    Best value for money

    Since we stayed on weekday nights (Monday and Tuesday), it was quiet and reasonably priced. If possible, I’d love to stay for about a week to work or read and enjoy the feeling of living in a vacation home. It can’t be helped, but it would be perfect if there were a large bath.

    It no longer has the charm of the old “Highland Lodge” and has been completely changed for the worse.

    We visited as a couple to mark our 20th wedding anniversary this month, after holding our wedding at the Hütte & Music Hall. This was our first stay since COVID, and also our first stay since the management changed. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a very disappointing stay. This will be a long review, but as long-time fans of this highland lodge, we would like to share our thoughts. The biggest issue was the hospitality. Perhaps there were not enough staff at either the front desk or the restaurant; the smiles felt forced, and we did not sense warmth or genuine kindness in their manner. We made a Reservation for the same Room we stayed in 20 years ago (Junior Suite), but perhaps this category is not used often. The Room had a musty odor and felt gloomy. The view bath was fully visible from the walking path; even the partition curtain smelled, and the bottom of the bath was extremely slippery and dangerous. This applies to Facilities overall, including the Hütte: maintenance did not seem adequate, giving an almost abandoned atmosphere. It made us sad. We only had breakfast, but over recent years both quality and quantity have declined. We could tell it was prepared with care. The flavors suited our taste, and we enjoyed it. Finally, neither at check-in nor at check-out did anyone mention anything about our wedding. They likely do not manage that kind of guest information. For us, these are happy and beautiful memories from the past—and because we do not want to lose them, we have decided this will be our last visit. As people who truly love historic Resort Hotels, this property has unfortunately dropped off our top list. For reference: “Art Hotel Ishigakijima,” in the same group, has also changed dramatically compared with its days as Hotel Nikko Yaeyama. Times change.

    A Sky Full of Stars, the Ultimate Retreat

    I visited for the first time, hoping to quietly and leisurely enjoy a sky full of stars. It turned out to be absolutely the right choice. From the moment we arrived, the staff’s warm smiles—and their cheerful, friendly service at Restaurant Hanagoyomi while we waited to check in—immediately put me at ease and made me feel glad I came. At Hanagoyomi, I enjoyed herbal tea and their new apricot cream puff. The apricot cream puff had a refreshing tartness and was perfectly balanced—not overly sweet. The chamomile tea was also delicious. I liked it so much that I wished it were sold in the shop so I could buy some. The Junior Suite Room was spacious and spotless. High ceilings, large windows, and terrace seating as well. You can look out over the trees and distant mountain ridges. Even from the window in the large bathroom, you can see the trees. The next morning brought mist and rain. The flowing white mist and rain-lit trees were beautiful—I couldn’t stop looking. After the rain, there was even a lovely rainbow. With the morning rain clearing the air, that night revealed a sparkling sky full of stars. It was incredible. I heard other guests were also amazed by how beautiful the stars were that night. A few additional notes: ■ Mats and chairs for lying down to watch the sky: available for rental (fee applies; Reservation required) Flashlights: free rental ■ On-site shop A great selection of Japanese wine and sake. Perfect for enjoying slowly in your Room. ■ Multipurpose hall A program about concert halls was being shown. Highly recommended. ■ Dinner Delicious with generous portions I especially loved both days’ hors d’oeuvres, as well as Day 2’s grilled fish and mushroom potage (I love seafood and mushrooms). Watching mountains glow at sunset through large windows, then enjoying dinner with wine… simply wonderful. ■ Breakfast A tasty, fun buffet The Shinshu trout was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Day 2’s clam chowder was also excellent. Even the milk tasted outstanding—as expected. You may also spot squirrels or wild birds outside the window. ■ Lobby fireplace Lit from around 3:00 PM until bar service ends In colder seasons, it may be lit earlier as well. The thick beams and pillars are beautiful too. ■ Walking map Available at reception or near the restaurant entrance It includes not only various walking routes, but also descriptions of bird calls and plants— more than enough content in this one booklet alone. ■ What other guests said Some repeat visitors spoke very highly of this Accommodation as well The staff’s service was truly excellent, and I would love to visit again.     Relax during Golden Week

    You can enjoy nature and delicious meals. We were able to spend a relaxing time while looking out at the snow-capped Yatsugatake Mountains. The north-facing Room had a view of greenery from the window, and at night we could gaze at the stars—it was very nice.

