    Quiet Nights

The pond spread out in front of the Accommodation, and the view from our Room was wonderful. It was also great to enjoy our meal while watching the sunset from the dining area. As an IKYU Reservation perk, we received an extra simmered golden eye snapper dish, which we didn’t know about—an unexpectedly delightful surprise. Every dish was delicious, and having sushi prepared right in front of us felt truly special. The senior staff at mealtime were very courteous, making it a pleasure to dine. All the other staff were also kind, and it was a very enjoyable stay.

    A Long-Awaited Family Reunion

After visiting our family grave, we chose this place to enjoy a relaxing Onsen trip together as a family once a year. We made a Reservation for an affordable Plan, but it was more than satisfying and we were able to spend a calm Obon holiday. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent. In particular, we loved the sushi at dinner—hand-formed right in front of us and enjoyed while chatting with the chef.

    The best one-night stay!

This time, our large family of eight stayed to celebrate my husband’s 60th birthday. Our Room was upgraded, the meals were delicious, and the staff were incredibly friendly—we truly enjoyed our one-night stay. Finally, the view from the Room was amazing.

An accommodation where you can enjoy the views, meals, and Onsen to your satisfaction.

Having just retired, I visited for the first time with my wife. At check-in, we were asked about our preferred dinner drinks and any additional dishes. We were told this was to avoid keeping us waiting at dinner. We were escorted only as far as the first-floor elevator, with no in-room explanation. It felt somewhat businesslike, but it also created a comfortable sense of distance. Our Room had a semi-open-air bath, but since there were few guests right after check-in, we used the public bath instead. Both the changing area and bathing area were spotless and well maintained. There was a notice warning about steps in the tub. I assumed there were two steps and entered carefully, but it turned out there were three—I slipped inside the tub and ended up going under headfirst (laughs). The semi-open-air bath in the Room was pleasantly air-conditioned, making for a very comfortable soak; we enjoyed it about five times before checkout the next day. For dinner, we were seated by the water with a view of the sunset, and enjoyed both the scenery and our meal. Since we chose a basic Plan, we didn’t expect too much; however, true to its reputation as a “gourmet Accommodation,” every dish exceeded expectations—in flavor and presentation alike—and both my wife and I were impressed. The hamo fish dumpling soup was especially outstanding. In addition, as an IKYU Diamond member benefit, we were served simmered golden eye snapper; it was generous in size and very satisfying. Because I mentioned at check-in that this stay was to celebrate my retirement, they presented us early in dinner with an entire sea bream dish (“Celebration Sea Bream Three-Color Grill”), which we truly appreciated—and we even took memorable photos. As an aside, the tsukudani served alongside it was so delicious that I looked for it in the shop after dinner hoping to buy some, but they didn’t carry it—unfortunately. Breakfast offered many small side dishes along with delicious rice—I ended up having three bowls of rice. It was also nice that refills of not only rice but miso soup were available as well. I was surprised to see braised pork (perhaps kakuni?) in the morning, but paired with grilled mackerel it tasted excellent and went down easily. The Room we chose included an 11:00 checkout time, so after breakfast we brought complimentary lobby coffee back to our Room and relaxed at our own pace. The Room had been renovated not long ago and felt clean and refreshed—we were very satisfied. Next time, we’d like to try staying in a different Room. The parking lot is spacious and free of charge; being able to leave our car there while sightseeing nearby after checkout was also greatly appreciated. Overall, this stay exceeded our expectations from start to finish—we would definitely like to return again.

Enjoy delicious meals by Oshidori Pond.

I was able to relax and soak in the Onsen at a leisurely pace by the shore of Oshidori Pond. Even though I requested a stay at 10:00 on the day, thank you for preparing dinner and upgrading my Room. The open view from the Room was wonderful, and dinner featured thoughtful touches such as green agar jelly inspired by Oshidori Pond, a warmed ayu dish, and chilled vegetables served on ice. The rice course was also elaborately presented, with sushi hand-rolled right in front of us by a skilled chef. For breakfast, we had lakeside seating with a great view of the spacious Oshidori Pond.

