    I was soothed by the blue sea, the sound of the waves, and this wonderful Accommodation.

    Because it was a three-day weekend right at the start of summer vacation, it ended up a little over our original budget—but we wanted to stay here so badly that we made the Reservation anyway. And once we actually stayed… it was worth every yen—no, even more than that. We had an absolutely wonderful time. The location was even better than expected: right in front of us were white sand and a blue sea. There were quite a few families and international guests, but at night it was very quiet. You can head straight to the beach from the Hotel, and everything was thoughtfully prepared—dedicated beach sandals, a washing machine, towels, and more. I also really appreciated that when you take off your slippers there, you can place them neatly into a shoe box labeled with your Room name—something I found especially reassuring as someone who’s a bit particular about cleanliness. The Room was truly spacious, spotless, and very functional. Everything felt refined from corner to corner—the washbasin, furnishings, wall colors, decorations—all beautifully coordinated and calming. A small detail, but the loungewear fabric was very soft and had buttons so it stayed in place comfortably. The semi-open-air bath in the guest room had excellent water quality and temperature. Being able to soak slowly while looking out at the ocean—with no insects flying around—was pure bliss. We enjoyed our in-room meals while chatting pleasantly with our attendant; everything was delicious. The simmered whole kinmedai (splendid alfonsino) was especially impressive—large and full of flavor—truly “this is Izu!” That said, personally I would have preferred beef as steak (even a small portion) rather than chilled shabu-shabu wrapped with vegetables. If many guests are older adults, it would be great if there were an option available even with an additional charge. Breakfast included many dishes as well—I ended up eating quite a lot first thing in the morning! Overall this Accommodation deserves high marks across the board; if I had to be strictly critical, dinner alone could have felt slightly more luxurious or surprising—something that makes you think “This is exceptional—I’ve never tasted anything like it.” Even so, it was such a wonderful Accommodation that I absolutely want to return again next year.     Once again, the refreshing early-summer breeze was wonderful.

    I’ve stayed several times at Tateshina Kaoru and really enjoyed it, so when I heard it had also opened in Shimoda, we stayed there to celebrate my wife’s birthday. It seems the former Tōtei has been renovated, and the cleanliness of the Room, the quality of the food (generous portions), the in-room bath (Onsen), and the service were all up to Kaoru’s usual standards. Best of all, with Irida Beach right in front of you, the panoramic bath on the 4th floor has an incredible view and was truly relaxing for both body and mind. Thank you very much. After swimming at Irida Beach during summer vacation, I’d love to stay again—but our preferred dates are already fully booked, so we’ll have to wait until next time. We’re looking forward to it.

    First time since the renovation

    It was our first return visit in a while, and while the familiar atmosphere remains, the facilities and layout are now even more comfortable. In particular, we loved that the Room bathroom is spacious and that it has been upgraded from regular hot water to an Onsen. At the newly added open-air observation bath, we enjoyed the beautiful ocean views by day and a sky full of stars at night in the clear air. We also appreciated the warm hospitality, and were happy that the main dinner dish—simmered splendid alfonsino—remains unchanged. If nighttime locking hours and checkout could each be extended by one more hour, it would be perfect.

    The ocean view right...

    The ocean view right in front of us was stunning! The meals were delicious and served in generous portions, almost too much to finish. Breakfast, in particular, had a large quantity—perhaps it could be slightly less. The bath offered a great view, and the morning soak was incredibly refreshing. However, the water temperature was quite hot! I added a lot of cold water to adjust it, but this might depend on personal preference. Overall, the staff were kind and attentive, making the experience perfect. I would love to stay here again. Thank you very much!

    The meals and Onsen are excellent, but the service and clientele are poor.

    The content of Shimoda itself is good, but the service by the waitress delivering the meals was overly familiar and not professional (the reception and young foreign staff left a good impression). Additionally, at the dining table, a man in what seemed like a "sugar daddy" couple became heavily intoxicated, singing loudly and shouting, which was very disappointing. As our child became frightened, we had to leave midway. Alcohol should not be served to such an extent that someone becomes excessively drunk; measures such as issuing warnings or separating seats are necessary. I plan to stay at a different accommodation next time.

