    A good kind of laid-back vibe

    Stayed in the latter half of the summer holidays. I arrived a little before check-in, but I waited in the second-floor lobby (I think) reading a book with coffee and other drinks, and when it was time, a staff member came to call me. My Room was on the second floor. I was surprised because when I opened the door, the bed was right in front of me. It was a shame that Lake Chuzenji wasn’t visible from the balcony. The lake isn’t that far away, but the trees are very dense—though it’s my fault for assuming I’d be able to see it. The Room was compact, but it didn’t feel particularly cramped—just an appropriate size. It was comfortable enough. Dinner was a light dinner where you choose one main dish. The portion size felt just right (in a good way), and I enjoyed it. I hope this style becomes more common. The Onsen uses key-card access. A pleasant bath with a gentle sulfur scent. The open-air bath in particular is spacious, with a wide view of the sky—very relaxing. Overall, it was a great stay.

    Ideal for solo travelers

    I chose this as a solo trip destination to recover from summer fatigue. Unfortunately it rained, but the calm, slightly misty atmosphere felt perfect for a relaxing Hotel stay. True to a long-established Hotel, the Room had a classic style (yet the area around the bed had been renovated and was very clean), and I was able to fully unwind in the Onsen with its wonderful ambiance and water. I was a bit nervous having French dinner alone, but they seated me at a discreet table toward the back, so I could relax and enjoy it. Next time, I’d like to visit as a couple.

    I’m a repeat guest and a big fan of Kanaya. I keep coming back because I love an itinerary where I fully enjoy the nature of Oku-Nikko and then stay at the Accommodation. Sometimes I visit for lunch or a day-use Onsen, but this time I stayed overnight for the first time in a while. The Onsen is great, the meals are great, and it’s the best place to relax. The yukata has been replaced with Room wear, which was very comfortable. As a repeat guest, I was disappointed that the cookies that used to be provided in the Room are no longer available, and that the herbal water at breakfast is gone. Also, there’s no choice of meat dish for the light dinner—only beef stroganoff—so I’d be happy if you could offer more options (the beef stroganoff is very delicious too). Every time, it’s wonderful because I can truly relax here.

    The building and Facilities feel dated. At check-in, there was only one staff member at the front desk (handling something else), so I had to wait. Also, the front desk staff’s manner of speaking felt overly casual—we’re not friends (lol).

    It was very relaxing.

    I have stayed at Nikko Kanaya Hotel before, but this was my first time staying here for a walk along the shores of Lake Chuzenji. From the window, I could see the surface of Lake Chuzenji shimmering through the trees, and when I looked up, there was a deep blue sky... The Onsen and the meals were both excellent. The restaurant service exceeded my expectations. Next time, I would like to stay with my family or for a girls’ trip with friends.

    A relaxing and soothing stay.

    It felt like staying at a lakeside Hotel abroad—quiet, calm, and truly wonderful. The staff promptly helped with our luggage both on arrival and departure by car. The Onsen Facility feels a bit dated, but the open-air bath was comfortable. The sulfur smell is quite strong, so it may not suit those who are sensitive to it. The Room was spotless and thoroughly cleaned in every corner, and we really enjoyed the French full-course dinner. Breakfast in the morning also felt very elegant. Since there is nothing around the Hotel, we could see deer from the balcony at night, which made for another enjoyable moment. If I could make one request to the Hotel, I would love to have two chairs placed on the balcony. It was a very pleasant stay, and I would like to visit again in a different season.

    Seeking Coolness

    On the way up Irohazaka, it was so foggy we could barely see anything, and the mist lingered all the way to around Funanoeki Chuzenji. But near Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel, it was perfectly clear. A refreshing breeze was blowing, and the lake sparkling through the trees was beautiful—this really is one of the best places to visit in summer. I was a little worried by reports of bears in the area, but once we arrived we were able to enjoy Ryuzu Falls and Lake Yunoko as well. At night it was cool enough without air conditioning. The open-air bath while it’s still light out is also incredibly relaxing. Oh—and I was happy they properly built the outdoor stairs too. This time, because Lake Chuzenji’s water level had dropped, two sightseeing boat stops were skipped instead. So we rode a swan boat and paddled as hard as we could. It was fun.

    Relax at a long-established Hotel

    As expected of a long-established luxury Hotel. Excellent service and outstanding restaurants. We enjoyed a relaxing stay as a couple.

