A wonderful Ryokan after a long time

We are a couple in our 70s who enjoy driving and hiking. This time, we planned to walk the Goshikinuma hiking course and stayed at Shikisai Ikkiryoku in Bandai-Atami Onsen. With such high Review ratings, we had certain expectations, and it turned out to be a Ryokan that truly satisfied us. The staff’s hospitality and service were genuinely outstanding. From check-in and reception to being escorted to our Room and shown around, they spoke to us at just the right moments, which completely eased any anxiety about staying for the first time. We were also deeply moved when they saw us off at departure. The entire building felt very clean. It is described as a long-established Ryokan with over 100 years of history, but rather than feeling old, it had a dignified atmosphere that we found wonderful. After relaxing in the Onsen, the meals were excellent in both quality and quantity, and we thoroughly enjoyed beer and sake as well. After an early-morning bath, we took a walk around the garden. We also enjoyed viewing the garden from inside while having coffee—both experiences were wonderful. There were many autographed boards from famous guests displayed along the corridors, which was quite enjoyable. It reminded both my wife and me of how hospitality and service used to be at traditional Ryokan—“Yes, this is how it was!” As we celebrate our golden wedding anniversary this year, this became one of our most memorable stays during our travels. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us.

We were very satisfied with the garden and the meals.

Just as we had heard about this long-established Ryokan, the garden was beautifully maintained, and the fittings and amenities were of high quality, making it a calm and relaxing Accommodation for us as seniors. The meals made the most of the ingredients, and we enjoyed carefully prepared dishes served on thoughtfully selected tableware. We could also feel the warm hospitality of all the staff. The view of the Japanese garden from our Room was outstanding. We will visit again in a different season to enjoy both the garden and the cuisine.

Because this Accommodation had high Review ratings, I was interested and decided to stay. After check-out, the front desk staff offered to take photos for us and took many. Their hospitality and desire to help us create wonderful memories really came through. Thank you very much. The open-air bath was spacious enough, but I thought it would be even better if there were a spot inside where you could sit with your shoulders above the water.

A classic, long-established Onsen Ryokan atmosphere.

This was my first time here, so I don’t know the area well, but it’s probably a historic Onsen town. Perhaps because of population decline across The whole country, it’s disappointing that places like this often feel less lively. As someone from the Showa era, I feel that Onsen Ryokan are a wonderful part of Japanese culture, but they may be finding it hard to adapt to changing times. I hope good Ryokan will continue for many years to come.

It was a great Accommodation—the best I’ve stayed at in a long time.

I visited on a weekday Plan after work. It was a small kaiseki course, but I was completely full. Everything was delicious. Breakfast also came with so many side dishes that I thought, “How much rice am I supposed to eat with all this?” The clam miso soup was delicious, too. And it had proper grilled salmon for the first time in ages. I was looking for an Accommodation I could still make it to after work, and this one was the perfect choice. The bath left my skin smooth all over. I was surprised at how much better my post-surgery area looked. It’s far, so I can’t come easily, but if I get the chance again, I’ll stay here again.

A Luxurious Stay to Truly Unwind

I was able to spend a relaxing, luxurious time and truly feel refreshed. Although there aren’t many washing stations in the bath area, each one is separated by partitions, which made it easy to use at my own pace without worrying about others. There was plenty of space, and I enjoyed a very comfortable soak. Both dinner and breakfast offered a wide variety of dishes, and everything from the appetizers onward was delicious. At breakfast, I appreciated being able to choose between rice or rice porridge; the sansho-seasoned baby sardines and lightly seasoned eggplant were especially memorable. The staff’s hospitality was warm and attentive, making my stay comfortable from arrival to departure. I’m truly glad I chose Shikisai Ichiriki.

    For Family Trips

The staff were very welcoming, and the meals were delicious. There were both lukewarm and hot baths, but the lukewarm bath was too cold for me to use. The hot bath, however, was truly relaxing, and I was able to enjoy a leisurely stay.

It has a serene, calm atmosphere!

This Accommodation has a very dignified, tranquil atmosphere. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and beautifully presented—we enjoyed them with our eyes as well! The hospitality was also very warm and welcoming. If I could make one request: I understand you value the ambiance, but a bit more lighting around the outdoor Accommodation name sign and the indoor information boards would make them easier to see and understand. When it got dark outside, we got a little lost (laugh).