    A Relaxing, Enriching Holiday in a Pristine Highland

    Thank you very much for giving us such a wonderful stay. In the refreshing air, we were able to enjoy a sky full of stars at night, adorable visits from squirrels and wild birds, and delicious meals unique to this area—fresh vegetables and fruit, as well as flavorful dishes rich in mountain vegetables. The moving concert in the beautiful music hall that blends into nature was also outstanding. Thanks to the attentive hospitality of all the staff, we were able to spend a truly fulfilling time. We would love to experience this place in a different season as well. We would be delighted if we could stay with you again. Sincerely.

    It was a wonderful trip.

    It was a very quiet place, and we were able to spend time in an extremely comfortable and luxurious space. At breakfast, we could see wild birds and Japanese squirrels right in front of us (through the glass), and our child was delighted to have an experience unlike anything usual. The food also felt very fresh, and everything—from the meat to the salmon—was exceptionally delicious. At night, we were guided under a sky full of stars and enjoyed a wonderful atmosphere. The Facility felt a bit old, but the service was outstanding; overall it was high quality, and we had a valuable experience. Someday we would like to visit again—next time to enjoy the concert as well.

    Larch Forest and Starry Sky

    The walking trails around the Hotel are wonderful. The forests at the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains and the sound of wind through the bamboo grass were very soothing. The starry sky at night was truly beautiful. We enjoyed a relaxed dinner in the main dining room, and had a hearty breakfast as well. It’s not an Onsen, but the Room bath faces the woods and was lovely. It’s a classic Hotel, and we had a great holiday.

    Le Plateau

    The Room and other Facilities were as usual, but there were many families staying, and we were bothered by the sound of children running in the hallway and doors slamming. We understand that, due to the building’s structure, noise tends to carry easily, so we hoped parents would be a bit more mindful. In addition, since the main dining restaurant Le Plateau was closed for the winter season, dinner was served at Hanagoyomi; however, as mentioned above, there were many children and we could not enjoy a calm meal, which was very disappointing. Until now, we had an image of this Accommodation as a quiet place for adults, but this time we noticed several changes that altered the feel of an adult highland Resort Hotel—for example, aside from Plateau being closed, the breakfast buffet selection also felt limited—making this stay very disappointing overall. We have been staying here for quite some time and consider Le Plateau to be an important “main dining” venue for Kogen Lodge. We hope it will be open during the winter season next year as well.

    A Luxurious Escape to Do Nothing in the Hidden Retreat of Yatsugatake

    I stayed one night at Yatsugatake Kogen Lodge for the first time in several years. As it was a weekday in winter, there weren’t many guests, and there were no international travelers at all, so I was able to relax quietly at an unhurried pace. Last time I stayed in the Central Wing, but this time I chose a Classical Room in the North Wing, which has a long history dating back to the lodge’s opening. The Room is small, but with its sloped ceiling and generous height—and a balcony—it felt very calm and comfortable. Although it’s a wooden building, it’s impressively well-sealed; I even turned the heater down to low. Dinner at Hanagoyomi wasn’t flashy or “Instagrammable,” but the dishes were carefully prepared and delicious. The paired wines were also surprisingly reasonably priced for a Hotel. Perhaps because villa owners also come by for meals, all of the staff feel very welcoming while still maintaining attentive professionalism. Prices jump significantly in summer and on days when there are concerts at the music hall, but next time I’d like to visit in summer. It may be Yatsugatake, but I felt that the overall guest atmosphere is actually more similar to Karuizawa.

