    Views, Hot Springs, and Dining

We visited Gero Onsen for the first time as an anniversary trip. After being shown to our Room, the impact of stepping inside is still vividly etched in my memory. The breathtaking view—looking out through the large windows that span both sides of the guest room and taking in the entire Onsen town below—was truly incredible. We were genuinely moved. The advantages of being on higher ground are fully realized here, offering a perspective you likely won’t find elsewhere. The bedroom was spacious enough, the bed was very comfortable, and there was a well-sized sofa area. The bathroom facilities were clean and luxurious as well, and throughout our stay we felt consistently satisfied that we had chosen a high-quality Accommodation. For dinner, we enjoyed kaiseki cuisine in a private dining room—delightful both visually and in taste. The number of dishes and portion sizes were more than sufficient; everything was delicious, and we found ourselves enjoying plenty of drinks as well. We also truly appreciated that the cake we had requested separately was prepared in our Room during dinner. The lower floor connects to a sister Accommodation within the same group, so it was interesting to catch a glimpse of its atmosphere too—it felt like an unexpected bonus. On the reception lobby floor, there is a lounge with a calm ambiance and tasteful furnishings. A smoking area is also provided in one corner, which I appreciated as a smoker. I’ve visited various Onsen around Japan, but without question this water ranks among the very best for comfort. That said, while soaking in the men’s bath, I did feel the view was slightly lacking. According to my wife, however, there were absolutely no complaints about the view from the women’s bath. With only a few Rooms per floor and only a limited number of floors overall, it has an adult atmosphere far removed from any noisiness. We were also able to enjoy what felt like near-private use of the large public bath at times—an indulgent experience. Given how hot it was seasonally (late July), I wouldn’t have planned to walk anyway; however, one minor drawback may be that this hilltop location comes at some distance from central areas of town. I only felt this slightly because there happened to be a festival in town on our stay date. Even so, after checking out the next day we walked around once and enjoyed ourselves fully—so this is not at all to say that staying closer would be better. Gero Onsen had come up several times before as a potential destination for us; however, it’s somewhat far from Kansai so we hadn’t made it out until now. This time we decided to drive—and surprisingly it didn’t feel like an unreasonable schedule even including travel time round-trip—so our future travel options have expanded. Our first visit to Gero Onsen became extremely satisfying thanks to staying at “Shogetsu,” making it an excellent anniversary trip. Although this visit was in midsummer, we would definitely love to return again in another season.

    The Ultimate Relaxing Retreat

We stayed here for the first time on our wedding anniversary last year and loved it so much that we visited again for this year’s anniversary. The view from the Room was truly amazing. The food felt very summery, looked beautiful, and was absolutely delicious. It was very quiet, and we were able to relax and take our time. Thank you very much. The only thing that concerned me this time—though it may just be a matter of personal preference—was the smell as soon as we entered the Room. I thought it might have been potpourri placed in the hallway, but each time we walked through the hallway it smelled strange. We would like to visit again in autumn with my mother, and we are looking forward to it.

Gero’s hot spring water is gentle, and the food is delicious.

The water at Gero Onsen is clear, yet it leaves your skin feeling silky smooth. It was a little hot at first, but I quickly got used to it. Every dish was freshly prepared and truly delicious.

I’d love to stay here again.

The exterior looked a bit old at first, but once inside it was truly wonderful. The food was also very delicious. The view from our top-floor Room was amazing. I’m going to recommend it to my friends. This is an Accommodation I definitely want to stay at again.

    We had a relaxing stay.

It was a trip for two with my elderly mother. All the staff had wonderful smiles. Dinner was delicious, with carefully prepared dishes served one by one. The salt-grilled ayu in particular was outstanding. Although it rained, the view from our room was amazing, and my mother especially loved the chair by the window. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us.

    We had a relaxing stay.

My first time in Gero Onsen. Even though it’s in a neighboring prefecture, I hadn’t had the chance to visit until now, so I was really looking forward to this trip. The Onsen had a great view, and both dinner and breakfast were incredibly delicious—I was very satisfied. Needless to say, the view from the Room was wonderful, but personally I also loved the lounge atmosphere and the stone-paved walkway vibe leading to the restroom on the same floor (haha). All of the staff spoke kindly and it was very soothing. I hope I can come back again in autumn when the leaves are at their best.

    Unfortunately, it rained, but...

