I stay away from home more than 60 nights a year, every year, and this was the worst experience I’ve ever had. The listing says something like “not suitable for people who dislike insects,” but it was far beyond what you’d expect. Finding centipedes and stink bugs in the Room—since it’s a fully renovated old house—I could reluctantly accept as unavoidable. But what was truly unacceptable was the bathroom: there were over 100 gnats… honestly, far more than that. It was on a level where you wonder how many there even are. This isn’t “because it’s an old house” or “because it’s surrounded by nature”—it’s simply poor drainage and ongoing unsanitary conditions causing an infestation, and they’re just using “nature” or “old house” as an excuse. Please be aware. I can also reluctantly accept soot falling, but we found an unbelievable amount of hair inside the bedding. There was so much hair that one pass with a lint roller wouldn’t be enough. I contacted management, and they made one of our two nights free, but even with that discount we would still have preferred to stay elsewhere. In fact, we had to use local public bathing facilities both days, which completely defeated the purpose. In Chiba I often stay at fully renovated traditional houses like “Ruuf” or “NIPPONIA,” and there isn’t even a single hair anywhere—let alone swarms of gnats in the bathroom—and I’ve never seen centipedes either. If this is the only place like this, then how poor the conditions are should be obvious. They contacted us saying they would invite us again for free next time, but they clearly don’t understand. This is at a level where I wouldn’t stay even if it were free—and I wouldn’t stay even if you paid me.
