    Always amazing, no matter when you visit!

    This is my favorite Accommodation. It had been far too long since my last visit, but it’s still just as wonderful. The food was exceptional as well. I’ll come back again in a different season. The sake tasting set, matsutake mushroom hot pot soup, imoni (taro stew), udon, and hassun platter were all outstanding.

    The summer festival event was great.

    I’m a repeat guest. At the festival, the shaved ice, fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, edamame, and konjac were all very delicious. The draft beer tasted exceptionally good. Since meals were served in the Room, I was able to dine in a relaxed atmosphere. Two different types of rice were served, so I could compare them—both were delicious. Next time, I’d like to stay in a different Room.

    Even though it was recommended.

    I stayed in a Zao-view Room that did not appear to have been renovated. I understand it was my responsibility not to confirm in advance, but the age of the Room, along with the dirt and odor, made it difficult to relax. The futon was extremely thin—something you rarely see these days—and even felt like a nostalgic throwback to my childhood (the Showa era), but this was too much. Perhaps I was careless for not checking the Room details, but if you could note at the time of Reservation that “this Room has not been renovated,” guests would be less likely to feel disappointed after arrival. Since the meals and baths were great, it’s unfortunate that this ended up being a disappointing trip.

    Everything—from the Facility and service to the meals—was excellent, and we were completely satisfied! This is an Accommodation we would definitely love to visit again. The nature around Kaminoyama and the charm of the town were also wonderful.

    Mother’s Day Gift

    I visited with my sister and my elderly mother to give her a Mother’s Day gift and spend some relaxing time together. At my sister’s request, we stayed at Meigetsuso for the first time, traveling from Tokyo; for my mother, it was her first visit in 13 years since she last came with my late father. The three of us enjoyed reminiscing, took in the view of Zao from the Onsen, and savored delicious meals while spending a truly restful time. My mother was delighted and said she’d like to come again next time with my sister-in-law coming from Yamaguchi Prefecture and my niece—five of us in total. Thanks to the thoughtful care of the staff, we were completely satisfied. Thank you very much for your hospitality. We look forward to staying with you again.

    An excellent Accommodation in every way.

    All the staff were very kind—thank you for everything from our welcome to our send-off. The care put into the meals came through in both the flavors and the attentive service. Next time, I will make a Reservation for a Room with beds. Until the day before, it was extremely hot, but on the day we visited it was almost cold due to the sudden temperature change. I’m sure it was hard on everyone at the Accommodation as well. I truly appreciate all of you for working so diligently in such unsettled weather.

    In Full Bloom of Spring

    It was my first time visiting Kaminoyama Onsen. Surrounded by cherry blossoms in full bloom, with views of the Zao mountain range from the Room, relaxing large public baths and private Onsen, and delicious meals that soothed the soul, I fully enjoyed spring. The Saito Mokichi Memorial Museum in the same city and the cherry blossoms at Tsukioka Park were also magnificent.

    Highly satisfied

    My wife, our 2.5-year-old son, and I stayed for one night on Thursday the 5th in the “Hanada” Room. Our train-loving son had never ridden the Yamagata Shinkansen or seen a snowy landscape, so we thought Kaminoyama Onsen—where snowfall is usually not extreme—would be a good choice. We chose Meigetsuso because it offers in-Room dining and an in-Room Onsen bath. It was slightly over our budget, but we were more than satisfied. We also really appreciated that the Ryokan covered our taxi fare from the station. They handled our advance requests perfectly, and everything from arrival to check-in and being shown to our Room was smooth. The property has a wonderful atmosphere and is designed for a relaxing stay—our family even felt like we were on a little adventure exploring it. The view from the Room was outstanding: the Zao mountain range by day, and at night an actual “bright moon,” true to the name. The Room was spacious and separated into a bedroom, dining area, and living area, which made it very comfortable. The semi-open-air bath in the Room was great, but since we were there anyway, we also made a Reservation for a private family bath. It was a bit hot for us, but spacious and excellent. There was one stink bug that scared my wife and son, but that’s probably unavoidable at a nature-rich Ryokan like this. Besides that, there are also large public baths and private open-air baths—we regret that we couldn’t try them all. Dinner featured local ingredients, and both the food and drinks were delicious. If I had to mention one thing, there were slightly long gaps between courses. As we got fuller over time, the final steak—while very tasty—felt quite heavy. After our child fell asleep at night, my wife and I took turns enjoying the in-Room bath. We opened the window to get an open-air feel as well. In the morning we used the large public bath; since no one else was there, we could soak slowly in peace. Breakfast was also served in-Room. The two types of rice cooked in individual pots each had their own character and were delicious—best of all, I got to enjoy crispy scorched rice again for the first time in ages. At checkout they called us another taxi as well. Everything from start to finish was truly excellent. A couple of small points: Are the garden lights set to turn off automatically by time? I would have preferred them turned off a bit earlier. Also—and I understand this may be due to legal restrictions—I think many guests want a beer right after bathing. Room service is fine; however if alcohol can’t be sold on-site otherwise (or if options are limited), would it be possible to install paid beer taps/dispensers in or near the post-bath lounge? That said، these are not complaints that lower my evaluation of your Ryokan—more like minor requests. The bigger “problem” is that other Ryokan may not feel satisfying after this stay. I’m not sure what to do!