Lakeside Accommodation (it’s actually a pond)

This Accommodation truly reminded me what a lakeside stay should be. It stands right by the lake, and the view from the Room windows is genuinely beautiful—just looking at it is soothing. Since this is Unzen Onsen, I debated whether to stay closer to Hell Valley, but choosing this place was absolutely the right decision. It’s nearly a 10-minute walk to Hell Valley, but when we were about to head out, a staff member kindly said, “If you’d like, we can drive you.” They even took us all the way to the far end of Hell Valley, so on the way back we could stroll back in order while taking in the sights—and the distance didn’t bother us at all. I was impressed by such thoughtful hospitality. Also, since the sulfur smell around Hell Valley is quite strong, I think it worked out well not to stay too close. We booked a standard Plan for our Room, but it came with a 12.5-tatami Japanese-style room plus an additional 3-tatami anteroom—much more spacious than expected. Combined with the view from the window, it made for a wonderfully relaxing stay. The Onsen is free-flowing from its source and feels silky on the skin—excellent quality water. The sulfur scent wasn’t too noticeable; it felt soft and left a great impression overall. That said, because the open-air bath uses pure source water as-is, the temperature seems to vary by day; when I went in, it was a bit hot. It wasn’t ideal for lingering in lukewarm water—but that’s probably part of what makes true free-flowing spring water special. Dinner included fun presentations as well—such as one dish served in an ice bowl and sushi shaped right in front of us—which made it visually enjoyable too. Younger guests would likely be especially delighted by these touches. For our generation it may have been slightly more elaborate than necessary, but there was nothing to fault in terms of quality—we were thoroughly satisfied. All of the staff were great conversationalists, and many seemed to have worked there for years. We also heard that His Majesty stayed here back when he was Crown Prince; throughout our stay we could feel this Accommodation’s long-standing tradition and sense of prestige in many details.

    Relaxing Accommodation

A truly relaxing Accommodation surrounded by the quiet of nature—lake views, lush green mountains, and birdsong!! I thoroughly enjoyed the Onsen again for the first time in a while, with a free-flowing bath fed directly from the source without added water. Next time, I’ll visit during the autumn foliage season.

    Unzen is the best!

We had a wonderful time! From the warm welcome and lovely atmosphere to the relaxing Room, everything was great. For the Onsen, you bring the bath towel from your Room, but face towels are provided at the Onsen area, which was very convenient. And the dining presentation... I’ll keep it a secret! I visited with my father, and there were also younger guests—perhaps friends traveling together or on a company trip. Guests of all ages seemed to be enjoying themselves. A highly recommended Accommodation! We would love to visit again. Thank you very much for your hospitality!

This is the place to stay in Unzen!

This was my second stay, following my visit last August. Even as Unzen has gradually become quieter compared to when I was a child, this Accommodation is working incredibly hard. I’ve visited many Onsen areas across Japan, and this is one of the Accommodations I’d happily return to again and again. First of all, the food here is outstanding. Dinner features a clear theme for each dish, using local vegetables, fish, and meat—delicious and beautifully presented. This time in particular, the yamame spring roll far exceeded my expectations and truly impressed me! Breakfast also focuses on local production for local consumption, offering a delicious Japanese set meal made with local vegetables and eggs. The Onsen doesn’t rely on elaborate rock or cypress baths, but the water quality is excellent. This time we visited during the fresh green season, and the view from the open-air bath was especially beautiful. I also appreciated that all showerheads in the women’s bath are ReFa—it adds a nice touch of luxury. The Room and Facility may not be brand-new, but everything is carefully maintained. It has the calm comfort of a classic Japanese Ryokan—quiet and relaxing. Room amenities are basic only; however, for me what truly matters (the Onsen, the Room, cleanliness, and all staff) is excellent here, so simple amenities are more than enough (I prefer bringing my own favorites anyway). I’d love to stay again next time I visit Unzen. Thank you very much!

    Looking forward to what’s ahead.

While it can be challenging to respond to earthquakes, COVID-19, and the rapid increase in inbound tourism, it seemed that this traditional and relatively large Japanese-style Ryokan (Hotel) is being renovated little by little. This was my first stay, and I used a Room with an open-air bath that appeared to have already been renovated. Since the bathtub and shower are on the opposite side of the Room, it was a bit inconvenient. Also, perhaps due to the older construction, I noticed footsteps from the floor above at night. On the other hand, the meals were excellent, and I was truly impressed by the young staff member’s broad knowledge, careful explanations, and attentive service. For breakfast, we were fortunate to have good weather and were given a quiet seat facing the lake, which left a lasting impression. It was a Hotel where young people are thriving and one I look forward to seeing in the future, so I would like to stay again. Thank you very much.

    I was very satisfied.

We had a very pleasant final day of our week-long trip. The Room is old, but very spacious and thoroughly cleaned. The meals were carefully prepared and beautifully presented. The portions were modest, but the quality was high and everything was delicious. Above all, the service from the woman in charge of our table was truly professional and made us feel very comfortable. The bath was also spacious, and we were able to relax and enjoy having it all to ourselves.

A bath and Room with a lovely view of Oshidori Pond.

