    Exceeding Expectations

    The guest room, hospitality and service, Onsen, Facility, and meals—everything far exceeded my expectations, and I was amazed at how satisfied I was. The atmosphere of the bath and the water were especially wonderful; I wanted to stay in forever. The food was also outstanding, and my wife was delighted. We also enjoyed playing table tennis, and thanks to the light exercise and the Onsen, we slept soundly at night—better than at home. We will definitely return together. Thank you very much to everyone at the Accommodation.

    The Ryokan you’ve been looking forward to.

    I heard that Daimaru Besso has been reborn. It was impressive to see that the historic elements have been preserved while areas needing improvement have been properly upgraded. Compared with Kyoto-style kaiseki, the dishes looked simple, but I was very satisfied with the delicious local cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients. The staff we passed in the hallways greeted us with smiles—this was wonderful. The Room is old, but it was well cleaned and there were no issues. What was disappointing was the front desk. When we arrived, they didn’t even look at me as I got out of the taxi first, and instead said “Welcome” to my daughters who got out afterward—how is that acceptable? And on departure, although they called a taxi for us, when I turned around to say thank you before getting in, they had already disappeared into the back of the building. At other Ryokan, staff see guests off until the car is out of sight... Are the front desk staff just part-time workers? I would like them to be retrained.

    It was a memorable stay.

    I stayed here while visiting home from Tokyo, also to celebrate my mother’s birthday. I consulted with the staff in advance about celebrating my 84-year-old mother, and on the day you kindly prepared a signboard at the dining area, special dishes, and even a cake—thank you very much. My mother was deeply moved and teared up, saying it would be “a keepsake for the afterlife,” and the surprise was a great success. I had already known how wonderful the Onsen water quality is, and since it’s easy to reach from my family home and has convenient access from the airport as well, I’d love to stay again. We were also lucky enough to see fireflies unexpectedly, making it a memorable stay for both of us. Thank you for taking such good care of us.

    It was a quiet and luxurious stay.

    Strolling leisurely through the garden, soaking in the Onsen, savoring delicious cuisine while reading the delightful menu descriptions, relaxing again in the quiet Onsen at night, and then resting slowly… it truly feels like a luxurious way to spend time. Items from His Majesty’s visit are on display, and if you take a closer look at the furnishings and bedding in your Room, as well as the tableware used for the meals, you’ll find many subtly beautiful pieces throughout. True to its name as a “villa,” this is an Accommodation you’ll want to return to again for a refreshing getaway.

    A huge hit after a long time! As expected from a long-established place—very satisfied.

    First, getting there: I took an express bus. The lonely staircase down from the highway made my heart race a bit, but the Accommodation was just a short walk away. On the way back, I chose the train since it’s easier to plan around. The station is a bit far, so I took a taxi. There were lots of traffic lights and it took longer than expected—1,500 yen. If I had to name one drawback, it would be that access by train isn’t great. Since this is an Accommodation where His Majesty the Emperor has stayed, it has a very prestigious atmosphere. Check-in was smooth. The staff’s demeanor was wonderful, and their kimono were beautiful. Service was refined, quick, and excellent. The Room was spacious, impeccably cleaned and spotless. The high ceilings made it very comfortable, and the in-room bath had a lovely hinoki cypress scent. It was the most reasonably priced option and I was completely satisfied. The tea sweets were delicious too. The amenities were surprisingly high quality across the board. Even the toothbrush had just the right softness and felt great to use—I brought my own but ended up using theirs. The futon provided firm point support with perfect firmness, and even the pillow was adjustable—flawless. Dinner was served in a private room with its own entrance like something you’d find at a traditional restaurant. We didn’t upgrade anything in particular; every dish was carefully prepared—not typical pre-made frozen kaiseki items you often see elsewhere. Everything was outstanding. The portions were just right for someone who enjoys drinking sake as well. The rice cooked in an earthenware pot was delicious both at dinner and breakfast—fully satisfying. The Onsen had both cooler and warmer areas so I could relax at length. It’s free-flowing from the source and overflowed generously—it felt amazing. I think I soaked 4 or 5 times. Overall, this is an exceptional Accommodation, and I would absolutely love to visit again.

    The bathroom was very clean.

    At night, we were able to see fireflies from our Room. My sons were delighted to see fireflies for the first time at their age. The meals were also very delicious. The paintings by Isson Tanaka were wonderful.

    I was able to relax and unwind.