    A Nostalgic Place

    I have relatives who once settled in Shizen-kyo, and I’ve been visiting Yatsugatake for over 30 years. Of course, it’s cool and comfortable in summer, but this time we stayed so I could show my husband the snowy scenery of Yatsugatake. I had used the lodge’s restaurant and bar before, but this was my first time staying overnight. The Room was simply arranged, and the view of the mountains from the window brought me a sense of calm. We were able to see deer, squirrels, and wild birds. Above all, the starry sky was wonderful. It might have been even better if there had been deeper snow. The dinner salad with Shinshu trout was delicious. We also enjoyed drinks at the bar. It was a stay that brought back many memories and left me feeling nostalgic and a little sentimental. This is a precious place that I hope never changes. Thank you very much.

    It was a truly wonderful accommodation.

    I stayed at the accommodation to provide shuttle service for my son's year-end ski training in Yatsugatake. It was our first stay, but it became a truly wonderful family memory. We were captivated by the quiet environment, fresh air, and serene atmosphere. For dinner, we enjoyed French cuisine, which was absolutely delicious. The dishes made with ingredients from Yatsugatake were prepared with great care and skill. It had been a while since we had French cuisine, and the heartfelt flavors deeply impressed our entire family. The staff provided courteous service with a sense of professionalism that was both subtle and sincere. We would love to visit again in the future. Thank you very much!

    Stay in the Hotel

    We booked a Junior Suite for a cozy stay at the Hotel. The room had large windows offering beautiful views of the snowy landscape. The bathroom also featured big windows, allowing us to enjoy the scenery while relaxing with fragrant bath salts. Dinner was a full-course French meal, and every dish was delicious. At breakfast, we loved watching squirrels and birds come for food from the dining area—an unforgettable experience. We enjoyed our time entirely within the Hotel without needing to go anywhere else.

    Delight in the cuisine, nature, and starry skies.

    I watched the broadcast of "Tabi Salad" and booked a weekend accommodation plan with a special cocktail. After dealing with highway traffic and stopping by Seisenryo for soft serve ice cream, I arrived around 4 PM and received a detailed explanation during check-in. The room was a South Wing Standard Twin, spacious enough for comfort. Dinner was at the restaurant Hanagoyomi, featuring a full-course Western meal paired with sparkling rosé wine for a toast. The meal included fruit-filled salad, burdock soup, fish sauté, beef steak, and dessert—all delicious and satisfying in portion size. After dinner, there was a stargazing event where constellations were explained along with photography tips; even amateurs could take surprisingly stunning photos. I enjoyed the special cocktail at the bar afterward and had a relaxing time. The next morning's Japanese-Western buffet breakfast felt slightly limited in variety but featured made-to-order omelets that were exceptional. After breakfast, I strolled around the Hütte and Music Hall while enjoying views of Mt. Fuji. Upon checkout, staff kindly took my photo in front of the main entrance—an experience filled with warm hospitality that made this stay truly satisfying!

    Disappointing

    I was disappointed as my expectations were high. The food was simply terrible. I wonder if the famous artists who performed at the music hall also ate this food? There were many other small issues that caught my attention. It's a shame because the hotel has good aspects such as its atmospheric setting, rich natural surroundings, and a wonderful music hall. Perhaps it would be better to have experts conduct a thorough review and start fresh as a Hotel.

    This was my first time using this service.

    I stayed for one night with my mother and thoroughly enjoyed the luxury of doing nothing amidst the fresh air and natural beauty of the Yatsugatake Highlands. The cozy atmosphere of the lodge and the perfect level of hospitality from the staff made our relaxed trip even more fulfilling. The meal portions were just right for my mother, and everything was delicious. During a pleasant morning walk, we had a delightful encounter with a family of deer. We would love to stay here again!

