    A Totally Off-Putting Accommodation: Open-Air Bath Peeping—Unbelievable

This was an Accommodation I felt compelled to leave a Review for. I was really disappointed, especially because my expectations were high. To be blunt, the attendants are not trained at all. Even while preparing our meal, one of them said, “We have a lot of guests today, and I have to cover four areas by myself.” I did say, “That sounds tough,” but we had come to relax on our rare day off and enjoy the in-room open-air bath—so hearing that was honestly uncomfortable. Because dinner was served in the Room, everything felt rushed and unsettled. The alcohol we ordered never arrived; even the complimentary wine included as an IKYU benefit didn’t come unless we asked. No one came to clear the dishes either, so we ended up putting them outside ourselves. We kept telling ourselves they must be busy and tried to put up with it. Breakfast was also served in the Room, so they entered using a spare key. Since the space is divided by shoji screens, when we were finally enjoying the bath together—something we had been looking forward to—we suddenly heard loud banging and clattering… It seemed they had started setting up breakfast. Just when I thought there was no privacy at all, the shoji screen opened and they said, “Here’s shampoo,” handing it directly to us as if it were a gift! Even my husband was shocked and said loudly, “Just put it there!!” This is unbelievable. Not even family would barge in like that. If it had been a man doing this, it would be grounds for legal action. I will never go back. Please be careful if you are considering staying here. Dinner was also disappointing—many items seemed pre-made. It’s not worth the price.

    First Stay

This was my first stay, and it was wonderful! The staff member who prepared our meals and the front desk staff were friendly and kind. The foreign staff member who assisted us also spoke excellent Japanese and had a lovely smile. Overall, it was a great place to stay.

The semi-open-air Onsen bath in the room with an ocean view is excellent!

The exterior may feel a bit dated, but as a historic Ryokan, this was expected and did not bother us. Our room was on the 5th floor of Shikitei with an ocean-view semi-open-air bath (Onsen), offering a great location and a pleasant experience. Enjoying the Onsen while sipping beer and watching the sunset was truly delightful. The public bath also showed some age but was not uncomfortable. Having separate hot and warm baths is thoughtful for families with children. Since we stayed over New Year's, the meals featured special New Year’s dishes. The breakfast on New Year’s Day included Osechi-style cuisine and Ozoni soup, which were delicious. The front desk staff and other team members were cheerful and welcoming, making our stay enjoyable. However, the Wi-Fi in our room did not work properly; when we reported it to the front desk, they mentioned that it might be due to high usage by other guests and suggested waiting for improvement—unfortunately, no resolution came from this advice. We couldn’t connect until the morning of our second day, which was inconvenient and slightly impacted our rating of the facility. Overall though, it was a pleasant stay that left us satisfied. Thank you!

    Impressed by the staff's hospitality.

It was a one-night stay, but I felt delighted several times thanks to the staff's excellent service. Of course, the food and Onsen were wonderful, but it was such a lovely Ryokan that I want to visit again just to see the staff. I made great memories. Thank you very much.

    First-time visit to Toi Onsen

We were upgraded to a spacious Room with a stunning ocean view, and we were very satisfied. The staff who assisted us was kind and considerate—thank you very much. We would love to stay again if we have the chance.

The photos looked beautiful, but the actual experience was quite different.

I was drawn to the photos of the meals and decided to stay, but from the facilities to the service, I kept wondering, "Is this really okay?" The facility is quite old and has been renovated inside, but there are still many stairs, confusing room layouts, and issues like no hot water in the onsen bath in the room. While infrastructure problems might be unavoidable to some extent, I had hoped they would make up for it with excellent service or meals. However... As for service, when I entered my room, the bathroom window was left open (even if it's for ventilation purposes, shouldn't it be closed before guests arrive?), allowing strange bugs to get in. Additionally, doors to staff work areas were left open with unpleasant leftover food smells wafting into the hallways—this does not reflect a guest-oriented approach. The most disappointing part was the meal I had been looking forward to. Contrary to its glamorous appearance in photos, it tasted like instant miso soup or pre-made dishes simply plated together. The only thing that tasted good was the lobster miso soup served at breakfast—and even that seemed more about relying on quality local ingredients than any creative effort by the accommodation itself. It seems this accommodation used to host major shogi matches in its heyday; however, clinging solely onto past glories with this level of service and quality may not bode well for its future success.

