    This is an Accommodation I would definitely like to visit again.

    We chose this Accommodation because we were looking for a Room with a private Onsen bath, and it was absolutely the right choice. The in-room bath, filled with plenty of hot water, was wonderful in both water quality and temperature, and the view of the Zao mountain range from the window was spectacular. Dinner was satisfying in both quality and quantity—especially the pie stew, which was outstanding. We even asked to take the final dessert pudding back to our Room and enjoyed it a little later. The bed and chairs were very comfortable as well; truly impeccable hospitality throughout, as you would expect from a long-established Accommodation. Yamagata is far for us, but this was such a wonderful place that we would love to visit again.

    Satisfaction beyond your expectations

    The meals, the Room, and the large public bath were all perfect! We stayed in a Room with a private indoor bath fed directly from the source, and soaking in mineral-rich water while looking out over central Kaminoyama and the Zao mountain range was wonderful. In particular, the morning bath—watching the ridgeline gradually glow red as dawn approached from the darkness—was truly exceptional. We’d love to stay in the same Room again next time!

    Golden Week Use

    For dinner, I chose the steak, but it was quite fatty. Breakfast was a buffet with a wide variety of options, which I enjoyed. Overall, my satisfaction was somewhat lacking.

    The Finest Hospitality

    The Onsen is outstanding, and the scenic open-air bath is especially exceptional. The meals, centered around Yamagata beef, were highly satisfying. The staff were courteous and made us feel at ease. We also enjoyed a pottery experience where we made a plate—an unforgettable memory.

    It was so relaxing.

    I was feeling lonely traveling solo, but the Onsen, the meals, and the wonderful hospitality from all the staff were so amazing that it completely lifted my spirits—I was truly moved! Next time, I’d love to stay in a Room on the Zao side! The local ingredients and sake from Yamagata Prefecture are outstanding! I’d like to come back again soon! Thank you very much!

    It was great.

    For my birthday, I wanted to relax at an Onsen for a change, so I decided after reading the Reviews. The Room with a semi-open-air bath was clean, and dinner was very delicious. The staff were courteous, and their heartfelt hospitality moved me all the way through the final send-off. It was a wonderful day. I would love to visit again.

    The staff were very friendly and helpful.

    This was my first stay. I made a Reservation for two Rooms: a Standard Japanese-style Room and a Room with an open-air bath. Dinner was served in a private room, which was great. The front desk staff were kind and helpful, but the biggest concern was that the Rooms felt dusty. In the Japanese-style Room, lint dust was noticeable along the thresholds, which made me wonder if housekeeping checks are being done. That was the most disappointing point.

    Yamagata’s top recommended Ryokan you’ll want to return to again and again

    Every month, I stay here with my daughter to enjoy some quiet time together. From the moment I call to make a Reservation, the staff are kind and welcoming, and from the instant we arrive, we feel truly at ease. The check-in guidance and the thoughtful attention from everyone throughout the Ryokan never feels formal or routine—it is heartfelt hospitality that stays close to each guest, and it is one of this Ryokan’s greatest charms. What impresses me most is how considerate they are when there are group guests. They kindly let us know in advance which times may be busy and suggest ways to use the baths and breakfast more comfortably, so we can relax and enjoy our stay with peace of mind. I am moved every time by their careful attention—such as flexibly adjusting breakfast times depending on the situation. The meals are also beautifully presented with a strong sense of seasonality, and everything tastes wonderful—one of the highlights of our stay. However, for my daughter and me, the portions are a little large, and we sometimes cannot finish everything (which makes us feel sorry), so that is the only point where I held back my rating. The send-off at departure is also truly wonderful. Their warm words and sincere care until the very last moment always make me feel that I want to come back again. This Ryokan is especially meaningful to me because we held our wedding reception here 16 years ago. The Rooms and services have been thoughtfully updated over time, so each visit brings new delight. It is an outstanding Ryokan that I can confidently recommend to anyone who wants to truly unwind with someone important.

