A Wonderful Long-Established Accommodation in Ibusuki

This Accommodation is located just a short walk from the Ibusuki Sand Bath Hall. It was very convenient, and we were even able to borrow towels at the property when going to the sand bath, which made it easy to fully enjoy the experience. The traditional Japanese-style Ryokan is simply stunning, from the furnishings to every corner of the building. Each staff member’s hospitality was exceptional, and I couldn’t believe such a wonderful place could be so reasonably priced. The property also offers a footbath, foot sand bath, and a lounge, so even with bad weather we were able to relax comfortably indoors. The meals were all delicious, and although we stayed only one night, we had a truly restful time. It’s an outstanding Accommodation, and I would love to stay again.

This Ryokan was amazing, to say the least!

My long-awaited trip to Ibusuki finally came true, and I had the pleasure of staying at Ibusuki Shusuien. Everything was outstanding: the warm and attentive service from the staff, the historic atmosphere of this long-established Ryokan, spotless guest rooms, free-flowing Onsen straight from the source, and delicious meals. (I’ve stayed at a few Hotels on my limited travels, but this became an unforgettable Ryokan for me.) It was so wonderful that I honestly wondered if someone as young as me deserved to stay at such a great Ryokan. My only regret is that I felt unwell during my stay and couldn’t finish my meal. (I truly feel terrible about it...) Please let me make up for it when I stay again...! I’m still savoring the afterglow of what was, even understatedly, an incredible stay—and I feel like other Hotels might pale in comparison (lol). It was truly a luxurious time. If you ever visit Ibusuki, please do yourself a favor and stay here. I’ll say it again: it’s amazing!

We were soothed by the delicious kaiseki cuisine and the inn’s historic atmosphere.

We thoroughly enjoyed the heartfelt, wonderful local cuisine, including Kagoshima’s signature fresh silver-stripe round herring (kibinago) sashimi, and could truly feel the chef’s skill and dedication in every dish. The building features traditional architecture, allowing us to relax comfortably throughout our stay. Since our visit coincided with a spring tide, we were also able to enjoy the nearby sand-bath Onsen right by the water’s edge—something not usually available. Although it happened to be the day a major earthquake struck Kumamoto, we felt less shaking than expected and were relieved by how solid and well-built the property was. We would love to visit again if we have the opportunity.

    We had a wonderful day.

I stayed for one night starting July 18. Thank you for your thoughtful call when I missed the Shuttle Service to Ibusuki Station and for checking on me. The sand bath was nearby, and I really enjoyed it. There was also a Pokémon manhole cover. I enjoyed the seasonal dishes and drinks as well. It was a shame that the drink I wanted was sold out, but everything was very delicious. I also appreciate the attentive service and clear explanations from the staff member in charge. The Onsen, including an open-air bath, was very satisfying. They even lent me a parasol, and I could feel considerate attention to detail from all the staff, which made my stay very comfortable. If I have the chance, I would like to stay again.

    Thank you for your help.

I had been planning a trip to Kagoshima for some time, and choosing Shusuien was absolutely the right decision. It’s in a great location close to the sand bath I wanted to visit, and the service was outstanding—there was nothing to complain about, including lending me a parasol. Thank you very much.

It was an Accommodation I absolutely had to visit.

Ranked near the top of the “Top 100 Hotels and Ryokan Chosen by Professionals,” it was a Ryokan I had always wanted to visit someday, known as No. 1 in Kyushu. However, that reputation belonged to 20–30 years ago. Over the decades, many high-quality Hotels and Accommodations have opened and surpassed it, and today it felt like an ordinary Accommodation. It was a good reminder that if you don’t keep striving to improve, you will be overtaken.

The food was delicious, and the hospitality was attentive yet unobtrusive.

More than 30 years ago, I visited with my family for lunch, and the wonderfully delicious food from that time stayed with me all these years. This time, I stayed for one night with breakfast and dinner included. Just as I remembered, every dish was truly delicious and deeply satisfying. I enjoyed it with a real sense of nostalgia. All the staff were calm and quiet, offering understated yet attentive hospitality that really touched me. The bath water was also soft, and it soothed both body and mind. This is a Hotel I would love to return to again and again.

    Meals are…

To be honest, despite the excellent reputation, I cannot rate the meals at all—neither dinner nor breakfast. The ingredients and flavors were of a low standard, and I even wondered if the head chef had changed. The attendant appeared to be from overseas, but worked very hard to provide service, for which I am grateful. The front desk staff were unfriendly, which made this one-night stay very disappointing.

A Highly Satisfying Golden Week Trip to Kagoshima (3 Days, 2 Nights)

This was my first visit to Kagoshima. I had long wanted to stay in Ibusuki Onsen, and after considering several options, I chose Shusuien based on its reputation for having Japan’s best cuisine for 40 years and the Reviews. It was close to the sand bath I had been hoping to try, and they also provided towels and other items, so I could enjoy it smoothly. The meals were completely satisfying in variety, taste, and portion size—especially the abalone grilled with miso, which was outstanding and truly surprised me. From check-in to check-out, all the staff provided wonderful service with a pleasant attitude. I regret that I forgot to ask her name, but thank you very much to the female staff member who took care of our meals and even saw us off at checkout until our car was out of sight. The only drawback regarding Facilities was that moving from the front lobby to the 1st floor and B1 floor requires using stairs, which felt inconvenient. Still, this is an Accommodation I would definitely like to stay at again while I am still able to walk on my own.

