We’re sorry to hear you were disappointed.
When I applied, I asked questions but never received an email reply, so I couldn’t plan in advance. When I arrived at the Hotel on the Shuttle Service bus, there were only two or three check-in counters. With dozens of people waiting in line, that was unacceptable. I stood aside without lining up. I spoke to a female staff member nearby (in a dress), but she ignored me—twice. Her attitude clearly changed when familiar guests arrived. Disgusting. It took 30 minutes to complete check-in—my first time experiencing anything like this. Even large Hotels that are cheaper don’t operate this way. Regarding what I asked by email and never got an answer to: there is an 11:00 checkout and a 13:00 Shuttle Service bus, so I asked again for suggestions on how to spend the time in between. While looking at a map, I also asked about how to allocate our time. We left our luggage in the Room and walked a bit, but the timing guidance was completely off. They made a big show of saying they upgraded our Room, but the guest room had peeling wallpaper and other issues that could have been fixed with minimal attention—very disappointing. The meals were good overall. We chose this Accommodation because we wanted to avoid a buffet, and that part was worth it—although there were still issues (for example, one of two slices of sashimi was scraps). What felt pleasant was the foreign staff: polite service, working hard even if they still need practice carrying plates, and they had properly learned things well enough to explain in their own words. The chefs’ smiles when welcoming us also made us feel good when leaving. As for the bath area, I understand repairs are being done, but surely there are better ways to conceal them… The toothbrush in the Room was far too hard—I wonder how old it was. Breakfast quality is questionable for a Hotel. Some plates were dirty; even when I discreetly informed staff and handed them over, their reaction felt like “so what,” as if they already knew. The pork shabu-shabu ingredients were added on-site from what looked like supermarket packaging—a foam tray—and it seemed there were other similar items as well. The basics are not being handled properly. The only Hotel staff who showed genuine hospitality were those at the night restaurant and housekeeping. A female staff member near the corridor by the bathroom greeted us with a smile. I travel frequently for both work and personal reasons, and this was by far the worst experience in recent years. Is it really appropriate for IKYU to list this? As for photos of these issues: although I took some pictures of good points as well, I will refrain from posting them.

Use Hakukaga and Gosho Beni.
We stayed in a spacious Room with a special feel. It was clean, beautiful, and very comfortable. Fresh flowers were arranged throughout, and the cleaning was thorough. Dinner at “Omoinomama” was extremely satisfying—though for a woman in her 50s, the portions were a bit too large and I couldn’t finish everything within the allotted time… haha. It seemed like there may be an assigned attendant system; one staff member consistently came at just the right times to provide service. Drinks are ordered via smartphone, but they also took orders verbally, which was appreciated. The bath was spacious and the water temperature was perfect. There was also a hinoki cypress bath in the Room; I used it as well and found the scent very soothing. The only disappointment was that the coffee at the breakfast venue didn’t taste good. I have stayed here about three times before, but this was the first time I felt it wasn’t good at all. Since we were traveling with guests from far away, one of them even asked, “Is it over-brewed?” which was unfortunate. I also noticed that while some staff members were excellent, others seemed unmotivated. I’m leaving this Review in hopes that it will become an even better Accommodation.

I would like to stay again.
I usually don't drink alcohol. With plenty of food provided, I was full and even refrained from soft drinks. Still, the attentive service was appreciated, as tea was prepared for me multiple times. The meals were also very delicious. The Onsen was spacious with excellent hot water.

It's like a department store of baths!
The onsen, meals, and room were all wonderful. After returning from dinner, we found roasted green tea and cold water prepared for us. The service at this traditional ryokan was excellent, including the welcome drink service in the lounge. We arrived via a shuttle bus from Sendai and had to head to Dotore immediately. The female staff at the reception efficiently took care of our luggage, allowing us to make it in time for our reservation. We truly appreciated it. I had written more details initially, but they were lost due to time constraints, so I am resending it like this.

Both dinner and breakfast are plentiful.
Both dinner and breakfast were excellent. Especially for breakfast, everyone was enjoying the kamameshi, so I tried it too, and it was delicious. There are limited power outlets in the guest rooms, so if staying with three or more people, bringing a mobile battery is recommended. There is only one vending machine on the first floor; having vending machines or ice makers on each floor would be helpful.

Room Cleaning
The number of amenities was incorrect, dust had accumulated, the bath chair was stained, and I felt disappointed as soon as I entered... Even after spending 30,000 yen, it was unfortunate that I couldn't expect a normal experience. I had high expectations since it's the famous Akiu Onsen. Although the response from the front desk was quick, I wanted to relax but ended up feeling exhausted right from the start. First impressions are crucial after all.

