A charming Onsen Accommodation with a wonderful atmosphere
As a rare Onsen Accommodation that uses 100% free-flowing natural spring water with no added water or heating, it immediately caught my interest as an Onsen lover, so I decided to stay here. The Onsen was a little hot, but the water was very clear and felt wonderful. The Key Bath and Standing Bath were fascinating along with their history, and the private riverside bath offered a relaxing soak while looking out over the Yoshii River stream—truly a pleasant Onsen experience. The building has a great atmosphere and feels calm and comfortable. The staff were also kind, courteous, and welcoming. I had a genuinely enjoyable stay, but considering the price, there were a few disappointing points. For an Accommodation in this class, I expected complimentary drinks (free flow), but that wasn’t the case—even items in the refrigerator were charged. There is tea in the Room, but no coffee, and there is no coffee service in the lobby either. After dinner there was wine, alcohol, and coffee service at a house across the street where we could relax for a while, but snacks to go with drinks still cost extra. Since this is such a lovely place overall, I only wished these kinds of services were offered just a little more generously.

Ruined by the rain
I was able to take an unusual weekday off, so I traveled from Osaka to Okayama, but unfortunately the weather was terrible—right in the middle of the rainy season with a typhoon approaching. Since we stayed in a room with a private open-air bath, we were really looking forward to it, but because there’s no roof over the bath, when it rains you get hit directly by raindrops while bathing. I understand that bad weather affects the view as well, but if some kind of measures could be provided for rainy days, our overall satisfaction would have been even higher.\n\nThe meal portions were just right for us (high-middle age), and we enjoyed the great idea of eating sashimi without using soy sauce. The freshly cooked rice served in a stone pot was delicious.

A Relaxing Accommodation
I always enjoy staying here. The Accommodation is spotless throughout, and once again I had a very comfortable stay. The staff were as friendly and attentive as ever, and their warm hospitality is always soothing.\nThe Onsen was wonderful. I especially enjoyed relaxing in the Kagi-bath and the standing bath, which helped me unwind and relieve my everyday fatigue.\nEach dish was delicious, and I took my time savoring the meal.\nEvery visit reminds me what a lovely Accommodation this is—one where I can truly relax. I look forward to returning again.

Revisiting after 9 years
The serene Yoshii River scenery and the Onsen remained unchanged. The renovated room made the stay even more comfortable. It was truly relaxing. Next time, I will visit with my family.

The service does not match the price.
Compared to onsen ryokans in the same price range across the whole country, it cannot be said that the service provided matches the price. While there is no complaint about the hot springs of Okutsu Onsen, the atmosphere of the onsen town, or the beautiful scenery of Yoshii River, and I would like to visit Okutsu Onsen again, I would not choose to stay at this ryokan again. This is not a matter of whether it is a cultural property or not; services should be improved from a guest's perspective to meet standard expectations for its price. - There was no confirmation contact immediately after completing the reservation; I had to check myself. Considering recent frequent issues with reservation sites, even one confirmation message would provide reassurance for guests. - There were no free drinks provided in the room. Even business hotels costing tens of thousands per night generally offer complimentary bottled water; however, there wasn’t even a cold water pitcher (thermos) available here. - The private open-air bath attached to our detached room only had a bathtub without any washing area or soap products prepared. Guests who use private baths often have specific reasons for wanting privacy—for example, elderly parents with mobility issues. If they are forced to use communal baths just for washing purposes, then having an in-room bath loses its value entirely. - Wearing outdoor geta sandals with socks provided by this ryokan made walking difficult as socks slipped inside them. I was very concerned about my elderly parents with mobility issues potentially falling down; however, there were no suggestions such as wheelchairs or assistance offered. - When asking for directions after checking out, I expected some kind of map or guide but was only told verbally: "Just go straight down that road and you'll see it." - The food was delicious overall. Although the miso-marinated Spanish mackerel tasted overly salty—perhaps due to over-marination—the dishes were carefully crafted one by one and enjoyed without leaving anything behind.

