    Bankokuya in Atsumi Onsen certainly lives up to its reputation.

    Our room on the 10th floor was wonderful, with a lovely view. The view from the bath was also beautiful, and the staff member who served us dinner was very courteous. Everyone was so considerate, making our stay truly memorable. Visiting Atsumi Onsen for the first time in 38 years, I had a lovely time with my wife. Thank you very much. The yubeshi sweets and manju buns we bought as souvenirs were delicious, too. It was nice that they had the inn’s name on them. At my age, I have traveled to many places, but this was the best. Although it is far away, I genuinely hope to visit again someday. Thank you. .......If I may mention just one thing, the sink on the right side of the room drained poorly. I think clearing the blockage would help.

    A long-established ryokan I’d been wanting to visit

    This was our first stay. Although this is a large, long-established traditional inn, we felt that great care was taken with cleaning and especially with replenishing amenities in the various baths. The food was delicious overall. The sea bream rice was every bit as good as the reviews said. My only criticism of dinner was that the Yamagata beef for the shabu-shabu was sliced rather thickly, making it a little difficult to bite through. We booked a room with a private open-air bath because we wanted to enjoy hot spring water flowing directly from the source. The room’s open-air bath was wonderful. A deck chair or similar seating near the bath exit would have been lovely, allowing us to cool down while looking out at the garden. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the room’s indoor cypress bath. As my companion was using the open-air bath, I filled the indoor tub before washing myself. By the time I finished washing and was ready to get in, the tub was already less than half full, even though the plug was firmly in place. Listening closely, I could hear water pouring out somewhere. There was no explanation, but perhaps this bath was also designed for continuous flow, with the tap left running? I was glad we were not staying in the middle of winter. This issue is why I gave the room two stars. The cleaning seemed thorough, but I suppose this problem would be hard to notice without filling the tub. Checkout was busy, and I regret not being able to mention it to the staff.

    It was a wonderful place to stay.

    The property is very spacious, yet it is beautifully maintained wherever you go. Flowers were casually arranged even in the smallest corners, and I truly felt the thoughtful hospitality. Every meal was delicious. The sea bream–themed breakfast was also wonderfully creative. (I still regret not being able to finish the sea bream rice left in the wooden rice tub.) The dishes made generous use of local ingredients, and you could really sense pride and dedication to the region. All of the staff welcomed us with warm, gentle smiles, and we were able to relax comfortably until the very end. It was a wonderful trip—thank you very much. I’m truly grateful for such exceptional hospitality at this price point.

    A place I’d love to stay at again

    It was a great value for such a spacious room with a private hot spring. Some things are self-service, which made the service feel light and pleasant. I’d love to stay here again. (The all-you-can-drink Yasuda yogurt at breakfast (lol) made me really happy.)

    Birthday Trip

    We stayed again this year as a couple. This time we came by motorcycle instead of by car. We used early check-in and late check-out. Our room was the same type as last year, but a different room. It had a round ceramic open-air bath. It was spacious enough for two, and even more relaxing when used alone. We fully enjoyed the luxury of free-flowing hot spring water. I can’t even count how many times we soaked—we were completely pruned up (in a good way). Thank you for exchanging and providing extra bath towels. Since we were on a motorcycle, we had to pack light, which was a bit inconvenient, but we truly appreciated how kindly you accommodated our requests. The hot spring quality is excellent—my skin felt smooth, it didn’t dry out easily, and it warmed my body thoroughly. We also used the large public bath—every section at both night and morning. Because it was a weekday and there were few guests, it was quiet and very relaxing. I also borrowed a colored yukata again this year. At another inn I visit (Koyo), women can borrow colored yukata for free, so I’d be happy if that were available here as well. Rooms with private open-air baths or suites are priced higher, so complimentary yukata rental would be especially appreciated. Dinner was the shabu-shabu kaiseki course meal—same as last year—and it was delicious again. Thank you for preparing a private dining room at the restaurant as well. And thank you to the gentleman at the front desk for your thoughtful service. We enjoyed our meal in peace and quiet. I especially love the chawanmushi (savory egg custard) and the pot pie stew—they’re wonderful with seafood ingredients. And one of my main highlights: the shabu-shabu was excellent, with rich flavor but not heavy or greasy—I felt like I could eat endlessly. Another highlight is breakfast: sea bream rice! The taste hasn’t changed—it was truly delicious. The simmered sea bream was great too. Being able to enjoy consistently delicious food every time makes us very happy to come back here. I love your seasoning style. I also love the dessert pudding— not overly sweet, very smooth, and delicious. Unfortunately I accidentally broke the rice bowl I bought last year, so this year I bought two. And your hot spring manju buns were so tasty that I ended up buying some too— they were souvenirs for my coworkers, and everyone loved them (especially the sweet bean paste). This is a wonderful inn that I can confidently recommend to friends! Thank you very much. We’ll be back again.