    The best view from the Room and simmered golden eye snapper.

    The moment you enter the room and see the view of Shimoda Bay from the open-air bath, it truly feels like "the best view of a lifetime." The simmered golden-eye snapper served at dinner was impressively large, tender, and richly flavored—absolutely exquisite. The abalone and spiny lobster were also flawless. With breathtaking views, relaxing Onsen, and delicious meals, this stay was truly fulfilling.

    Excellent Location

    This was my first visit. The stunning beauty of the sandy beach and sea at Irida Beach right in front of the accommodation is breathtaking. The night sky full of stars is also captivating, making the location truly unbeatable. The facility is clean and stylish, while the hospitality has a charming countryside feel to it. Since it was a weekend, the price was luxurious, but I would suggest not expecting an all-inclusive service experience in this regard. The meals were excellent with generous portions and delicious flavors. The sashimi and simmered golden-eye snapper were particularly outstanding as expected. As many have mentioned, I hope check-out time will be extended to 11:00 AM in the future.

    It was a pretty good accommodation.

    I visited this accommodation for the first time, located right in front of Irida Beach. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t allow us to see a sky full of stars, but we were soothed by the beautiful ocean view. The room was new and had a clean atmosphere. The bath had windows that could be opened, creating a semi-open-air feel where you could enjoy the sea breeze while bathing. The meals were all delicious. The seasoning was perfectly balanced and had an elegant taste. There wasn’t anything to complain about overall. If I must say something, I personally felt it was a bit unfortunate that the meat for dinner became watery due to being cooked on a ceramic plate grill. For elderly guests, the portions might be too large; we couldn’t finish the simmered golden-eye snapper at the end of dinner, which was regrettable. Breakfast was also delightful—so much so that I found myself looking for their pickled plums in their shop! There’s an entrance leading directly to the beach with warm water shower booths available there—very convenient for those going into the sea. It’s an accommodation I’d love to visit again!

    Ocean View

    We stayed as a family of three. The ocean view right in front of the beach, the location, the building, room facilities, meals, and service were all excellent. The meals had such a variety that we couldn't finish everything for both breakfast and dinner. As a suggestion: While the breakfast was great with its generous portions, it would be nice to have lighter options (like rice, miso soup, and grilled fish). It would also be appreciated if lighter breakfast options could help reduce accommodation costs even slightly. It would be convenient if there were showers and changing rooms available for guests to use throughout the day after check-out. Thank you for your hospitality!

    Presidential Suite

    The children's meals for breakfast and dinner for 2 people at 26,000 yen felt a bit expensive, especially since most of it seemed to be frozen, which was disappointing. Additionally, the open-air bath being a circulation system had a slight odor, and it was too exposed to the outside, making it uncomfortable to use. Also, while it was advertised as being 30 seconds on foot from the sea with showers and changing rooms available, I wish guests could use these facilities freely regardless of time. On the first day, someone else's underwear was left behind in the area—perhaps due to cleaning schedules—which was unpleasant. While our stay started off great with good impressions on arrival day, we were left disappointed by the end.

    I would love to stay here again!

    I found this accommodation while looking for a place close to the beach and stayed here for the first time. The staff, facilities, and food were all excellent! The room was spacious and clean. A compact Refa hairdryer was provided, making it stress-free even for those with long hair. Although I couldn't take a long bath due to sunburn from the sea, the bathroom in the room was very comfortable, and I felt like soaking in it forever while enjoying the ocean view. I would love to stay here again next year!

    Almost perfect, but...

    We stayed as a family of four adults. The meals were served in the room, but meal times could not be chosen. Dinner was fixed at 6 PM, and breakfast at 8 AM. Having breakfast at 8 AM with a 10 AM checkout felt rushed. Additionally, the cleanup was quick and made us feel hurried. The staff serving the meals were very pleasant, so it seems to be the accommodation's policy. Although it is a lovely accommodation, this lowers satisfaction levels. For this price range, checkout should be at 11 AM. It’s truly an excellent accommodation, so it’s disappointing.

