    Two days of tranquility in Mifuneyama Rakuen, immersed in fine dining

    During my Kyushu trip in mid-June, I stayed for a Multiple Night Stay (2 nights) in the “Chikurintei—Panoramic Open-Air Bath (Japanese-Western Room)” nestled within Mifuneyama Rakuen’s vast grounds. I stayed in the “Yamazakura” Room, which offered views of Mt. Mifune from the corridor and garden, and even had a private gate with direct access to Mifuneyama Rakuen. The open-air bath is a standing-style bath set among trees. It creates a unique floating sensation, and because the water pressure is applied evenly over the whole body, I felt less fatigue afterward. Being able to enjoy the garden and sky while standing also adds to the wonderful sense of openness. The Onsen water is clear and colorless—an alkaline simple spring—with an exceptionally gentle feel on the skin, so I never tired of soaking. The indoor bath is heated groundwater, but I also enjoyed it: the hinoki tub was very comfortable, and it didn’t take long to fill. What stood out most was the outstanding quality of dinner. The kaiseki course featuring seasonal local ingredients such as Takezaki crab immediately draws you in with its dashi—clear yet deeply flavorful, beautifully balanced. Each dish reflected the season in both taste and presentation: refined and truly beautiful. Beyond ingredient quality alone, there was a confident simplicity backed by real skill. Even on a Multiple Night Stay, every meal was flawless at an exceptional level. Simply superb—thank you for such a feast. Another highlight was visiting teamLab’s art installations at the affiliated Mifuneyama Rakuen Hotel on the same grounds (guests of Chikurintei can enter free). From the moment you step into the lobby, you’re struck by countless lamps evoking forest flowers and sunlight filtering through trees. The most breathtaking work was “Megalis in Ruins Bathhouse,” where digital projections of seasonal flowers illuminate massive stones rising throughout an abandoned public-bath space. When we visited, different scenes cycled continuously—twelve distinct visuals representing all months—and we became fully immersed for about an hour until they completed one full round late at night before closing. Also worth mentioning: the cold-brew coffee served in the lounge area was delicious—I refilled it many times and enjoyed it back in my Room as well. To everyone at “Oyado Chikurintei,” thank you sincerely for creating such a wonderful stay. I will absolutely return when I visit Takeo Onsen again.

    A Lovely Accommodation in Mifuneyama Rakuen Garden

    Takechintei, located within the vast Mifuneyama Rakuen grounds, was a wonderful Accommodation filled with warm hospitality. The staff’s thoughtful care was exceptional, and we were truly grateful for service beyond what we could have hoped for. Although July was already extremely hot, the breeze in the forest was pleasant, and we enjoyed a refreshing walk among the trees. The meals were also a delight, with the chef’s finest dishes beautifully presented on carefully selected tableware such as Arita ware. Some dishes felt slightly sweet to me as someone from the Kanto region, but I felt they were of a refined restaurant quality that goes beyond typical Onsen Ryokan cuisine. Next time, I would love to stay during the season when 5,000 cherry blossoms or azaleas are in bloom. Thank you very much.

    An Accommodation I’d Love to Visit Again

    Were you satisfied in the past?

    I’ve stayed here many times. In the past, I was so satisfied with the cuisine, hospitality, pleasant setting, and the quality of the suite that I fell in love with this Accommodation, so things like how to make coffee, preparing before using the in-room bath (it wasn’t an Onsen), not being able to choose a Room when making a Reservation on IKYU, side tables and sofas being too low and hard on my back, the main bath being too far to bother with early in the morning (though the in-room bath is open-air), and there being too few trash bins didn’t bother me at all. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started noticing these things. When I asked a few staff members about them, they said nothing has changed for at least the past 10 years—which was disappointing. It ended up being an anniversary stay that left me feeling a bit down.

    It was a truly memorable stay.