    Somewhere nostalgic

Thank you for your hospitality. We enjoyed a comfortable stay in the spacious and clean room. It was refreshing to stay at an accommodation offering in-room dining, and we felt relaxed chatting with the staff. The meals were simple yet delightful, featuring fresh seafood from Izu. Although my husband, who is not used to sitting on tatami mats, would have preferred dining at a table, it brought back nostalgic memories of family trips to ryokans during childhood. The indoor bath in the public bath area and the onsen in our room were very pleasant and warmed both our hearts and bodies. Unfortunately, due to the rain, the outdoor bath was lukewarm, so we returned to warm up again in our room's onsen—but this is part of nature's charm. One disappointment was that the room’s internal phone line did not work. Since this issue has been mentioned by others before us without resolution, it seems there are no plans for repair. However, having no support for phone charges despite being asked to make calls during meal times or other occasions is something that should be improved. We appreciated having proper tea leaves provided along with a large kettle pot; we enjoyed plenty of delicious tea during our stay. However, it would be even better if cold water could also be provided for after baths or late-night thirst. Despite these points mentioned above, we truly appreciate your care throughout our stay—thank you very much!

    This was my first ti...

This was my first time staying at the property. The directions were clear, and I had no trouble finding it. There is parking available right in front. The gentleman at the reception was very friendly and engaging, and within a minute of arriving, I thought, "This place is great!" The ryokan itself has a charming atmosphere that I personally like, but some people might be bothered by minor details. (For example, the toilet outlet was somehow detached from the wall... there were cobwebs... no hand soap in the toilet...) The ocean view from the room was absolutely wonderful. Surprisingly important detail: The hairdryer was Dyson! Very helpful! I pointed out a few things here and there, but if they could improve on those aspects, I think it would become an even better ryokan. There is also an onsen bath in the guest room, which overall makes it an incredible value! I will definitely visit again! Thank you very much!

    Very good value.

The day before, I received a call from the Stays informing me of a room upgrade. I was very satisfied with the very nice Room. The meal was served in the Room, and I enjoyed the light and delicious taste. The Toi Onsen was soft and very pleasant, and I enjoyed the Onsen as well. I was very satisfied with the reasonable price. I will visit again.

The open-air bath in the large public bath was dirty.

It might be said to be old and quaint. With more repairs and cleaning, it might be called a luxury Stays. The food was not delicious. There was plenty of volume.

    I was able to relax.

Used for a wedding anniversary. It was a calm space, the Room was clean, and I was able to relax slowly. There were two points that I was concerned about. 1. It would have been better if the temperature of the open-air bath and shower attached to the Room could be a little stronger. 2. The veranda under the eaves can be seen from the passageway.

Lack of love for the garden and hot springs. Staff shortages lead to a decline in service.

We stayed on the second day of our family trip at a historic inn where shogi title matches have been held and the author of "Hosoi Ude Hanjoki" once stayed, to enjoy seafood. We were very satisfied with the abundant dishes typical of an inn near the sea, such as grilled live abalone, lobster salad, and simmered alfonsino, but perhaps because the dinner time was a bit early, we couldn't finish it all. It seemed like a portion size for young surfers. We were grateful for the service of being able to buy and bring in chilled sake from the souvenir corner. We were upgraded to a room with an attached hot spring, although it didn't have a sea view, and were moved to a two-room suite, which was impressive. The quality was high and the amenities were excellent, as it had just been renovated. Now, here's the critical part: it seems the management has changed, as the phones inside the building were unusable, and the broken tiles in the bath were not repaired, causing a visually impaired family member to scrape their foot. The open-air bath had a lot of slime, and the hot and cold water formed layers, with a stirring rod provided, but ideally, there should be a system to automatically mix the water with a small waterfall or jet system. Even a little explanation would help guests understand, but the women were surprised by the slime and the number of fallen leaves and stayed in the indoor bath. It's a shame because there are good services like free access to the family bath. The garden, which should be a genuine setting utilizing a tea ceremony space and nature, was poorly maintained, with debris clogged from the previous night's rain left unattended, which was disappointing. If things continue like this, both the hot spring and the garden will die, and if the authentic Japanese inn atmosphere is lost, inbound guests will turn away. There are many foreign staff, but there were some with great smiles and good Japanese skills who seemed to be an asset, so they should be able to handle foreign guests. As a Japanese inn, if we don't properly preserve the legacy of our predecessors, it will become just like a hotel, even if the new facilities are good. I hope for serious reflection.

After making a reservation and changing the number of people, I didn't receive a reply email and got worried, so I ended up checking with the hotel multiple times! When we arrived, there was no one at the front desk, which made me anxious. One person was in a wheelchair, but there were many stairs inside, so we had to go around from the outside! It was also difficult to enter with a large car from the outside, and I thought it was no good! However, the open-air bath in the hotel room was wonderful, and the food was too much to finish! If it weren't for the wheelchair, it would feel amazing.