    A Relaxing Inn

    I stayed solo this time in a room with a private hinoki cypress bath with free-flowing hot spring water. I could soak without worrying about the time, even late at night or early in the morning, and with so many options—such as the large public bath and the garden open-air bath—I was able to fully enjoy the hot springs. The meals were delicious and served warm, including Yamagata beef shabu-shabu for dinner and sea bream chazuke and simmered sea bream head for breakfast. In particular, the staff at dinner and at checkout were gentle and wonderful in their hospitality, which truly put me at ease. Thank you very much. After returning home, I immediately made a reservation for December. I look forward to staying again.

    We stayed for two ni...

    We stayed for two nights and three days as a family. When we contacted the property to let them know we would arrive later than planned, they were waiting for us outside at that time. From that moment until they kindly took photos for us when we left, all of the staff were extremely kind and consistently attentive. We truly had a comfortable stay. The Onsen was wonderful, and we fully enjoyed the large public bath, the open-air bath, and the bath in our Room. The meals were also delicious—especially the sea bream rice at breakfast, which I will never forget. We hope to visit again someday with our whole family. Thank you very much.

    We stayed in the Royal Suite.

    We stayed in the Royal Suite. As this is the highest-tier Room, we expected a corresponding sense of exclusivity not only in the guest room itself but also in hospitality and service; however, it felt somewhat lacking in that regard. The parking and check-in experience was the same as for other guests, and we did not have any opportunity to meet the proprietress during our stay. At checkout as well, there was no send-off by the proprietress or attendants, and we loaded our luggage onto a cart ourselves and took it to our car. We do not have a complaint about that in itself, but considering that we were staying in the top-tier Room, we feel that a more memorable level of hospitality would have made for a more satisfying stay. Regarding the private open-air bath in the Room, the water was extremely hot and needed to be adjusted by adding cold water ourselves. This is not simply a matter of preference but one of safety, so we would appreciate it if it could be set closer to an appropriate temperature from the start. Even more concerning were the stones laid on the floor around the open-air bath. We are not sure whether this is due to age-related wear, but there were many sharp protrusions throughout; walking barefoot caused significant pain on our soles. It was surprising even for adults, so with children it could cause them to stumble or potentially lead to injury. For peace of mind including safety considerations, we hope you will inspect this on site and review it as necessary. The meals were very delicious. Rather than dissatisfaction with any individual staff member, our honest impression is that there was a gap between what we expected as “a special experience unique to a top-tier Room” and what was actually provided. We hope this Accommodation will become even more appealing going forward.

    The meals were exceptional.

    We visited with high expectations because of its top ranking. The meals were simply delicious. Rather than the fixed, predictable menus often found at large Onsen Ryokan, each dish was carefully prepared with real attention to detail. Above all, the rice was truly outstanding. The Room was spacious and the bath was relaxing (though we had a bit of trouble because the shower pressure varied). Given its long history and scale, it felt like a missed opportunity not to allocate more staff to guest service. There were no kimono-clad proprietress or staff members, and the Shuttle Service was quite basic, which left us wanting a little more. It was disappointing precisely because everything else was so wonderful.

    We are extremely satisfied with everything.

    Dinner featured an abundance of fresh local ingredients and seasonal Yamagata specialties, and I was impressed until the very last bite. Breakfast was also varied and delicious, leaving me fully satisfied from the morning. The staff who served the meals were attentive with perfect timing and clear explanations, making it a truly luxurious experience. Not only the cuisine, but also the refined atmosphere of this long-established Accommodation, the thoughtful hospitality, and the spacious, open-air bath (Onsen) were all outstanding—everything exceeded my expectations. I felt completely refreshed in both body and mind. Thank you for the wonderful meal; I will definitely return.

    The Room was a speci...