The staff were exceptionally kind throughout our stay. The Facility is spacious in every way—an expansive garden, large Rooms, and a wide bathing area. The Onsen is free-flowing, with more than enough fresh hot spring water. It’s rare to find a Ryokan or Hotel these days that offers such well-rounded conditions. Although it is a long-established Ryokan, it seems to be renovated regularly, and we did not feel any inconvenience at all. We only had breakfast, but there was a wide variety of carefully presented dishes featuring local ingredients—it must take tremendous effort to prepare so much from early morning. Despite all these services, the pricing is very reasonable. We also appreciated the convenient access to Lake Inawashiro and Urabandai. We imagine you have faced many challenges in recent years due to various environmental changes. We hope to support the Ryokan and the local community by staying again from time to time.

Impressed by the seamless, time-honored hospitality

A Ryokan I’d been wanting to visit for a long time. From the moment we arrived, everything flowed seamlessly—from parking guidance and handover to welcome matcha and a smooth tour of the facilities while being attended to. It was wonderful and truly moving. The Ryokan’s interior, garden, Room, and meals were all excellent. Just one thing… At dinner, the staff in charge were mostly very young. Despite it being a long-established Ryokan, their attentiveness felt a bit lacking. When bringing the dishes, I wanted them to check whether our water glasses needed refilling before coming over. I had to call them several times to ask. A child at the next table even took their own cup and went to get water themselves. For such an outstanding long-established Ryokan, that was the one area I felt needed improvement. Still, it was a wonderful Ryokan that truly soothed my heart.

    Historic Accommodation

From arrival to your Room, the proprietress kindly explained various details about the building and its history, and her attentive service made us feel at ease. The Room was located deep inside the property, so getting there took a bit of effort, but it was spacious and clean. As for dinner, we felt it might have been better with a slightly higher-grade option. Breakfast was a good portion size and we were satisfied.

    The meals were clear...

The meals were clearly prepared with care, had a nice seasonal touch, and were very delicious. Breakfast was also Japanese-style, so perhaps there was no milk available, but I would have loved to drink some tasty highland milk. The Room was assigned at the property’s discretion, but we were shown to a spacious Japanese-style room with an adjoining room, and even four adults could relax comfortably. The corridor from the front desk to the guest rooms is long and winding, so it’s easy to feel like you might get lost. However, fresh flowers are arranged throughout the property, and you can really feel the spirit of hospitality. The futon was very comfortable, and with the benefits of the Onsen as well, I slept soundly. Overall, I’m satisfied with the value for money.

Disappointing, especially given my high expectations.

We used to spend New Year’s here every year. This time, for the first time in 15 years, we made a Reservation for two special Rooms. What we liked * The meals were very delicious. * The garden was reasonably well maintained. What we didn’t like * The bath in the special Room is not heated. * It says the refrigerator is free to use, but it was empty. This should clearly state that drinks are not complimentary. * Aging Facility conditions: On the first-floor hallway on the way to our Room, there appeared to be either a leak or an overflow from drainage, and towels had been laid out across the floor. No one warned us when we passed through; we walked through with long strides. We later realized that if we had used the second-floor corridor, we could have reached the entrance and dining area without going through that section at all—so it was surprising that we were deliberately guided through it to our Room. From the dim hallway, a room with bridal bouquets left in disarray was fully visible. Staff members were tidying up while speaking loudly and casually. It is an impressive Accommodation, but this stay made us strongly feel both its aging condition and understaffing. One of our reserved Rooms had dirty windows. We were offered a change of Room, but there was a long wait for preparation; even though we checked in early, it caused enough lost time that we had to change our meal time as well. Overall, This was a family trip where we reunited after several years apart, so it was very disappointing.

Before you know it, you’ll be a repeat guest.

I’ve stayed here about three times now, and it’s truly an excellent Accommodation. It’s conveniently close to the station, and I really appreciate that they still provide a Shuttle Service. I was especially impressed when they were waiting for me even though I hadn’t made any special arrangements in advance. The Facility has a rich history and offers a spacious, relaxing atmosphere. You can see superb craftsmanship throughout, and the garden is also beautiful. The Onsen is wonderfully relaxing while looking out over the greenery. The skin-beautifying waters leave your skin silky smooth. And the best part of all is the dining. The seasonal kaiseki course, making full use of local ingredients, feels like a work of art. Everything is delicious, but I’m particularly moved by how flavorful the vegetables are. I’ll be back again.

I can’t wait to stay here again!!

