It was amazing!
This was my first stay at Atsumi Onsen, at Bankokuya. It was an Accommodation with thoughtful attention to detail in every respect. Even though it’s such a large place, there are fresh flowers everywhere. It really made me feel that care is taken in even the smallest things. Even the outdoor covered walkway space beside the entrance was beautifully maintained. After dinner we took a short stroll along the river (the riverside path is lit up at night and has a wonderful atmosphere), and we were able to relax for a moment in that walkway area. When you look back, you can see inside through the large windows, and the warm lighting creates such an inviting ambiance that makes you want to stay there. The Room we stayed in had a private bath with free-flowing natural hot spring water, and it felt incredible... So much so that I thought it was worth coming just for this indoor bath alone. Maybe it’s because it’s free-flowing from the source—the water just feels like your body is truly enjoying it. The moment you get in, you can’t help but sigh with relief. I was already completely satisfied with just the in-room bath, but the large public bath was also wonderful—the corridor leading there builds excitement, and I loved touches like partitioned spaces in the hair-dryer room using fabric dividers. In any case, even if you only focus on bathing, there never seems to be enough time. It honestly made me wish I had checked in earlier so I could enjoy nothing but baths. And then there’s the food—absolutely delicious. Hot dishes were served hot and cold dishes cold, with perfect timing throughout. The portions were far more than what we usually eat, yet everything tasted so good that we finished it all anyway. I think most men would find it more than satisfying in quantity as well. My friend and I did say it would be nice if there were menu options for women or lighter eaters too. For breakfast we thought we might not be able to eat much because we still felt full from dinner... but the sea bream rice was so good that both of us ended up getting seconds. Most of all, their hospitality was excellent. As an aside: my friend and I are hard of hearing, and they accommodated us very thoughtfully—even providing handwritten communication at our dining table. I’m grateful for having found such a wonderful Accommodation by chance, and I’d love to visit again. Thank you very much.

A relaxing Accommodation with luxurious cuisine and infinity chairs!
There are four bath areas, and two of them even have infinity chairs! The cold-water bath is continuously flowing—it's not ice-cold, but it’s pleasantly refreshing. Diamond members receive a welcome drink of sparkling wine! We chose the breakfast-only Plan, and the sea bream rice breakfast was incredibly luxurious! The Room is also spacious and lovely. I’d love to stay again. It would be great if a few of the showers had ReFa-style showerheads as well.

A bit disappointing.
We stayed here on the third night of our trip. The Room was very spacious (12 tatami mats) and had two sinks, which was great. The food was also excellent, and everything at breakfast was handmade—you can really feel the head chef’s attention to detail. Because many Reviews said it was good, we chose the continuously flowing hinoki indoor bath. The water quality was wonderful; my skin felt smooth, and I warmed up from the core—it felt amazing. However, unlike the photos, the bathroom window is positioned high up, so you can’t see any scenery at all. The window also seemed stiff as if it hadn’t been used and only opened a little. The other window wouldn’t open at all. Since I had been wondering about it the whole time, I asked at the front desk, and it seems the Hotel mixed up the mountain-side and river-side… Then at breakfast, the front desk staff member in charge said they changed it because the river side has a better view… If they were going to change it, they should have told us at check-in. And even if they say the river side has a better view, our Room was on the 4th floor, so what we could actually see from the window was just a privacy fence. My child enjoyed it, but since I carefully selected this Hotel for our Reservation, I’m very disappointed.

Feel the breeze of Shonai
We stayed here as a group of four, including a couple of friends in their 60s. The parking attendant, the front desk staff, and the dining staff all greeted us properly and left a very good impression. I was born in Tsuruoka City and lived there until I was 11. The polite and gentle hospitality of the Shonai people is truly comforting. The meals were delicious, and everyone was especially impressed by the sea bream ochazuke at breakfast. Shonai needs Bankokuya. We will definitely stay again. Please keep up the great work.