    The Room was a special suite, so we were satisfied. Dinner included Yamagata beef shabu-shabu, but there were only three slices. They were very thick and difficult to bite through. I think shabu-shabu meat should be thinner and only lightly cooked. The sea bream chazuke at breakfast was the main dish and was tasty, but I felt we should have chosen a higher-grade meal plan. The dessert was also light.

    The meals were delicious!

    This was my second visit to Atsumi Onsen, and since I couldn’t get a Reservation at the Accommodation I stayed at before, I chose to stay here instead. The reviews were great, so I was really looking forward to it—and it did not disappoint. The building itself felt historic, but it was well maintained and spotlessly clean. Above all, the food was outstanding. The beef shabu-shabu, simmered fish, and caramel pudding for dessert—everything was delicious, and the portions were more than generous; we left completely full. Breakfast was also excellent, especially the sea bream rice and sea bream ochazuke. I also appreciated being able to enjoy drinks freely from 5:00 PM to midnight. The Onsen temperature was just right and very relaxing. I’m also grateful that staying through IKYU was cheaper than booking directly. My whole family was happy. We’ve found another Accommodation we’d love to return to. Thank you very much.

    A highly regarded Hotel, just as recognized among Japan’s Top 100 Hotels.

    We stayed in the best-value Room, and while the meals were standard, we were more than satisfied with our stay. Dinner was delicious with plenty of both quality and quantity. The sea bream chazuke at breakfast was also excellent. There were four baths, and the sauna offered löyly, which helped us fully relax. Since we chose a great-value Room, the view was a bit underwhelming; if you want to enjoy the scenery as well, it’s best to make a Reservation for a better riverside Room. If we have another chance to visit the Tsuruoka area, we would love to stay again.

    It was amazing!

    This was my first stay at Atsumi Onsen, at Bankokuya. It was an Accommodation with thoughtful attention to detail in every respect. Even though it’s such a large place, there are fresh flowers everywhere. It really made me feel that care is taken in even the smallest things. Even the outdoor covered walkway space beside the entrance was beautifully maintained. After dinner we took a short stroll along the river (the riverside path is lit up at night and has a wonderful atmosphere), and we were able to relax for a moment in that walkway area. When you look back, you can see inside through the large windows, and the warm lighting creates such an inviting ambiance that makes you want to stay there. The Room we stayed in had a private bath with free-flowing natural hot spring water, and it felt incredible... So much so that I thought it was worth coming just for this indoor bath alone. Maybe it’s because it’s free-flowing from the source—the water just feels like your body is truly enjoying it. The moment you get in, you can’t help but sigh with relief. I was already completely satisfied with just the in-room bath, but the large public bath was also wonderful—the corridor leading there builds excitement, and I loved touches like partitioned spaces in the hair-dryer room using fabric dividers. In any case, even if you only focus on bathing, there never seems to be enough time. It honestly made me wish I had checked in earlier so I could enjoy nothing but baths. And then there’s the food—absolutely delicious. Hot dishes were served hot and cold dishes cold, with perfect timing throughout. The portions were far more than what we usually eat, yet everything tasted so good that we finished it all anyway. I think most men would find it more than satisfying in quantity as well. My friend and I did say it would be nice if there were menu options for women or lighter eaters too. For breakfast we thought we might not be able to eat much because we still felt full from dinner... but the sea bream rice was so good that both of us ended up getting seconds. Most of all, their hospitality was excellent. As an aside: my friend and I are hard of hearing, and they accommodated us very thoughtfully—even providing handwritten communication at our dining table. I’m grateful for having found such a wonderful Accommodation by chance, and I’d love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    A relaxing Accommodation with luxurious cuisine and infinity chairs!

    There are four bath areas, and two of them even have infinity chairs! The cold-water bath is continuously flowing—it's not ice-cold, but it’s pleasantly refreshing. Diamond members receive a welcome drink of sparkling wine! We chose the breakfast-only Plan, and the sea bream rice breakfast was incredibly luxurious! The Room is also spacious and lovely. I’d love to stay again. It would be great if a few of the showers had ReFa-style showerheads as well.

    A bit disappointing.

