    Cool Summer Breeze

I had always felt that the meals were exceptionally delicious, but this time several dishes that conveyed a refreshing coolness were served, allowing me to enjoy Japanese cuisine with my eyes and savor it with my palate. I was disappointed that there was no Japanese omelet at breakfast. Also, there was no chair at the Room washbasin area, which was a little inconvenient. Other than that, I was very satisfied.

We were extremely satisfied with this Accommodation!

The Room, meals, and baths were all excellent. Every dish was delicious and beautifully presented. Both the Room and the large public bath were kept very clean, which was wonderful. Due to our schedule, we checked in after 6:00 PM, so we could only enjoy the Onsen twice—at night and in the morning—which was a bit disappointing. If we have the chance to visit again, we would like to take our time and relax.

Both the Room and the Onsen were wonderful, and it was great to feel the Facility’s historical value. Just one suggestion: with a bit more explanation about the meals, guests could better appreciate their value and enjoy them even more.

    The hospitality was outstanding.

It was my first visit to Yamaguchi. I stayed alone in the main building. The Room felt well-aged and full of history, but it was clean and well maintained. I could also step out into the garden from my Room and fully enjoy the beautiful grounds. Being able to soak in Ishin-no-Yu was another unforgettable highlight. The food was delicious, and breakfast in particular was outstanding! Before dinner, I was browsing the shop, and I was surprised when a female staff member addressed me by my last name. They remember faces and names right away. I thought it was wonderful hospitality. I bought the recommended fresh Uiro to take home, and it was excellent—my family loved it too! If I have a chance to visit Yamaguchi again, this is an Accommodation I’d love to stay at.

We had a satisfying stay even during the Golden Week holidays.

I stayed during a holiday period, so I assume the Accommodation was fully booked, but I rarely felt stressed by the crowds. The amenities, including those for the bath, were well stocked. I stayed in a first-floor Japanese-style room and it was a valuable experience that let me feel the history and atmosphere. If I had to mention one thing, you can hear some everyday noise from upstairs and voices from people out in the garden, so if that would bother you, the new building might be a better choice.\nThe meals were all delicious and satisfying, but it was a shame there wasn’t one standout dish that really stayed with me. Overall, I think the main building offers good value for money, including the chance to experience traditional living styles.

    It was unpleasant.

At night, only the breaker in our Room tripped, and we were told it couldn’t be restored, so we couldn’t use electricity. Because it happened suddenly, we couldn’t charge our phones or the kids’ Switch, so they stayed dead the whole time. We also couldn’t watch TV, and the kids complained. We had traveled from far away and planned to sleep in until breakfast, but early in the morning the power came back on and all the lights in the Room turned on. It was so bright that it woke us up; no one could get back to sleep and everyone was irritated. Even at check-out, there was no apology at all—just normal service until the very end. Only when we pointed it out on our way out did they finally say a single “We’re sorry,” as if they had just remembered. I love Onsen and stay at different places every month, but this is the first time I’ve ever been this upset. If you charge high prices yet make guests feel uncomfortable like this, you should apologize properly. I will never go again, and I cannot recommend it at all. The only saving grace was that the Onsen in our Room was good. And please note: I don’t need an apology comment from the Accommodation now.

    Wonderful Japanese hospitality

Everyone’s hospitality was outstanding, and I truly felt it is the reason this Accommodation’s history has endured. It was a wonderful place for history lovers, where I could relax and reflect on the late Edo period and the Meiji Restoration. Next time, I would love to visit again with my spouse. [Service] - Although I was traveling solo, the staff interacted with me at just the right distance—neither too close nor too distant—which made my stay very comfortable. - In their careful choice of words and gestures, I often felt their attentiveness to detail. - The front desk staff remembered both my name and my Room, and guided me smoothly to the dining area, which made me very happy. [Facilities] - My Room was in the main building; while its traditional structure remains and conveys a sense of history, the water facilities were relatively new and comfortable to use—the balance felt perfect. - The garden was beautifully maintained and truly impressive. - There were many valuable items and places connected to notable historical figures you’d read about in textbooks, which made my stay exciting throughout. - The multiple Onsen were built in different eras; it was fun to see those differences and feel their history, and everything was kept impeccably clean. [Overall] Experiencing firsthand the maintenance required for such historic buildings, gardens, and artifacts—as well as the high level of hospitality from the staff—my honest impression after staying here was: “I’d gladly pay about twice as much!” (laughs). I sincerely hope that traditional Japanese Accommodations like this—independent rather than backed by major capital—will continue for many years to come! (Sorry for such a long review…) Thank you very much.