The Oshidori Pond spreads out in front of the Accommodation, and the views from the open-air bath and the Room were wonderful. The dining area was also nicely divided with stylish partitions at each table, so it was comfortable to dine alone without feeling self-conscious. In addition, as a perk of an IKYU Reservation, an extra simmered golden eye snapper dish was included—something I hadn’t expected—so it was a pleasant surprise. Every other dish was delicious as well, and having sushi prepared right in front of me added a special touch. All of the staff were courteous and attentive, making this a truly enjoyable stay. I’d love to visit again on a day with better weather.

    A Painting by Kaii

After strolling around Unzen Jigoku with my wife, we headed to Toen. We stayed in a Room called “Riyui.” It faces Oshidori Pond, and since we arrived at 3:00 p.m., we soaked in the open-air bath while casually gazing out over the pond from the Room. As time passed and it began to get slightly dark, I happened to look at the pond and saw the mountains behind us reflected on the surface of the water—it felt like a painting by Kaii Higashiyama. I kept looking again and again until nightfall, so moving that I almost expected a white horse to appear. I had assumed the Onsen would be similar because Unzen is known for its milky-white waters, but when I asked, I learned that Unzen has multiple layers of hot spring sources, and Toen’s Onsen is rich in iron. It was very gentle on the skin, and my wife was delighted. The in-Room amenities were thoughtfully arranged as well. The shampoo, treatment conditioner, body soap, etc. were single-use items, and even the hair dryer was a modern model—so we didn’t feel inconvenienced at all. Next is dining: this time dinner was served in our Room, and eating while looking out over the pond felt wonderful. The meal began with appetizers, but even those alone were filling; after that came Unzen Akaushi beef—exceptionally tender with very little fat. What made us especially happy was an extra dish not listed on the menu as part of a special perk: simmered golden eye snapper (Kinmedai). We were truly moved by this unexpected treat. The seasoning had gentle flavors with just enough accent to stand out—we could really feel the chef’s skill. Breakfast was served in the dining area, but it was also arranged so we could enjoy views of Oshidori Pond while eating. A generous amount is served from early morning. Since dinner the previous day was sushi there wasn’t any rice served then; however breakfast did include rice—and when we ate it, it had such a wonderful aroma and just the right moisture content that it made us genuinely happy. Lastly, there are many souvenirs lined up in the shop—so many that you’ll have trouble choosing. And all of the staff were cheerful and welcoming; thanks to their pleasant service both our bodies and minds felt refreshed. We’d love to visit Unzen again and stay with Toen once more. Thank you very much.

    A very relaxing place

We stayed for a 3-night Multiple Night Stay. Both the meals and the Onsen were truly wonderful. We visited Hasami, Shimabara, and Saga, and it was conveniently located with good access to everywhere we went. I wondered if there were too few staff at the front desk—they seemed very busy. The elderly lady in charge at the dining area was very kind, and our children really took to her. However, an enormous moth got into our Room and it was very scary... At the end of our trip, we took a taxi to Nagasaki Airport. The driver said “25,000 yen is fine, right?” so we paid, but there was no meter and it made us uneasy. We would have felt more comfortable with a metered taxi arranged for us. Still, we had a great time and the Onsen was truly excellent. Thank you very much.

We visited to celebrate the New Year with our family. I had always heard of this famous ryokan, and it truly lived up to its reputation. The dinner was absolutely outstanding and beyond expectations. Among all the accommodations I've stayed at recently, this was undoubtedly No.1. I never imagined enjoying such fresh seafood in a mountain area like this. Everyone was delighted, and we were able to welcome the New Year happily. As a historic ryokan, it's understandable that the building and facilities are old, but it seems some rooms have been newly renovated. Next time, I would love to try staying in one of those updated rooms as well!

Keep up the great work, we're cheering for you!

This was our first family stay at the accommodation. At check-out, I shared some feedback about our stay with the front desk, and the staff listened attentively without any unpleasant reactions. I felt their genuine dedication to improving and striving to be an even better hotel, which is rare these days. We will continue to support you—please keep up the great work! We look forward to visiting again. Thank you very much!

    It was a good trip!

We stayed for three nights and four days. It was a very satisfying trip. When I informed them that my companion was not fond of raw fish, they kindly changed it to boiled or grilled fish, for which I am grateful. The only disappointment was that the large window glass in the indoor bath on the second floor was dirty. The wonderful view was diminished. When I mentioned it to the hotel staff, they said they would address it immediately! I also felt it would have been nice to have a deodorizing spray in the room's toilet and a disinfectant spray in the room. Please consider this. I will use your services again when I visit Shimabara.
