Your First Time at Gero Onsen

This long-established Ryokan has a wonderful garden, and we were soothed by three duck brothers and the koi. We were very surprised to see many foreign staff members, but everyone was friendly and welcoming with a smile. Thank you very much.

It was spacious and very clean!

Thank you very much for your hospitality. The property was thoroughly cleaned down to the smallest details, and I was able to relax. Fresh flowers were displayed in the Room, and although it faced the mountain side, we could still see the fireworks. It had a lovely atmosphere. The sauna temperature was not too high and felt just right. The cold water was also not too cold, which was great. I would love to stay again. Thank you very much.

    Hospitality

This is a wonderful Ryokan, but I did not have a very good impression of the service. It was raining heavily on the day, and when we spoke through the car window, rain came into the car and I could not understand the staff’s Japanese very well. The check-in process was also hard to follow in Japanese, and the yukata in the Room were not properly prepared (I wore what was left in the Room and was cautioned when I went outside). The staff were attentive during meals, which was good; however, it was very disappointing that the rice did not taste good. At checkout as well, they seemed to prioritize other guests, which left me feeling quite neglected.

This was our first stay, and both my spouse and I were very satisfied. The Room was spacious, there were many baths, and the breakfast buffet had a wide variety of dishes. We would like to stay again. Next time, we would like to include dinner as well.

    Thank you.

I was able to relax again this time. The meals and the Onsen were very pleasant and wonderful. I would love to visit again. Thank you.

Because the Accommodation is spacious, it was a long walk from our Room to all the Facilities. For elderly guests, it would be appreciated if the Room location could be considered a bit more carefully. In the changing area of the bath, there were no baskets and no door, so changing clothes felt unusual for us—it was our first time experiencing that. However, the Onsen was excellent overall, so it was good.

    I felt truly refreshed!

There are three types of Onsen, and all of them had the perfect temperature—we were very satisfied. Both the Chinese-style dinner and the breakfast buffet were delicious. The ginger ale–flavored shaved ice in the lobby lounge was especially refreshing and tasty, perhaps because it was so hot!

    A Four-Generation Trip

I visit Suimeikan a few times a year because I love the quality of the hot spring water. This time, an elderly grandfather was traveling with us, so we also had dinner at the Accommodation. We ordered a hamburger steak for the children’s meal, but it was disappointing that both the taste and portion size seemed smaller than before. I was also looking forward to ayu (sweetfish) as it’s in season, but it wasn’t served, which was very disappointing. However, the hot spring water quality is excellent, and I would like to come back for another soak.

I lost an envelope containing 60,000 yen in cash.

A wonderful Accommodation representing Gero Onsen After returning from our trip, we realized an envelope containing 60,000 yen in cash was missing. We had checked carefully to make sure we hadn’t left anything behind when leaving the Room, but about a week later we contacted the Accommodation just in case. We were told, “There were no lost items left in your Room,” so we gave up—however, the Accommodation later contacted us and said they had been keeping it as a lost item found near the lobby. They apologized for not confirming properly, and it was safely returned to us! This truly shows why it is such a renowned Ryokan. Thank you very much. We are a family of five, and the in-room dining was also excellent.

    Great value for money

I visit Gero Onsen every month, and this was my second stay at Suimeikan this year. Since it was an affordable Plan, I had no complaints and was satisfied to enjoy all three bath areas. The baths here are spacious, which makes my body feel relaxed. I visit Onsen all over the whole country, but I especially feel the therapeutic benefits of the waters in Gero. Rather than traveling, I use this place casually as a substitute for a public bath. Having an affordable Plan makes it easy to stay. I plan to make another Reservation somewhere again.

Our family has been staying here for four generations.

Our family has been coming here for four generations since the early days, and this time the timing worked out, so I visited with my mother and cousin on a trip for three. With its thoughtful design for elderly guests, meals that make the most of excellent ingredients in a satisfying yet not excessive amount, and a spotless bath area kept clean with frequent cleaning, it truly is a wonderful, prestigious Accommodation. Most places have one or two little moments that make you think “Hmm?”, but from arrival to departure everything was comfortable, making for an excellent stay. Next time, around autumn, I’m hoping to visit again on my own for a change of pace—or perhaps with just my son.

The meals and the bath were both very satisfying.

Perhaps my expectations were too high, but the guest room felt outdated and disappointing. I may have needed to think more carefully before making the Reservation. In hindsight, choosing the cheaper plan was a mistake. The three baths and the meals were flawless—truly wonderful.