A charming retro Onsen accommodation with excellent cuisine

I’d been wanting to stay at Shusuien for a long time. We enjoyed sparkling wine in the lounge as a welcome drink. When we chose the Plan that includes the sand bath Onsen, they provided a complimentary set of bath towels and towels to take from the Accommodation, so if you’re planning to walk to “Sunamushi Onsen Saraku,” I think this set Plan is a great deal (bath towels cost extra on-site). It’s about a 4-minute stroll in yukata to Saraku. The changing area was lively and crowded, and wearing yukata made changing easier, which was very convenient. After returning to the Accommodation, we were also treated at the bar to “Chabushi,” made by dissolving bonito flakes and miso in hot water. They also offered herbal tea, zenzai (sweet red bean soup), and shochu. Our Room luckily had an ocean view from the window, and we were able to relax at an unhurried pace—even taking a nap. The Onsen was wonderful too; despite having a large public bath, it felt almost private—perhaps because our stay included weekdays or because we avoided peak hours. It left my skin silky smooth, and the Stephen Knoll shampoo, conditioner, and body soap were excellent as well. The building does feel somewhat aged, but that added charm with a nostalgic Showa-retro atmosphere. The dressing area also had sinks and mirrors for hair dryers spaced generously apart, making it truly stress-free to use. The meals we’d been looking forward to were even better than expected—so good that even when I got full halfway through while enjoying small portions one by one, I still couldn’t stop eating because everything was delicious. The flavors were gentle with rich dashi depth, so even when you’re full there’s no sense of heaviness or guilt. Breakfast came with an adorable illustrated postcard as well—and of course it was completely satisfying. I’ve stayed at many high-end Hotels and Ryokan around Japan, but this may be my favorite breakfast of all (it would have been even better if coffee had been available in the lounge after breakfast!). The shop selling souvenirs and drinks had great selections—I found myself stopping by many times. I loved the sample amenities provided at the sink in our Room so much that I purchased them at the shop. We also used their shuttle service for pick-up/drop-off at the station; it was truly a wonderful stay where both body and mind could fully unwind. As expected from such a popular long-established Ryokan—the level of satisfaction is simply different. Thank you for such a great experience."""

It was a wonderful Accommodation with warm hospitality.

I stayed one night with my 87-year-old mother, my sister, and my niece on a girls’ trip. Everyone was kind and helpful, making it a very pleasant Accommodation. Plenty of towels were provided, and “ozensai” (sweet red bean soup) and herbal tea were available in the post-bath lounge, which made the stay very convenient. I rated the bath 4 points because the bathwater temperature in the evening felt a little low (while it was a bit high in the morning). I also rated the meals 4 points: both dinner and breakfast were filling and satisfying, but although the miso-grilled abalone and hot pot tasted great, they were quite salty, so it was disappointing that we couldn’t finish them.

Delicious meals, kind staff, a relaxing bedroom and Onsen, and a private dining room—everything was wonderful! It truly deserves its place among Japan’s Top 100 Hotels & Ryokans. It became a wonderful memory for my 77th birthday.

Thank you for your warm hospitality!!

This was our second trip to Ibusuki with my grandmother and three grandchildren. The staff member who served our dinner and breakfast provided wonderful hospitality, and we were able to enjoy a comfortable stay until the very end! Everyone who assisted us was kind and welcoming. We were especially impressed that they waved goodbye to us until we were out of sight. We hope to visit again while my grandmother is still doing well!!

    Services Beyond Photos and Specifications

Comprehensive and attentive service. The meticulous care extended to even the smallest details was astonishing for someone accustomed to Business Hotels or casual Hotels. It became clear how much effort the staff put into every aspect of their service. This is something that cannot be conveyed through photos or descriptions alone. What surprised me most was the pickled vegetables served at breakfast. The edges of the carrots were neatly squared off, leaving me with a small but profound impression: "They go this far for just pickles!" While the Facility itself is not new, it is more than compensated by exceptional service powered by manpower, making this Ryokan truly remarkable. The Onsen features sodium chloride water with a faint salty taste when sipped—a perfect Onsen for purification rituals.