    We had a wonderful, relaxing stay.　 We were truly moved by the blessings of nature and the warm hospitality of all the staff. We would especially like to thank Mr./Ms. M for enhancing our dining experience with such attentive service. Also, having the bath towels in our Room replaced with fresh ones even at breakfast time was a first for us despite staying at many Accommodations, and we really appreciated your thoughtful care. The garden and open-air bath in our Room were truly lovely. And while not large, the view of the bamboo grove from the public bath felt like another world. We will never forget your heartfelt hospitality down to every detail. Thank you very much.

    A Japanese Ryokan with a Vast Garden

    This is a Japanese-style Ryokan with a vast garden. The flowers were not in bloom, but that depends on the season, so it can’t be helped. The staff provide excellent service, making this Accommodation very relaxing.

    Beyond expectations!!

    We stayed here after reading online Reviews and watching videos, and to be honest, it ranks among the top one or two Accommodations we have ever stayed at. The atmosphere and setting, the baths, and the cuisine all exceeded our expectations—above all, the thoughtfulness and attentiveness of every staff member was truly moving. This is exactly what you would call a Japanese Accommodation. We gathered information online beforehand and arrived with all sorts of expectations, but none of that mattered—in the best way—and we were reminded that seeing is believing. The meals feature seasonal ingredients at their peak, so our family has already decided we will definitely return. We’ll work hard (laugh) and come back again.

    I chose this Accommo...

    I chose this Accommodation for my first stay in Takeo Onsen, combined with sightseeing in Arita, because of its excellent reviews. Because it is located within Mifuneyama Rakuen, the gardens are beautiful everywhere, and I was impressed by the lovely flowers arranged throughout the building. However, since we arrived late and it unfortunately rained the next day, it was disappointing that we couldn’t stroll through the garden they are so proud of. The “Yamazakura” Room we stayed in was spacious with a beautiful garden view, and the bedroom—converted from an old storehouse—was wonderfully quiet. On the downside, the wash area (which also serves as a changing space) was small, and it was cold because there was no heating in the corridor between the tatami room and the bedroom. The in-room amenities, including the toilet and washbasin area, felt somewhat dated and not very user-friendly. The open-air bath in the Room is a standing-style rock bath. Since it is set up on steps, it was very easy to use; the water quality was excellent; and the view from the bath was stunning—I loved it. That said, because it’s a bit far from the Room to reach it, having to go back and forth through a cold garden while unclothed was difficult—especially with heavy rain on our second morning. The meals were simply outstanding. The ingredients were carefully selected, and every dish—from even their basic dashi—showcased the chef’s skill. The clay-pot-cooked white rice was exceptional as well, and on top of that, alcoholic drinks were very reasonably priced. Including breakfast, this ranks among some of best dining I’ve had at any Accommodation so far. During meals as well, I was touched by their thoughtful service—without even asking they continually replaced towels and coffee with fresh ones for us. When I visit Takeo Onsen again, this is an Accommodation I would definitely like to stay at once more. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    Everything was perfect. The sauna at the sister facility was also excellent. The staff in charge of meals provided us with various sightseeing information, allowing us to enjoy a more fulfilling trip than planned. They were friendly and engaging during meals, making the experience even more enjoyable. Thank you very much!

    The facility may feel slightly dated, but overall, it’s nearly a perfect score of 100. What stands out the most is N-san, who was in charge of our room—absolutely flawless! Their smile, choice of words, and demeanor were truly impressive. We have stayed at numerous accommodations before, but not only us—everyone we traveled with this time also gave a perfect score of 100. Additionally, the dinner was exceptionally delicious—a rarity in recent years! The dishes were not only made with high-quality ingredients but also seasoned perfectly to bring out their full potential. The result was an outstanding dining experience. We are looking forward to our next visit. Thank you very much for your hospitality!