    We stayed here on the third night of our trip. The Room was very spacious (12 tatami mats) and had two sinks, which was great. The food was also excellent, and everything at breakfast was handmade—you can really feel the head chef’s attention to detail. Because many Reviews said it was good, we chose the continuously flowing hinoki indoor bath. The water quality was wonderful; my skin felt smooth, and I warmed up from the core—it felt amazing. However, unlike the photos, the bathroom window is positioned high up, so you can’t see any scenery at all. The window also seemed stiff as if it hadn’t been used and only opened a little. The other window wouldn’t open at all. Since I had been wondering about it the whole time, I asked at the front desk, and it seems the Hotel mixed up the mountain-side and river-side… Then at breakfast, the front desk staff member in charge said they changed it because the river side has a better view… If they were going to change it, they should have told us at check-in. And even if they say the river side has a better view, our Room was on the 4th floor, so what we could actually see from the window was just a privacy fence. My child enjoyed it, but since I carefully selected this Hotel for our Reservation, I’m very disappointed.

    Feel the breeze of Shonai

    We stayed here as a group of four, including a couple of friends in their 60s. 　The parking attendant, the front desk staff, and the dining staff all greeted us properly and left a very good impression. 　I was born in Tsuruoka City and lived there until I was 11. The polite and gentle hospitality of the Shonai people is truly comforting. 　The meals were delicious, and everyone was especially impressed by the sea bream ochazuke at breakfast. 　Shonai needs Bankokuya. We will definitely stay again. Please keep up the great work.

    The food was delicious, and the Accommodation was full of warm hospitality!

    I was extremely satisfied with this wonderful Ryokan! I flew to Yamagata from far away and then traveled by train. Since I can’t drive, I requested the Shuttle Service, but after waking up at 4 a.m. and sightseeing all day, I dozed off and accidentally passed Atsumi Onsen Station. Luckily there was a return train, which saved me—but it still would have taken about 30 minutes, so I hurriedly called to cancel and asked the shuttle car to head back. Even so, they kindly waited for me outside in the summer heat, and I ended up accepting their generosity. Thank you so much. The hospitality was outstanding; everyone greeted me with a smile at check-in and during meals, and I had a very comfortable stay. The Onsen were also fantastic—there are four spacious large public baths that rotate between men’s and women’s use! After relaxing in the indoor bath, I planned to go to the outdoor bath at night, but there were lots of large insects along the corridor… As someone who really can’t handle bugs, I had to give up on that part, which is my only regret. I thought maybe I should have gone before it got dark… but then again, horseflies during the day are scary too. Maybe winter would have fewer insects? I tried again in the morning with some courage, but there was a big bee or horsefly flying around in the changing area. Panicking (and terrified), I rushed into the bath—only to be swarmed by horseflies outside as well—so I escaped after about 10 seconds. Such a shame. I wondered if calling the front desk would mean they could take care of it, but it felt like overreacting over “just bugs,” so I didn’t call in the end. Still, thinking about other guests afterward, maybe I should have said something… At another mountain Ryokan before, they had a notice saying they would remove insects if you called; having something like that would make it easier to contact staff. (That is only if such support is available.) The indoor baths were perfect: a spacious changing room plus plenty of washing stations and sinks—so comfortable! The sauna facilities were also excellent. The meals were amazing as well: many delicate Japanese dishes with beautifully flavored dashi broth. Being able to eat slowly in a private dining room was another highlight. I ate too much seafood elsewhere for lunch and couldn’t finish everything (sorry!), but that just shows how generous the portions are. If I’d arrived hungry enough, I'm sure I could have finished easily—I regret not pacing myself at lunch. The meat was tender and sweet; truly impressive. It may have been the best shabu-shabu beef I've ever had—I savored every bite.

    It was a wonderful accommodation!

    From the moment you step inside, the lobby feels luxurious. The lounge offers complimentary drinks, which was very relaxing after a long journey. We stayed in a Japanese-Western style room; it was very spacious, comfortable, and had a great mountain view. The large public bath includes an indoor bath, an open-air bath, and a sauna. The water temperature was just right, and everything was clean and well maintained. Dinner tasted great and was the perfect portion size for women as well. The sea bream chazuke at breakfast was outstanding! It was a wonderful stay—this level of satisfaction at this price is hard to find. We would love to visit again.

    Awesome!!

    We stayed here with a total of 12 people, including my parents and my sister’s family. The Onsen and the Room were both clean and very comfortable. The meals were also delicious, and I was especially happy to see my mother enjoy them. Yamagata Prefecture is where my mother’s family is from, and I have visited many times since childhood. Wherever you go, you can enjoy Onsen, great food, skiing in winter, and warm hospitality—it’s one of my favorite places. Next time, I’d love to come again with the family members who couldn’t join us this time. Thank you very much.