The road leading up to the Ryokan was surprisingly steep, but the service—from pick-up to check-in and welcome tea—was excellent. My wife was pregnant, and you were very accommodating in many ways; we truly appreciated your help. Thank you very much. The Onsen was wonderful! I went in three times.

Not crowded, so you can relax.

This Accommodation offers a calm, adults-only atmosphere, so it’s not crowded and you can relax at your own pace. You can also enjoy the baths and meals in a leisurely way. As it is located on higher ground, we were able to take in the wonderful views.

    Although it was the ...

Although it was the rainy season, the weather was fairly good, and the breathtaking feeling of being drawn in when I entered the Room was truly impressive. Good points Dinner was really delicious. The frog made from cucumber was unexpected, cute, and fun. Overall, the staff were pleasant. The bath area felt a bit small, but since there were few guests, it was relaxing. Disappointing points At breakfast, I felt the tsukudani-style items and fish were a bit too salty. The rice was delicious at both dinner and breakfast. It was disappointing that the final tea at both breakfast and dinner was hojicha. Hojicha is fine during the meal, but at the end I really wanted sencha. It was also disappointing that there was no fruit in either the morning or evening meals. After arrival, guidance only went as far as getting into the elevator; there was no escort to the Room. For an Accommodation with a fairly high price point... that’s what I thought. It felt like things ended abruptly. I’m not sure about visiting again.

A Mother-and-Daughter Getaway in Gero Onsen

I was finally able to stay at Shogetsu, something I had wished for over many years. The forecast turned out to be wrong, and we were blessed with good weather. It felt as if I might be able to see my father, who passed away last year, and I spent the early morning watching the clouds drifting by from this Hotel so close to the sky. Needless to say, the Onsen water quality was excellent—I soaked three times. Dinner in particular was outstanding: every seasonal ingredient I wanted to eat was included, and everything was delicious. My mother in her 80s finished every bite and seemed truly satisfied. I returned home to Osaka feeling happy that I could show her a little filial devotion. Thank you for your warm hospitality! Thank you very much.

    Spectacular views from the Room!

The service was excellent, and above all, I was truly impressed by the breathtaking view from the Room! However, it was disappointing that the bedroom floor creaked with every step, and the bed squeaked loudly whenever I turned over, waking me up several times.

We had a very satisfying family trip.

We were pleasantly surprised by how delicious the meals were. In particular, we saw that the rice was listed as No. 1 for something, and since we are from Niigata—famous for its rice—we honestly doubted it. But it really was excellent, and we went back for seconds many times at both breakfast and dinner. We kept saying that, out of all the Accommodations we have stayed at so far, this had the best food from start to finish. The Room was also clean with a great view—overall a truly wonderful Accommodation. Thank you very much.

    Thank you very much.

With our children grown and independent, this was our first trip as a couple. Wanting to relax in a slightly luxurious setting, we made a Reservation after referring to Reviews of this Accommodation. As a result, we were able to spend a truly relaxing and wonderful time. Our Room was on the 8th floor, and both the view and the meals were excellent. The bathwater was also very pleasant. The Facility’s exterior felt a bit dated, but the interior was completely different. The staff at the Accommodation who assisted us were also polite and kind. The accommodation cost is not cheap, but in these times of rising prices, I don’t think it is overpriced at all. Overall, I think it is an excellent Accommodation.

    Hospitality

Overall, it was very good. In particular, the alkaline simple hot spring had a pleasantly smooth feel and left my skin wonderfully moisturized after bathing. The food was well seasoned throughout, and the Hida beef was very tender and delicious. However, I was disappointed that upon arrival we were not escorted to the Room—only to the elevator—so there was no explanation provided in the Room. It feels like a shame that skipping just a brief five minutes of service can leave this kind of impression.

Everything was clean throughout, and I was amazed by the spectacular view from the Room. The breakfast and dinner were delicious, and the staff member in charge was courteous and made us feel comfortable. At check-in, there was no explanation that yukata-style loungewear was available in the Room, nor any information about the private open-air bath. It felt inconsistent compared with the service during meals.