    A serene and elegant accommodation with attentive and kind staff. The facility, including the well-maintained courtyard, is beautiful. During the nighttime light-up event at Mifuneyama Rakuen, we explored the garden from the hotel grounds but found it potentially unsafe for those who have been drinking or for elderly guests. Daytime exploration seems pleasant but due to heat and overgrown plants, contact with foliage is unavoidable; wearing insect repellent or protective clothing is recommended. The room had an open-air bath, but since the large public bath was almost exclusively available and there were restrictions on adjusting the temperature of the private open-air bath until 5 PM, we only used it as a footbath—making it feel underutilized. While rooms with open-air baths are trendy post-COVID-19, I felt that an indoor bath with Onsen water from a faucet would suffice. Considering the number of rooms versus staff presence and attention to detail, I believe the price reflects this balance; however, personally, I wouldn’t choose to stay again at this price point. Additionally, while staff are accommodating regarding insects or other creatures in general areas (likely seasonal), this accommodation may not be suitable for those uncomfortable with such encounters.

    An Accommodation You'll Want to Visit Again and Again

    This was my second visit. This time, I stayed in the most popular room, Gotake. The entrance sprinkled with water, the well-maintained garden, and the spotless room all reflected a sense of hospitality. The service, meals, and onsen were all exceptional. I was amazed by the fully glass-walled room. The view of the garden through the glass truly lived up to the name "Chikurintei." The chair casually placed on the spacious moon-viewing platform was designed by a famous designer, showcasing attention to detail here as well. When I went to the entrance to visit Mifuneyama Rakuen Hotel's sauna, they quickly prepared sandals for me—such thoughtful gestures are heartwarming. Every dish highlighted its high-quality ingredients and was deliciously prepared; even the tableware and presentation were outstanding. The staff serving our meal had impeccable timing and answered questions about dishes or tableware accurately when asked. The open-air bath in our room was so pleasant that I used it multiple times during my stay. Taking an early morning walk in Mifuneyama Garden felt absolutely refreshing as well! I also enjoyed a leisurely breakfast served in my room at my own pace. I look forward to visiting again during another season!

    It was a wonderful accommodation that I would love to visit again.

    Thank you for your thoughtful hospitality towards my elderly mother. The warm and attentive service, aiming to fulfill all our wishes, made this accommodation truly delightful. The Takasago room with its open-air bath was exceptional. The silky onsen connected seamlessly to the spacious garden, offering a cool shade even on scorching days. We enjoyed it immediately upon arrival, admired the nighttime illumination, and appreciated its charm in the early morning—relishing it multiple times during our stay. Both dinner and breakfast were meticulously prepared with seasonal flavors, perfect portions, and exquisite taste. The chef's carefully selected sake paired wonderfully with the meals. My mother was deeply impressed and said it was more delicious than any other accommodation we've visited before. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again!

    Family Trip

    This was our third visit to Bamboo Grove Ryokan with my mother, brother, and sister. During dinner, I ordered a red wine but decided to save half of it for later. We went to the bar at Mifuneyama and returned to find the red wine gone, with only a glass of partially melted ice water (as shown in the photo) left on the table. I called room service and asked them to bring back the red wine we had earlier. After waiting, they brought an empty bottle and said something confusing like, "It was there when you left, but when I came to change the glasses, it was gone." I asked if someone else had entered our room while we were at the bar and drank it without permission. They replied with "I don't know." The whole situation made us uneasy. We ordered new drinks instead and tried to relax before going to bed; however, both my brother and I felt uncomfortable wondering if someone might be in or enter our room during the night—it was hard for us to sleep peacefully. The next morning at breakfast, no one mentioned anything about what happened until we brought it up ourselves during checkout by asking if they were aware of last night's incident regarding the wine. The response? "Yes, we're aware; we've prepared some tea for you," which felt like brushing off responsibility entirely—quite laughable! For such a high-end ryokan, their handling of this matter was shockingly poor. That said—the bathhouse facilities and meals were excellent! Hopefully next time they'll handle things more professionally as improvements are needed here. By the way—we did pay for that missing bottle of wine in full!

