length. Surrounded by greenery and listening to the river, I could forget everyday life and truly relax. The meals were also excellent, featuring local ingredients in regional dishes and creative cuisine—refreshingly different from other Accommodations. If I had to mention one thing, I wish the in-Room open-air bath were a bit larger. But overall, I’m extremely satisfied.

Open-Air Hot Spring Bath Accessible by Cable Car

The open-air bath accessed by cable car was amazing! During our 1-night, 2-day stay, we went three times. Each time, you have to wait a few minutes to ride the cable car, so plan your time accordingly. When we used the panoramic bath around 10:00 PM, several foreign staff members were also bathing. That itself was fine, but they were chatting loudly in their native language, so it was hard to relax in the bath. There is no elevator in the Ryokan. Also, the cable-car open-air bath requires going up and down stairs equivalent to about two floors. At the very least, I think an elevator inside the building would be helpful. Many guests likely arrive by private car, but please be careful as you will need to drive on narrow mountain roads. In some sections where passing oncoming cars is difficult due to the road width, we ended up driving while hoping no oncoming traffic would appear.

A welcoming Accommodation that offers the comfort of a favorite stay and the excitement of a first-time visit.

This was my first stay, and from the warm welcome with smiling faces to checkout, I was able to relax and truly enjoy myself. The explanations about using the baths and restaurant were clear, and any questions or requests I had were answered in an easy-to-understand way. The view from the Room was exactly what I had hoped for—wonderful. The Onsen was also excellent. Before soaking in each bath, I felt excited watching the scenery change moment by moment. The water temperature was never too hot, so I could enjoy it at my own pace. The food was even better than expected. I enjoyed every dish while admiring how the ingredients were brought out and combined so beautifully. Throughout my stay, I could sense a commitment to refining ideas into something even more complete in many small details. Thanks to that, even though it was my first time staying here, I felt as relaxed as if I had visited many times before. It turned into a wonderful Onsen trip.

    The open-air Onsen r...

The open-air Onsen reached by cable car was unforgettable; soaking leisurely in the lukewarm water warmed me through and made for a truly one-of-a-kind Onsen experience. The panoramic bath in the Room was also wonderful, but it was a little disappointing that the building’s framework could be seen on the right. The meals and service were excellent, and I can only imagine how stunning it must be during the autumn foliage season.

A hidden gem beyond your imagination—prepare to be amazed!

I was amazed that a building could even be constructed on such a remote cliff. When I entered the Room, I was stunned by the breathtaking view straight ahead, looking down over the V-shaped valley. It was the most secluded location of any Accommodation I’ve ever stayed at—until I got used to it, I was almost afraid to go near the edge of the Room. The cable car to the open-air bath was an exhilarating experience, even compared with remote destinations overseas! The water is a unique natural hot spring source with bubbles and a distinct sulfur scent found only here. Despite being in such an isolated place, I was surprised again by the modern renovated Room, beautifully presented and delicious cuisine served on carefully crafted tableware, and attentive service with nothing lacking or excessive. It truly felt like travel—an Accommodation experience that far exceeded my expectations. I would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    It was very relaxing.

The fresh greenery was very soothing. There was only a shower booth, but it was enough since we used the Onsen. The shampoo and other amenities were L’OCCITANE. The Room had just been renovated and was truly spotless—it really lifted my mood. Thank you as well for the drinks in the refrigerator. There are many stairs, so it may be difficult for guests with limited mobility.

A Birthday Trip for Mother and Daughter

I stayed here 10 years ago, and this time I made a Reservation at my daughter’s request. As it was a gift trip, we chose a Room with an open-air Onsen bath. The Room was very nice, but the in-room amenities and equipment (such as the hair dryer) felt underwhelming for the price. I usually always book a Room with an open-air bath, and lately most places provide higher-grade items. Also, I would have appreciated being told in advance that we needed to fill the bath ourselves. It was also disappointing that the water cooled down unless we replaced it each time. As for the meals, since the appetizers were already set out, I couldn’t help wondering if they were cold. My daughter and I looked at each other and thought, “Is this just shredded cabbage?” for the side vegetables as well. This is not a budget price point, so I hope there will be some improvements. The food was the most disappointing part. At this price, there are many Accommodations offering higher-quality service and content. Sorry for the long message. The Onsen and the Room were very good. Thank you for a pleasant trip.

The facilities are excellent, but please note some points during your journey.