    The food is very poor.

    I stayed in a so-called Japanese-modern Room that was renovated last year. The nearly floor-to-ceiling glass walls with a view of the garden, along with the modern-style bathroom and wash area, left a very good impression. The standout feature was the open-air bath: rather than a typical mass-produced barrel-style tub, it was an authentic bath set with embedded stone, which truly impressed me. I had almost no complaints about the Room overall, but the sofa felt cheap and uncomfortable, so that seems like an area for improvement. On the other hand, the food was at the lowest level. I made a Reservation for the Yamagata beef steak course, but splurged to upgrade to the kaiseki course. That turned out to be a big mistake. The appetizers tasted like they had been prepared in advance and were not good; the sashimi was poor quality; the steak was overly greasy; the beef stew was lukewarm; and even items like fried fugu were burnt—everything was disappointing. Breakfast was similarly bad: it felt like pre-made items simply arranged into small bowls, and it was extremely salty to the point that I had no choice but to leave most of the pickles. The hospitality, service, and Facility were not bad—and the Room itself was excellent—but only the food stood out as exceptionally poor. Since this is a large Hotel, it may be difficult to consistently serve high-quality cuisine at scale. Still, when everything else is so good, being served meals like this is very disappointing as a guest and significantly lowered my overall satisfaction.

    It was comfortable.

    It was a comfortable stay. The outdoor bath on the first floor was sometimes too hot, and the room temperature on the top floor felt a bit cool at times, but we enjoyed that as well. The meals were delicious. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    It was really great!

    The service was excellent, and I’d love to stay again! The large public bath on the 8th floor was great, but the one on the 1st floor felt a bit underwhelming. If I had to mention one thing, that would be it! The Onsen in the Room was also fantastic!

    Outstanding hospitality

    We stayed in a Room with a semi-open-air bath. The view of Zao from the Room was wonderful, and with the free-flowing hot spring bath, the tub was already filled with plenty of hot water when we arrived… it felt amazing! It was still cold at the end of February, so having a semi-open-air bath rather than a fully open-air one was perfect. We were also glad we could try raku pottery and create our own one-of-a-kind painted plate. Dinner was more than sufficient in both quality and quantity, and we asked to take the pudding dessert back to the Room so we could enjoy it deliciously. Thank you for the wine and late check-out as part of IKYU’s Diamond benefits. This is an Accommodation we would love to visit again.

    It was a great change of pace.

    Among the many Ryokan in Yamagata, we chose this one based on the Room photos and Reviews, and it exceeded our expectations. The staff’s hospitality was warm and very attentive. Although it is a historic Ryokan, the renovated Room felt new, and the facilities were clean and comfortable. The breakfast buffet had just the right selection—not too much and not too little.

    Highly satisfied

    The Room was clean, and the size was just right. All of the meals were delicious. I usually don’t finish everything, but this was the first time I did. The Onsen bath on the 8th floor is large and has a great view through the windows, which was very relaxing. The open-air bath was much smaller than it looked in the photos and didn’t have any view, which was a bit disappointing. The open-air area on the 1st floor has four ceramic-style baths. I tried them all, but they were all so hot that I got out almost immediately. All of the staff were very pleasant and welcoming. If I have a chance to visit Yamagata again, I would like to stay here again.

    The Room was describ...

    The Room was described as having a semi-open-air bath, but the window stayed closed and fogged up again immediately even after wiping, so it felt like an indoor bath. The large public bath’s scenic open-air bath was also enclosed, and once you got into the water you couldn’t see the view at all. However, the high-quality Onsen water flowing directly from the source was excellent. The meals were thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and delicious. The Yamagata beef was outstanding. The staff were very kind and attentive. It was difficult to apply makeup at the washbasin, so it would be helpful to have a tabletop mirror or a small work surface in the Room.