An Accommodation with excellent service and a taste of history

Thank you for your courteous service. Historic baths dating back to 1860, including Ishin-no-Yu, have been preserved, and the garden also retains historical buildings from the Meiji Restoration era, which was very educational. Thank you very much. The Nakahara Chuya Memorial Museum was also just nearby.

After all, nothing beats an Onsen.

The hot spring was excellent as expected, but even more impressive was how delicious the fugu kaiseki meal was!!! They prepared 1.5 kg of fugu for two people, and the sashimi, fried fugu, and hot pot were all expertly handled—perfect thickness and incredibly easy to eat. Since it’s only available until today (3/31), I’m already looking forward to the season reopening this November. Thank you for a wonderful meal.

    It’s very good, but…

The property has a strong sense of history, and I was satisfied with the service and staff hospitality. However, as it was my first stay, there were no staff at the entrance when I arrived by car, so I wasn’t sure what to do. I didn’t know about luggage assistance or where to park, so I stopped the car temporarily and went to the front desk to ask. I believe having even one staff member at the entrance would allow guests to enter without worry, so please consider improving this.

    It can’t be helped, though.

This is a historic Ryokan where you can really feel the sense of history. The food and the Onsen were excellent. However, since our Room was in the main building, it had charm but the lack of soundproofing was disappointing. The air conditioner at night, voices from the next room until nearly 2:00 a.m., bathing sounds around 4:30 a.m., and door opening/closing noises all carried through. Also, since guests are free to stroll through the garden, if you don’t close the curtains, people can see straight in. It couldn’t be helped, but it still felt a bit disappointing.

Visit the Three Great Figures of the Meiji Restoration

As a history enthusiast, I had long hoped to visit Matsudaya, and at last I was able to stay there. From the moment we arrived, the hospitality was attentive down to the smallest details, yet never overly intrusive—an extremely pleasant experience. As a long-established Ryokan with about 350 years of history, I had imagined it might feel rather formal, but all of the staff were very friendly. There was none of the overly deferential stiffness often found at traditional Ryokan; they always spoke to us in some way, and it made us feel truly welcomed. The welcome drink served right after arrival was matcha. The place where we enjoyed it featured calligraphy by three key figures of the Meiji Restoration—Kido Takayoshi, Saigo Takamori, and Okubo Toshimichi—as well as a brocade imperial standard and even a letter from Sakamoto Ryoma. It made me think, “This is Matsudaya,” and I couldn’t help but be impressed. We stayed in a Room called “Omodaka,” which faces a pond; from the veranda we could feed the koi in the pond. When I asked the person who guided us to our Room, “Where can we buy koi food?” they replied with a smile, “I’ll bring it right away,” which warmed my heart. The open-air bath attached to our Room was also magnificent—carved from a large piece of granite—and we thoroughly enjoyed relaxing in the Onsen. For dinner we chose the “Fuku Course with Shirako.” To be honest, I’m not very discerning when it comes to taste and don’t always understand fugu’s flavor well, but the ponzu sauce was outstanding—truly top-class (my wife was delighted and said the fuku was delicious). The staff member who looked after us throughout our meal was also very personable, making dining even more enjoyable. There is a staircase leading up to the second floor right in front of our Room entrance, and I absolutely loved it—it felt as though each step carried an incredible sense of history. Then again, Matsudaya itself is history. We also used one of the baths said to have been used by those three Meiji Restoration leaders; it too had an indescribable charm. In every respect this Accommodation far exceeded my expectations. I would love to return when I have another opportunity. Thank you very much.

    A Historic and Iconic Hotel

Attentive service, a well-maintained Japanese garden, and high-quality Onsen allowed us to fully enjoy our stay. However, regarding the interior design, it left an impression of being somewhat inconsistent—nostalgic in one sense but lacking cohesion in another. While the structure retains elements likely from the Showa era rather than those from the Meiji Restoration period when historical figures resided here, newer additions like the baths feature modern lighting that detracts from any sense of history. Preserving key historical aspects such as meeting places of Kido, Okubo, and Saigo along with maintaining the building's framework and exterior while updating its interior could make for a more comfortable experience.