Onsen trip with my daughter
The room had new tatami mats, providing a calm and relaxing atmosphere. It would have been better without the step near the window. Jinbei might be more comfortable to move in than yukata if possible. Dinner was a warm course meal, very delicious, and the service was excellent. The Onsen was absolutely satisfying.

Hospitality was evident throughout!
The design of the building was stunning. Especially, the entrance to the room created a sense of privacy, making me feel luxurious from the moment I arrived in the room. The toothbrush handle was easy to use, showing attention to detail and making me think how kind and considerate the staff must be. The bath was also exceptional. Staying at this accommodation for just one day felt like a bath-themed trip in itself. During meals, the staff's polite and gentle manner made me feel relaxed. Breakfast offered so many delicious options that I wished my stomach had more capacity! Upon departure, the staff lined up with smiles to see us off warmly. Please continue preserving this wonderful accommodation with care! Thank you very much!

The Grandeur of the Showa Era - Excellent!
From the entrance to the large public bath, the expansive pond evoked a sense of relaxation reminiscent of the Showa era. The sound of the water was refreshing and soothing. The atmosphere was wonderful, and the sight of the dinner spread left us in awe. Each dish was elegantly flavored and delicious. The lineup of fish dishes, such as kinmedai and katsuo tataki, along with meat dishes like steak, all looked so appetizing that we wished we could try two or three of each. The conversation flowed, and we decided to head to a bar afterward, but unfortunately, there was no bar available. Instead, we enjoyed drinks at an izakaya. The bath was large, dynamic, and clean, with koi swimming nearby, which made it enjoyable. If I had to point out a downside, it would be that the staff seemed generally formal and lacked smiles, making them a bit unapproachable. Since it’s such a great Hotel, it would be even better if the staff could create a more cheerful and welcoming atmosphere with smiles.

I had a relaxing stay.
I stayed with my daughter's family. Although I couldn't Change the Reservation on the reservation site, the Accommodation kindly assisted when I inquired directly. Thank you very much. We thoroughly enjoyed both the meals and the open-air bath. The only disappointment was that the bottle of wine was not chilled.

More than worth the price!
The free shuttle service schedule is thoughtfully arranged to match the check-in and check-out times, which is fantastic! Have you ever felt disappointed when a Ryokan's check-out time was 11:00 AM, but the shuttle bus left at 10:30 AM? Here, they’ve considered this. Check-out on departure day is at 11:00 AM, and the bus departs at 11:30 AM. On your return trip, even staff from a high-end affiliated Ryokan wave goodbye as you pass by on the bus. For a "Showa-era large-scale Ryokan" in this price range with two meals included, it’s becoming rare to find places where futons are not already laid out upon arrival. However, here they prepare your futon and replenish hot water and tea during meal times—a commendable effort given today’s labor shortages for accommodations of this scale and price range. The meals are delicious. We chose the standard dinner course served in a dining area and were fully satisfied. For those opting for higher-priced courses, there’s another restaurant where dishes are freshly prepared in an open kitchen after ordering. When we visited that restaurant for a look around, both the hall staff and chefs greeted us warmly with smiles—leaving us with a great impression! Additionally, this Ryokan Hotel offers delightful sweets such as their homemade cream puffs or plum treats placed in guest rooms—truly impressive. Throughout the facility are stunning artworks like folding screens by renowned Japanese painters associated with Tohoku. These evoke nostalgia for Japan's golden era of Onsen Ryokans during Showa times. Moreover, Akiu Onsen town itself retains its charm as an authentic Onsen destination rather than being surrounded by residential areas or bed towns. Various Onsen accommodations remain vibrant here! Just a convenient 40-minute mini-trip from Sendai Station via free shuttle service—it’s wonderful!

This accommodation i...
This accommodation is not highly recommended for those seeking a quiet and relaxing stay. It is more suitable for families with children or large groups looking to have fun together. In fact, many families visiting with their grandchildren were observed. Some concerns include the room door design, which made it difficult to enter and exit, as well as bird droppings on the windows, giving an impression that cleaning was not fully maintained. Additionally, there was a young boy of elementary school age in the women's bath area, which was surprising. Since girls of a similar age were also using the facility at that time, some guests might find this uncomfortable. These issues should be addressed carefully by the ryokan. On a positive note, the service and greetings provided by foreign staff during dinner were very polite and left a great impression.