    Classic Hotel!

    ○What I liked ・The Onsen has wonderfully milky-white water. Even though it was midsummer, the high elevation made it cool and comfortable, so I could really enjoy the bath. The open-air bath was fantastic! ・Dinner was very delicious—completely satisfying. ・At dinner, they had Senkin and Hououbiden sake. Both are representative breweries from Tochigi Prefecture and can be hard to purchase. Thank you for letting me enjoy local sake. ○What was a bit disappointing ・Other Reviews mention that the view was great, but from my Room (3rd floor) I could see the road through gaps in the trees, and there was no view of the lake at all. Is the lake visible depending on the season? ○My personal request ・Since this is a classic Hotel, I think it would be better if guests followed a dress code at dinner. There were many people in T-shirts and some in shorts as well. For men, requiring collared shirts would be a good idea. Some may feel that’s too formal, but I think enjoying something out of the ordinary is part of traveling.

    Traveling with my mother

    I had been interested in this Hotel for a while and wanted to bring my mother, so we stayed here this time. The staff were pleasant and the Hotel was calm and wonderful. However, since there was a balcony, it would have been nice if chairs had been provided. (With two elderly guests, it was difficult to move the Room chairs in and out.) I would have loved to relax on the balcony with a book. As for the meals, the fish smelled a little, and I would have preferred the meat served more simply as well—this is just personal preference. The bath was excellent, and we were able to relax.

    It’s a wonderful, ch...

    It’s a wonderful, charming Hotel. However, there seems to be a smoking area near the lobby, and the smell of cigarettes was strong all the way to the elevator. Please take measures to address the odor.

    Stay during the Obon holiday period

    We used the shuttle bus from Tobu Nikko Station. Even during the Obon holiday period, it wasn’t crowded and the ride was comfortable. The Hotel staff were extremely courteous—just what you’d expect from Kanaya Hotel. The Room was spacious, and all Rooms face Lake Chuzenji. The balcony is lovely as well, but it gets chilly in the mornings and evenings even in summer, so a long-sleeved top is recommended. There is also a lounge where guests can enjoy coffee, tea, and more during their stay. The Onsen has a strong sulfur smell. The water is on the cooler side, so we could soak slowly and relax. Some parts of the Facility may feel a bit dated, but the classic atmosphere makes it hardly noticeable. This is a Hotel we would definitely like to stay at again.

    Renovated and comfortable

    The old bedding I’d been concerned about has been replaced with new ones. The exterior has been refreshed, and the “inside” has also been updated, making the stay more comfortable. From yukata to pajamas, from Room keys to key cards, and from a PIN code to a card for the large public bath—these small updates made my stay very pleasant. The service remains unchanged and attentive. I’d like to visit again next year.

    Seeking a Cool Escape

    To escape the Tokyo heat, I visited Oku-Nikko again this year. With concerns about bears, I chose this Hotel because both the open-air bath and the guest rooms felt safe and reassuring. It was my first stay in several years, and perhaps due to the renovation, the room, baths, and lounge were all very clean, making for a comfortable Hotel stay. The meals were delicious; if I had to mention one thing, I would have appreciated a Japanese-style option on the second night of my two-night stay. I would definitely like to stay again.

    We’re sorry the discounted Plan did not meet your expectations.

    We stayed with a special discounted Plan offered during renovation work, including one night with breakfast and dinner. It seemed the construction had already been completed, so there were no scaffolds or noise, and we enjoyed two quiet and comfortable days—almost to the point of feeling a bit guilty. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, and the service from the female front desk staff and everyone else was warm and pleasant.

    It was a calm Hotel ...

    It was a calm Hotel with a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere. The quiet of the morning, especially when viewed from the balcony early in the day, was particularly wonderful.

    The Hotel

    While many long-established Hotels and Ryokans these days feel oddly modernized and streamlined, with service becoming rather minimal, this Hotel was wonderful—upholding tradition and offering truly exemplary hospitality from the staff. I felt unwell during dinner and caused some trouble, but they arranged a wheelchair and looked after me throughout, for which I was very grateful. I would like to stay again, especially during the winter season when the fireplace is in use.

