    A cozy favorite Hotel

    I have stayed here several times. The atmosphere throughout the Hotel is wonderful, and it feels truly comfortable, with thoughtful attention to even the smallest details. I also love the little extras during my stay, such as drinks in the refrigerator and light snacks and beverages in the lounge. It’s not overly flashy, so I can relax, and every time I stay I’m reminded how great this Hotel is. I would definitely like to stay here again when I visit Kyoto.

    First stay in a Japanese balcony king Accommodation

    This was my 28th stay here. It was my first time in the Room since it was renovated from the former Balcony King into the Japanese Balcony King with Japanese-inspired touches. Like the Japanese Junior Suite renovated at the same time, the bed sits on a raised tatami platform. The tatami area is slightly larger than in the Japanese Junior Suite, and there’s a larger table as well—great for enjoying light snacks while watching TV. The standout feature of this Room is Nintendo’s nameplate, visible as soon as you step out onto the balcony. Having it all to yourself at night is a special perk unique to this Room.

    When I previously st...

    When I previously stayed at a VMG Group Hotel in Kyoto, I felt the same way—this stay reaffirmed the direction many newer hotel chains are taking. I prefer services where guest needs are anticipated in advance, but here the style is more “staff respond only after you ask” (this may be what they call all-inclusive), so I think preferences will vary. pro: - The Japanese Junior Suite is, as advertised, so spacious that you could probably book a standard single Room using just the bathroom area. (Personally, I would have appreciated a larger bedroom instead.) - The building itself has a great atmosphere, and the lounge interiors throughout are calming. That said, the website photos feel overly dramatized. - It’s all-inclusive, with a wide variety of food and drinks. con: - At check-in, staff were clearly not busy, yet poor internal communication meant we were kept waiting. Guests could plainly see the work Mac screen; at times it was left unattended while staff stepped away. Overall attention to detail felt lacking—almost like a student club trying hard to run things. - One of their selling points—the counter bar—was unmanned as shown in the photos, and glass replenishment was slow. I had a Multiple Night Stay; on the first night there were loud groups who didn’t seem like guests (they looked like office workers) drinking there and saying they were “regulars.” How can someone be a “regular” in an area you can only enter by inputting the key given at check-in? It felt suspicious. While being stared at by these “regulars,” I had no choice but to step behind the bar counter myself to choose alcohol; when I picked something they egged me on with comments like “Ohh, Ki No Bi?”—an extremely uncomfortable experience. - The bedroom air conditioner vent blows directly onto the bed and it’s cold. Yet on the second night—for some reason—the bedroom didn’t cool at all and it was uncomfortably hot. - Although it was a Multiple Night Stay, breakfast was exactly the same every morning. At least tell guests in advance. (Also, one item served seemed different from what was listed on the menu—probably an error—but staff didn’t appear to notice.) - There isn’t enough lighting. If this were a high-floor Room with wall-to-wall windows you might not need much lighting, but since it faces a residential area and doesn’t get enough light through the windows, ceiling lights are needed too. The Room is so dark during daytime that it feels depressing.

    We had a relaxing stay!