    First-time experience

Arrived at the Accommodation around 3:30 p.m. on the day. The bath at Rinkokan is available from 5:00 p.m. Since dinner was reserved for 5:00 p.m., it was not possible to bathe after arriving and before the meal. Because I usually drink alcohol at dinner, I couldn’t bathe after dinner either. I didn’t like the atmosphere of the other baths at all, so I didn’t feel like using them, and in the end I went to bed without bathing that day. This was my first time experiencing something like this. Truly the worst.

Once again, the meals and the Onsen were wonderful, and we were able to relax at a leisurely pace. We look forward to visiting again. Thank you in advance.

    The toilet was extremely dirty.

The restroom floor tiles looked damp and felt unhygienic. The slippers were also very flimsy, with “Suimeikan” written on them in marker—though I don’t think anyone would take them home anyway. I first used the open-air bath, but the changing room walls were covered in dust. Bath towels can be used at any bath, but they were shockingly thin and stiff. I’d like the staff to try using the facilities from a guest’s perspective. We used the Anniversary Plan. The dessert plate was generous and nice, but there was a spelling mistake that made us laugh. At dinner, even when we tried to use the in-house voucher, it was charged to our Room instead, so we ended up using it on souvenirs we didn’t really want. We used the bath additive we received after returning home, but it left us wondering whether it actually had any effect. The only truly good point was the quality of the Onsen water. Even walking around Gero Onsen wasn’t enjoyable, as most places felt old and run-down Facilities.

Your First Time at Gero Onsen

I had wanted to visit for decades, and time just slipped by. The station is right near the Hotel, which was very convenient. I was moved by the historic photos dating back to the Onsen drilling in 1929—it truly is an Accommodation with a long history. At check-in, I was happy to be told, “We will upgrade your Room,” but it appeared to be the same Room as in the Reservation photos. Perhaps there was some misunderstanding?

Although the Room was non-smoking, it was disappointing that it smelled like cigarettes as soon as I turned on the air conditioner.\nEverything else was great.

A large Onsen facility—fun atmosphere, but...

The food is disastrous. Dinner is a Chinese set course. The staff give proper explanations, but the taste of every dish is… Then there’s the breakfast buffet. It feels like they’re cutting costs on everything—no matter what you eat. At both dinner and breakfast, judging by the reactions of people around us, everyone seemed to feel the same way. It’s remarkable that you don’t hear “delicious” from anyone anywhere.

It turned into a very disappointing trip, and I feel sorry for my family.

I booked because it didn’t say “breakfast buffet,” but it turned out to be a buffet for some reason. Dinner was also surprising: the meat was just arranged on a plate and we were expected to grill it ourselves. We went as a group of three, but were told to share two small hot plates between us. Other than that, it was just rice and pickles. Paying JPY 68,000 per person, this trip was honestly not worth it at all.

Since my main purpose was the Onsen, I was mostly satisfied.

There are three bath areas, and I was satisfied after soaking in each one. Dinner was also excellent, with carefully prepared dishes full of flavor. Since it was an inexpensive Plan, I have no complaints at all. It is close to the station and very convenient. I plan to make time to visit again. I have visited Onsen all over The whole country and am no longer interested in food, so my only purpose is the Onsen water itself.

    Neither good nor bad.

I think this Ryokan is easy to get to, with good access from Gero Station. As the title says, it was a Ryokan that was neither particularly good nor bad. We stayed one night from Sunday with two meals included for about 24,000 yen per person, so it felt like a fairly pricey trip and we were looking forward to it, but the meals seemed like a combination of pre-made items. The Room also had an odor—possibly from previous guests—like body odor (there was nothing visibly dirty, so we did not ask to change Rooms). The Room itself was clean. There are three Onsen facilities in the building, so we were able to use them without crowds, which I thought was a positive point. Also, many of the staff were foreigners, but everyone responded very politely.

    Excellent

The Room is very spacious. The view is wonderful, and we were able to enjoy both an open-air Onsen in the Room where we could relax while listening to the river, and an indoor hinoki-bath Onsen. The next morning, we could also see a beautiful sunrise from the Room. The starry sky at night was stunning as well. The silky Onsen water left our skin smooth. We upgraded (for an additional fee) to the Hida beef sukiyaki course; it was generous in portion and absolutely delicious. The attendant carefully cooks the first slice for you. Both dinner and breakfast are served in the Room, so you can dine at a relaxed pace. The futons were laid out in the bedroom, so even after breakfast we could soak in the Room’s Onsen and lounge around until just before check-out. The private Onsen in the Room was so amazing that we went in many times and didn’t have time to visit the public bath, so next time I’d like to try that as well. It was a truly wonderful Accommodation. When I visit Gero Onsen again, I would definitely like to stay here again.