    Your Usual Comfort

    After two years, we were finally able to make a Reservation and visit again. We’ve lost count of how many times we’ve stayed here, but it’s always relaxing no matter when we come. We arrived before 15:00 and enjoyed a leisurely stay until just before 11:00 the next morning. Last year, which was our golden wedding anniversary, we couldn’t stay because Reservations were fully booked. Compared to the past, making a Reservation has become extremely difficult recently, which is disappointing for us.

    A Wonderful Stay

    The spirit of Omotenashi is beautifully expressed here. Before checking into our rooms, we experienced a sense of Zen while immersing ourselves in the atmosphere of TeamLab artworks at the lobby of a nearby sister hotel. The room, surrounded by a lovely garden with flowers, greenery, and hillside views, is spacious, impeccably clean, and thoughtfully designed. It reminded me of early summer days in the countryside where I grew up in northern Taiwan. Sitting at the desk with a beautiful window view to read or listen to music was such a joy. When feeling slightly tired, soaking in the onsen water was incredibly refreshing. Dinner and breakfast were unforgettable experiences featuring tender and perfectly cooked Saga steak alongside other delightful dishes. The staff were exceptionally kind and attentive; their warm smiles truly brightened up our stay. This is a hotel that anyone would want to visit again and again—thank you for your outstanding hospitality!

    This is a wonderful Ryokan, and the related facilities are also excellent.

    The ryokan has an old-fashioned feel, but it is well-maintained and pleasant. The service by the senior staff is very warm and welcoming. The younger staff have a modern vibe, but that doesn't mean they are lacking in any way. The meals are top-class, among the best I've had at any accommodation—simply excellent. The sauna facility is also fantastic. I look forward to staying again in the future. Thank you!

    It is a good Stays...

    I had a relaxing time. The service was polite and very good. The food was excellent. My wife especially praised the meat. Both dinner and breakfast (Japanese style) were delicious. The only disappointment was that the grilled fish was a bit lacking. Among the almost perfect aspects, it was unfortunate that the Onsen was a circulating type. It was a bit disappointing to have a circulating Onsen at a renowned Facility. Also, I felt it was a slight downside that there were warm and chilly spots in the Room.

    The best hospitality and dining

    From the welcome to the stay, it was the best hospitality until the end! The thoughtfulness for the birthday celebration, the meals including sashimi, Saga beef, and rare citrus genko, and the plates like Arita ware from the Edo period, the tea house BAR was also excellent! The Onsen is also superb! I will visit again!

    Although it was a Property that was difficult to book despite living nearby, I stayed for the first time this time. The Room, meals, and bath were all perfectly satisfying. It has become one of the Ryokan I want to visit many times.

    An inn where you want to stay for consecutive nights

    The inn is rich in nature and offers a quiet stay. I would love to stay for consecutive nights again. Thank you for upgrading our room. The open-air bath in that room was larger than the one in the public bath and the temperature was just right, which was great for me as I don't like long baths. You can enjoy the sauna at Rakan no Yu in the Mifuneyama Rakuen Hotel, which has won the Sauna Shuran Grand Prix for three consecutive years. It is free for guests staying at Chikurintei. There were limited-time events such as projection mapping in the garden on the premises, but I also recommend it for those who want to spend a quiet and relaxing time. The food was delicious, and I felt the spirit of the head chef. Also, the service was excellent, and I had a pleasant stay. The building is a bit old and there were some poorly fitted areas, but I heard they are gradually making repairs. I would definitely like to visit again.

    The room and the meals were excellent.

    I had a very comfortable stay. The room was well-cleaned, and the view was fantastic. Every dish I tried was delicious, and it was a complete healing experience for both my mind and body. The staff took care of us with just the right touch, allowing us to enjoy our stay at the inn in a relaxed and natural manner. I highly recommend this accommodation.