    Ibusuki Shusuien

We had a relaxing stay at this traditional Ryokan. Upon arrival, we were served matcha and sweet potato yokan. The meals were delicious, and the service was attentive. The Room had yukata in various sizes (large, medium, small). Each Room had a name with local place names written on it. The souvenir shop offered a wide variety of gifts. The Onsen water was smooth and perfect for a leisurely soak. The temperature was slightly cool, allowing for extended relaxation. A local singer performed live in the lobby after our bath, where we enjoyed beer and relaxed further. Nearby is a steam bath (sand bath), which staff from Shusuien guided us to while lending us zori sandals so we could go in our yukata—this was an entirely new experience for us! It felt even better than expected as we looked forward to it; apparently, just 10 minutes provides detox effects! The steam bath is also said to help with atopic dermatitis. Though slightly hot, sand was gently poured over us while wearing yukata—it made us sweat and feel refreshed! Adjusting the heat by moving around when it got too warm added some fun moments. Shusuien is surrounded by many other Ryokans in this peaceful area. We would love to visit again if given the chance!

    A Simple Accommodation

All of the Accommodation staff were very kind. On this trip, we were also staying at other places, so we had carry-on suitcases.\nThere are many steps inside the building, and it was difficult to get around at check-out. The Room was well cleaned, but it did feel old.\nAlthough it was described as a Japanese-Western style room, it was simply a tatami room with a tokonoma alcove and a bed placed in it. It would have been nice to have a bedside table and an electrical outlet by the bed. The meals had simple flavors and were very delicious.

It was an accommodation I would love to visit again.

The first thing that amazed us was the spaciousness of the Room. With two Japanese-style rooms, an additional sitting area, and a large living room, it was more than enough space for a multi-generational family trip. The lobby featured many historical displays, such as writings by local heroes who played active roles during the Meiji Restoration and firearms introduced to Tanegashima Island. It was enjoyable to explore these pieces of history. The meals were all delicious—truly living up to Shusuien's reputation. The warm hospitality provided by the staff was also exceptional. Thank you very much! Both the service and dining deserve more than five stars!

    A long-awaited trip ...

A long-awaited trip to Kagoshima. Ibusuki is one of my favorite places. The Onsen temperature is just right—not too hot, not too cold—perfect for me. For sand baths, you can visit Saraku nearby or Yamakawa. A good trip means being able to relax, enjoy delicious breakfast and dinner, and be greeted by staff with warm smiles and great hospitality. In that sense, although I've been to Kagoshima about 10 times, this is one of my favorite accommodations. It would be even better if coffee was provided in the room along with tea!

It was great being close to the sand bath!

At Ibusuki Shusuien, calligraphy by notable figures is subtly displayed everywhere from the entrance throughout the property, and just seeing it made me happy. I saw some Reviews saying the Facility feels outdated, but it didn’t bother me at all! As for the food, I enjoyed each dish, but I thought that if there had been fruit or something after the tender simmered Kurobuta pork, I could have enjoyed the next dish—simmered sea urchin in miso—even more. Because several rich-flavored dishes came in a row. Also, regarding the guidance from arrival to my Room: I wondered if it was really appropriate to speak so quickly and fluently like a rushing stream. I understand you have to give the same explanation every day, but it felt a bit off-putting because there were no pauses and it was delivered with little expression. On the other hand, the attendant who guided us at dinner and breakfast was very kind and attentive, which put me at ease. And when we left, I was impressed that my shoes had been polished to look brand new. Thank you for taking such good care of us!

    I had a relaxing time.

This Ryokan is perfect for those who want to enjoy delicious cuisine and relax. The "Tender Simmered Black Pork" and "Grilled Abalone with Miso" are particularly exquisite. These flavors can only be experienced here. We had a delightful meal, reconnecting with the staff member who assisted us last year and enjoying pleasant conversations with the current staff. The room was clean, well-maintained, and quiet without any disturbances from neighboring rooms. This time, we also enjoyed a sand bath within walking distance. Despite the rainy weather, we indulged in Onsen relaxation at its best. We look forward to visiting again!

    Not as expected.

It felt like a countryside Ryokan! The staff seemed well-trained, but the food was average and not as good as expected. The Room had a retro Showa-era vibe, and the restroom was a mix of old Japanese-style and renovated Western-style in the same space, which felt unusual. I was surprised by the ritual where staff greeted guests with three-finger bows. It was a Ryokan full of Showa-era charm.

    The staff were all k...

The staff were all kind, creating a warm atmosphere that allowed for a very relaxing stay. The flowers and incense in the lobby, as well as the soft quality of the onsen water, were soothing. The thoughtful touch of having plenty of face towels at the entrance to the large public bath was appreciated. However, it would be even more enjoyable if the amenities such as shampoo, conditioner, and lotion in the washroom and large public bath were upgraded. Additionally, it was disappointing that there was no tea like Senburi mentioned on your website (or perhaps I just couldn't find it?). Overall, this accommodation is comfortable, elegant, clean, and highly recommended. I would love to stay here again!

    Cuisine and Hospitality

It was a very pleasant stay. The highlight was the meals. We upgraded from the standard option, and the taste and creativity were truly deserving of its consistent top ranking in specialized magazines. Even with a picky child, it was the first time they enjoyed non-buffet meals without leaving anything behind. The staff's attentiveness made for an exceptionally comfortable stay, leaving us in great spirits throughout. If we visit Ibusuki again, this accommodation will be our top choice. The bath is somewhat small and simple, but with a nearby sand bath facility available to complement it, there’s little to complain about.