It was my long-awaited first stay.

To fulfill the recommendation of my late uncle, who often said, "If you go to Yamaguchi, you should stay at Matsudaya Hotel! Someday ◯◯-chan should visit too," I stayed here for the first time with my cousin. The well-maintained garden and magnificent pine trees were wonderful, and the footbath had a charming atmosphere that made us forget time as we enjoyed chatting leisurely. (My cousin loved the cute ornaments placed on stones and took many photos.) Each bath exuded history and elegance, with numerous historical items on display. The soft water quality of Yuda Onsen was truly exceptional. (The new? Kura no Yu also had a high ceiling that created an open atmosphere, providing deep relaxation.) The yukata design featuring Matsudaya's pinecones? and pine needles as well as coasters? were adorable. Guests from other rooms even commented, "Oh, your yukata in a different color is lovely," which led to delightful conversations. The beautifully presented cuisine was highly satisfying—I believe it rivals top-tier Japanese restaurants in Kanto hotels! Next time, I plan to visit with family or other friends. Thank you very much!

The quality of the Onsen was excellent, and the deliciousness of the pufferfish course was conveyed directly through its straightforward lineup. Among accommodations with similar pricing, this was by far the most satisfying. I would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

Enjoy the relaxing Orio Hot Spring with a garden view and savor the exquisite winter pufferfish delicacy.

I have tried fugu in many places, but the fugu sashimi here was the most delicious. Also, soaking in Oryo's Bath early in the morning while gazing at the garden is truly wonderful. If you love fugu, I highly recommend giving it a try!

Accommodation with Excellent Cuisine and Onsen

Close to Shin-Yamaguchi Station, as well as Akiyoshidai and Akiyoshido, we chose this Hotel because there are many dining options within walking distance. After checking in during the evening, we drove from the Hotel to see the illuminated five-story pagoda, which was breathtakingly beautiful. Breakfast was served in a clean private room with a variety of delicious dishes. Next time, I would like to include dinner as well.

Located along the road yet offering a completely different atmosphere, the ambiance was truly impressive. However, while the matcha served during check-in was delightful, it was disappointing that the accompanying snack was a store-bought yaki dango, which set off my stay on a slightly underwhelming note. That said, the meals and especially the bath were exceptional and highly satisfying. I do feel that instead of thin plastic bags for carrying items to the bath, something more unique to Matsudaya would be appreciated. Additionally, I would have liked to enjoy better-quality coffee in the morning; for an extra charge, it fell short of expectations in taste. Lastly, I happened to encounter three tattooed female guests bringing smartphones into the bath and leaving towels scattered on the floor. While this is not directly within your control as an accommodation provider, it left me feeling disheartened.

Experience a wonderful Onsen while feeling the history.

I stayed at this historic Hotel and enjoyed the serene atmosphere within its grounds, despite being surrounded by many buildings in the Onsen town. The peaceful flow of time was truly remarkable. The variety of baths, each with a sense of history, was particularly enjoyable. Above all, the hospitality was outstanding; staff always offered subtle yet thoughtful assistance. The meals were good overall; however, I felt that serving appetizers in a transparent plastic box did not match the concept of the Hotel. Additionally, breakfast items were quite salty, leaving a lingering taste throughout the day. I hope to stay here again during my next visit for a memorial service.

    Tranquility Hidden Amidst the Bustle

It exceeded expectations. The Room allowed us to fully enjoy the garden, but since it was visible from outside, the time we could keep the curtains fully open was limited. Although old, it was clean and pleasant. Thank you for your thoughtful gesture for the birthday celebration. Located in the city center, I was surprised at first thinking "Here?", but once inside, it felt like a time slip—a truly valuable experience.

    Historic Sites of Choshu Road

It was our first trip to the Choshu region. We were very satisfied staying at Matsudaya Ryokan with my husband’s favorite Shiba Ryotaro book in hand. The Onsen was incredibly smooth and refreshing. We also enjoyed engaging with the cosmic poetry of Chuya Nakahara, which allowed us to sleep soundly. The staff at the Ryokan provided natural hospitality, making us feel comfortable and relaxed—thank you very much!