    New Year's Family Trip

We, a family of five including my husband and I, our son and his wife, and our daughter, stayed here for a New Year's family trip. The Room had a spacious area with beds and a tatami space featuring a kotatsu, allowing us to relax comfortably. There were three baths available, each with its own unique charm that we thoroughly enjoyed. From the women's observatory bath, we could see the sunrise over the mountains, which was truly satisfying. The changing room had floor heating, making it warm and comfortable even after bathing.

    The difference in ro...

The difference in room service between Rinsen-kaku and other accommodations was surprising. We didn’t expect to be handed the key and told, “This is as far as we go,” before even getting on the elevator. My husband and I were left speechless. The smell in the indoor bath of Sansui-kaku’s open-air hot spring was concerning. However, the Super Dry Extra Cold beer at the lounge was excellent!

    A Long-Awaited Stay at Suimeikan

I stayed in the Aoi Room at Seiransou. Despite being the busy year-end season, the detached accommodation was quiet and peaceful. Dinner was served in the room, and since I had requested a table instead of a low dining table due to personal preference, they kindly prepared one for me. The sashimi I am not fond of was replaced with crab and steamed dishes, and the food was absolutely delicious. The private bath in the room had an indoor bath with a mild temperature and an outdoor onsen that was slightly hotter with free-flowing water—perfectly catering to individual preferences. The onsen left my skin feeling smooth no matter which bath I used—truly worthy of being one of Japan's top three famous hot springs. At the end, they even gave me tea and sweets as souvenirs, which I enjoyed on my train ride home. When I hesitated about walking from Suimeikan to the station, a staff member at the entrance kindly approached me and guided me to a shortcut to get there quickly. It truly was a comfortable hotel experience. I look forward to visiting again someday!

The room and Onsen were enjoyable, but the dining experience was disappointing.

The room was spacious and comfortable, but there were no pajamas provided—only a single yukata. The drink service in the room was minimal for the price: just green tea, shiitake tea, and two bottles of water. If staying at Rinkakaku, coffee should at least be provided. Meals were served in the restaurant, and both expensive rooms (staying at Rinkakaku) and cheaper rooms received the same meal quality, which felt like a standard cafeteria level. Even when ordering hot sake (atsukan), it arrived lukewarm (nurukan). Most staff seemed to be from countries where communication was difficult, making it frustrating to place orders. The breakfast buffet was comparable to that of a budget ryokan. We had looked forward to watching fireworks at night but couldn’t see them from our room despite having inquired about this beforehand; guidance on where they could be viewed would have been appreciated. It turned out to be an unpleasant birthday trip for my wife who wasn’t feeling well during our stay. This is a ryokan we will never visit again.

    Satisfied.

Stayed at the accommodation for the first time in over 20 years and was satisfied with the same great hot spring quality. The photo spots around town are also wonderful! I may not have noticed before, but I enjoyed viewing the various collections on display. It would be nice to enjoy matcha in the tea room next to the exhibition hall, even for a fee. Previously stayed at Rinzenkaku, but this time chose Suimeikan for its proximity to the large bath and shop. Both have their own merits, so it's best to make a reservation based on your needs. Arrived early and looked for a café in town but couldn't find one that suited my taste. Regretted not knowing about the pizza restaurant inside Suimeikan that looked delicious!

    For a long-established establishment,

No greeting from staff, attendants, or the manager. However, they did greet regular elderly guests. Even though I was waiting in line for check-in procedures and other front desk matters as instructed, an older man cut in line and was served first. It felt unfair. Stayed in a room renovated within the last few years for a Multiple Night Stay, but both baths had severe mold issues. Disappointed that there was no coffee among the room amenities. I’d prefer coffee over shiitake tea—perhaps it’s favored by regular elderly guests? The public bath is fairly standard but spacious enough to avoid feeling crowded even during busy times. The Hida beef with hoba miso took longer than expected to prepare but tasted delicious. Breakfast offered a wide variety of options and was enjoyable!

We were upgraded from the booked Room and enjoyed a spacious area around the sofa to relax comfortably. Soaking in the smooth hot water provided complete relaxation for both body and mind. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, making it a satisfying trip. However, in the oldest main building, the bathroom door did not close tightly, causing a slight toilet odor, which was the only disappointing point.
