    Acceptable if it fits.

Because I stayed the next day at a different Onsen Accommodation in Niigata Prefecture, this review may sound stricter. First, the Accommodation seemed to be under renovation, and a relatively large portion was covered with protective sheeting; the covering was even visible from the open-air bath. I may have missed it, but if the property’s atmosphere is a key selling point, this should be stated much more clearly on the Reservation page. The Room was not pre-cooled (I turned on the air conditioner myself before the staff member noticed, yet they somehow assumed it had already been on), and perhaps due to high humidity there was a musty smell. I ended up having to tolerate it for several hours until the humidity stabilized. I was also surprised there was no welcome drink. Even if the lounge offers free drinks, being guided to an area far from the lounge with insufficient explanation made it impossible to know. On the way to the Room, they should explain not only amenities but also that yukata are not provided in-room—this would save guests from having to go back out just to pick them up. The meals had a good concept, but many parts felt like an extension of home cooking. I never expected to be charged extra for pickled plums in a region known for its rice. The baths were good. What bothered me most was that the covered walkway leading to massages and private baths received no attention at all. Despite being so wet, there were no slippers anywhere; wherever you walked your socks inevitably got soaked, which was extremely unpleasant. Another guest mentioned exactly this in the changing room as well. If space makes it difficult, there should at least be measures to prevent rainwater from getting in. As for the highly rated free-space services: at this price range they are neither rare nor exceptional. This is a harsh review overall, but one positive note—the woman working in the dining area showed excellent hospitality and was truly wonderful.

    It was a wonderful Ryokan!

I stayed here between work commitments, and the charming building and interiors, attentive service, and delicious meals were all wonderful. There are several Rooms; I stayed in a higher-grade Room with an open-air bath (a suite type), and the garden was beautifully calming. Overall, I was very satisfied. That said, perhaps because it was so good overall, a few small issues stood out. Details below: - The Accommodation was undergoing interior renovations due to snow damage. It was low-key, but there was some noise, and the view of part of the Facility included scaffolding sheets. If so, I would have liked to be informed before my stay. I also felt a discount could have been considered; instead, the dynamic pricing was higher than the lowest rate. Sorry to say this affected my scores for the Room and Facility. - This might be understandable at the lowest price tier, but even though my Room with an open-air bath is one of the more expensive options, there were only bottled water in the Room—no complimentary drinks or welcome snacks. At this price point, those kinds of complimentary services feel standard. Aligning services with entry-level Rooms made me feel it diminished the Ryokan’s prestige. - On the other hand, there were complimentary drinks and snacks in the lounge—so that helped. - Why was the floor on the way to the private open-air bath wet? My socks felt unpleasantly damp... - The “snow-country gastronomy” concept is interesting. The flavors were slightly mild overall but tasty (except for main Wagyu). I appreciated having rice cooked in a pot, but I would have loved a simple service like turning leftover rice into onigiri for a late-night snack. - Breakfast was a half-buffet style. A buffet may be more typical of lower-priced Accommodations, so perhaps it can’t be helped. - Still—it was delicious! I’ve written quite a few minor complaints here, but it was good enough that I’d like to return when visiting this area again. There aren’t many luxury Accommodations around here in general, so this place is valuable. In short: I think value for money is currently somewhat lacking (especially for mid-range Rooms and above). With stronger premium touches in that area, it could become an outstanding Accommodation. I’m looking forward to seeing improvements.

    Thank you for your support.

This was our second stay. Traveling with my elderly parents can be challenging, but they were very happy. We were kindly shown to our Room early once it was ready, so we could relax and take our time. The large public bath was almost private when we used it, which was wonderful. We would love to stay again if we have the chance. Thank you very much.

    For my younger sister’s birthday.

Everything was beautifully picture-perfect, and we spent two very peaceful days enjoying coffee and drinks. Even on a rainy day, the garden greenery and the pond’s surface looked even more vibrant, making for a wonderfully relaxing time. Thank you for arranging the birthday card. We would love to visit again.

The Onsen and the Facility are wonderful, but the food was disappointing.

The Onsen, Room, Facility, select shop, and bar were comfortable, but the dinner was extremely disappointing and felt like it had been prepared in advance. Although it was a full-course meal, the fish was cold. The meat—a low-temperature roast of A5-grade Niigata beef—was tender, but overly greasy and lacked flavor. The clay-pot rice also seemed to have been cooked earlier; it was served in a small portion and had gone cold. If it is difficult to serve each guest at the right timing, I think it would be better to give up on a course format and instead serve dishes as they are ready. I also added the sake pairing; while the sake itself was good, it did not match the food at all, so calling it a pairing felt unrealistic. I recommend booking this Accommodation with No Meals Included or breakfast only, and dining out for dinner.