In a word, I was absolutely satisfied. First of all, the welcome was wonderful and very thoughtful. The Accommodation had a calm atmosphere throughout, and upon arrival we were treated to chilled sweets and matcha, which helped us relax right away. The Room consisted of two adjoining Japanese-style rooms: we had meals in the 10-tatami room, and futons were laid out in the 6-tatami room. It was great to be able to separate sleeping and dining spaces. We chose in-room dining, and everything—from preparation and serving to explanations of each dish and clearing up afterward—was handled with such pleasant hospitality. The large public bath was very spacious. I used it three times (evening, night, and morning), and by chance no one else was there each time, so it felt like having it all to myself. The water temperature was perfect for me, and the silky-smooth quality of the spring water felt amazing. And above all—so quiet!! Not exactly “forgetting the city bustle,” but it truly felt that way: all I could hear were cicadas. Spending unhurried time on the veranda while looking out at the garden was incredibly precious. I got to enjoy the luxury of doing nothing. I had to leave early due to my schedule, but they kindly accommodated an earlier breakfast. Also, although I hadn’t requested it that morning, they even drove me to the station—it helped me so much! I would love to stay again if I have another chance. Next time I’d like to enjoy the morning coffee as well. Thank you very much.

    Easy-to-access Onsen

On my first solo trip in a while, I was looking for an Accommodation with convenient access and a “lukewarm Onsen” with great water quality, and chose Shikisai Ichiriki. Although it’s within walking distance from the station, staff came to meet me with the Shuttle Service. Since it was an extremely hot day, I really appreciated it. At checkout the next day, it was raining, but they kindly drove me to the station as well. I booked a Room-assigned-at-check-in Plan, but I was given a spacious Room overlooking a Japanese garden. I asked in advance for the futon to be laid out and was able to relax at my own pace. The Onsen had a slight chlorine smell that bothered me a bit, but both the indoor bath and open-air bath were spacious and the temperature was just right. The free-flowing “lukewarm bath” felt more “cold” than lukewarm—a low-temperature spring at 30°C. It seems the men’s lukewarm bath is larger and has better views, but unfortunately the women’s is very small—only enough for one or two people. There was a sign saying “Please soak slowly,” but unless you’re with family or friends, it doesn’t feel comfortable sharing such a small space. With no view due to surrounding partitions, I found myself worrying about others while bathing. If you could rotate the large public baths between men and women, guests would be able to enjoy the larger lukewarm bath as well—please consider this. The meals were just the right amount; at dinner I enjoyed salt-grilled ayu sweetfish and soy-milk shabu-shabu. Breakfast also offered plenty of rice accompaniments, which I enjoyed while looking out at the garden. I already knew from other Review(s) that there are no samue loungewear provided in the Room(s), so I borrowed one at reception. It was comfortable and easy to move in, but 1,500 yen per set as a rental felt expensive. These days most Accommodation(s) provide samue loungewear or let guests choose between samue loungewear and yukata—this is something I hope will be improved. All staff were polite and attentive throughout my stay, which made it very pleasant overall. If improvements such as rotating the public baths and providing samue loungewear are implemented, I would consider returning.

It had been a long time since my last stay, and I finally visited again after quite a while. It brought back fond memories. All of the staff—those who assisted us and those in charge of our meals—were very pleasant, making for a truly comfortable stay. The meals were also delicious! I really appreciated your consideration regarding ingredients I don’t like. The Onsen was also extremely relaxing! I’m truly glad I came back after so long.

    Great Accommodation

We stayed over the weekend. The staff were wonderful, and we had a very comfortable stay. The meals were excellent in both quantity and quality. The drink selection was especially extensive, and the sake comes highly recommended. However, there were no power outlets by the bedside in the Room, which made charging a smartphone inconvenient. It’s a very nice Accommodation, and we would love to stay again.

The meals were so delicious that I came back again. Everything is great, but the sashimi is especially outstanding. All the staff are kind, and I truly appreciated being offered to have our photo taken, so my mother and I could get a picture together. The Onsen is also quiet and relaxing, and feels wonderful. It’s easy to reach by train, and I’d love to visit again.

I would have preferred a samue outfit over a yukata.

When I arrived at the Hotel, I was impressed first of all by the garden view. The location while enjoying matcha was wonderful. The meals were also delicious. The soy milk at breakfast was excellent. After breakfast, I could relax and enjoy coffee while looking out at the garden, which was perfect.\nJust one thing: when I asked if you had samue loungewear, I was told it could be provided for an additional fee, so I wish guests could choose between a yukata or samue.\nI love traveling and stay at many Hotels, and this Accommodation is highly recommended with great service from the staff.

    We had a relaxing stay.

The hospitality was wonderful, and we were able to relax and take our time. The guest room, the Onsen, the garden, and the food were all excellent. As this is a long-established inn, some parts of the Facility felt a bit aged, but the thoughtful touches throughout—such as the displayed flower arrangements and the warm welcome and send-off—were truly impressive. Next time, I would like to bring my parents.

    Old yet lavishly luxurious.

