I thoroughly enjoyed Iwakuni for the first time in over 50 years.
We stayed here for my wife’s slightly belated birthday trip. I last visited Iwakuni when I was around 10 years old, but this was my first time staying overnight. Dinner was the Chef’s Special / Gourmet Kaiseki, and everything was delicious. The sashimi in particular was outstanding—I could really taste the freshness and quality of the ingredients. We travel about 20 nights a year, and this was the best sashimi we’ve had. Our Room was a 20-tatami Japanese-style room with a view of Kintaikyo Bridge. Since we go to bed at different times, it was very convenient for us and we were satisfied overall. One concern was that the bathroom area (toilet and washbasin) felt quite outdated, so it wasn’t as comfortable to use. If it were renovated to the same standard as the restroom near the dining area on the 2nd floor, it would have been an even better stay. Thank you very much for preparing a birthday gift for my wife, and also for sending my wallet back to our home after I mistakenly left it in the valuables box. We truly enjoyed Iwakuni again after more than 50 years. Lastly, several young men who assisted us at dinner were wearing “In Training” badges. Their explanations of each dish were sometimes hesitant, but seeing how hard they worked felt refreshing. A word from someone older: “Keep it up, rookies!”

It wasn’t at a level that justified the high price. Disappointing.

10-day, 9-night road trip
We arrived around 3:00 pm, earlier than planned, thanks to the good weather after visiting Miyajima. We went early thinking the baths would get crowded later, but there were already many people. We were told that day visitors also use the baths. From both the baths and our Room, we could see Kintaikyo Bridge and Iwakuni Castle, which looked great illuminated at night. The meals were excellent in both quantity and quality. The building is quite old, but it has been reasonably renovated; our Room was a Japanese-style room with beds, and we were satisfied. The service and hospitality were good as well, and overall it offered good value for money.

An amazing location ...
An amazing location with views of Kintaikyo Bridge and Iwakuni Castle from both the Room and the open-air bath. However, perhaps because I was traveling solo, it was disappointing that the Room was extremely small. It was fun making and eating kawara soba myself at the breakfast venue, and I was especially impressed by how pleasant the staff member who guided me and the woman at the souvenir shop were.

The location is excellent.
The view from the large public bath terrace was amazing. It was my first stay at a historic Hotel, and it made me feel nostalgic. I also enjoyed local cuisine and dishes made with a strong focus on locally sourced ingredients.

I didn’t have high e...
I didn’t have high expectations since it was cherry blossom season and the rate was reasonable, but although it’s a bit of a walk to the bath, the view was wonderful and helped me relax. The Room was a twin (shower only) and, since it was at the end of the building, the view was just the sky, but there was a small courtyard garden (maybe), and the Room was clean and comfortable. The only thing that bothered me slightly was a flapping noise from the air conditioner... Breakfast was delicious while enjoying the view of Kintaikyo Bridge from the restaurant. Overall, I think the Facility is old, but thanks to the staff’s natural smiles that didn’t make you feel that at all, I felt comfortable right until the end.

Concern About the Pricing
This is a harsh comment. This time, two of us stayed for one night and two days, in a Room costing just under JPY 90,000. I’m sorry to the Accommodation, but for this price, the Room facilities and the quality of the meals felt honestly far too expensive—even considering it was the middle day of a three-day holiday. I love traveling and stay at about 20–30 Accommodations across The whole country each year. We usually choose Accommodations in the same price range for two people while checking Reviews on IKYU and other Reservation sites, but I have never experienced such low quality before. In particular, the Room’s toilet and bath had an old-fashioned feel that made me hesitate to use them. The floor and tatami flexed and creaked when walking, there was no night light or similar amenities, and the bed felt like a mattress placed directly on top of tatami. I also wondered whether mold from humidity would be an issue. The Room had a distinctive odor (like a Buddhist altar room), and it felt less relaxing than being at home. As for dinner, we were seated with no particular explanation, and dishes were brought out one after another in a very procedural way. There was no explanation of ingredients or what kinds of sashimi were served, so we couldn’t really tell what we were eating. These days even casual pubs explain their sashimi platters… The beef was tough, and the tempura batter was thick with an overly crunchy texture. When we find a Hotel we enjoy staying at, we often return—but I’m sorry to say I did not feel like coming back here. That said, the person who guided us to our Room was very friendly, polite, and left a good impression. Also, the open-air bath had a nice view. (You cannot see Kintaikyo Bridge from inside the tub.) This may be none of my business, but since you can see Kintaikyo Bridge from the Rooms and your location is excellent, I think you should consider renovating your Facility and improving service quality. As things are now—especially younger guests—may not come at all or may not return even if they do visit. Because I couldn’t relax much, I checked out early in the morning. I sincerely apologize for this very negative Review.

