    Showa-era Onsen Accommodation

    The Room has been renovated, but the hallways and stairs are still old, and you have to go up and down steep, narrow stairs to reach both the dining area and the bath. It’s not suitable for older guests, yet it’s hard to imagine younger guests choosing to stay here either. 　They boast about their hot spring source, but there doesn’t seem to be a bath attendant; it’s simply free-flowing water that is just very hot. The Facility is outdated, and the wooden tubs and stools are worn out—I didn’t feel like sitting on them. The in-room bath was also too hot to relax in. 　The meals had nothing distinctive; the taste was average, and only the serving pace was fast. This was the Ryokan with the worst mismatch between price and value I’ve experienced. It’s essentially just an Accommodation near Yubatake.

    My stay was very ful...

    My stay was very fulfilling. It was my first time trying a rock bath, and I was truly impressed. I also enjoyed relaxing in the other baths, which was wonderful. The food was delicious as well. The Yubatake is nearby, and if I have the chance, I would love to stay again. Thank you very much.

    The bath and meals were excellent.

    This was my second visit. Just like last time, the rock bath and the meals were outstanding. The “Oja-no-Yu,” which everyone raves about, was so hot at first that I couldn’t get in, but they adjusted the water flow so I could soak slowly and comfortably. Every dish was delicious and generously portioned, and the tableware was also wonderful. I was very satisfied—this is one Accommodation I’d love to visit again.

    The hostesses’ thoughtful hospitality is wonderful.

    First of all, we truly felt the hospitality of the proprietress and the staff. We were convinced they genuinely think, “Thank you for coming,” from the bottom of their hearts. The Onsen is, of course, outstanding. Gazing at the rocky surface overflowing with natural hot spring water, you can feel an immense sense of history. The meals were also absolutely wonderful. We were completely satisfied with both the taste and the portions. Just when we thought it would be a classic kaiseki course, there were creative twists that made it even more enjoyable. The tableware was also exceptionally refined and inspiring. It’s true that features such as the age of the building and facilities, and having only stairs with no elevator, may come down to personal preference depending on your generation, but for us as a couple they were not drawbacks at all. If you’re visiting Kusatsu Onsen, we think this is an Accommodation you should stop by at least once.

    A stay you’ll definitely want to repeat!

    It had been a few years since I last visited Kusatsu, so I chose this Accommodation, which is close to Yubatake and highly rated. To be honest, I’ve stayed at many famous Onsen destinations and long-established Onsen Accommodations and Hotels, and this one ranks among the very best. This time I splurged on a Room in the annex with a semi-open-air bath (hinoki cypress tub). The Room was wonderful, and the Onsen was excellent. Even so, what surpassed everything were the two (effectively three) large public baths. The rock bath in particular was outstanding—rich with plenty of yunohana minerals, creating a slightly yellowish cloudy water that was amazing. I also had a first-time experience of scooping up yunohana from the wooden frame where it collects and applying it to my body. I was able to enjoy both the rock bath and the indoor bath with an open-air section almost entirely by myself, which was fantastic. I was surprised that someone who came in after me at the rock bath lived in the same area as I do; he turned out to be a regular for nearly 30 years and has already visited twice this year (must be well-off). It made perfect sense when he said this Accommodation’s Onsen is the best in Kusatsu. Regarding the open-air bath in the Room, it would be nice if there were something like a stirring rod for mixing the water. I definitely want to stay here again.

    The hot water and meals were extremely satisfying.

    From arrival to departure, we received top-notch service, and the meals were exceptional. The quality of the hot spring water was refreshing, and the bath had an excellent atmosphere. The only downside was that we couldn't find the air conditioner remote in the Room, which made it a bit cold. Other than that, everything was perfect. This is a Ryokan for adults that I would recommend to friends. Thank you for taking care of us!

    Both the Onsen and the cuisine are excellent!

    I visited two months ago and couldn't forget the "Ouja no Yu," so I came back again. While I love Onsen, my partner especially enjoyed the meals, particularly the Saikyo-grilled yellowtail, which was rich and incredibly delicious. Last time we had salt-grilled sweetfish, so even within a short span of two months, we could feel the seasonal changes through the cuisine. The staff seemed to remember us from our previous visit and welcomed us warmly. This time, I was able to relax even more than before. I'll definitely visit again!

    We hope to improve the dining experience further.

    I stayed at the separate accommodation. The room was clean and well-maintained. The staff provided a comfortable level of service with just the right amount of distance. However, I feel the meals could be improved. While the quantity was more than sufficient, the quality left something to be desired. It might be better to reduce the volume and focus on enhancing the quality of ingredients, especially for a separate accommodation like this one.