    Third time

    This was my third stay at this Onsen Accommodation in my mother’s hometown, a place I have long cherished. The reason I chose this Accommodation is, above all, because it is regarded as one of Japan’s leading Accommodations where quiet, warm hospitality has been cultivated to a very high standard. Perhaps because I had those expectations, there were several disappointing points this time. The front desk service felt extremely businesslike, and I did not really sense a welcoming atmosphere for arriving guests. The same was true of the guidance to the Room. Overall, even a minimal smile would have helped. When I mentioned that it was my third visit, the response was also underwhelming. It felt like dealing with many guests had turned things into an assembly line. We checked in right at 3:00 p.m., so perhaps the staff were tired. Still, in hospitality the first few minutes greatly shape the impression that follows, and as an Accommodation representing Yamagata—and Japan—I could not help but wonder if this was acceptable. Also, while the Rooms and corridors may have been superficially renovated, we stayed on the 6th-floor level with Rooms featuring open-air baths; seeing multiple places where wallpaper seams were peeling in both the corridor and our Room was surprising for this Ryokan. Our Room did not face Zao; instead it looked out onto somewhat dry mountain ridges right in front of us. I understand that due to the season the view may not be at its best, but even so I would have appreciated some positive words—something that made us feel you wanted us to enjoy what is considered your main scenery. Overall it was not a stay that met my expectations; however, one bright spot was breakfast. The female staff working there in kimono offered attentive care and kind words just as before—service that truly says “this Ryokan.” In the end they made me feel glad we stayed. Dinner itself was colorful and delicious, and we enjoyed it. I am not looking for stiff or overly formal greetings or performative attentiveness. Rather, I sincerely hope you will continue to cherish and protect what makes you special: decades of tradition and reputation—and above all a heartfelt respect for each individual guest—so that you remain an outstanding Accommodation worthy of bearing the name “Koyo” as one of Yamagata’s finest.

    Stay with friends

    It was an excellent Accommodation! That morning, the Shinkansen service was suspended, which pushed back our plans for the day. As a result, we arrived late and regret that our stay was shorter. Even so, they kindly accommodated us with meals despite the late arrival, and everyone we interacted with made our stay truly pleasant. Both the Room and the food were wonderful, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious. The souvenir shop had a great selection as well, but since we had to catch a train we couldn’t shop much—something we’d like to do next time. When we mentioned we would walk to the station on departure, everyone showed such thoughtful concern and even gave us a snack, which meant a lot. We made it in time for the train we wanted and had a truly great stay overall. We would definitely like to stay again.

    Dinner

    Everything was delicious, and we were very satisfied. The Room was clean, and it’s rare to find a layout with a place (shelves) to put your luggage, so the functionality is excellent. We were able to relax in the Room’s semi-open-air bath—it was wonderful. The price felt well worth it.

    We had a relaxing stay.

    We stayed for three nights, and the dinners were excellent. The beef dishes in particular were outstanding, and the beef braised in red wine left a strong impression on us. Also, Bar Yopikari, which serves only products from Yamagata Prefecture, was wonderful—we ended up going two nights in a row. I didn’t know much about sake and asked many questions, but they explained everything kindly and it was very informative. My sweet-toothed husband visited the neighboring Yamagata Pudding every day during our stay. We were able to truly relax while enjoying the Onsen to the fullest. The young proprietress spoke to us in a friendly way, and we could feel her thoughtful care in preserving Koyou’s traditions.

    Both the bath and the meals were excellent.

    I stayed here when I came to see the snow monsters. The food was delicious, and the explanations were thorough, which made it very enjoyable. There are large public baths on the 8th floor and the 1st floor, and both are thoughtfully designed—I was very satisfied.

    An Accommodation you’ll want to stay at again

    Even though you must have many guests, I was truly moved that the staff remembered my name. I was also impressed by your warm hospitality in speaking to me. The Room was very clean, and the open-air bath was absolutely amazing. The view from the Room was wonderful as well, and I enjoyed a luxurious, happy time. This is an Accommodation I definitely want to stay at again.