    Highly satisfied

I had been wanting to stay here for a long time, and I was finally able to visit. Because it is located on a hill and has large picture windows, the view was even better than I imagined. The staff’s hospitality was outstanding and full of genuine care—everything was impeccable. What stood out most was the cuisine; even the white rice showed how carefully selected the ingredients are, and we could truly appreciate their quality. Both dinner and breakfast were extremely satisfying. My expectations for Gero Onsen—one of Japan’s three most famous hot springs—were perhaps too high, so the water quality wasn’t quite what I had imagined. However, the meals were exceptional—so much so that I want to return in another season to enjoy different dishes. Next time, I’d also love to see the fireworks, so I definitely hope to visit again. Thank you very much for taking such great care of us.

    We stayed here for o...

We stayed here for our wedding anniversary. We arrived by car, but the steep slope made the road very unsettling. Because our car has low ground clearance, the guidance signs were hard to see, and we had to turn at the last minute—it was a bit difficult. Once we arrived at the Accommodation, we were given a very polite explanation and guided to the elevator. After that, guests go to their Room on their own (which felt new). There was no opportunity to hand over a gratuity. The view from the Room was great. The windows were also nicely cleaned. Check-in was at 14:00, so we arrived early to enjoy the bath and scenery. When heading up to the bath floor, we entered through an entrance made of bamboo and it felt narrow. Bath towels and face towels were provided there, which was convenient. There was no sauna—only two baths: an indoor bath and an open-air bath. Since I had been expecting a bit more, that part was disappointing. After bathing, about three types of tea were available, but there were no chairs—so you have to drink standing up. There wasn’t a dedicated post-bath relaxation area. There were two massage chairs; they felt old and made squeaking noises. Since it still felt lacking, we went to the lounge as explained. Drinks were free, but only hot coffee and hot tea—always just those two options. While many Accommodations change what’s offered during the day/night/morning, this one did not (only lounge hours were set). The coffee was UCC capsule-style; I like coffee, so I found it quite underwhelming. Also, there was no after-breakfast coffee service. Every Accommodation is different, but not being able to enjoy good coffee may be one disappointing point for some guests. At dinner, both of our alcohol glasses smelled fishy. We asked if paper cups or plastic cups were available; they said none. They suggested it might be due to the dish dryer and brought hand-washed glasses instead and transferred our drinks—but it didn’t change. After that we didn’t mention it again. Personally, I think this kind of odor comes from bacterial buildup. We stay at many Accommodations, and quite a few have glasses with this kind of smell. However, some places handle it properly—for example at French restaurants/hotels they will replace glasses multiple times when asked—so I assume other guests have mentioned it before as well. Overall we didn’t come away with many good memories; it felt like an Accommodation where courteous service and less attentive aspects were mixed together.

    A Warm and Thoughtful Accommodation

We stayed here for a long-awaited family trip to celebrate my father’s retirement. All of the staff were warm and kind, showing thoughtful care and chatting with us in a friendly way. The lounge was a wonderful space; we checked in in the early afternoon, relaxed, took a bath, relaxed again—and ended up repeating that cycle. Each dish was delicious, and we loved the spring-inspired cuisine and beautiful tableware. Thanks to your many thoughtful touches, our whole family had a truly enjoyable time. Thank you very much.

    In-Room Open-Air Bath

Because I’m not comfortable with large public baths, I always make a Reservation for a Room with an open-air bath in the guest room at any Onsen. However, the open-air bath in this guest room had a strong chlorine smell. I was really looking forward to it, so it was very disappointing.

The bath, service, Room view, and meals were all excellent—amazing value for money.

The hot spring water quality is excellent and leaves your skin silky smooth. Cleanliness is very well maintained. I used the bath three times, and it was always spotless. The Facility does not have features like automatic locks or card keys, and the amenities are basic (such as POLA cosmetics), but at this price point that was not an issue. The view is wonderful, the Room is spacious, and the large windows create an amazing sense of openness. Although it’s a Japanese-style room, having beds in the bedroom was also a plus. Above all, the meals were outstanding. Despite the low price, there were plenty of premium ingredients—truly high-class dining. The head chef must be quite renowned. The dining staff were also very courteous; they kept our feet warm, and there was coffee and tea in the lobby as well. I was impressed by all the thoughtful touches. The original sweets were delicious too. I would love to return with someone special.

    Stunning View

We visited on a snowy day. Unable to climb the slope to the accommodation, we parked at the parking lot of a sister facility nearby. It was scary slipping on the road. However, the stunning view from the room, attentive service, convenient large bathhouse requiring no extra items, and an abundance of delicious dishes (the broth was excellent) made us very satisfied. So glad we came!