    Hot Spring Therapy in Kusatsu for Over 25 Years

    The natural spring "Ouja no Yu" flowing from the rocks is a top-class medicinal bath, known to heal ailments and rejuvenate the body. While its temperature is slightly lower than Nikawa no Yu or Awase Yu, it still warms the body thoroughly and provides great benefits. Additionally, the hostess and staff are exceptional, offering thoughtful care and warm hospitality that always refreshes the heart. The cuisine is delicious, served in seasonal dishware that enhances its exquisite flavors. Although it can be disappointing when fully booked or unavailable for solo travelers during desired times, I always look forward to returning to this wonderful accommodation with its amazing hot springs and dedicated staff. To the hostess, attendants, and all male staff members—thank you once again for an unforgettable experience!

    The "King's Bath" was an experience that makes you want to visit again.

    I had heard that this Ryokan has a long history, so I was a bit nervous, but I was warmly welcomed as soon as I arrived. I am very grateful for the kind hospitality of the staff. Thanks to them, I was able to relax completely. The food was absolutely delicious and plentiful, leaving me fully satisfied. Above all, "Ouja no Yu" is truly a one-of-a-kind Onsen that cannot be found anywhere else. Thank you for an unforgettable experience. I would love to visit again!

    The rock bath was excellent.

    The baths include a private hot spring rock bath and a bath sourced from the Yubatake hot spring, with alternating usage for men and women depending on the time. The rock bath is particularly hot but highly enjoyable. Meals are served warm, which was satisfying, especially the grilled salted ayu fish, which was delicious. However, other dishes might not meet high expectations. The Room shows signs of age and had a slight musty smell.

    Natural Rock Bath and Delicious Meals

    The natural rock bath was hot but incredibly warming, leaving the skin smooth in a short time. Dinner featured Kyoto-style kaiseki cuisine with stunning tableware and delicious dishes, especially the salt-grilled ayu fish, which was the best I've ever had. Breakfast the next morning was equally satisfying, with every dish tasting great—particularly the salt-grilled salmon. The hospitality from the hostess and all staff members was exceptional, making it a truly satisfying stay. Thank you!

    One of the Finest Hot Springs

    I revisited after a long time. The highlight is undoubtedly the rock bath here, with its excellent water quality. I also enjoyed the carefully prepared dishes and seasonal tableware. The hostess's thoughtful hospitality remains unchanged, which made me very happy. It had been over 10 years, but I still believe this is a truly unique accommodation.

    Common features of a traditional Ryokan?

    The exterior has the charm of a traditional inn, but the Onsen is too hot, and the sliding doors to the two rock-spring Onsens are very heavy, making it difficult for elderly guests or women to open. The water-related facilities in the Onsen area are outdated, and items like stools and buckets feel old and lack cleanliness, making them unappealing to use. The garden outside the room is not well-maintained, which makes you question if this justifies the price. It was disappointing overall. On a positive note, the meals were delicious. The service provided by Nakai staff was pleasant and commendable.

    Memorable Dining and Relaxing Baths

    The meals were absolutely delicious. The use of fine tableware showed great attention to detail in the dishes. Both the soup and miso soup, as well as breakfast, were highly satisfying. Breakfast was Japanese-style but also included salad, yogurt, and coffee after the meal, reflecting a thoughtful consideration for health. It was my first time experiencing an Onsen naturally flowing from rock formations. I felt the wonders of nature, enjoyed amazing food, and had the perfect weekend.

    Very kind.

    The proprietress called us on the day and when we informed her that we would be arriving two and a half hours earlier than the check-in time, she kindly said she would have the room ready for us. We were also able to enjoy the bath with Kusatsu Onsen water.

    Good Points The quality of the Onsen water is excellent. It was really nice to be able to stay in a room with an open-air bath and enjoy it continuously. I can understand why Kusatsu Onsen is said to be good; it was truly wonderful. The rock bath that far exceeds that is the best. I had a first-time experience. It was a wonderful Onsen that ranks high in my life's Onsen ranking. Bad Points - The first attendant who came during dinner seemed to be angry, which made me feel uneasy. Another attendant was polite and reassuring. In the middle, the same attendant coughed while carrying the food. Unbelievable. If she was not feeling well, shouldn't she have let someone else handle it? When the meat dish was brought, she said she would bring the rice, but even after 10 minutes, it didn't come. Another attendant asked if they should bring it. There was no coordination among the attendants. Also, towards the end, we ordered a bottle of wine and were told it would be brought to the room if we couldn't finish it. We said we would take it back to the room at our own timing, but since no one was coordinated, including the landlady, three people asked us the same thing. - When we returned to the room, there were more glasses, indicating someone had entered the room during our meal. While I understand it was done with good intentions, it felt uncomfortable to think someone entered the room without a word. We were not informed of any turndown service, so I don't understand why only the glasses were changed. - The next morning at breakfast, I couldn't eat much and left some food. When I ordered the final coffee, the plates I left were stacked and cleared away in front of me. I don't think even family restaurants do this nowadays. At this price range, claiming to be a Ryokan with a restaurant, I was speechless at such actions. - After breakfast, when we returned to the room, it had been cleaned without our consent. Moreover, the bottle we bought as a souvenir the day before was in the trash bag with the empty wine bottles from the previous day. If cleaning needs to be done in such a hurry, isn't there a problem with the system itself? While I understand you like cleaning, the used razor bag was mixed in with the amenities. Isn't there a final check? Lastly, the baths, including the large public bath, are excellent. Even though the service was not as expected, I still want to experience that rock bath and the room bath again.