The room was clean, and the autumn-colored mountains could be seen from various spots. However, the mattress near the entrance of the room we stayed in made squeaking noises, causing my companion to have a sleepless night. It might be better to replace or repair this mattress. The onsen located beyond the ropeway had excellent water quality and stunning views. The lower temperature allowed for longer bathing times, which was enjoyable. For future guests, please note that on our way to arrive at the accommodation around 3 PM (near Hinoji Valley, about 3 minutes by car from the accommodation), we were stopped for 50 minutes due to rockfall prevention construction. There was no prior warning from the accommodation or notifications from local authorities or contractors; it seems these works start suddenly without notice. Even if there is no announcement on their website, it would be advisable to check past notices regarding road closures due to construction and adjust your travel time accordingly. The road is narrow and taking an alternative route in reverse direction takes more time; therefore, detours are not recommended. During this incident, I called the accommodation while being stopped but received no particular support or action at reception afterward, which was disappointing. It seems even their shuttle service vehicle was affected by this stoppage. This issue should ideally be addressed with Tokushima Prefecture or construction contractors as well. This experience also highlighted how challenging it can be to visit such remote areas.

    Issues with customer service

The foreign staff at the dining area provided attentive and polite service. However, the service in other areas left something to be desired. We had to take care of our own slippers and shoes upon entering the room. Even when carrying luggage, staff standing in the hallway did not offer assistance. While breakfast was delicious, dinner did not seem worth the price charged.

    Blissful Moments

I learned about this accommodation from the Nikkei newspaper and had always wanted to stay here. I was lucky to get a spot on the cancellation list. The natural onsen with free-flowing spring water, accessed by cable car, has pleasantly warm water that you can soak in for hours. It was truly a blissful experience. The renovated room was thoughtfully designed and very user-friendly, and I was especially impressed by the spacious washbasin area. Every dish made with fresh ingredients was delicious, with the simmered dishes being particularly exceptional. This hidden gem of an accommodation is one I would love to visit again while I'm still fit enough to manage the stairs!

Enjoy a hidden hot spring amidst breathtaking nature!

The view from the Room was wonderful, but the private open-air bath attached to the Room was absolutely amazing. The hidden hot spring open-air bath accessible by cable car is also a must-see and worth experiencing, but even more so, the feeling of being surrounded by greenery in the Room allowed me to truly relax. The meals were deliciously seasoned, making use of local specialties, and I was satisfied with every dish. Additionally, I am grateful for all the staff's thoughtfulness and their dedicated efforts to provide heartfelt hospitality. It feels like such a place offers a one-of-a-kind scenery that probably cannot be found anywhere else in Japan. Next time, I will visit again with my sister.

    I would definitely visit again.

We stayed at this accommodation in April. It is a very popular accommodation, and it was difficult to secure a reservation, but we were lucky to reserve on a day when there was an unexpected vacancy. Many of the guests were international, giving the accommodation a cosmopolitan atmosphere. The most memorable experience at this accommodation was taking the ropeway to the open-air bath in the valley. Soaking in an onsen surrounded by stunning mountain scenery was truly special. Because of this open-air bath and its amazing natural location, we definitely want to visit again.

In the season of fresh greenery...

It was a very pleasant and enriching experience. The hospitality, Onsen, and even the meals were truly satisfying. Although my memory is vague, it seems the atmosphere has changed quite a bit since I visited with my parents about 30 years ago. I could feel the effort put into maintaining and improving the Facility. As for my ratings: - Hospitality/Service: "4" because I wanted to send souvenirs but there were no courier labels available, so I deducted one point. - Onsen/Bath: "4" because I noticed some foreign guests seemed unsure about how to use the bath properly; perhaps adding instructions or illustrations somewhere would be helpful. Overall, however, it was an excellent stay deserving of a "5." Thank you to the staff who braved the cold weather to see us off outside—it was much appreciated! I look forward to visiting again during spring when everything is lush and green.

I was completely soothed by the beauty of Iya Valley!