The food was delicious, and the Accommodation was full of warm hospitality!
I was extremely satisfied with this wonderful Ryokan! I flew to Yamagata from far away and then traveled by train. Since I can’t drive, I requested the Shuttle Service, but after waking up at 4 a.m. and sightseeing all day, I dozed off and accidentally passed Atsumi Onsen Station. Luckily there was a return train, which saved me—but it still would have taken about 30 minutes, so I hurriedly called to cancel and asked the shuttle car to head back. Even so, they kindly waited for me outside in the summer heat, and I ended up accepting their generosity. Thank you so much. The hospitality was outstanding; everyone greeted me with a smile at check-in and during meals, and I had a very comfortable stay. The Onsen were also fantastic—there are four spacious large public baths that rotate between men’s and women’s use! After relaxing in the indoor bath, I planned to go to the outdoor bath at night, but there were lots of large insects along the corridor… As someone who really can’t handle bugs, I had to give up on that part, which is my only regret. I thought maybe I should have gone before it got dark… but then again, horseflies during the day are scary too. Maybe winter would have fewer insects? I tried again in the morning with some courage, but there was a big bee or horsefly flying around in the changing area. Panicking (and terrified), I rushed into the bath—only to be swarmed by horseflies outside as well—so I escaped after about 10 seconds. Such a shame. I wondered if calling the front desk would mean they could take care of it, but it felt like overreacting over “just bugs,” so I didn’t call in the end. Still, thinking about other guests afterward, maybe I should have said something… At another mountain Ryokan before, they had a notice saying they would remove insects if you called; having something like that would make it easier to contact staff. (That is only if such support is available.) The indoor baths were perfect: a spacious changing room plus plenty of washing stations and sinks—so comfortable! The sauna facilities were also excellent. The meals were amazing as well: many delicate Japanese dishes with beautifully flavored dashi broth. Being able to eat slowly in a private dining room was another highlight. I ate too much seafood elsewhere for lunch and couldn’t finish everything (sorry!), but that just shows how generous the portions are. If I’d arrived hungry enough, I'm sure I could have finished easily—I regret not pacing myself at lunch. The meat was tender and sweet; truly impressive. It may have been the best shabu-shabu beef I've ever had—I savored every bite.

It was a wonderful accommodation!
From the moment you step inside, the lobby feels luxurious. The lounge offers complimentary drinks, which was very relaxing after a long journey. We stayed in a Japanese-Western style room; it was very spacious, comfortable, and had a great mountain view. The large public bath includes an indoor bath, an open-air bath, and a sauna. The water temperature was just right, and everything was clean and well maintained. Dinner tasted great and was the perfect portion size for women as well. The sea bream chazuke at breakfast was outstanding! It was a wonderful stay—this level of satisfaction at this price is hard to find. We would love to visit again.

Awesome!!
We stayed here with a total of 12 people, including my parents and my sister’s family. The Onsen and the Room were both clean and very comfortable. The meals were also delicious, and I was especially happy to see my mother enjoy them. Yamagata Prefecture is where my mother’s family is from, and I have visited many times since childhood. Wherever you go, you can enjoy Onsen, great food, skiing in winter, and warm hospitality—it’s one of my favorite places. Next time, I’d love to come again with the family members who couldn’t join us this time. Thank you very much.

Unmemorable
I stayed at Bankokuya. The property had a calm atmosphere, and the staff were courteous. I had no particular complaints about the meals or the Onsen, but overall nothing stood out as especially memorable. I was able to relax and felt it was a safe, straightforward stay.

The in-room hot spring bath with free-flowing natural spring water was great.
Since it was a Room-assigned-at-check-in Reservation, I was worried about what kind of Room we would get, but it turned out to be a spacious corner Room with a private bath fed by free-flowing hot spring water, and we were very satisfied. The meals were generous in portion size—perhaps a bit much for some women, but just right for men. The staff were pleasant and attentive, and overall it was an Accommodation with great value for money.

A comfortable accommodation with delicious meals
We stayed for one night. The meals were truly delicious. In the lounge, various soft drinks were available until midnight, and although at set times, there were also services such as shaved ice. We were also happy that we could use the massage service at a reasonable price. The relaxing bamboo light space was wonderful, and it was great to be able to borrow a lantern and go for a walk. The large public bath was clean and nice as well, but it would be perfect if the hair dryers were upgraded. lol

Not only are the Facilities and cuisine excellent, but the proprietress is wonderful as well.
Second visit We stayed for two nights since we came from far away. My mother wanted to see the proprietress again, so we chose this place once more. For this price, we almost feel sorry—such wonderful meals, facilities, and staff. On top of that, our conversations with the proprietress enrich our hearts. Times have changed, and even at expensive properties you rarely see a proprietress anymore; everything can feel a bit superficial these days. But this is truly an Onsen where you’re glad from the bottom of your heart that you came. We woke up at 4 a.m., took a flight, and then drove here—it’s tough, but it’s worth the trip. If my mother is still doing well, we will visit again next year. Thank you very much.

Atsumi is a well-kno...
Atsumi is a well-known nearby Onsen town, and this was a return visit for us. Before writing about the Accommodation, I felt that this Onsen town needs fundamental reform in order to survive into the future; as it is now, it has little prospect going forward. The Accommodation is also a once-famous Ryokan, but you should not expect a luxury stay here. The meals as well feel geared entirely toward group tours. Overall, it came across as something left behind from the past.

The futons are fluffy and comfortable.
First, the floor cushions are so fluffy it’s almost funny—you can sink right into them. The futon bedding is also wonderfully plush, and I felt truly rested. The meals are superb; personally, I especially enjoyed the dobin-mushi and their original sake.