    Wonderful Accommodation

This is a wonderful Ryokan created by relocating a traditional old house. The calm-toned building and quiet background music were very soothing. The Japanese-Western fusion cuisine was also excellent. Although it’s an old house, the overall feel is modern and unlike other Ryokan—perfect for adults to relax and unwind. In the large public bath, only small towels are provided, so you need to bring bath towels from your Room, but there isn’t much space to hang them. There are free drinks in the lounge, but it would be even better if there were a coffee machine in the Room. Also, while the season was pleasant this time, the Room felt quite chilly in the morning; I wonder how it is in winter. Still, it was charming enough that I’d like to stay in a different category of Room as well.

    An Innovative Ryokan in Echigo-Yuzawa

I stayed here after hearing it is an innovative Ryokan around Echigo-Yuzawa. I couldn’t join the activities, but there is a wide variety available. The Room with a kotatsu was great, and the building and shared areas also had a nice Japanese feel. The food was high quality, and I liked that you can choose your breakfast. That said, it felt strongly geared toward inbound travelers, so as a Japanese guest I felt a bit out of place. Since it was winter in Niigata, I tried to order hot sake, but the bartender seemed busy serving foreign guests and appeared reluctant. The large public bath was noisy due to a family of foreign guests; I should have gone at a different time. Also, the hallway floors were wet at times, so I think staff should check them more regularly. Sorry for the harsh comments.

    Staying here during ...

Staying here during a time of deep snow was wonderful. I had wanted to visit this Accommodation for a long time, and I truly appreciated the convenient access (Shuttle Service) and the relatively reasonable price. While the property preserves the charm of a traditional old house and also incorporates modern touches, one issue in this region is that the heating inside the building was far too weak, and it was cold. The hallway and changing area were especially cold; I would like you to provide warmer items such as thicker hanten jackets, and I also felt that additional measures against cold feet are needed. The heating in the Room worked somehow, but I wished there had been a kotatsu. The toilet and wash area were also much too cold. The snow-viewing bath felt amazing and was the perfect refreshment. I was able to experience how wonderful a snowy region can be, so next time I would like to visit in early summer or early autumn.

    It’s cold everywhere.

The path from the parking lot to the Accommodation is dangerous to begin with. In unfamiliar snow, I could only feel anxious about an Accommodation where neither my luggage nor my own safety can be protected. The Room is kept warm, but the hallways are freezing cold, and I was afraid to use the in-room open-air bath or the private open-air bath because it felt like I might suffer heat shock. You can’t even walk down the hallway to the public bath without socks. As a result, most people end up using the public bath, so while it’s not exactly overcrowded, there always seems to be someone there. In the public bath, the indoor water is lukewarm and the outdoor one is quite hot. It may come down to preference, but I spent almost all my time in the outdoor open-air bath. There are plenty of snacks set out on the earthen-floor area, but quality-wise it’s basically just large bags of snacks poured into big jars. If that’s all it was going to be, I would have preferred to buy my own snacks beforehand. Disappointing. It seems they’re available from 7:00 to 24:00, but in the morning cookies and bread were placed out before breakfast; I felt these would make more sense if they were put out in the evening instead of in the morning. Sake and plum wine are served from 5:00 p.m., so dinner at 7:30 p.m. seemed to be busy. If you drink alcohol, you’d want 7:30 p.m., right? I read Reviews before visiting and opinions were mixed; indeed, for this price point, amenities aren’t well stocked. The hair dryer was also mediocre. I was surprised—single beds these days!? In a place this cold, having only one comforter made me uneasy. One night we even turned off all heating devices before sleeping (as we usually do), and it was cold. Even inside within-the-Room corridor areas were unbelievably cold—I thought heat shock could happen just from going to the toilet. Dinner was described as a full-course “snow country gastronomy” meal. It wasn’t piping hot, and staff only told us “please enjoy it while it’s hot” just once. That said, for dinner, the Uonuma Koshihikari rice tasted outstanding. Breakfast is a half-buffet style meant for making rice bowls over rice dishes , so it felt difficult simply eat plain rice; I regretted not choosing something other than a bowl-style meal. Onthe plus side ,it wasn’t crowded . I’ve stayed at many places ,but choosing an Accommodation really is difficult . I don’t think I’ll return . If they had explained aboutthe sweets outside beforehand ,I might have gone— that part alonewas disappointing .

It was a wonderful traditional Japanese house Accommodation. The hospitality and service were attentive, and we were very satisfied. We enjoyed a delicious dinner featuring seasonal ingredients. One concern was that the shower water pressure was weak, and the indoor bath temperature also felt a bit low. We also thought breakfast would have been more enjoyable with a wider variety of side dishes. Overall, it was a lovely space and very relaxing.