We were concerned about the snow as we traveled by private car in midwinter, but thanks to the prior explanation of road conditions, winter tires were sufficient. The open-air onsen along the mountain stream was said to have lukewarm water, but it allowed us to enjoy a long soak, which was great. The view of the snowy landscape made for a luxurious moment that can only be experienced during this season. We are considering visiting again in summer or autumn. Both dinner and breakfast were very delicious. We felt sorry for leaving some food uneaten as we couldn't finish everything. Our room was on the 5th floor while the panoramic bath was on the 2nd floor, making movement a bit challenging; hence, we rated facilities with 4 stars. Additionally, if there could be an indicator showing where the cable car is from inside the bath area, it would help us use it more conveniently at just the right time. Other than that, everything else was highly satisfying! The open-air bath attached to our room also had an amazing view and felt wonderful. We ended up using each bath twice! The panoramic bath being available 24 hours allowed us to enjoy it without worrying about time. One of my colleagues who joined me is a chef and was amazed by how incredible the pork used in meals tasted! Despite having fat content, it felt light with a hint of sweetness—he said it’s absolutely top-notch meat! It didn’t leave any greasy aftertaste like back fat does—it reset your palate no matter how much you ate—and I ended up overeating because of that too! Local ingredients were abundantly used; especially memorable was grilled salt-seasoned amego fish—it tasted so good I ate every part including its head! There wasn’t any typical river fish smell at all; instead offered unique flavors distinct from ayu fish (sweetfish). The quality of beds ensured excellent sleep—I overslept slightly and arrived late for breakfast though! I would love another visit here someday despite its popularity making reservations hard to secure—but I'll keep trying my best to complete another reservation soon!

    Spectacular Onsen

I arrived about 30 minutes earlier than the check-in time, but I was immediately shown to my room. The open-air onsen accessible by cable car is interesting. The view of the valley is nice, and since the temperature of the onsen is low, you can stay in as long as you like. The bath in the room was a pattern where you adjust it with onsen water and water that you fill and heat yourself. The bathtub is stylish, but I thought it might be a bit difficult to get in. Also, despite the room being recently renovated, the bed on the door side creaked every time I turned over, and I couldn't sleep well. Since this property is popular with well-built foreign guests, perhaps someone heavy caused the damage? (sweat) I think it should be checked. I enjoyed the meals both in the morning and evening. The hospitality of all the staff was also good. This year, the autumn leaves were late, so I couldn't fully enjoy the autumn foliage of the Iya Valley, but the view was spectacular. I hope to visit again when the autumn leaves are at their peak next time. Thank you very much.

The onsen in the valley is the best!

It truly feels like a hidden Onsen, and the atmosphere is amazing! The food, especially the salt-grilled amego and Awa beef, was delicious. The service was attentive, allowing us to relax and unwind. Thank you very much. The only disappointing thing was that the Room's window glass was dirty. The windows in the Onsen inside the building weren't cleaned much either. It's a shame to view the beautiful gorge through dirty window glass. I understand that it's tough to clean the outside of the window glass every time it rains, and there might be a lack of manpower, but I think the Hotels I've stayed at before, which had large windows to view the scenery, had sparkling clean window glass. I even wondered how they managed to clean them.

It was a wonderful property with quality onsen and scenery that healed us!

Last time, I couldn't stay because it was fully booked, so I was determined to stay this time. It was a wonderful Stays that did not disappoint. The Room was a spacious and bright room with a scenic bath, called Tenrai (Tenrai), overlooking the valley. It was a very clean Room. The water in the Room is apparently heated, but of course, it's Onsen. After climbing Mt. Tsurugi and Jirogyu, the Onsen in the Room, which I could enter anytime, was very soothing for my tired body. (It's understandable that there are insects since it's deep in the mountains.) The diamond privilege was as splendid as a small souvenir. The open-air bath you reach by cable car is a smooth and lukewarm open-air bath, so you can relax while watching the river flow and the scenery. It takes time for the cable car to arrive, but you can observe wild birds that come to play, and it's a photogenic place, so you won't get bored. The view from the large public bath is also refreshing, with greenery overflowing right in front of you through the large open-air windows. I was surprised to see so many foreigners in such a remote mountain area. It's popular among foreigners too! There is no elevator, so it might be tough for the elderly. Hinomiji Valley is a perfect spot for a drive, and Shonben Kozo is just right for a morning walk. If I have the chance to visit again, I would definitely like to revisit this Property.

    It's a hidden hot spring.

I visited by private car, and for those driving, be prepared for a road befitting a hidden hot spring. I was lucky to pass about three cars at places where passing was possible. The highlight of this inn is probably the hot spring accessible by cable car, with a slope that feels a bit terrifying. The bath temperature is on the lower side, allowing for a long soak. I was able to enjoy the bath while feeling close to nature. The meals were generally mild in flavor, and even when I asked questions about the dishes, the explanations were given politely, making the dining experience enjoyable. There was a trouble with the hot water in the room's bath, but it was promptly addressed, making it a memorable part of the trip. Was it mosquitoes? I got bitten about three times, but this is also a sign of a hidden hot spring. It's definitely an inn that leaves a lasting impression. It's not a place I can visit easily, but if I have the chance, I'd like to visit again with insect bite medicine in hand. I had a great trip. Thank you very much.