    The location is excellent.

    We stayed here as a family, choosing this accommodation based on reviews mentioning the beach. As expected, the private beach was amazing, and we enjoyed beautiful sunsets. The ice pops available in the lobby were a nice touch, but it would have been better if they were placed near the bath area. Dinner was quite average. The staff serving us could be described as casual at best or untrained and careless at worst. Although this is supposed to be a completely non-smoking facility, our room smelled of tobacco coming from the hallway. It seemed like smoke from employees taking breaks near the emergency stairs, which was very disappointing and unacceptable. The room's facilities were good, and I could overlook the casual service during dinner; however, I couldn't tolerate the tobacco smell. While check-in service was decent enough, it left an impression that attention to unseen details was lacking overall.

    Time flows on.

    It has changed significantly. My first visit was 31 years ago, in May 1992. Back then, the accommodation was called "Totei," a small and serene traditional Japanese ryokan nestled quietly by Irida Beach. It was truly a wonderful place to stay. I visited with my two children, aged 3 and 6, as a family of four for the first time. The next visit was ten years ago in March 2015. This time, it was just four of us—my mother, my wife, my son who still lived at home at the time (excluding my daughter who had already married). I remember staying in a spacious corner room. Despite more than twenty years passing since our first visit, the impression remained unchanged. This time around, after ten years, it’s just me and my wife visiting again. Time has passed; perhaps due to challenges like COVID-19 or other reasons beyond our knowledge—the management has changed along with the name of the accommodation itself. The exterior now features an intense Asian-inspired design that feels out of place compared to its former charm. However, the rooms have become larger with spacious private baths that offer comfort and relaxation during our stay—a definite improvement in terms of facilities. But what happened to the food? Based on recent reviews we read beforehand; expectations were high—but unfortunately fell flat entirely upon experiencing it ourselves. The initial appetizer platter lacked vibrancy—it looked dull without any shine or liveliness—almost lifeless like cold dishes from budget accommodations rather than something refined here! Taste-wise too: completely ordinary lacking creativity nor passion behind preparation whatsoever! One dish included green pea soup paired alongside sea bream which appeared overly artificial-green visually unappetizing while flavors felt rough overall execution disappointing further diminishing appetite altogether!     We stayed as a family with our 8-month-old child. We were initially worried since our child is still very young, but everyone was so kind, and we had a comfortable stay. The Room was spacious and clean, the private bath was excellent, and the beach being nearby made for a wonderful time. We would love to stay again if we have the chance. Thank you very much!

    Felt overpriced.

    Stayed with the upgraded plan featuring grilled abalone. **[Positive Points]** The room and its private bath offered a stunning ocean view, which was exciting as I rarely get to see the sea. The facility was clean, and there was an entrance to the beach, making it ideal for the swimming season. The temperature of the private bath in the room was adjusted lower, allowing for a relaxing soak. **[Disappointing Points]** The accommodation fee of approximately 100,000 yen for two felt overpriced. While free ice cream and coffee were available in the lounge, there were no other drinks, alcohol, or light snacks provided. The fridge in the room only had water and tea; no coffee machine either. There wasn’t even a makeup mirror (though higher-grade rooms seem to have one), and while there was an alcove space in the room, it wasn’t decorated at all—simple at best but underwhelming considering this is a 50,000 yen per person stay. Being right by the sea meant constant wave sounds that I wasn’t used to; it affected my sleep quality. **[Other Notes]** Meals were served at tables separated by partitions in a large dining area. Since I’m not fond of simmered golden-eye snapper (kinmedai), they kindly replaced it with sashimi instead—beautifully arranged with other sashimi dishes—and I was very satisfied! The abalone was also impressively large and thickly sliced. However, since others received their simmered fish dish towards the end of their meal course, I wondered if they might struggle to finish everything. Service from our assigned attendant felt casual—it may be polarizing depending on personal preferences. Checkout time is 10:00 AM but our return train (Odoriko) departed at 12:06 PM; we had too much idle time before leaving. A checkout time of 11:00 AM would have been more convenient!