    I was very satisfied. I arrived early, but you prepared my Room right away! When I entered the Hotel, I had a strange feeling as if I’d wandered into the past—almost like time travel. However, entering my email address on the tablet felt a bit troublesome. I also hurried through the cold tea and warabi mochi, which was a little disappointing. Since it was around my birthday, I was happy to receive a card and sweets as a gift. In the lounge, there was an Accommodation tour being given to overseas guests, but it was extremely loud, and they were taking drinks from the refrigerator and drinking them while talking. It made me quite uncomfortable. It made me so sad that I spoke to a staff member right away. The peaceful atmosphere and interior were at risk of being ruined. That said, it is truly a wonderful building, with an international feel—as if I were in Portugal, France, or Singapore! I was deeply impressed and thought Nintendo is amazing! Also, with the Kyoto Accommodation Tax and given that this is such a prestigious Hotel of this caliber, I believe it will be necessary going forward to enforce proper guest manners more thoroughly. Thank you in advance. The lounge offerings were fun and delicious (including watermelon). Breakfast was also tasty, but staff were instructing a new male employee right in front of guests. He served earnestly and made me want to cheer him on, but honestly, I would prefer that kind of coaching be done behind the scenes. Everyone was kind overall; however, even though I wanted to relax during my meal, it somehow made me feel like eating quickly. I was surprised by the Kyoto Accommodation Tax of 4,000 yen and contacted you about it—thank you for your polite explanation. It was educational. As mentioned in some Reviews as well: there were a few female staff members who seemed rather curt at times—and I understood what people meant. As part of the service we received tickets for nearby Ume-no-Yu; we went for a bath! A staff member guided us there which really helped. It warmed me up so much! The Room was comfortable too; even the pajamas were soft gauze fabric so I could relax fully. With late checkout until 12:00 p.m., next time I'd definitely like to rent bicycles! When leaving, you saw us off and greeted us very politely in many ways—I headed home feeling great. It was an excellent Hotel! I'll definitely come again!

    Hatsumarufuku Building

    Overall, it is a nice Accommodation with a sense of history, but mosquitoes appeared in the middle of the night and I asked to have a mosquito repellent delivered. The staff member who brought it was unfriendly, and it was not pleasant service by any means. Breakfast was delicious and the other staff were great, which made it even more disappointing. I had high expectations for this stay, but I don’t think there will be a next time...

    A Slightly Fun Hotel

    I stayed in the new wing. I expected it to be small, but it was surprisingly spacious—a calm, comfortable Room. There were bathrobes and pajamas, plus slightly cushioned disposable slippers. The shampoo, conditioner, and body wash smelled fine, but the quality was just average. The bath also had a reasonably sized tub, so I could stretch my legs, which was nice. As soon as I arrived, they offered an oshibori towel and a cold drink—and maybe because it was summer—warabi mochi as well. They also guided me through the Room and various facilities in the building. The staff member who assisted me was lovely and cheerful. What disappointed me was that it wasn’t as enjoyable as the explanations made it sound. I came back around 11:30 p.m., and although the lounge is said to be available 24 hours a day, there were only two eel rice balls left (served from 9:00 p.m.), but I managed to get one. However, the noodles—which I had been told would be served from 11:00 p.m.—were sold out when I asked... I came back after drinking and really wanted noodles; instead, I had to settle for lukewarm dashi chazuke made with one of the remaining eel rice balls. Since the bar area closes at 11:00 p.m., if you want to drink slowly you end up in this lounge with fairly bright lighting. It was disappointing that the bar closes at 11:00 p.m.—it’s a wonderful space different from the lounge—so I couldn’t really use it. It didn’t feel like a place where you come back and relax for another couple of hours with drinks afterward. Maybe my expectations were too high... I only used breakfast once, but it felt too simple—like there could have been at least one more item. Since it’s not a luxury Hotel maybe that can’t be helped—but at this price point there are better Hotels elsewhere—that’s my impression.

    I love everything.

    I stayed with No Meals Included, but on the day I was told I could also dine at Tempura Marufuku, so I did. It was a trip with my child, and they seemed very satisfied as well. I also love alcohol, so having all-inclusive drinks was truly exciting. The Room was wonderful, and I’d love to stay again.

    It was excellent.

    This was my fourth stay, and it was amazing as always. It’s quiet and very comfortable. I love the atmosphere at Marufukuro, and the staff are kind—I was very satisfied again this time. By the way, breakfast was Japanese-style this time; will there be an option to switch to Western-style in the future? I had thought breakfast would be Western-style, so that part was a little disappointing (lol).