    Savor the Charm of Winter

    It had been a while since our last stay, but the hospitality was so wonderful that everyone in our family said, “As expected of Meigetsuso.” Although it was typical for this time of year, the snowy scenery was truly refreshing, we enjoyed delicious seasonal cuisine with all five senses, and the pleasant Onsen left both body and mind completely relaxed. In particular, the staff member in charge of our Room gave a fluent explanation of each dish, which heightened our anticipation for dinner and made it an especially memorable time. We would love to visit again in a different season.

    A wonderful accommodation!!

    We stayed at Meigetsuso for a 1-night, 2-day trip during a different season from our previous visit. We reserved the same room as last time, "Hanada," and checked in around 3 PM. The room features a Japanese-style room, dining area, Western-style twin bedroom, semi-open-air bath, and terrace. The view of the Zao Mountain Range from the veranda was stunning. The scent of wood after the renovation added charm to the room. With only 20 rooms in total, the ryokan maintained a serene atmosphere. The onsen facilities included a large public bath, family bath (reservation required), open-air bath, and sauna. This time we used the large public bath, family bath (reservation required), and private open-air bath attached to our room. As before, the private open-air bath was exceptional! The meals were exquisite Japanese cuisine made with local ingredients that highlighted their natural flavors—every dish was deliciously delicate. Breakfast featured an especially delightful bagna cauda dish. Both dinner and breakfast were incredibly satisfying! Among all ryokans we've stayed at so far, this one undoubtedly offers top-class dining experiences—it was just as wonderful as last time. The staff member assigned to our room was exceptionally kind and attentive throughout our stay. To our surprise upon departure—after noticing how dirty our car had become following long-distance driving—they discreetly washed it for us! Such thoughtful service is something we’ve never experienced before!! Two staff members even came out to see us off warmly at checkout. Thanks to their hospitality—we enjoyed an incredibly pleasant 1-night stay filled with comfort and care! Highly recommended as an outstanding ryokan! We look forward to visiting again during another season!!!

    I used this for my nephew's birthday, and the meals were delicious... the bath was also satisfying. The woman in charge of serving meals in the room provided polite and excellent service.

    Celebrating the 70th birthday became an unforgettable memory.

    For over 20 years, we have been using this place for various family occasions every year. Each time, we receive heartfelt service, the food is exceptionally delicious, and the hospitality of the staff is excellent, leaving us very satisfied. This time as well, when we casually mentioned a 70th birthday celebration (Koki), they promptly offered us a complimentary wine service. We look forward to continuing to visit in the future.

    Summer in Japan

    It was an accommodation I had always dreamed of staying at. The timing worked out, and I was lucky to secure a reservation, so I stayed this time. The nostalgic scent from the hearth near the entrance instantly brought me back to my childhood. The room had a vintage feel but was very comfortable with no inconveniences, and it was impeccably clean, making my stay pleasant. Both the large public bath and the open-air bath were equally clean. And most importantly, the quality of the hot spring water—it was incredibly soft and soothing. (Apologies if I'm mistaken.) At home, we always have the TV on, but none of us turned it on during our stay here. We enjoyed the fresh green scent of summer, listened to wind chimes ringing in harmony with nature's sounds, and even watched fireworks—truly experiencing "the essence of Japanese summer." This stay became a reward for myself amidst busy daily life. It truly lived up to its reputation as an exceptional accommodation. Thank you for your hospitality! The meals were absolutely delicious as well!

    Indescribable!