One of the rare accommodations in Japan with a natural foot-bath onsen, offering pure, free-flowing hot spring water without heating, dilution, or sterilization.
Thank you so much for the heartfelt hospitality. The time spent at the historic Okutsuso felt as if time slowed down, allowing us to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and truly relax. The meticulous attention to detail throughout the accommodation and the warm smiles of all the staff deeply moved us. In particular, at the standing bath, we were enveloped by the warmth of water bubbling up from beneath our feet, feeling relaxation from deep within. The meals were all delicious, especially the Akou Sakushu Steamed Dish and Chiya Beef Onsen Shabu-shabu, which left an unforgettable impression. Thanks to everyone’s efforts, this became a memorable experience for us. We look forward to visiting again soon. We are excited about your 100th anniversary celebration in two years. A note from my husband: He was slightly disappointed not being able to meet with both your president and proprietress in person. However, he heard from your staff that there might be some plans in place for your centennial celebration—something we are very much looking forward to! The Chiya Beef Onsen Shabu-shabu was exceptional; its marbled lean meat was outstanding. Your onsen is superb, and now combined with excellent cuisine, it has transformed into an extraordinary accommodation. We plan on visiting again next year during firefly season when frogs sing by the riverbank. Apologies for this lengthy message!

The standing bath, k...
The standing bath, key bath, two private baths, and the open-air bath in the room were all extremely comfortable. The first two especially were impressive as you could see the natural spring bubbling up. Regarding meals, being in a mountainous area, I was expecting river fish and mountain delicacies but was disappointed to find more seafood. I stayed in a detached accommodation; however, since anyone can enter without passing through the main entrance, I believe there is a security issue. There was a small mistake during breakfast service. It was minor enough that resolving it among staff would have been sufficient, but while having coffee in the lounge later on, the young proprietress came to apologize personally. I was impressed by how well communication between staff members is managed from top to bottom. Thank you for providing such a comfortable stay!

Revitalizing Hot Spring Hospitality with Natural Flowing Waters
The standing bath and key bath undoubtedly offer the best water quality and quantity among all the Onsen I have experienced. What a delightful Onsen accommodation! Everything was perfectly clean, and I had a restful sleep. All my accumulated fatigue was washed away, leaving me refreshed and energized after just one night. The room, beautifully designed with the wonderful taste of the young host couple, was incredibly comfortable, and I thoroughly enjoyed the meals as well. This is an accommodation I can wholeheartedly recommend.

A Brief Getaway
I spent a much-needed day off after a hectic period with my family since early spring. The soothing sound of the river made it feel like I had slipped into another world. Although it was just one day, I enjoyed multiple baths and delicious meals served with care, down to every grain of rice, in charming dishware. The private open-air bath by the stream was especially delightful, and I indulged in it both morning and evening. As someone with a larger frame and foot pain, I appreciated having a bed but wished there were chairs in the Japanese-style room as well. I look forward to visiting again during another season—thank you very much!

Renovated Room
This was not my first stay, but this time I stayed in a newly renovated room. The room was on the second floor near a different entrance of the accommodation, which had not been used recently and has now been beautifully renovated. They managed to retain the traditional Ryokan atmosphere while updating it skillfully. The hallway, in particular, had a wonderful ambiance. Originally, I planned to join the firefly tour, but unfortunately, it rained. Although that was disappointing, I decided to enjoy the bath instead. As always, the bathwater was excellent. The newly renovated riverside bath also felt brighter and more inviting. The food was delightful as well. When I brought my parents here before, we found the seasoning a bit strong; however this time it had changed to a gentler flavor and tasted very delicious. Upon leaving, I learned that there is now a new head chef—something exciting to look forward to for future visits. I stay here every year and have enjoyed seeing all of these renovations recently; though they are exciting changes, they do make me slightly concerned about sustainability... This is such an irreplaceable place for me—I hope it continues forever! In my small way of support—I will visit again soon. Thank you for another relaxing stay!