    A Cozy Hotel

    To all the staff at Marufukuro, Thank you very much for taking such great care of us. Even though it was a busy time and our request was last-minute, we truly appreciate that you kindly agreed to give us an in-house tour. We were delighted with everything—from your thoughtful explanations about the Yamauchi family to the details of the Room. The Room was very comfortable, and we were able to relax and enjoy our stay. Breakfast was also delicious and beautifully prepared. Thanks to your courteous hospitality, it became a wonderful memory for us. We would love to visit again.

    Use the Hometown Tax Donation Program

    This stay was booked using a Furusato Nozei return gift (worth 30,000 yen). The Hotel offers unique services you won’t find elsewhere, and the in-house Facilities were creative and interesting. However, even with the return gift, the additional cash payment was still quite high, and I was also concerned that check-in starts late at 4:00 PM (some Plans start at 5:00 PM). I don’t think I would stay again.

    A Highly Satisfying Trip

    I booked this stay out of curiosity—what kind of place is “Nintendo’s former headquarters + Tadao Ando,” and is it really all-inclusive? It was a one-night trip just to stay at this Hotel, and I was completely satisfied. Everything provided—the drinks, food, slippers, bedding, pajamas, bathroom amenities, and air conditioning—was extremely comfortable. I felt truly relaxed and enjoyed my time. The staff were discreet, almost as if they stayed out of sight. It felt like being at home. What impressed me most was the fully automatic beer server in the guest lounge. You take a copper mug from the fridge, place it on the stand, press a button—and it rises with a soft whirring sound, tilts to pour the beer perfectly, then lowers again as if to say “here you go.” And it was my favorite: Sorachi beer. I promised myself I would come back.

    The Facility had a charming atmosphere and I really liked it. The bathroom also had a deep tub that you can soak in up to your shoulders, not the shallow Western-style type, so it was very relaxing. The 24-hour guest lounge was excellent, and although I don’t drink alcohol so I didn’t use it, the self-serve bar setup was wonderful. The selection of spirits provided was also high-end. I felt that the owner’s philosophy of creating the Hotel they would want to stay in themselves really comes through. For a Hotel in this price range, the facilities and service are outstanding. I would love to stay again.

    It was disappointing...

    It was disappointing that the Room was not the Royal Blue Room as per my Reservation, and that the breaker tripped so I couldn’t use the hair dryer and the Room got cold. I lost more than 1.5 hours of sleep while staff fixed it in the Room. However, the space itself was comfortable and I enjoyed my stay. I don’t drink alcohol at all, but I think I would have enjoyed it even more if I did. The bath salts were great, and I enjoyed them twice—at night and in the morning.

    Returning after 3 years

    The first trip of the year was to Marufukuro for the first time in three years. Both last time and this time were incredibly luxurious. We experienced all-inclusive hospitality, creating deeply cherished memories. For architecture enthusiasts, the retro-modern space is irresistible. In the 24-hour lounge, we enjoyed not only drinks but also fresh fruits, prosciutto, desserts, ochazuke (rice with tea), and plenty of late-night snacks. Breakfast was an order buffet style; the soup and avocado toast were especially delicious—I couldn't resist ordering extra! The Room was spacious, clean, and provided a truly luxurious experience. I am grateful for the attentive service from all staff members. I hope to visit again very soon. Thank you so much!

    It was the best time.

    As a year-end treat, we stayed as a couple at this accommodation. From check-in to check-out, we had an incredibly happy time. With the all-inclusive plan, every drink and snack was delicious, and the late-night eel rice ball was truly exceptional. The number of guests was not too many, allowing us to enjoy a calm and relaxing stay. Since our plan did not include dinner, we asked the staff for restaurant recommendations. They even made a reservation for us, and we enjoyed a fantastic meal at an excellent Chinese restaurant. We would love to stay here again!