    The hot spring water is the best in Japan, but the Room is mediocre.

    The famous rock bath was beyond expectations, with an abundance of rich hot spring water flowing in. The other bath also uses water from the hot spring field, providing a mysterious experience that makes you feel pleasantly tipsy before bed. The cuisine boasts kaiseki, offering a top-notch taste that is not typical ryokan food. Breakfast was also good. The service was kind and pleasant. Up to this point, there are no complaints, but the lack of investment in facilities is a problem. Although cleaning is done properly, the bath chairs are old and discolored, and the room smells musty upon entering. The furnishings remain from the 1980s, clearly showing a lack of investment. To preserve the wonderful rock bath, the management should consider renovation investments.

    A small and tranquil Ryokan.

    I have stayed at 12 Stays in Kusatsu Onsen so far, and Tenojiyasan was the best among them. The rock bath is wonderful, and although it costs over 10,000 yen per person, it lacks the bustling feeling of other large Ryokan, offering a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. The delicious meals and the famous rock bath are well worth it. However, it might be challenging for those with mobility issues as it is built clinging to a hill near the Yubatake and there is no elevator.

    The meals and the quality of the hot springs are excellent.

    I stayed here, drawn by the unique onsen that springs from the bedrock, even among the famous Kusatsu Onsen, and it was a wonderful property that met my expectations. The dinner menu even listed the dishes and the utensils used, which I think reflects the high level and confidence. There were reviews mentioning that there are many stairs, and indeed, the ryokan is built clinging to a hill near the Yubatake, with a narrow entrance leading immediately to the famous bedrock bath, and you are quickly guided to the second-floor area, so there are many stairs. However, considering that this terrain gives rise to the famous onsen from the bedrock, I think it's understandable. Our room was the cheapest category on the fourth floor, and due to the terrain, there is no elevator inside, but I think the higher-priced rooms were on the second and third floors. However, with that onsen and cuisine, I believe the price for the cheaper room is very satisfying.

    Wonderful

    The onsen and the food were both very satisfying. It could be described as a ryokan that combines a restaurant and an onsen property. The rock bath was particularly impressive. I've never seen a bath like this before, and the water was truly excellent; it was simply the best. Both dinner and breakfast were served in a private room, allowing for a relaxed experience. Dinner consisted of freshly prepared dishes brought one by one, each delicious and with ample portions. Breakfast was also luxurious, and our whole family ended up having seconds. The building is understandably old, and honestly, the stairs were a bit of a challenge, but the room was calm and had the atmosphere of a long-established ryokan. Overall, it was one of the top one or two stays I've ever experienced (incidentally, the other one was a property in Yufuin. In terms of the water, perhaps Kusatsu?).

    First time at Kusatsu Onsen - Rock Bath Power

    I came to Kusatsu for the first time for my 60th birthday and 35th wedding anniversary. I chose this inn with a rock bath after doing some research. The proprietress and the staff were courteous, and I had a pleasant stay. I was surprised by the meticulous replacement of cold water, hot water, tea, and kombucha in the room at various times such as check-in, after dinner, and after breakfast, with new teacups each time. Dinner and breakfast were beautifully presented in lovely dishes, and I was impressed, thinking this is what a long-established inn should be. I thought the taste might be strong, but it was just right and very delicious. The dessert of anmitsu for dinner had plenty of fruit, and even after a large meal, it was refreshing. The inn is not very large and has many stairs, but there is a lift installed on the stairs for convenience. It was my first time at Kusatsu Onsen, and the whole town felt like a hot spring theme park, making it an enjoyable experience. The hot springs of Kusatsu feel effective on the body due to their heat and (probably) rich components. The rock bath at the inn is unique to this place, and I was glad to have experienced it. The baths switch between men and women at different times, and I managed to enjoy the rock bath twice and the indoor bath once. Thank you, Tenojiyasan, for preserving the hot spring that has been flowing for 1,200 years.

    Wonderful room! ... Dinner was disappointing.

    The room with an open-air bath is absolutely amazing! Including the furnishings. I recommend it as you can also enjoy three types of hot springs within the facility. The seasoning of the dinner is disappointing... too salty... it's a shame because the ingredients are good.