    Unmemorable

    I stayed at Bankokuya. The property had a calm atmosphere, and the staff were courteous. I had no particular complaints about the meals or the Onsen, but overall nothing stood out as especially memorable. I was able to relax and felt it was a safe, straightforward stay.

    The in-room hot spring bath with free-flowing natural spring water was great.

    Since it was a Room-assigned-at-check-in Reservation, I was worried about what kind of Room we would get, but it turned out to be a spacious corner Room with a private bath fed by free-flowing hot spring water, and we were very satisfied. The meals were generous in portion size—perhaps a bit much for some women, but just right for men. The staff were pleasant and attentive, and overall it was an Accommodation with great value for money.

    A comfortable accommodation with delicious meals

    We stayed for one night. The meals were truly delicious. In the lounge, various soft drinks were available until midnight, and although at set times, there were also services such as shaved ice. We were also happy that we could use the massage service at a reasonable price. The relaxing bamboo light space was wonderful, and it was great to be able to borrow a lantern and go for a walk. The large public bath was clean and nice as well, but it would be perfect if the hair dryers were upgraded. lol

    Not only are the Facilities and cuisine excellent, but the proprietress is wonderful as well.

    Second visit We stayed for two nights since we came from far away. My mother wanted to see the proprietress again, so we chose this place once more. For this price, we almost feel sorry—such wonderful meals, facilities, and staff. On top of that, our conversations with the proprietress enrich our hearts. Times have changed, and even at expensive properties you rarely see a proprietress anymore; everything can feel a bit superficial these days. But this is truly an Onsen where you’re glad from the bottom of your heart that you came. We woke up at 4 a.m., took a flight, and then drove here—it’s tough, but it’s worth the trip. If my mother is still doing well, we will visit again next year. Thank you very much.

    Atsumi is a well-kno...

    Atsumi is a well-known nearby Onsen town, and this was a return visit for us. Before writing about the Accommodation, I felt that this Onsen town needs fundamental reform in order to survive into the future; as it is now, it has little prospect going forward. The Accommodation is also a once-famous Ryokan, but you should not expect a luxury stay here. The meals as well feel geared entirely toward group tours. Overall, it came across as something left behind from the past.

    The futons are fluffy and comfortable.

    First, the floor cushions are so fluffy it’s almost funny—you can sink right into them. The futon bedding is also wonderfully plush, and I felt truly rested. The meals are superb; personally, I especially enjoyed the dobin-mushi and their original sake.

    Nothing less than impressive.

    The bath was wonderful, and the service was excellent. We simply enjoyed ourselves, relaxed, and went home feeling refreshed. My daughter said she wants to come again (lol).

    Room with no view from the window

    The Accommodation was nice. There was a traditional inn manager, and the food was delicious. The large bath was so-so, but it wasn’t crowded, so it was comfortable. It was a Room with a ceramic open-air bath. I felt the water in the in-room open-air bath was the best. However, one very disappointing thing was that there was absolutely no view from the Room. It cost just over 30,000 yen per person. I believe there was wording like “a great deal right now.” With an open-air bath included, it did seem like a good deal—but you can’t see any scenery from the window (only the tiled roof of the neighboring building). If that’s why it’s cheaper, it should be clearly stated. It didn’t seem that busy, so it doesn’t look like this was the only Room available—though I didn’t confirm. If there had been an explanation that there is no view, I would not have chosen this Room. This happened before on IKYU at an Accommodation said to be high-end, and I stopped using it for a while because of that. The Accommodation itself was good, which makes this especially disappointing. I don’t know whether this is an issue with the Accommodation or IKYU, but I hope it will be improved.

    This is my favorite ...

    This is my favorite Accommodation, which I have stayed at several times over the past 30 years or so. As always, the service was very attentive from arrival to departure. The meals were delicious. Since the Room had a private indoor hinoki bath with free-flowing natural Onsen water, I was able to enjoy the Onsen many times right in the Room. It was a relaxing and truly luxurious time. Thank you very much!

    It was absolutely wonderful.

    We stayed here for my wife’s birthday. The Onsen was just the right temperature, and we really enjoyed the sauna as well. As a sauna lover, I was very satisfied. The Room was spotless and well maintained, and we could feel the thoughtful touches in the Room. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious.