A convenient Hotel very close to Kintaikyo Bridge
A hotel located just a 1-2 minute walk from Kintaikyo Bridge. While the Facility shows its age, you can enjoy exploring the area around Kintaikyo Bridge late in the evening or early in the morning, making for a fulfilling stay. Dinner offered a wide variety of dishes, including local specialties, and breakfast was served buffet-style with plenty of options, all delicious.

The Hotel offers stunning views. The breakfast buffet is extensive.

A nostalgic, old-fashioned atmosphere.
A large Onsen Hotel that feels like a maze. The baths had great views, and the food was delicious. But... The Room felt beyond “retro” and just cheap. I felt the value for money was very poor. In a promotional email from IKYU.com, it said something like, “A Kintaikyo Bridge view Room with the Kintaikyo Bridge right below you.” But we were put in a Room near the edge of the building, and you could only see it in the distance. Even though this was an IKYU.com sale? If you’re going to run a sale, shouldn’t you at least provide a Room where “right below you” is actually true? It’s not like I asked for “anything is fine as long as it’s cheap.” I clicked because I was drawn to the phrase “the Kintaikyo Bridge right below you.” Even at the restaurant, I expected at least a seat with a good view—but our table was also off to the side. There were no thoughtful touches like pairings or other ideas that would raise guest spending. All of the staff were friendly and pleasant, which made this even more disappointing. Breakfast felt geared toward Chinese guests—Chinese-style congee and other Chinese dishes—alongside Japanese items. There were also skewered cutlets and fried chicken... Even though there was a live omelet station, there were trays of scrambled eggs and rolled omelets, freshly baked bread, and even curry (maybe because it’s trendy lately). Looking around at other guests, there seemed to be many elderly couples and solo travelers. Do we really need chain-hotel-style breakfast here? Lately I’ve been thinking: even if it’s an IKYU.com sale that makes me click, if it ends up being “cheap but bad,” then it’s no different from other travel sites. Honestly, I’d rather book directly—it would feel less stressful. Is whoever is in charge actually checking these details properly? Recently when I click from an email offer, I keep ending up with disappointing Rooms, which has made me increasingly distrustful. I also don’t see any point in perks like extending checkout time by just a little. What attracts me is believing that better Rooms or better dining seats are discounted. If all I want is an inexpensive stay, major Business Hotel chains these days offer outstanding value—I’ll stay there instead. That’s not why I click on IKYU.com.

We had a relaxing time as a family.
The Ryokan staff were all very attentive, and the view from the room was excellent. The meals were also incredibly delicious. The view from the Onsen was stunning, and the water quality was wonderful. This time it was a parent-child trip, but next time we will come with the whole family! Thank you for creating such wonderful memories.

Kintaikyo Bridge sightseeing is available until 3:00 PM.
I initially chose not to include dinner, but most nearby restaurants were closed or on break by around 3 PM. I was unaware that the hotel's restaurant had closing days or required a prior reservation. As a result, I had to take a bus to the station (though the restaurant there was delicious, so it turned out well). The breakfast buffet offered a decent variety and was satisfying. The bath facilities were also impressive with towels readily available. This was my first visit to Kintaikyo Bridge in about 25 years. Perhaps because it was a weekday, there were few tourists, making it quiet and relaxing to enjoy at leisure. For those planning to explore shops, I recommend strolling around in the morning.

Lacks cleanliness
The Room's beds seemed to have been hastily arranged as twins, and the constant movement of the beds was concerning. The age of the Facility is noticeable, and having a bed near the door was also unsettling. Additionally, the hallway leading to the bath was dark, making me wonder if there really was a bath ahead. The staff were kind and helpful. I hope for further updates to improve the Facility.

A Relaxing and Tranquil Accommodation
Located right in front of Kintaikyo Bridge, I was initially worried it might feel a bit too bustling, but those concerns were unnecessary. Known for its famous pufferfish dishes, the meal was more than satisfying. I ate so much that I don’t think I’ll want pufferfish again for a while! In winter, pufferfish, crab, and meat are must-haves. Pufferfish from Yamaguchi is truly delicious. It’s just a quick trip by Shinkansen. When winter comes again, I’ll definitely want to visit for another meal!

Insufficient care for guests during breakfast.
There are not enough guides during breakfast. There is little guidance for customers. Additionally, there is a shortage of staff to clear tables, making it difficult for guests to smoothly secure seats.

Best Location
The aging of the Facility is undeniable, and the Room amenities are poor, but the location and services such as Shuttle Service make up for it, and overall, I was satisfied with the cost performance. However, the paintings displayed throughout the building are close to prints of masters, which I think are unnecessary. I believe only works by local artists are sufficient.