    Seeking a Cool-Climate Onsen Retreat

    It was a good Hotel. The building felt a bit old, but the Hotel staff were kind and welcoming, which made for a wonderful stay. The lounge is only available from check-in until the evening, so it would be nice to have a place to relax with coffee in the morning—takeaway is fine, even if I can enjoy it in my Room. Personally, I would also like drinking water provided in the bath area. Lake Chuzenji is a lovely place.

    A Relaxing Resort Hotel

    It was a calm Resort Hotel where we could relax comfortably. The meals were delicious and not overly large. The bath was a little lukewarm for me, but the cloudy water made it very pleasant.

    I was satisfied.

    Both the Hotel facilities and the room were well managed, and everything was kept very clean. As expected of a prestigious Hotel, both dinner and breakfast were delicious.

    We had a relaxing stay.

    The lake view from the window was wonderful. The meals were delicious, and we were able to relax. We felt the Hotel staff’s thoughtful hospitality, which made our stay very comfortable. We would love to visit again.

    Equal to or less than the price

    From my Room, I could hear the flushing or faucet noise from the toilet in the next Room, which was endlessly stressful. Dinner was a set course, but the explanations were rushed and hard to follow, and although there were many staff members, there was no particular sense of hospitality. At breakfast, they brought juice and after-meal coffee at the same time—it was so in the way it actually made me laugh. The Wi‑Fi is far too weak and disconnects constantly. The souvenir shop was already closed after we finished dinner (closes at 17:30), and the bath closes at 9:30 a.m. (check-out is 11:00) with no extra time; housekeeping even announced that it was already over. There were activities since Lake Chuzenji is right in front of you—there was SUP—but there was no guidance, just some random signboards with an address standing around. That said, the Onsen quality was outstanding.

    Staying during the summer vacation season

    I stayed here to enjoy the cool weather. This is a traditional Hotel, and both the building and the Room had a charming atmosphere, with attentive service throughout. The Onsen was at a comfortable temperature, allowing me to relax. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, featuring local ingredients. Opening the window let in cool air, and I felt refreshed.

    It was a comfortable stay.

    This is a classic Hotel overlooking Lake Chuzenji. It was my first stay in several years, and the rooms had been renovated and were even more comfortable. The tea service in the lounge was also excellent. In mid-July, Tokyo was experiencing extreme heat, but Oku-Nikko stayed below 30°C even during the day! At night, I slept with the windows closed and no air conditioning, and for the first time in a while I slept soundly. The Onsen was wonderful, and even the breakfast bread and jams were delicious. Next year, I’d like to enjoy a Multiple Night Stay and relax in the cool climate. Thank you for a very comfortable stay.

    Seeking a Summer Retreat

    It was a very hot day in the Kanto area, with temperatures close to 40°C, but around 6 p.m. when we arrived it was cool, and I was happy to feel a pleasant breeze. From our third-floor Room, Lake Chuzenji was only slightly visible through the trees. The meals were pricey as expected, but extremely delicious and satisfying. The Onsen had milky-white water, and the open-air bath in particular was outstanding. Overall, it was quiet and upscale, and we were able to relax and enjoy a peaceful stay.

    Classic Hotel.

    Unfortunately, due to the season of fresh greenery, we could not see Lake Chuzenji from the Room, which was disappointing. We were able to relax in the milky white hot spring bath. This is a Hotel we would like to stay at again if we have the opportunity.

    Full of classic international Hotel charm from a bygone era.

    With its furnishings, Hotel ambiance, and Room design, it had the dignified feel of a truly classical Hotel. Surrounded by nature, the Room was also very comfortable. Above all, the Onsen was absolutely wonderful. Even from the indoor bath, you could enjoy beautiful natural views, and the open-air bath blended seamlessly with nature—it felt like a very thoughtfully designed space. Since our Room was near an emergency staircase that served as a convenient route to the Onsen, we were able to relax in the Room… soak in the Onsen… and repeat again and again—truly enjoying it to the fullest.

    A quiet Hotel surrounded by greenery

    We stayed here as a couple. Our son and daughter-in-law, who had stayed before, told us that the Facility is old but the meals are delicious. The Room was cleaner than we expected and very comfortable. The bath was wonderful, with a pleasant sulfur scent. Above all, the meals were truly delicious. We were able to relax at our own pace and enjoy some quiet time. We would like to stay again. Thank you for taking care of us.