Hot springs and meals are exceptional!
Last-minute reservation without much prior information. Although I was a bit anxious, I used the accommodation and instantly fell in love with it. The hot spring water is gentle, and not only are there key baths and standing baths, but also private baths and open-air baths in the room with 100% natural flowing hot spring water. The elaborate kaiseki cuisine was excellent! Enjoying a nightcap at the lounge across the way after dinner was so relaxing. The bed's comfort was perfect as well. I had a wonderful time here. This is an accommodation I would love to visit again.

Wonderful Onsen Accommodation
Limited to 8 groups per day. Four unique Onsen experiences. Exquisitely renovated rooms. Above all, the quality of the water. Natural free-flowing hot spring with no temperature adjustment. Subtle and refined hospitality. It was perfect. I will visit again. The only downside was that the meals were too plentiful, making it difficult to finish everything out of courtesy not to leave any behind.

Exquisite Hot Springs
I truly enjoyed the quality of the hot spring water!! It was peaceful, with only the sound of the flowing river and frogs. The meals were filled with thoughtful touches, leaving me completely satisfied.

Thank you for the meal.
I visited after six months. This time, the room was a riverside Japanese-style room on the second floor. Sometimes sleeping on a futon is nice too. At dinner, I initially felt something was different. Ah, I see—the head chef has changed. I used to love the traditional dishes here like steamed yam cake, steamed glutinous rice, and shredded meat hot pot, but now it has been updated to more stylish and modern cuisine. It was absolutely delicious! However, I think there are guests who seek the traditional flavors as well, so it would be great if there were options to choose from. The room was clean as always, and needless to say, the onsen is fantastic. This is an accommodation I want to keep visiting in the future. Please continue evolving little by little!

Unexpected Snowfall
It was a long time since I last visited Okutsuso. The room's washroom was cold. I think it would be good to have some kind of heater during winter. There was a mini heater in the toilet. The room was comfortable with a massage chair. I enjoyed the good water of the bath with its continuous flow. As expected of a hidden Onsen. The meals have improved from before and were delicious. The old house across the road from the Ryokan has been turned into a salon, and it was nice to have coffee and alcohol available on a self-service basis at night. The next morning, I was surprised to see snow falling and accumulating a little, but I managed to return safely even with normal tires. The staff were all smiling and working hard, and their hospitality was conveyed. I would like to visit again in a season when normal tires are okay. Onsen lovers, please be sure to visit.

Revisiting after 14 years
It was my first visit in 14 years, and after the renovation, the Ryokan has become even more charming. There’s nothing here, but that’s what makes it great. There are mountains, a river, a one-of-a-kind Onsen bubbling up at your feet, delicious and wholesome cuisine paired with sake, and just the right amount of attentive yet unobtrusive service—there’s nothing more to ask for. I don’t need the latest heating Facility, and even though the Room key has its quirks and there are some inconveniences, it doesn’t bother me at all. If a nuclear war were to break out or I were to be diagnosed with an incurable disease, I’d bring all my assets here, stay until I ran out of money, and spend my days carving woodblock prints.