    Every time I return to Fukuoka, I stay here, and the experience always exceeds my expectations. The cuisine is filled with a desire to let guests enjoy the sense of the season, along with a touch of playful creativity; the tableware and presentation are also wonderful. The historic-feeling Room and Onsen are very clean and truly relaxing. This time, I didn’t want to leave, so I changed my plan to head out a bit early in the morning and ended up staying until just before checkout. This is an Accommodation I’d wholeheartedly recommend for a leisurely stay!

    The reservation was made attracted by the onsen and architecture, and the historic building was well-maintained. Although there was no open-air bath, the onsen had ample water and a large bath with a temperature to my liking. For meals, I was guided to a private room where I could enjoy dining in a calm atmosphere. However, due to differences in food culture (such as adding vinegar to rice porridge), it wasn't completely satisfying but still had an elegant touch. The magnificent garden features impressive koi swimming around, along with old-style buildings from past eras, making it highly recommended for those interested in architecture.

    It was a pleasure to stay here again after a long time. My previous stay was before the well-known incident, and I had some concerns, but I was impressed by the thoughtful improvements made. Both the Onsen and the room were clean and comfortable. The meals have improved even further, with each dish carefully prepared, generous portions, and a charming use of traditional tableware that added to the experience. The limited-time nighttime bar service in the lobby space was delightful—offering drinks like Yamazaki and Yoichi at an incredible price in the 1,000-yen range! The hospitality from all staff members remained as warm and soothing as ever. Being close to Fukuoka City with access to Onsen and gourmet cuisine at this price point makes it highly satisfying overall. It left such a positive impression that I look forward to visiting again.     The Onsen large public bath is wonderful.

    Stayed alone for a business trip. The historical building was beautifully maintained, and the room was spacious and comfortable. The staff's hospitality was excellent, and I appreciated their thoughtful gestures, such as covering my half-finished glass with a lid while preparing the futon during dinner. The large public bath was truly stunning—the aroma of the onsen, the architecture, and the view from the window were all exceptional. Since it was a Monday stay, the meal felt slightly modest but still had playful touches like dishes resembling watermelon or draft beer. Enjoying it in an elegant private room made it perfect overall. Being close to Hakata, I would love to visit this ryokan again in another season. Thank you for your hospitality!

    Established 160 years ago!

    As always, the warm hospitality and comfortable atmosphere allowed me to relax in a wonderful bath! I was fortunate to visit Taishotei before its renovation during the public opening. While it is being opened prior to renovations due to aging, I look forward to staying at the renewed Taishotei, which will preserve its classic charm while incorporating modern elements.

    The meals were very disappointing. While the cleaning of the Room, bath, lounge, etc., was excellent, the smell changed drastically as soon as I got off the elevator and headed to the Room, which was very unfortunate.

    Used for my husband's birthday.

    The meals and Onsen were both satisfying with great attention to detail. We also enjoyed playing table tennis and ring toss. Additionally, we were very grateful to borrow small items like nail clippers and pens. I was informed by the staff that there is no washing machine, so I will be careful when planning a Multiple Night Stay.

    Traditional Ryokan

    It has been a while since we last stayed here, and everyone was kind. We were satisfied with everything, including the Onsen and meals. Thanks to you, it was an enjoyable trip.

    I felt nostalgic.

    I stayed at a nearby onsen property when visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu. When deciding on the stay, I received various information and felt a bit tense, but the result was very good. The onsen was especially excellent. In the large public bath, staff frequently checked the bathroom and changing area, ensuring there was no water splashing on the sink or hair on the floor. I don't think there's any other large public bath as pleasant as this. If I had to say, it seemed that some overseas guests were not familiar with onsen etiquette, so it would be better if this could be communicated. I was also pleased with the warm greetings from the staff at the reception area in front of the large public bath. There was a mix-up with the dining location guide, but the staff handled it well and recovered smoothly. It was a stay where the staff's hospitality was conveyed. The building has a historical feel and a good atmosphere, but it was a bit chilly due to the cold wave. I would like to stay again in a better season.

    Individual differences

    The bath is thoroughly cleaned, which is strongly emphasized, giving an impression of efforts to create a sense of security. It was a bit disappointing that the response of the Stays staff varied greatly among individuals. The free table tennis can be a good activity for families to enjoy together.

    Has the management changed?

    Last time was right after the incident, but I felt meticulous attention to detail, so I was considering making it my regular Stays in Fukuoka... However, both the meals and service have dropped by about 1.5 ranks, the stained glass in the bath has been removed, and the amount of pebbles has been reduced? It felt like something important and distinctive had been stripped away.