The garden is magnificent, but it’s a shame that the former imperial villa where Emperor Showa once stayed has fallen into disrepair. I hope it will be renovated so guests can tour it (and ideally stay there as well). The building itself is old, but it features lavish craftsmanship that would be nearly impossible to recreate today—parquet ceiling woodwork, stained glass, sandblasted decorative windows, and more. Maintaining such splendor must be difficult, but any artisan or carpenter would likely be moved to tears. The meals were outstanding—an array of ingredients perfect for early summer, beautifully seasonal in both color and presentation. The seasoning and dashi brought out the aroma and flavor of each ingredient, all prepared with great care; truly worthy of a long-established Japanese cuisine. The bath was also heavenly: after the sauna, instead of a cold plunge you can enjoy their famous lukewarm bath. Since it is separated from the indoor bath via the open-air bath area, I recommend using the changing room for the lukewarm bath when it’s less crowded. The freshly brewed morning coffee was delicious as well. Overall, I was very satisfied with the Room, meals, and Onsen at this Accommodation.

    It was a relaxing accommodation.

We stayed for two nights. It was our first time visiting Bandai-Atami Onsen. At first it felt like there was nothing around, but it was a quiet Onsen town with a lovely atmosphere. The Accommodation was very nice, and the staff were extremely kind. It was an unusually pleasant Accommodation these days. It rained both days and we couldn’t go anywhere, but while watching the rain from our Room, and while watching the rain from the Onsen bath, we never got bored and were able to relax very slowly. Thank you very much.

A Highly Satisfying Accommodation After a Long Time

Three friends and I stayed here. We all agreed it was the most satisfying Accommodation we’ve had in a long time. It was a Ryokan with refined warmth. First of all, the hospitality felt very attentive. Every staff member was pleasant. There were many younger staff as well, but they served calmly; for example, the explanations during meals were easy to hear and understand. For both dinner and breakfast, the menu card—bearing the head chef’s name—gave us confidence, and indeed everything was delicious. The chocolate yokan served with matcha upon arrival was especially wonderful; when we asked about buying it as a souvenir, we were told it is handmade and not for sale, which disappointed all three of us. The Onsen facilities were not brand-new, but both the changing area and bathing area felt clean, so we could bathe comfortably. The garden and glass details were beautiful as well, and overall it was a calm Accommodation. All three of us thought, “We want to come back again.” Thank you very much.

    I have stayed here s...

I have stayed here several times in the past, and this time my wife invited me to celebrate my birthday, so we returned after 7–8 years. Flowers were displayed throughout the building and in our Room, and the cleaning and deodorizing were thorough—I was impressed all over again. If possible, please consider the following two improvements: 1) This was my first time dining at Blossom Garden on the 1st floor, but the tables were too close together, and I was distracted by neighboring guests’ gaze and conversations. It felt like a mass-market Hotel. Since half of the dining area was empty with nothing set up, I would appreciate it if you could increase the spacing between tables. 2) A YouTube video introduced that both yukata and samue are available, but depending on the Room, samue were only available for an additional fee. The yukata felt old and worn; if so, how about switching entirely to samue? Many of this stay’s guests were elderly as well, so I think they would be easier to wear and safer for walking. This is just my personal impression, but I felt that the quality of the meals had declined. Some of Ichiriki’s signature standard dishes were no longer offered, and it didn’t feel like Ichiriki. I understand there may be business reasons for this, but since I used to be extremely satisfied with the meals before, it left me feeling disappointed.

    Dreamy Mood

It can be summed up in two words: “dreamlike” and “supremely comfortable.” This time, I treated myself to a one-night, two-day stay. From the Shuttle Service to the staff’s warm hospitality, attentive service, and clear explanations; the delicious food; the water; and the gentle, wonderfully comfortable Onsen—everything was exceptional. One of the reasons I chose this Accommodation was Suigetsuen Garden, said to have been visited by Emperor Showa. Walking through it brought a sense of serene stillness, as if a quiet other world opened within me. The garden in particular—brilliantly lit by the morning sun—was vivid and truly breathtaking. Savoring morning coffee while looking out over the garden felt like an incomparable luxury and an elegant moment. In addition, the interior design and architecture are all refined with outstanding taste—enjoyable even just to tour and admire. Overall, combining both space and hospitality, it was simply superb. The staff’s sincere kindness felt cleansing and uplifting, leaving a deep impression that has stayed with me. With comfort that made me genuinely think “I want to stay longer,” along with the mysterious beauty of the garden, this trip to Fukushima truly felt dreamlike.

    A luxurious space to relax

Although we arrived earlier than expected, the staff kindly handled our check-in and made sure we could relax comfortably. We truly felt the thoughtful attention to detail from each and every staff member. In addition to the beautiful garden, fresh flowers were arranged throughout the property, which was very soothing. The hot spring was also wonderful. We would love to visit again in a different season and enjoy the cuisine. Thank you very much for your warm hospitality.