Unfortunately.
The exterior and rooms showed noticeable aging, giving the impression that the Hotel hasn't changed much since the Showa era. I was truly shocked to be assigned a smoky room despite reserving a non-smoking Room. Did they make a mistake with my Reservation? There was even a "Non-Smoking Room" sign in the Room... why? Doesn't housekeeping notice this? There was no guidance to our Room from staff, so we carried our luggage ourselves. Observing the worn-out appearance and interior on the way gave us an uneasy feeling, which turned into genuine disappointment upon arrival. Concerned about being blamed for smoking ourselves, we contacted the front desk immediately. A person who seemed to be in charge promptly arranged for us to Change the Reservation to another Room, which slightly improved our mood. Another disappointment was related to coffee—being a coffee lover, I found it unfortunate that there wasn’t any free service available. It wasn’t included in any welcome drink menu or provided in-room as drip coffee; nor was it offered during dinner service. The tea corner in the lobby also closed early... I even considered buying some at a nearby convenience store but learned outside food is not allowed here, so I gave up on that idea too. The mini-fridge in our Room was packed with paid items leaving no space for personal use—and it gets locked at 6 AM! Finally managed some coffee during breakfast next morning though. The bath experience felt relaxing while meals were enjoyable overall; however according to my companion their ordered whiskey water mix tasted surprisingly diluted. Given its distance along with these disappointments unfortunately we won’t consider revisiting again anytime soon!

Simple yet delightful accommodation with great meals and baths.
The meals were absolutely delicious! Both dinner and breakfast were carefully prepared, featuring healthy dishes that brought out the natural flavors of the ingredients. It felt nourishing for the body. The building seemed to have some history, but it was renovated, clean, and comfortable to stay in. The bath was very spacious, clean, and pleasant. Although there was a slight chlorine smell in the Onsen, it might be unavoidable these days... The simplicity and thoughtful organization created a cozy atmosphere that left a great impression. I would love to visit again if I have the chance!

Enjoy a variety of Onsen and a satisfying breakfast buffet.
During the Great East Japan Earthquake, when gas and water were unavailable in Izumi Ward, Sendai City, the Onsen was opened for use, and we were very grateful. The Onsen is spacious with a variety of bath types such as rock baths and pot baths, offering a relaxing experience with great views. However, there are no jet baths, waterfall showers, reclining baths, carbonated baths, or electric baths. Dinner features Japanese cuisine that enhances the natural flavors of the ingredients and is delicious. The breakfast buffet may not have anything particularly unique but is healthy and tasty; we recommend the beef tongue curry and kamameshi (rice cooked in an iron pot). This Hotel offers excellent value for its price.

Relaxed time
There were many types of baths, and I enjoyed them. The food was also delicious. However, when I went to eat udon around 10 PM, it was crowded, and it took 40 minutes for the food to come out, while others who ordered later were served first, which was disappointing. Still, the Accommodation Fee was reasonably priced, and there is a direct bus from Sendai Station. Also, the Hotel had a view of the courtyard, allowing for a relaxing time, so I would like to visit Mito-ya (Mitoya) again when I go to Akiu Onsen.

Three Great Onsen of Oshu
I had always wanted to visit Akiu Onsen. I had heard from people from Sendai that it was a good hotel, and I understood why from the moment I checked in. Despite its age, the facility was well-maintained, and the service was courteous, with satisfying meals. The onsen was truly worthy of being one of the three great onsens, and I was very soothed by the water and the onsen facility. Thank you very much.

It's too much.
Onsen was the only good thing. The evaluation on IKYU was not reliable. Even though there was an available parking lot nearby, we were guided to a distant parking lot by a microbus. When we went to the dinner venue, we were left waiting at the entrance, so we had to find a seat ourselves. The meal was terrible; the kamameshi was supposed to be served at the right time, but it never came, and the fried food was served after we finished everything else. It was absolutely awful. No coffee was provided after the meal. For breakfast, we went at the later time slot to ease congestion, but it was crowded, and finding a seat was difficult. It felt like a company cafeteria. We went with our family of five looking forward to it, but we will never go again. It felt like a waste.

The bath was amazing.
The large public bath was very nice. The changing room was clean, the temperature was just right, and the open-air bath was lovely, which made the whole family happy. I requested a 45-minute massage, and the person in charge was very skilled, spoke elegantly, and it was a healing experience. It relieved the fatigue from long-distance driving. However, the amenities were disappointing. Although there were yukatas, my wife shouted, "There's no comb in the room!" (laughs). We were able to get razors and hairbands at the front desk, and there was a dental care set, but we all had to go out the next day without combing our hair. Breakfast was a Japanese and Western buffet. The Western food selection was limited, and it seemed there was nothing for the kids to eat. Even though we paid a considerable amount, it didn't live up to it, and it was a bit disappointing.

Good value for money!
The buffet breakfast was delicious and could be enjoyed leisurely in a private room. There were many types of baths, and the open-air bath with a view of the waterfall and koi was relaxing. Although the water was colorless and transparent, it was very warming!