    Well-equipped public facilities

The public areas were well equipped, including a cozy lounge where you can freely enjoy coffee and alcoholic drinks. However, there was no welcome tea or sweets on arrival, which was disappointing. The view from the guest room window was not very impressive, with rice fields and private homes in sight. The Onsen was pleasant, but I noticed a heavy oil smell, possibly from heating. The massage chairs required an additional fee. Dinner featured small portions of delicious appetizers, followed by satisfying fish and meat dishes that were very tasty. For breakfast, I enjoyed making my own seafood rice bowl.

    We had a relaxing holiday!

Thank you very much for taking such wonderful care of us. The building, relocated from a traditional old house, was beautiful, and the interior was impressive as well—an extraordinary experience that truly let us appreciate the charm of a Japanese home. The staff’s service was calm and warm, which made us feel very comfortable. In the atmospheric lounge, complimentary drinks and sweets were served, and there was also an alcohol service during limited hours, which my husband especially enjoyed. After soaking in the open-air bath to our heart’s content, spending time on the high-backed sofa in the lounge—enjoying a drink while looking out at the garden or reading—felt truly luxurious. We enjoyed the baths and a delicious meal so much that we ended up falling fast asleep in bed when we had planned to bathe again. The next morning, we soaked in the bath while it was still dark outside, then relaxed on the lounge sofa again with a view of the garden and enjoyed a satisfying breakfast. It was a holiday that left us feeling refreshed from deep within. What follows is purely our personal impression; preferences may vary, but we would like to share a few points that stood out to us as well. Regarding dinner: We made our Reservation for 7:30 p.m., as we were told it would be “busy,” and went to the dining area at that time. Most of the window-side tables with garden views already appeared “used,” with dishes and glasses still left on them. Although it is such a spacious venue, we were guided to an area where other guests were seated on both sides, which was slightly disappointing—though we understand this may have been for serving efficiency. Also, it seemed those used tables were not cleared during our meal. The food itself was delicious. However, while it looked lavish—with nine small plates served all at once—the grilled fish had already become cold by then. It was still tasty even when cooled, but that made it all the more unfortunate. The sashimi portion was very small and had some fishy odor. We found ourselves thinking that even without nine plates, one simple yet substantial dish would have been enough. In addition, there were many starchy items overall: sweet potato as an appetizer; taro and sweet potato yokan among the nine plates; and even dessert featured pumpkin—so our impression was simply that there were quite a lot of potatoes/squash. We ended up listing some minor details here and there; however overall we truly had an indulgent and wonderful weekend stay. This is an Accommodation we would love to visit again soon.

The property is full of charming traditional features throughout and is wonderful.

The Room, meals, and baths were all wonderful. We stayed in Suite Room D. One thing I wished for was power outlets on both sides of the bed. Also, because the open-air bath and the indoor bath are separated within the Room, it felt a little inconvenient to use. It would have been nice to have a shower and washing area next to the open-air bath.

    It was the best ever.

Although the staff seemed a bit short-handed, we were able to relax and enjoy a very comfortable stay. The meals made the most of the ingredients’ natural flavors, and everything was delicious—we were completely satisfied. It was the best food we have had at any Hotel we have stayed at so far. The Room lighting was a little too dim, and the air felt dry, so we would have appreciated an air purifier with a humidifier. We would love to find an opportunity to visit again.

The Room facing the pond looked wonderful in the photos, and it was worth the splurge. The pond side has large floor-to-ceiling windows, offering a picture-perfect view even from the bed. It was still a bit early for autumn leaves, but the greenery was beautiful as well. There are plenty of places to sit in the public areas, and although there must have been many guests, it was quiet and relaxing, allowing us to fully enjoy the atmosphere of the Accommodation. This is an Accommodation I would love to stay at for several days.

    Accommodation Impressions

“Ryugon” was a charming Accommodation with a classic, atmospheric presence. Upon entering, you are greeted by a stately living area with impressive exposed beams, creating a calm ambiance that helps you forget the fatigue of travel. The Onsen felt slightly lukewarm in the large public bath, but the open-air bath was exceptional. I could soak while enjoying the surrounding scenery, and since the water temperature was set higher than in the indoor bath, it warmed me thoroughly and truly relieved my travel weariness. As for dining, dishes were served using ingredients rooted in the local climate and culture, and I was deeply moved by their delicate yet comforting flavors. It was a wonderful meal that let me fully appreciate the blessings of the region. The only lingering concern was soundproofing in the Room. Perhaps because the wall between rooms is thin, I could hear conversations from next door quite clearly. Unfortunately, during my stay there were very lively guests nearby, and their voices carried late into the night and again early in the morning, making it difficult to spend time quietly—this was my only regret. Overall, it was a wonderful Ryokan full of charm and character.