    Snowy Onsen Getaway

    It was my retirement celebration trip. The Room was lovely, the meals were delicious, and the Onsen was very good. The staff were kind, but because of the snow I asked several staff members to check how to get to our next Accommodation (a sister property), and they didn’t seem to know, which was a little disappointing. My husband really liked the in-room Onsen. Next time, I’d like to visit in a season without snow.

    We stayed for one ni...

    We stayed for one night after skiing at Yamagata Zao. We stayed in a Japanese-Western style Room with a semi-open-air bath, with 2 adults and 3 children. Any worries about it feeling cramped disappeared the moment we walked in. The Room was spacious enough, and the in-room bath was fed directly from the hot spring source, so even with children we could relax and soak after they fell asleep. Dinner was carefully prepared dish by dish, delicious, and generous enough to fully satisfy even an adult man. The kids’ meal also came with beef stew and pudding—so much that they couldn’t finish it all. Most of all, everyone at the Accommodation was incredibly kind and courteous, and their thoughtful words made our stay truly comfortable. This is an Accommodation we would love to stay at again.

    The hospitality is excellent.

    From the welcome at the entrance to our departure, the hospitality was outstanding. As expected of a long-established Ryokan. The amenities were plentiful, and women can even choose the color of their yukata. You can enjoy two large public baths depending on the time of day. The Room was clean and comfortable, with no trash or dirt—an excellent stay! The in-room open-air bath was also fantastic. Dinner was delicious and served in a private room. Breakfast is buffet-style with a wide variety of dishes. You can also try raku pottery inside the property. I’d love to visit again next winter.

    We had a relaxing stay.

    For over 10 years, I have been visiting various Onsen Accommodations in eastern Japan about once a month, and I felt the hospitality here ranks among the top three. Although it is a large Accommodation with many staff members, every one of them demonstrated excellent service skills. However, the food was too salty for us. I understand that stronger seasoning is common in the Tohoku region, but guests’ preferences vary. I sincerely hope that at least for the private-room dinner, you could enhance the dashi flavor and reduce the saltiness in the dishes. Only the miso soup at dinner and the miso soup at breakfast were delicious to us.

    The hospitality was excellent.

    I have stayed at this Accommodation repeatedly, but I have never felt the hospitality to be as outstanding as it was this time. The renovations have been carried out extensively throughout the building, and the dinner area had semi-private partitions, allowing us to enjoy a delicious meal in a very clean and pleasant setting. The shop has also been refurbished; it felt like there were fewer items for sale than before, but it also seemed more refined as a result. Since we stayed on a weekday, the Onsen was not crowded, which made it especially comfortable. One point: there were no towels or paper in the Room for drying hands after using the toilet or washbasin. When I asked at reception, I was told this was not a mistake and that they do not provide them in the Room from the start. They suggested using either the bath towel or one of the face towels for bathing, but for hygiene reasons I would prefer to have a separate towel or paper specifically for drying hands after washing. I hope this Accommodation continues to thrive. I look forward to staying with you again in the future. Thank you very much.

    It was a wonderful Accommodation.

    Overall, it was a wonderful Accommodation. Not only was the service excellent, but the interior and Room design had great taste, the amenities were very well stocked, and the food quality was exceptionally high. We also had the chance to try a raku pottery experience, which became a great memory. One point for improvement: in the ceramic bath at the large public bath on the first floor, one of the baths was so hot that we couldn’t get in (on both days). It was probably in the high 40s °C—hot enough to cause burns if someone stepped in by mistake. We actually saw another guest put a foot in, get startled, and pull it out immediately… It could be dangerous if an elderly person entered accidentally, so please check and manage the water temperature frequently. That said, thank you very much for such a wonderful stay.

    New Year's Holiday

    Spent the New Year with family who returned home. The Room was clean, and the meals were delicious, allowing us to relax. However, with five people in the Room, there weren't enough seats on the sofa, so we requested an extra chair later. It was promptly provided, and we had a comfortable stay.