    Year-End Final Stay Commemorative Marufukuro Suite

    Thank you for your hospitality during my 24th stay. It was wonderful to return to the Marufukuro Suite, and I felt nostalgic as soon as I saw the staircase upon opening the door. As always, I had an enjoyable stay thanks to your amazing staff, but the Christmas season made it even more special with delightful gift presentations. I’m always a bit anxious about when the late-night unagiri might end, but it seems to have become a staple, which is reassuring. The self-service bar on the second floor has become more accessible with fruit-based liqueurs added alongside its previous focus on whiskies—this change is much appreciated! This was my fifth time enjoying tempura here, and I loved discussing its subtle changes with the chef while savoring each bite. Learning about not just the changes but also their background and philosophy is truly fascinating. I look forward to visiting again soon!

    A Journey to Reflect on the Founder

    Accommodation within walking distance from Kyoto Station. I was extremely satisfied with my stay. I have stayed at several accommodations by the PDS Group, and all of them have a well-thought-out concept. This time, I stayed in a room that is said to have been used by the founding family of Nintendo. There were two rooms: The living room retained its original design (it gave me the nostalgic feeling of being at my grandmother's house in the countryside), while the bedroom across the courtyard had a modern design. The building retains traces of its history throughout, showcasing the design sense of Tei Yamauchi, wife of Mr. Yamauchi from Nintendo's founding family. During your stay, you can hear more about this during a guided tour provided by staff—highly recommended! (It’s said that it was rare for women at that time to voice their opinions and even have their names engraved as building owners.) Next time, I’m considering staying in one of their superior rooms which were used as guest rooms! As it is an all-inclusive accommodation, you can fully enjoy your stay just within the property—relaxing in the lounge or exploring Nintendo’s history in their library. Unfortunately, I had plans outside and couldn’t experience everything this time around; next time, I’d love to spend my entire visit enjoying just what this accommodation has to offer! The staff’s hospitality was excellent—they not only provided an informative room tour but also introduced nearby restaurants for dining options. I'll definitely use these recommendations for my next visit and make it even more enjoyable! Thank you very much for such a wonderful experience!

    A must-stay Hotel for Nintendo fans!

    Stayed in the main building semi-suite with a breakfast-included plan. Although I have no particular attachment to Nintendo, I thought it was a wonderful accommodation that retained the atmosphere of its time. The 24-hour lounge was nice, but my impression slightly dropped after experiencing the exceptional lounge at a luxury hotel near Yasaka Pagoda the next day. The service was straightforward and pleasant, but it felt odd that staff from unrelated departments or on-duty employees did not greet guests when passing by within the hotel. I had Japanese-style breakfast, which didn’t suit my taste, but my wife chose Western-style and found it very delicious.

    It was comfortable.

    Upon arrival in the summer heat, we were delighted by the welcome service of water yokan and tea. The Room was a twin shared with a friend, located in the newly built wing (Room 101), close to the lounge but completely soundproof, allowing for a comfortable stay. The facility itself has many highlights and offers an enjoyable space for adults. The staff were kind and took great care of us—thank you very much! One regret was not knowing that lunch was available; I only found out through other Reviews after returning home. Since both the late-night snack and breakfast were delicious, I imagine lunch would have been just as good—I wish I had known before checking out! Additionally, while the indoor slippers provided were soft and comfortable, it might be more convenient if sandals were available for guests walking from areas outside of the new wing to the lounge instead of wearing shoes. I look forward to coming back again to fully enjoy everything next time!

    It was excellent.

    We stayed as a family of four in two Rooms. While we have stayed at other Hotels renovated from historical buildings before, this Hotel offered a guided tour during check-in, allowing us to learn more about its design and history. The light snacks and breakfast in the lounge were of high quality—beautifully presented and delicious, leaving us very satisfied. The staff's service was pleasant and their attentiveness made our stay comfortable. The only minor disappointment was when we asked for directions to the Nintendo Museum; the guidance provided was not very detailed or accurate. Considering some guests may visit due to the connection with Nintendo, it might be helpful for staff to have precise route information prepared. Overall, we were extremely satisfied and had a comfortable stay. We would love to return if given the opportunity!