Room with no view from the window
The Accommodation was nice. There was a traditional inn manager, and the food was delicious. The large bath was so-so, but it wasn’t crowded, so it was comfortable. It was a Room with a ceramic open-air bath. I felt the water in the in-room open-air bath was the best. However, one very disappointing thing was that there was absolutely no view from the Room. It cost just over 30,000 yen per person. I believe there was wording like “a great deal right now.” With an open-air bath included, it did seem like a good deal—but you can’t see any scenery from the window (only the tiled roof of the neighboring building). If that’s why it’s cheaper, it should be clearly stated. It didn’t seem that busy, so it doesn’t look like this was the only Room available—though I didn’t confirm. If there had been an explanation that there is no view, I would not have chosen this Room. This happened before on IKYU at an Accommodation said to be high-end, and I stopped using it for a while because of that. The Accommodation itself was good, which makes this especially disappointing. I don’t know whether this is an issue with the Accommodation or IKYU, but I hope it will be improved.

This is my favorite ...
This is my favorite Accommodation, which I have stayed at several times over the past 30 years or so. As always, the service was very attentive from arrival to departure. The meals were delicious. Since the Room had a private indoor hinoki bath with free-flowing natural Onsen water, I was able to enjoy the Onsen many times right in the Room. It was a relaxing and truly luxurious time. Thank you very much!

It was absolutely wonderful.
We stayed here for my wife’s birthday. The Onsen was just the right temperature, and we really enjoyed the sauna as well. As a sauna lover, I was very satisfied. The Room was spotless and well maintained, and we could feel the thoughtful touches in the Room. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. Our whole family had a wonderful time and made great memories. Thank you very much. We sincerely support the continued success of Bankokuya.

Even though it was before checkout, the cleaning staff entered without permission…
Late check-out was included as an IKYU Diamond Member benefit. Although there was no specific 안내 at check-in, we did receive the one-drink service at dinner, so I assumed the benefit was being applied and stayed in the Room. There was no contact from the front desk, and just as I was getting ready to leave because it was almost time, I heard housekeeping staff talking right outside the door. I had a bad feeling—and then they unlocked the door and entered without knocking. The man who came in only said “Oh,” and left immediately. Mistakes happen, but at least a brief apology would have been appropriate. There was also no mention of this at checkout; everything proceeded as usual. Both the front desk and restaurant staff were pleasant, and aside from some dated Facilities in the Room, my overall impression had been good—so this incident right at the end suddenly turned it negative. If late check-out cannot be properly managed, it might be better to discontinue that perk and instead offer something like a small souvenir or an extra dish at dinner. Upgrading dinner was definitely the right choice. I couldn’t find any reference image for the sashimi and was worried, but it turned out to be very lavish. However, everything other than the sashimi felt less impressive—overall rather modest. The first half with sashimi felt luxurious, but while there were many items afterward, it still left me wanting more. The pie stew also felt out of place on the menu and threw off the balance. And while the sashimi itself was excellent, verbal explanations of each fish are easy to forget—having a simple printed note would have been helpful. The sea bream rice for breakfast was excellent, and being able to get refills was great. The parking area on this side of the river (the side closer to the Accommodation) may be nearer in distance, but it is covered with fallen leaves and branches from trees on a slope above it—and likely because many birds perch there as well, cars end up splattered with droppings. In that condition, parking across the river might have been better. It was very windy so perhaps unavoidable, but is there really nothing that can be done? Overall it wasn’t bad, but there were quite a few areas that could be improved—so considering the price point, my impression is mixed.

The meals are amazing!
The meals were very generous in portion size, and everything tasted excellent. The indoor bath and the open-air bath were both spacious and enjoyable, but I’m giving 3 stars because the men’s open-air bath was small. At the souvenir shop, there were many tasting samples, which was great because I could try items before buying. All of the staff were kind, and overall I was more than satisfied for the price.

Satisfied.
I like relatively large Onsen Ryokan and Hotels, and this one was no exception. The lobby was spacious, the amenities were well stocked, and everything was clean and comfortable. The meals were so good I found myself thinking, “This much quality for this price?” The sea bream rice at breakfast in particular was outstanding. The baths were a convenient size—not too big or too small. Above all, I appreciated that there were very few inbound travelers. Places where Japanese guests can relax and enjoy domestic travel at a leisurely pace are becoming increasingly rare.

I was truly impressed.
During dinner at the Accommodation, we received sudden news that my mother was in critical condition, so we hurriedly checked out and headed to the hospital. Sadly, she passed away on the way. We then had to leave the hospital as well, and when we contacted the Accommodation again, they kindly welcomed us back, which truly helped us. At breakfast the next morning, they even prepared a meal setting for my mother, and I was deeply moved by their thoughtfulness. It was an Accommodation with truly wonderful hospitality.

