    Wonderful

With its expansive grounds, tranquil atmosphere, seemingly oversized guest rooms, and dedicated attendants, this is a top-tier Japanese-style Ryokan. While it did feel a bit dated in places—such as not having enough power outlets by the bed—we were very satisfied with our stay. It was disappointing that the private family bath (Nishi-no-Yu) was closed due to reduced hot spring water volume depending on the season.

It was a highly satisfying stay.

All ratings are "5 stars," but this is not a casual judgment. It truly deserves the highest score by any standard. From the moment we arrived and passed through the gate to the time we departed, we felt happy and completely relaxed. The hospitality was attentive and thoughtful, meeting every need perfectly. The carefully selected ingredients and masterful cooking of the meals were simply impressive. We especially enjoyed this season's rare Omura Bay sea cucumber dishes, both as sashimi and in other preparations—they were absolutely delicious. The breakfast buffet, where you can order directly at your table, started with freshly squeezed juice and included items so delightful that I couldn't resist going back for seconds (and I did). Among them was French toast that I can confidently say is the best I've ever tasted in my life. As someone nearing 70 years old who has loved French toast since childhood and tried it countless times over decades, you can trust my words—this was truly exceptional!

    Luxurious Space

For our second night in Unzen, we stayed at Hanzuiryo, a place we had always wanted to visit. The lush greenery within the property was stunning. Although it’s a detached building, it has an intriguing design connected by an underground floor. Our room was a spacious two-story layout. The air conditioning on the first floor was unclear and felt cold, but since we dined at the restaurant, it wasn’t an issue. The air conditioning on the second floor worked perfectly, and the bed was very comfortable! At the restaurant, it seemed like most guests opted for in-room dining as there were no other diners—felt like having a private space! The classical Western-style ambiance of the restaurant contrasted beautifully with our traditional Japanese-style room. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious. The coffee machine in our Room and complimentary drinks in the fridge were great touches too! We also enjoyed gazing at the beautiful Japanese garden from our first-floor Room—it was so relaxing. The staff provided excellent service throughout our stay. The bathwater was wonderful; however, I found the outdoor bath slightly lukewarm which was a bit disappointing. I purchased an adorable Arita porcelain cat-patterned coffee cup from their shop and now enjoy my daily coffee with it! If I visit Unzen again, I would love to stay here once more!

The deterioration of the building and facilities, as well as the reduced number of dishes, is disappointing.

This is a discussion about whether this accommodation is suitable as a 200,000 yen per night stay. First, there are issues such as holes in the sliding doors being left unrepaired and the floor feeling soft and unstable under the carpet—this is unacceptable. It seems there used to be a single flower vase in the restroom, but it has been removed. Regarding meals, while everything can now be seen on YouTube these days, dinner has been downgraded from 13 dishes to 10 dishes. The yam steak that was served at breakfast is no longer available. The rice cooker and spatula placed in the room were wrapped in plastic wrap—does this suggest an intention to avoid washing them? It made me wonder what else might have been neglected. This was my first time encountering something like this—why? When I checked out just a few minutes (3-4 minutes) late, staff came directly to my room to remind me. Wouldn't a phone call have sufficed? The free drinks provided in the refrigerator are quite limited compared to other accommodations at this price point of 200,000 yen per night. **Positive Aspects:** - The overwhelming spaciousness of the room - The warm welcome upon arrival and quick check-in process - Direct access from inside without stepping outside to reach the large public bath on the first floor - Availability of room service offers - The excellent surrounding environment and tranquility - Large property size (compared with Kai or other hotels)

Accommodation you'd want to visit again

During our spring stay, we made a reservation as we wanted to see the autumn leaves and it coincided with our wedding anniversary. The season was perfect. The beauty from the entrance was breathtaking. The contrast with the moss color was also stunning. The cuisine was truly delicious, incorporating seasonal ingredients and thoughtfully prepared. I especially enjoyed the simmered dish and palate cleanser items. The hospitality was pleasant, and all the staff had wonderful smiles. We hope to stay again next year during either the Miyama Kirishima bloom or autumn foliage season.

    It was like another world.

This was an accommodation I had wanted to visit for a long time, and I was finally able to fulfill my wish by finding a day with an affordable price. The room, onsen, and meals were, of course, wonderful, as well as the lush grounds and the garden spreading out in front of the room. The onsen water was softer than expected and pleasantly gentle without excessive stimulation. During the meal, I enjoyed hearing various stories from the staff member in charge. Thanks to this experience, even though it was just one night, I was able to relax thoroughly. It’s not an accommodation that can be visited casually often, but I would love to return during another season.