I traveled a long wa...
I traveled a long way to stay at Okutsuso, a well-reviewed Onsen in the Chugoku region. The exterior and entrance had a charming atmosphere, which was very nice, but once inside, I didn't feel much of that charm. The Onsen, with its free-flowing hot spring water, was excellent. The standing bath, in particular, was rare and wonderful even nationwide. Although the water is alkaline, colorless, and odorless, it was unique in utilizing the riverbed. However, there were only a few amenities. Meals were served in a semi-private dining area and were generally delicious. I was worried because the initial appetizers at dinner were all too salty, but other than that, I was generally satisfied. The service after the meal was also good. I thought the staff was doing their best with a small number of people, but considering the accommodation price range, I felt they were understaffed. The guest room was very disappointing. I chose the cheapest room, which was next to a storage room, extremely small, and had no space to relax at all. It was unclear what they referred to as a courtyard. Honestly, I felt that this room was not acceptable at this price range and location. Furthermore, when I checked the IKYU site, I found that on weekdays, many rooms were available, and higher-priced rooms were offered at a much lower price than ours just a few days before our stay. Since it was a weekday and only half of the rooms were occupied, I had a faint hope that they might upgrade our room, but that didn't happen. I think it's counterproductive for a luxury Ryokan in the countryside to mimic the dynamic pricing system used by Business Hotels in the city, as it only damages their reputation. A good Property with confidence and pride in itself sets a fair price and does not change it, so I was very disappointed with the business-like attitude of the Property this time. Even without that, based on my experience of staying at many Ryokans of the same class, I don't think it was a Property worth the price.

Recommended for those who prioritize customer service.
The staff's courteous service to the many elderly guests was impressive. For us in our 30s who don't require much of those services, it might have been a bit early to fully enjoy the charm of Okutsuso... The massage chair permanently installed in the room was surprisingly satisfying, and we used it many times. A river flows right in front, and the view is nice, but there wasn't much fulfillment from strolling around. Maybe just the footbath... We aimed to see the autumn leaves of Okutsukyo, but whether it was the timing or the way it was lit up, the satisfaction was low. This is not something attributed to Okutsuso, but it left an impression that there is a lack of enjoyment outside the Property. If there are other attractions or ways to enjoy, I would love to know.

The dishes were served in small portions with a variety of flavors, and they were freshly prepared to our liking, which was satisfying. The tiled stairs and floors leading to the bath also give a sense of history. The key bath and standing bath also have charm. However, there are many steps, so it is recommended to use them while you are still physically fit. It was nice to have coffee after dinner at the shop in front of the property, which was a service not available before. Encountering a few stink bugs in the room was a bit of a letdown.

Visit Again
It was a trip with expectations for the autumn leaves season, but the maple leaves had just started to change color, so it was a bit early. I somewhat expected it, but it was disappointing. I have visited the Stays many times, but I was kindly upgraded to a renovated Room. It was a cozy Room with an indoor bath and a very nice atmosphere. Although the sound of the river was not as soothing due to the heavy rain the day before, I was able to relax. What bothered me was that although there was an indoor bath, there were no amenities like shampoo, which was inconvenient. The vent cover in the washroom suddenly came off and fell twice. The bath mat in the indoor bath got caught every time it was opened and closed. I hope these can be improved. The bath was as good as ever. The food was delicious, but since the COVID-19 situation has calmed down, I would have liked to dine more leisurely. I was able to spend a relaxing and calm time again this time, so I hope the good aspects remain forever and continue to be a new place.

We stayed here for a family trip.
We stayed with four family members, including my elderly in-laws. There was a massage chair installed in the room, and although we don't usually use massage chairs, it was perfect to use after enjoying the excellent Onsen at Okutsuso. It seems that various areas have been renovated, and my in-laws mentioned that the bath has become brighter and easier to use. After dinner, we all went to the old house cafe Samute in the building in front and enjoyed chill time. It seemed to be a new and refreshing experience for my elderly in-laws. They hadn't been going out much recently, so they were very satisfied with the delicious food and the Onsen after a long time. It was a great way to show appreciation to my parents-in-law, and we are grateful for that.

The quality of the Onsen water is top class.
Okutsuso is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of the country, and although the Facility is old, the quality of the Onsen is top class. Additionally, the open-air bath attached to the Room is always filled with natural flowing Onsen, allowing you to enjoy it to your heart's content. With a limited number of guest rooms, it's delightful that you can use the private bath anytime. The Room is clean and has a good atmosphere. The level of cuisine is also high, so you can enjoy both dinner and breakfast.