    About Our Staff Service

    I stayed at this hotel in Naha because I like hotels in the PDS group. I usually don't write reviews, but I decided to share my thoughts in hopes of improvements and because I would like to visit again. First, the atmosphere and interior design of the building were excellent. I liked it so much that I'd love to stay in other rooms besides the one I stayed in this time. The breakfast was delicious, and the lounge offered a variety of alcoholic beverages, making it a great place to relax within the hotel. However, there are some areas for improvement regarding staff service. For example, during breakfast explanations, there was no mention of drinks or other details; also, they forgot about IKYU benefits until pointed out. Additionally, when leaving the hotel, I noticed that staff at the front desk remained seated while bowing during farewells and did not open doors even though we were carrying luggage—this did not reflect PDS's renowned hospitality standards.

    This is my first time staying at this accommodation.

    Upon arrival, the staff warmly greeted us with a smile and promptly opened the door. Check-in took place in a spacious room filled with historical charm, where we enjoyed welcome tea and yokan, which brought a sense of comfort. We were given a detailed tour of both the existing beautiful historical building and the wing designed by Tadao Ando, where we stayed this time. It was refreshing to experience the harmony of architecture connecting past and present. The old stained glass was also stunningly beautiful. The lounge, available 24 hours, offered delicious sweets, fruits, prosciutto, smoked salmon, cheese, and more. I indulged in my favorite drink—wine—to my heart's content right away. The library and bar provided an open atmosphere where I could relax freely. I also appreciated that bringing items back to our room was allowed. As a request for improvement: it would have been nice to have cushions on the chairs in our twin room. The attentive service from all staff members conveyed their hospitality spirit beautifully; it made for an unforgettable and pleasant stay. Thank you very much!

    I wish I could have stayed longer.

    Stayed at a dream hotel. My goal was to stay in the room and play Nintendo games on my Switch. The all-inclusive drinks, the facility guide during check-in, and above all, the chic and calming atmosphere of the room were very satisfying. The thick curtains made the room completely dark when sleeping, which was surprisingly comfortable. I planned to take an early bath and relax, so I borrowed a lounge dress to have a late-night snack in the lounge. However, wearing just one piece felt slightly insecure around the chest area, and since I'm short, it felt like a long dress where I had to watch my step (the design and color of the dress itself were lovely). Also, I was looking forward to Athletia amenities as mentioned in their official FAQ but found out they are no longer provided (I stayed in a Short Stay Standard King Room; maybe it depends on the plan?). The p/d items were still good though. Similarly, while their FAQ mentioned bath salts would be available, they actually provided aromatic baths that you place into your tub with their packaging intact. Breakfast allowed unlimited orders from several menu options which was delightful. Salads were buffet-style where you could customize them with prosciutto or cheese always available through all-inclusive service—this was fun! The carefully prepared main dishes were brought directly to your table upon order—a much-appreciated touch. If new services are introduced someday, I might visit again. For now though, I'm fully satisfied with achieving my initial goal!

    Celebration of the 77th Birthday

    I stayed at the accommodation to celebrate my 77th birthday. At this age, my legs and back have become weaker, and since I stayed in the old building on the third floor with only stairs available, going up and down was quite challenging. Additionally, there were no handrails in the bathroom, which caused me to slip. Next time, I would like to use the new building.

    Relaxing Time

    Arrived earlier than check-in time intending only to leave luggage, but due to the rainy weather and the room being ready, we were kindly guided to our Room. The staff, including the person in charge, were attentive without being overbearing and showed thoughtful care. Not only the Room but also spaces like the lounge and library provided a quiet and comfortable atmosphere. The freedom to make your own drinks was much appreciated. Special consideration was given to my pregnant daughter's breakfast as well. Thank you for taking care of us. We would love to stay again if we have the chance!