A Ryokan you'll want to visit again.

I have stayed here several times, but this was my first time visiting on a weekend and I was able to enjoy the fireworks. The view from the room is always breathtaking and unique, no matter how many times I visit. The Onsen is very relaxing, and both dinner and breakfast are absolutely delicious. I also appreciated the nail polish rental service. Shougetsu Ryokan is a place that makes me want to come back again. Unfortunately, it rained during this visit, so next time I hope to see the fireworks on a clear day. Thank you very much!

    [The Best Rice] Heartfelt Hospitality

The view from the Room was, of course, amazing, but the meals alone made choosing this Hotel worthwhile. Each staff member was full of hospitality. Even when heading to my Room via the elevator, I was warmly sent off with a "Have a nice day" from the manager who was far away. They also helped with a surprise for my birthday. It was truly a wonderful two-day stay.

    The long-awaited Shogetsu

We finally had the chance to visit this long-awaited accommodation. We arrived on the 13:30 shuttle service and were the first to check in while enjoying their original sweets. These sweets are exclusive to this accommodation and cannot be purchased elsewhere, so we bought one as a souvenir. Although I prefer slightly less sweet treats, they were delicious. We were allowed into our room early, so we immediately headed to the bath. It was empty, allowing us to relax fully. Even during our stay, it never got too crowded, making it a comfortable experience throughout. However, one issue was that the heating in the changing room was too strong; after soaking in a warm bath, stepping into such intense heat made us sweat excessively—slightly weaker heating would be appreciated. We also tried using Gero Kanko Hotel's bath as it was available for guests here but found that this accommodation’s bath offered better views and ambiance—it alone sufficed for us. Our room on the 8th floor had an amazing view thanks to clear weather that day. For dinner at 17:30 (scheduled early so we could catch fireworks along the river from December through March on Saturday nights), every dish served exceeded expectations with no disappointments! We ordered sake but forgot about taking what remained back with us; however, staff kindly brought it up later to our room without any issues—and even allowed us graciously enjoy it during breakfast next morning! The fireworks viewed directly from our room without obstruction became unforgettable memories despite lasting only around ten minutes—a perfect touch ending such wonderful travel moments! Perhaps due partly drinking earlier evening led falling asleep missing nighttime soak yet waking refreshed enough compensating by bathing three times before checkout time instead! Breakfast included continuous servings side dishes alongside rice refills leaving completely satisfied afterward sipping coffee leisurely lounge pre-settling bill ahead relaxing until departure hour where return shuttle service ensured smooth journey homeward reflecting purely indulgent trip dedicated solely relishing everything offered here thoroughly enjoyed thanks genuinely attentive friendly staff members throughout entire stay much gratitude extended sincerely hoping someday visiting sister facility "Umi-no-Shogetsu" seaside counterpart future opportunity arises!

    We stayed here last ...

We stayed here last year and were initially surprised by the price, but the exceptional hospitality exceeded our expectations, so we decided to return this year. This time, we happened to visit during two days of an intense cold wave, which brought up two concerns. First, while the changing area in the bath was wonderfully warm, there was a strong draft in the bathroom itself that made it uncomfortably cold. Second, on one night when sleet began falling, we could hear constant loud sounds like raindrops hitting a tin roof from our room located under a small roof area—it went on all night and was quite distracting. Other than these points, everything else was just as perfect as last year!

I visited after about three years. This time, I stayed in a room type I hadn't used in a while. Whether it was renovated or on a different floor from the room I stayed in before, I was looking forward to enjoying the fully glass-paneled view. However, most of the rooms were oddly partitioned with sliding doors, and I didn't get the feeling of staying in a spacious room, which was disappointing. The basic courteous service remained unchanged, but there were 2-3 moments where I thought "huh?" due to minor details. It felt like an unfamiliar discomfort or perhaps a decline in service? A bit disappointing. That said, the hot spring water remains excellent as always, and since it's an accommodation my mother loves, I'd like to visit again.

Thank you very much for your kind and attentive service from the moment of our arrival to our departure. We were especially impressed not only by the delicious meals but also by the variety of dishes and the exceptional hospitality of the staff. It is truly a testament to your excellent training. This time, we visited as a family, and we all agreed that if we come to Gero Onsen again, we would definitely choose Shogetsu. Thank you!
