My wife and I love in-room open-air hot spring baths, and we stay at inns around Japan about once every two months. Our stay at Sumika was extremely satisfying—the staff were wonderfully friendly. The owner (I think), who resembles Toyo Takeno, kindly took care of us even though we checked in during the busy dinner hours with crab service. Thank you so much! We were surprised by all the extra kindness and service, but that generous hospitality made us very happy. We wanted to book the crab course, but it was fully booked, so we reserved an in-room seafood rice bowl in advance. I believe it was 1,980 yen. It had more than 10 kinds of toppings, and each type of fish was clearly labeled with handwritten notes—the squid illustration was a fun touch. Everything was incredibly fresh and generously portioned, and every dish besides the seafood bowl also felt carefully prepared. We enjoyed everything and found it delicious. The private open-air bath in the room felt even more spacious than in the photos, with a large tub and wonderful water. We could stretch out our legs and relax to the fullest. Even though we stayed on an affordable plan, the quality exceeded our expectations. It made us think that if we stayed with the crab course… we might get hooked. It seems hard to get a reservation, but next time we’ll definitely come back for the crab course!!!!