The hot spring was great, but the meals were disappointing.
Both the outdoor Onsen and the in-Room Onsen were good. We stayed here based on its reputation for “delicious meals,” but it was disappointing. The Room also felt quite worn and did not match the price.

The service was excellent, but the food did not meet expectations.
The service was excellent, and many of the staff were very courteous. When we asked about sightseeing spots, they responded in detail, which made our trip go smoothly. This time we stayed in a special Room on the top floor with an open-air bath; it was 34,750 yen per person per night, and there were five of us for two nights. It felt as though this rate was mostly for the Room itself. Dinner on the first night was very average. The most disappointing part was that the simmered fish and grilled fish at both dinner and breakfast were hard and dried out. In addition, as soon as we sat down we were asked something like, “May I light the shabu-shabu?” On both nights, dinner started in a rushed way: the main dish heated up first while we hurried through the shabu-shabu and tried to eat the appetizers at the same time. We didn’t have time to focus on enjoying it, and while watching each other’s pots so they wouldn’t go out, the fuel ran out as expected—so we had to call staff over and explain each time. I felt it would be better if you provided a lighter so guests could proceed at their own pace. Breakfast on the second day had items like yudofu tofu hot pot and grilled salmon as mains, but they were cold and hard. The side dishes—especially kinpira—tasted like something from a large commercial bag. Since yudofu and grilled salmon are easy to eat at home anyway, it felt rather bland for guests on a Multiple Night Stay. The sesame sauce for the Thai-style ochazuke at breakfast on the first day tasted unusual rather than fresh-ground sesame. Sukiyaki at dinner on the second night also had a sesame-sauce flavor; I wanted standard sukiyaki instead. Even if there are some standout dishes, if others feel careless or poorly prepared, that impression becomes stronger. It may be true that paying more would improve things—but spending 34,750 yen per night only to be served cold, hardened fish both morning and night, with meals that feel rushed throughout is disappointing. Also regarding bedding: we were told to look at our Room layout and call reception about where to lay out futons. We called asking for them to be set up in the 6-tatami Japanese-style room; however when we returned from dinner they had been laid out in what seemed like a large hall (about 12 tatami). We then had to move the low table and chairs ourselves. Lastly, although there was an open-air bath attached to our Room (which is appreciated), it was too hot to enter; when I lowered the temperature setting by three notches for use later/next day preparation purposes , it became too cold to use that evening. It was difficult to adjust properly.

All Facility amenities are well maintained.
My wife and I stayed here from April 25 to 26. Since deciding to sell our vacation home and resort condo and stay at a different Onsen Accommodation each month, this was our fifth stay—and it was the most consistently satisfying of them all. There was nothing to complain about. It’s over 500 km one way from our home, but with no traffic jams it felt closer than expected. The Tomei, Chuo, and Kan-Etsu expressways are usually heavily congested and exhausting. Yamagata Prefecture has lots of great ramen. Last time we had Yonezawa spicy miso ramen, and this time we tried Konpiraso ramen. We waited two and a half hours, but the ocean view from the shop was beautiful and it became a memorable trip. The large public baths are on the 1st and 3rd floors; both have saunas (self löyly), and the cold bath temperature was just right—perfect for fully unwinding. Amenities included shaving foam as well. The massage chairs can be used free of charge. There is also a relaxation service at reasonable prices, which I recommend. In any case, the building is spacious with many places to relax. Coffee and soft drinks were all-you-can-drink. The shop had plenty of souvenirs, and I was surprised by how many samples were available. All staff members were professional in their mannerisms, so we could ask for various things with confidence. They are connected via intercoms, and their teamwork is excellent. The meals struck an exquisite balance in both taste and portion size—we were very satisfied. For breakfast, the sea bream chazuke was made by topping sea bream rice with slices of sea bream sashimi, then pouring over broth made from roasted sea bream bones. It was outstanding—the fish was fluffy-textured and very delicious. There are multiple EV charging stations available; you can use them for 800 yen until checkout the next day. They also provide sheet masks you can use while soaking in the Onsen; they seem highly moisturizing thanks to the hot spring minerals, which made my wife happy. It’s a bit far away for us, but it’s an Accommodation we’d love to visit again. Thank you very much.

We stayed at this Accommodation for a three-generation girls’ trip. From check-in, the wonderful staff made us feel at ease, and the Room was spotless—everyone couldn’t stop smiling. The meals, both dinner and breakfast, had such gentle flavors; everything was delicious and made us truly happy. The pudding served at dinner on the first night was outstanding—I wanted to eat it again and again. The Onsen was also excellent, especially the open-air bath and sauna on the first floor. At check-out, I’ll never forget the proprietress’s smile. We’re truly grateful that she kindly took photos with my daughter. It became a wonderful memory.