    Excellent

    The beach is right in front, offering an amazing view. The Room has a bathtub where you can relax while enjoying the ocean view through the window. Unfortunately, it was stormy that day, so I would love to visit again on a sunny day! The food is delicious and generously portioned. Above all, the heartfelt hospitality of the staff made for a warm and highly satisfying stay from start to finish.

    The best Room bath

    This was my first time using the service. The staff provided courteous service, creating a calm atmosphere. The meals were delicious, especially the sashimi with Ise lobster, which was exquisite. The open-air bath on the rooftop was not quite up to par; it was cold, so I left early. However, the Room bath more than made up for it with its comfort. The temperature, depth, view, and spaciousness were all perfect and made me want to stay in forever. As a Room bath experience, this has been the best so far.

    A property with a stunning beachfront view.

    It's a wonderful hidden location. It seems that it was renovated a few years ago due to an owner change, and the interior is beautiful. The beach is right in front, and there is an entrance for beach access, which was great. The bath seemed to be a simple spring without any distinctive features as an Onsen, but the panoramic bath is amazing. While it has a Japanese style, relaxing on the first-floor terrace sofa gives you the feeling of being on the West Coast of America. The meals were full of Izu's delights and very hearty. The local sashimi of Isaki and Mejina was very delicious. This met our expectations. The amenities were cheap and disappointing considering the price. Also, although the Facility is new, it leaves something to be desired. I would like to visit again in summer to enjoy the beach.

    Private Space

    ◯Room The Room was spacious enough. Since we chose a Room meal Plan, we didn't encounter other guests. Additionally, we enjoyed watching dramas and movies (Netflix and YouTube) on the large TV. ◯Onsen The open-air bath does not have a washing area, and you simply soak while wearing a Samui (pants). (The capacity of the bath seems to be about 2-3 people.) We were satisfied with the open-air bath in the Room without needing to go outside. ◯Meals - Dinner The overall quantity was large. When we were served simmered golden-eye snapper, we were already full and couldn't savor it properly, which felt wasteful. Also, some dishes had strong flavors, which made us drink more water and contributed to the feeling of fullness. As others have mentioned, the abalone, in particular, tasted quite salty. (It might be fine for those who drink alcohol.) The sashimi and vegetables were fresh and delicious. - Breakfast The Japanese-style breakfast had a variety of dishes served in small bowls, which was satisfying. The amount of clams in the miso soup and the size of the bowl were particularly impressive. ◯Shuttle Service (Transportation) The Shuttle Service to the station made round-trip travel convenient. If you leave at 10 a.m. during check-out, there will be about a 1.5-hour wait at Shimoda Station until the limited express train departs. As others have commented, adjusting the check-out time (Shuttle Service time) to match the train schedule would enhance satisfaction. ◯Overall, it was a quiet and private Property that made us want to return. The taste and quantity of the meals may depend on personal preference. (When we revisit, we plan to pace ourselves to enjoy the simmered golden-eye snapper.)

    The indoor bath was unexpected.

    I thought the bath in the Room was semi-open-air, but it was indoors. It might have been my lack of attention, but I think the description was unclear. It would have been better if there were photos of the indoor bath. Despite it being the beginning of the year, there was plenty of fish served, and it was delicious. If I have the opportunity, I would like to visit again. Thank you very much.

    We had a wonderful time.

    The ocean view from the room, the onsen in the room bath, the open-air bath in the large public bath, and the seafood-centered meals that were more than we could eat, all were very satisfying. It is a property I would like to stay at again.

    The view is excellent.

    The view from the Room is amazing. The ocean view Room and the small open-air bath were also very nice. Having a sofa or chair by the window in the Room would make chatting while gazing at the sea even more enjoyable and relaxing, making the mood fantastic! Since having a terrace in the Room seems difficult, please consider adding chairs or a sofa! The view from the observatory and the open-air bath available at night are excellent! The food is incredibly delicious! Very satisfying! The service is also very good, very satisfying!