    The accommodation is truly exceptional! While reviews can sometimes be unreliable, every review here feels genuine and relatable. It’s the kind of place that makes you think, "Yes, this is what feeling at ease means!" I’ve stayed at quite a few accommodations before, but this one ranks among the top. Meigetsuso is so wonderful that it even has me planning my next trip to Yamagata already. I’m already excited to create a plan for my next visit! Next time, I’d love to enjoy a multiple night stay and fully savor Meigetsuso’s delicious meals. This time, we also tried out the newly built sauna—it was amazing! My husband and I both felt completely refreshed. We’re looking forward to using the sauna again during our next visit and making the most of our stay at Meigetsuso. The charming staff also deserve high praise—they were delightful! This is an accommodation I can confidently recommend to friends without hesitation.

    The day before, I stayed at Tendo-so, and the next day at Daikon no Hana. I was satisfied with all three nights, but Meigetsu-so had the best rooms, meals, and overall experience. I also appreciated that my car parked in the parking lot was washed.

    Revisit Done!

    After a week of deliberation, I made a reservation the night before. I wanted to relax, so I selected a property with Japanese hospitality and preferably Japanese guests. The shuttle service was also a point! Meeting just days after the full moon was the deciding factor for my reservation. Above all, I've stayed at many properties, but I was particularly impressed with the meals here. Not overly elaborate, each dish conveyed care and thoughtfulness. The balance of flavors and harmony with the tableware were delightful. Therefore, I've decided to revisit. The staff's demeanor was beautiful, and I found each piece of furniture and decor in the property fascinating to observe. The private bath was excellent; I used it three times. On the other hand, as soon as I entered the large public bath, I noticed a chlorine smell which limited me to one visit only—likely due to hygiene reasons—but it was my only disappointment. Next time, I'll opt for a room with an onsen view of Zao (Zao).

    It was a highly satisfying stay.

    It was my fourth visit in 26 years. I finally managed to stay as the Room I wanted and the dates I preferred didn’t align for a long time. There were places I remembered, places I had forgotten, and places I was seeing for the first time. The view of Zao brought back nostalgic memories. While chatting with the staff about it being a long time since my last visit, they kindly went out of their way to look up the details of the Room for me (I was delighted to find out about three Rooms). Other staff members also treated us warmly, making our stay very comfortable. The meals were just the right amount and flavor for us as a couple, and we were very satisfied. The bath in the Room was so pleasant that I soaked in it multiple times, even during the night. We talked about visiting again soon without a long gap this time. Thank you very much.

    First Trip to Yamagata

    Good Points: The semi-open-air Onsen attached to the room (with a shower room), private family bath (indoor only) for 40 minutes, and private open-air bath (available when the lamp in front of the stairs is off) are ideal for families with children or foreign tourists unfamiliar with large public baths. The Ryokan covers taxi fares from Kaminoyama Onsen Station to the Ryokan (no detours allowed) and back. Check-in can be done leisurely while seated in a reception lounge (check-in starts at 2:00 PM). Most tourist attractions, such as fruit picking, Fruit Land, horseback riding, and small amusement parks for children, are within a 15-minute taxi ride. Meals are served in-room for both breakfast and dinner. Dinner is served as a course meal, with staff presenting beautifully named dishes towards the end of your meal. The portions were satisfying; we enjoyed many small dishes along with Yamagata beef steak, rice, and udon noodles—leaving us very full. The hotel reception staff, serving staff during meals, and locals at tourist spots were all incredibly kind and friendly; their warmth was very healing for us travelers from Tokyo. Areas for Improvement: There was a stink bug in the family bath (the rooms had thorough pest control measures along with warning notices). It was drizzling when we went out sightseeing; two young male staff members saw us off from the Ryokan entrance to where our taxi waited under the carport but did not hold umbrellas while accompanying us despite us carrying luggage with children—it would have been nice if they had offered umbrellas. The website mentioned that breakfast could be prepared without encountering hotel staff so guests could relax in their rooms before heading to a separate dining area where it would be served. However, when we heard "Your breakfast is ready," we assumed that meant they had left after setting up everything—but upon opening our door unprepared without makeup on yet—we found them waiting at our dining table! It startled me into rushing my preparations unexpectedly early! Since breakfast isn’t like dinner courses requiring explanations anyway—and instructions already exist—it’d feel more relaxing if they'd leave after setup while notifying guests accordingly instead of staying around unnecessarily unless requested otherwise by those preferring interaction/explanations/tea service etc., which remains subjective preferences differing among individuals overall!

    I relaxed.

    It was very quiet, and I relaxed in the Onsen. The meals were excellent in both quantity and seasoning. I also enjoyed good sake, and it was perfect. I felt like visiting again during the time when it snows a little.