Thank you very much for your heartfelt service.

We visited to celebrate my partner's birthday. The manager and the entire staff sincerely accommodated us, including decorating the Room, for which we are truly grateful. It is a wonderful Ryokan, and we would be delighted to visit again. Wishing you continued success and prosperity.

    Extraordinary space and time

Thank you to everyone at Hansuiryo for a wonderful stay. Upon check-in, I was guided to my Room, and as I stepped into the entrance, I was amazed by the spaciousness of the entrance and the greenery of the trees visible through the distant windows. After being shown each Room on the second floor and descending to the first floor, I was deeply impressed by both the garden view, which differed from that of upstairs, and the beauty of each Room. Morning and evening offered different views that I could enjoy all to myself while spending a relaxing time. The meals were also excellent, made even more enjoyable with such stunning scenery. As for Onsen facilities, I appreciated how quiet it was in the large communal bath area where I could savor peaceful moments without encountering many people. I'd love to visit again during another season!

As expected of a Japanese Ryokan, such architecture might be impossible to recreate today!

This is my second stay at this accommodation after 20 years, and the building's grandeur remains unchanged, with excellent maintenance. I travel about 30 times a year and have stayed at most of the famous ryokans in Japan, but I still believe this building is No.1. During this trip to Unzen, I stayed at three well-known ryokans, and while the accommodation fee here was the highest, this building left a truly impressive impression. The meals were also satisfactory even for someone like me who lives in Kyoto City. I would love to visit again in a few years to confirm its excellence once more.

A very good property, but aging.

The service was generally satisfactory. The meals were not particularly luxurious but acceptable. The issue is that the entire facility is clearly aging, and there was an unpleasant odor coming from the carpet.

    Excellent hospitality

I casually mentioned it, but you kindly prepared meals for my husband for both dinner and breakfast, which deeply moved me to tears. The furnishings were all exquisite, and your polite response to any inquiries was greatly appreciated. I will definitely use your services again.

    A long-awaited stay.

I had the pleasure of staying at Hansuiryo, a long-awaited experience. The sukiya-style architecture and meals were impeccable. I was especially delighted to enjoy seasonal dishes like matsutake mushroom soup and grilled half lobster. The refined flavors made the meal even more enjoyable. For breakfast, I requested rice porridge and was pleasantly surprised by the separate sauce prepared for it. I heard that their culinary style is influenced by Kyoto's renowned Kiccho restaurant. While I'm not an expert in cuisine, it was clear that great care was taken to ensure an enjoyable dining experience. At this accommodation, private dining rooms are available in the guest building for in-room meals; however, this time I opted for restaurant dining. While in-room dining is appealing, the ambiance of the restaurant was exceptional. Having both dinner and breakfast in a serene setting with no other guests around made it a truly relaxing experience. The room's furnishings were tastefully arranged with a calm aesthetic. The refrigerator offered a sufficient variety of beverages as well. Due to heavy rain from the previous day, I couldn't use the open-air bath; however, this became part of my memorable stay nonetheless. At Hansuiryo, I didn't encounter any other guests during my stay. Being able to spend truly private time with family or friends is invaluable here. I hope to visit again someday. That said, due to its architectural design, this accommodation is not barrier-free and lacks elevators. While some may find this inconvenient, I personally feel that preserving its current form adds charm and authenticity. As traditional accommodations are becoming rarer due to adjustments for international tourists' preferences, I sincerely hope they maintain their classic style as much as possible moving forward.

The special room was truly exceptional.

Simply outstanding. The room's amenities, spaciousness, hospitality, and exquisite cuisine were all impeccable. The room features a sauna, a large bath, and an open-air Onsen bath—an unbelievably well-equipped facility. The shower had excellent water pressure with instant hot water, and every detail was thoughtfully considered. Even the towels were soft to the touch, and drinking water was replenished after using the sauna with meticulous care—it felt almost too luxurious. Everything exceeded expectations, providing an extraordinary experience. If I had to point out a minor flaw, it would be the slightly tricky temperature adjustments. Many thanks to everyone at Hansuiro for such a wonderful stay!

I have been using this place for 10 years, but it seems the ownership has changed. Although it is the peak season, the pricing feels high, and the quality of amenities and facilities seems to have declined. On the other hand, customer service and food remain excellent as always.