A friend who often stays at Ryugon had recommended it to me, but I rarely had the chance to visit—this time I finally did. My first impression was that I wish I had visited Ryugon before the renovation. The Room has a classic feel. The moment I entered, there was a musty smell, and I would have appreciated some consideration for fragrance, such as lighting incense. The check-in process also felt rushed. Upon arrival, I wanted a more relaxed welcome. The Onsen and the meals were good, but the staff’s explanations felt insufficient. Overall it was pleasant, and if I have the opportunity, I would like toina again.

    The meals are overly elaborate.

This Accommodation feels well-suited to today’s times, and overall we were satisfied with the modern renovation of the traditional house. The points that concerned us are as follows: - The seasoning of the fish and meat at dinner felt inconsistent. While the dishes were elaborate and clearly time-consuming, the fish was lightly seasoned and the meat was quite sinewy, so it wasn’t to our taste. Also, having pumpkin, sweet potato, and chestnut all together in the appetizers (three starchy items in a row) was hard to understand. - Breakfast consisted mostly of rice accompaniments, with too few main side dishes. - The staff’s dish explanations felt overly awkward. - It’s a shame that the area around the open-air bath is overgrown with weeds. - The in-room open-air bath seems simply installed; there is no place to change clothes, which feels like a missed opportunity. - Refills in the lounge—one of this Accommodation’s highlights—were not handled unless we specifically requested them. - It would be better to replace all lobby tatami seating with chairs.

    Hospitality

As someone who both hosts and is hosted, this was my first visit. The black-based, imposing entrance and the atmospheric interior evoke a snowy region. While it has the charm of an old traditional house, it is also very clean, with a calm and relaxing space throughout. The staff greeted us politely. Each dish—including the drinks—was carefully explained, and everything was delicious, made with local ingredients. The Facility is well equipped, and checkout at 12:00 the next day made it an ideal place to spend a precious day off. Seeing is believing—please do visit. It was a wonderful Accommodation in my hometown.

    Tranquility....

This Ryokan uses a traditional old house, but the interior has been renovated and feels clean and well maintained. Even though drinks and alcohol, as well as cookies and bread, are provided complimentary, the quality was excellent. The homemade plum wine in particular is outstanding. Above all, I feel its greatest appeal is the quiet atmosphere. There’s no constant hustle and noise—just a place where you can truly feel time slow down. With only a small number of guests accommodated overall, it’s perfect for anyone who wants to relax at an Onsen and unwind at their own pace.

    A Refreshing Getaway

To get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and recharge in a calm setting, I stayed here over a long weekend. The hospitality was attentive throughout, making this an Accommodation I genuinely want to visit again. I felt refreshed in both body and mind, and deeply relaxed. Thank you very much.

An Accommodation You’ll Want to Return To

This was my second stay—I visited for the first time last year and wanted to come back. The building has a calm, relaxing atmosphere, and the hallways and Rooms are all barrier-free, so you can move around without tripping. In the irori lounge and bar area, you can enjoy coffee, tea, and water anytime. In the evening, Hakkaisan sake and plum wine are also available free of charge. They also offer rice crackers and Western-style sweets from a confectionery maker in Niigata Prefecture! For dinner, you can take your time enjoying a full-course gastronomic meal made with local ingredients, along with drinks. Vegetables, fish, meat, soup, rice— until you’re completely full! Breakfast includes an à la carte menu plus a buffet where you can eat as much as you like. There are plenty of local dishes as well, so it’s easy to overeat. Each Room has gentle lighting that’s easy on the eyes, making nights very comfortable.

    A Perfectly Satisfying Summer Vacation

Everyone on the team—from the Shuttle Service, front desk, restaurant, and housekeeping staff—was welcoming and pleasant, and we thoroughly enjoyed both breakfast and dinner (dinner portions were a bit large). In the lounge, sake and plum wine are served in the evening, while pastries and cookies are available in the morning; everything was delicious and a lovely touch. Throughout the property, you can enjoy art in many places, and we were delighted to find spots where you can relax while looking out over the rice fields right in front of you. The courtyard view is also outstanding and very relaxing. The Classic Suite was conveniently located near the large public bath. The lush scenery of Mount Sakado was beautiful as well, making our stay truly satisfying.

    I had a relaxing time.

We had a truly wonderful stay in a beautiful space and felt completely satisfied. We were also very happy with the full-course meal. If I had to mention anything, there were three of us staying but only two toothbrushes were provided. Also, we went to the dining room right at breakfast start time, but it was disappointing that there was no response when we greeted the staff with “Good morning.” The free drinks, alcohol, and morning sweets were great as well. It would have been even better if they included more items unique to Niigata. Overall, we would love to visit again.