    A classic and serene Hotel with a calm atmosphere

    We stayed as a group of three, including my parents. This hotel, once visited by the Emperor, offers a calm and serene atmosphere. The staff's smiles and excellent service made our stay very pleasant. The meals were elegant and delicious, leaving us fully satisfied. While it features private room baths instead of an Onsen or large public bath, this hotel is ideal for those who wish to enjoy a relaxing time in the refreshing highland air or couples looking to take leisurely strolls together. Nearby, there is a music hall that hosts concerts and events from late September to the end of the year, offering an opportunity to enjoy music and stargazing in the forest setting. I look forward to visiting again for another refreshing stay.

    The accommodation staff left something to be desired. Upon arrival, there was no greeting, and I was surprised to have to place my luggage on the floor myself. The same staff member handled both check-in and check-out but seemed inexperienced. Additionally, a senior-looking staff member at the counter did not greet us and appeared to just stand there, which was disappointing. Furthermore, the water pressure in the shower of the guest room was very weak. On a positive note, the restaurant servers were attentive, and the housekeeping staff greeted us with smiles. The garden was well-maintained despite bad weather, which made for a pleasant experience. I would like to visit again if given another opportunity; thank you in advance for your hospitality at that time.

    I had a very restful sleep.

    Despite not feeling my best and having a packed travel plan with early mornings and constant movement, I surprisingly found myself deeply relaxed here. The bed was comfortable, the air conditioning was perfect, and the overall atmosphere was calming, allowing me to sleep so well that I momentarily forgot I was on a trip upon waking up. Thanks to this restful sleep, I managed to catch the 9:30 AM shuttle service I'd reserved the day before—though it did lead to a rushed morning routine. The local souvenirs were delightful, especially the Jersey drinking yogurt which stood out as an absolute treat. The food and environment suited me perfectly, making me wish for a longer stay next time. The front desk staff were warm and welcoming; their hospitality added greatly to my experience. One minor issue was that the hairdryer had very low airflow—it surprised me at first—but it dried my hair faster than expected, so it wasn’t much of a problem in the end. However, dinner reservations required booking by 5 PM on the same day. Unfortunately for me, when I inquired during check-in at reception after arriving late afternoon, only one seat remained for a ¥9,000 course meal due to group bookings earlier in the day. This made it clear that dinner is not guaranteed for all guests unless pre-arranged—a bit surprising but manageable if planned ahead. I resolved this by having an early dinner around 3 PM followed by snacks from souvenir shops later in the evening; though hunger struck before bedtime at midnight! Thankfully this didn’t disrupt my sleep or affect how refreshed I felt for activities on subsequent days. Being near Mt. Yatsugatake’s base raised hopes of enjoying fresh tap water directly from faucets—but there seemed some pipe-related odor making direct drinking less appealing than anticipated (a slight letdown). Still overall positives far outweighed negatives throughout staying amidst such serene surroundings! If given another chance someday returning would genuinely excite bringing even greater appreciation toward everything offered here again soon hopefully! Thank you sincerely providing rejuvenating memorable experience altogether truly wonderful moments spent entirely appreciated thoroughly indeed!

    Nature of Yatsugatake

    The morning walk from Yatsugatake Lodge to Misuzu Pond was very pleasant. In June, the pink Kurinso flowers were incredibly delicate and beautiful. Next time, I plan to visit for a summer retreat. Someday, I also look forward to enjoying the winter scenery and stargazing at night.

    Neither good nor bad.

    I used it during skiing. I don't mind not having a large public bath, but I would like a larger bathtub in the unnecessarily spacious bathroom. The Room was spacious enough and convenient to use. As for the meals, I would like to see an improvement in quality, even if it means raising the price a bit. The quantity was sufficient, but...

    I learned about it when the concert hall was broadcasted on TV.

    I first learned about the music hall from a TV Tokyo program. When I quickly searched for what performances were available, I found Mansaku no Kai by Mansai Nomura and immediately applied. I was happy to be able to make a Stays reservation at the lodge as well. Although it was just one night, it turned out to be a very enjoyable vacation. Thank you very much.