    Traditional Japanese Ryokan

I have known about this Ryokan for years and always wanted to stay here. Although the access is not very convenient and I hadn't had the chance to visit, I now wish I had come earlier. Having visited various Ryokans across Japan, I believe this is one of the top-class establishments. The atmosphere within the premises and the attentive, detailed service by the staff made me want to visit again. Thank you for providing such a wonderful space and experience.

I will definitely visit again in a different season!

We stayed for one night on April 12, enjoying various accommodations that suit our preferences as a couple. The beauty of the garden and the exceptional dining experience in a room designed to resemble a Noh stage were truly outstanding. The cuisine was exquisite. What made this experience even more remarkable was the dedication of the staff, led by our room attendant, and their efforts behind the scenes to ensure a comfortable stay. We will definitely return in another season.

    70th Birthday Celebration

We stayed at the accommodation to celebrate my husband's 70th birthday. They kindly prepared a traditional celebratory outfit, and each dish was part of a festive meal incorporating seasonal ingredients, which were truly delicious. We deeply appreciated the warm hospitality in every small detail. We have already made a reservation for our next visit to celebrate our wedding anniversary and enjoy the autumn leaves. This is an accommodation that makes us want to stay again.

The meals, the Room, and the Onsen were all excellent at this Property. It was a celebration for my husband's 60th birthday, and I was deeply moved by the special arrangement for the dinner. The suikinkutsu in the garden produced a beautiful sound that felt cleansing to the soul. Thank you very much for your kind hospitality.

    It is a good Stays.

It is my first visit in two months. The Sukiya-zukuri architecture is wonderful, and you can appreciate its beauty just by looking at the ceiling. You can realize that the latest is not always the best. The service from the staff, including the Nakai-san, is impeccable. The food is also delicious. You can experience the true charm of a Ryokan.

    To eat osechi

I have stayed at Hanmizuki (Hanmizuki) several times, but this is my first time staying during the New Year. I am always very pleased with the attentive service. I am always attended by the same staff member, and their attention to detail is exceptional. Since it was the New Year, we went to enjoy the traditional New Year's dishes, and I was very impressed when I opened the jubako box. The dishes reflected the spirit of the head chef. You can also see seasonal flowers, but there is nothing in the middle of winter. It is the perfect property to relax and cleanse your mind. I highly recommend everyone to stay at least once.

The food was not very good.

The size and usability of the Room, as well as the view of the garden from the Room, are impeccable. However, although the menu is luxurious, the food overall did not seem very delicious. I think the number of dishes could be reduced a bit, but I would like to see an improvement in taste.

    It was an inspiring stay.

We stayed as a group of three, a mother and daughters. As we drove through the entrance gate, we were greeted by a beautiful approach, lush with greenery yet not a single twig on the ground. When we stopped in front of the main building, a large number of staff came out to welcome us, making us feel both happy and a bit shy. Check-in was conducted in the lounge while enjoying some sweets, and tea was also served in our room. We had two attendants assigned to our room, and dinner was leisurely enjoyed over two and a half hours, with each dish being brought to us just as we finished the previous one. When we were confused about which dish was which among the many served, they kindly provided us with a handwritten guide, complete with captions for photos of each dish. We were not just impressed but deeply moved. The tea served after the meal was at the perfect temperature, neither too hot nor too cold, and we were truly touched by the attentiveness of the attendants. Additionally, as we had mentioned it was a birthday celebration, they not only prepared a special celebratory meal but also placed a candle on the dessert and sang "Happy Birthday" for us. We were genuinely delighted to receive such warm and heartfelt hospitality, beyond just luxury and beauty. The furnishings in the room were spotless, a cold water pot was placed in the bathroom's changing area, a faint scent of incense wafted through the room, and seasonal flowers were arranged here and there. I wondered how much effort the staff put in behind the scenes to create this space. There were also thoughtful touches that we didn't notice at the time but realized after returning home. It was a stay that far exceeded our expectations and left us deeply moved. Although the accommodation fee was not cheap, and we honestly thought it would be a once-in-a-lifetime visit, by the time we left, we all felt, "We definitely want to come back." We are motivated to work hard in our daily lives so that we can return here again. Thank you very much for this experience.

    Very disappointing.

I love this place and have used it many times. This time, I used it for a family birthday. It was very disappointing that the person who always takes care of us was absent. I didn't quite get along with the replacement staff, so I couldn't relax. Furthermore, due to the typhoon, one of the hot springs was unavailable. I wish I had been informed the day before. It seems that amenities have also changed since the management changed. I wonder if they forgot about the Diamond member benefits, as there was nothing. The food was as delicious as always, so I was satisfied with that. The hot springs and service were disappointing. It's sad because it's a ryokan I love...
