    A 4-Day, 3-Night Summer Retreat in Tateshina

On the third night, it unfortunately started raining in the afternoon. We arrived before 2:00 PM, but they kindly let us check in early. The Room was a wonderful Junior Suite. The bath was also great, though it felt a bit crowded. Dinner and breakfast were good, but the drinks seemed slightly expensive. The service was excellent, and we fully enjoyed our last day of our summer getaway at this lovely Ryokan with a Taisho-era romantic atmosphere.

This Accommodation has a rich sense of history.

While looking for an Accommodation to escape the summer heat, I was drawn by the impressive library I saw on the website and decided to travel out to Tateshina. As it sits at a high elevation, it was about 32°C down in the foothills, but by the time we arrived it was around 22°C. The air felt different the moment I stepped out of the car, and that coolness alone made the trip worthwhile. What I looked forward to most was the library. I heard there are about 2,200 Iwanami Bunko volumes alone, and seeing them in person was truly spectacular. I thought I’d pick one up and read for old times’ sake, but when I opened it I was surprised at how small the print is in older paperbacks. I used to read them without a second thought when I was younger, but now my eyes gave up first, so unfortunately I had to abandon reading pretty quickly. The dinner menu was presented with a postcard-like touch, and those thoughtful details are what stay with you. The bath water was slightly on the lukewarm side—perfect for me. The open-air bath in particular was wonderful; with the cool air on your skin you can soak for a long time in real comfort. This isn’t an Accommodation that flaunts luxury, but its cool climate, quiet setting, and that remarkable library have a unique charm. It’s an Accommodation that makes me want to come back next summer as well—finding another excuse to escape the heat.

We’d love to visit again in another season.

We were able to spend a wonderful day at the end of summer. From the moment we arrived at the Accommodation until we left, it felt like a truly relaxing time. All of the staff were excellent. Of course, the meals were also beautifully prepared, and we admired each dish before enjoying it. We were disappointed that no Room with an open-air bath was available, but we thoroughly enjoyed the Onsen at our preferred temperature in both the large public bath and the open-air bath, so we were very satisfied. We heard this was just after peak season, which seemed fortunate for our trip as seniors. Next time, we would love to visit in a different season as well. On the train ride home, we thought that traveling with this Accommodation as the sole purpose would be wonderful too. Lastly, thank you very much for kindly accommodating changes when they arose. Thank you again.

There was an incredible number of books.

We visited Tateshina to escape the summer heat, and it was truly cool and refreshing. I was overwhelmed by the impressive number of books, just as rumored. If we had stayed for several nights, we might have been able to read a bit more, but with only one night it was hard to even open a book. As this year marks their 100th anniversary, it’s clear why they have lasted so long—the staff’s warm hospitality was excellent. We stayed in a Room named after a famous author, and the open-air bath in the Room was spacious and very relaxing.

A welcoming Accommodation with exceptional hospitality.

The lobby’s book collection is impressive, and the antique atmosphere is wonderful. The building itself shows its age, but it has been beautifully renovated and well maintained. However, there is only one large public bath for men, which feels a bit lacking compared with the women’s facilities. At the dining area—perhaps by chance—we were assigned a corner Room and enjoyed delicious food and drinks while taking in a truly beautiful view. That said, it would have been nice to have a lighter option for the final curry dish. One thing that stood out during our stay was that there is a smoking area near the Seiryutei elevator; perhaps because guests smoke and then immediately use the elevator, it always smelled of cigarettes inside. I feel that making the entire Ryokan non-smoking would further enhance its overall atmosphere.

    Highly satisfied

The meals, the Room, and every other space were all wonderfully comfortable and relaxing. There was a great selection of books—many older titles in a variety of bindings, as well as plenty of new ones—so for a book lover like me, it felt like heaven. We were three women traveling together, and at night we didn’t even talk—we each quietly read our own books until we fell asleep. It was the best time. Next time, I’d love to do a Multiple Night Stay and fully immerse myself in reading, so I’d be happy if prices don’t go up too much or if there’s a good-value Multiple Night Stay Plan! The food was also delicious, and the Onsen Facility was excellent: non-slip flooring in the large public bath, a stone sauna, and private Onsen baths. The staff were also very kind and welcoming with warm smiles. Thank you very much.

The dinner course and breakfast were delicious.

The dishes created by the skilled chef were exceptionally delicious. Also, while the Room has an open-air bath, there is also a private open-air bath. The lobby has a sense of history and a collection of books, and you can feel the culture throughout the property. I completely fell in love with this place.

    We stayed cool and comfortable.

I visited looking forward to the Onsen, but there was a slight chlorine smell. Given the times, I suppose it can’t be helped. The meals were very delicious and thoughtfully prepared, but soup curry was served at the end, and as seniors we would have preferred to finish with rice and pickles. Breakfast was very tasty and satisfying. We will visit again next summer.

An Accommodation that feels good for both mind and body

This Accommodation was a relaxing retreat for calm, mature guests, surrounded by an abundance of books. With high ceilings, beautiful lighting, and walls that serve as a library, the interior—unified in deep brown tones—was tasteful, impeccably clean, and truly impressive. Through the large windows we could see a blue sky and dazzling greenery, and the coolness of the splashing mountain stream came right through. Old libraries often have a distinctive smell, but this Accommodation had well-maintained air conditioning to prevent the books from becoming moldy. The dining area was beautifully designed as well, and the elaborate dishes were delicious. Even though I’m not fond of game meat, I enjoyed everything. From steak to soup curry at the end… there were so many treats that I wished I could have eaten it all in two rounds. The baths were also spotless; the open-air bath was spacious and wonderful. From the private bath we could clearly see the stars… I did wish we could turn off the bath lights, but complete darkness might be unsafe. The hot stone sauna was great too—I checked constellations with my limited knowledge while looking up at a sky full of stars reflected on the ceiling, and worked up a pleasant sweat. After eating my fill and trying every bath, I fell fast asleep without getting to read as much as I wanted. The sleep was deep and high quality. An Accommodation that definitely makes you want to come back again.

    Everything was excel...

Everything was excellent. The meals were thoughtfully varied so they never felt repetitive even on a Multiple Night Stay, and allergy accommodations were handled thoroughly. The service level was also very high. If I had to mention one thing, there is no doorbell for the Room, so I sometimes didn’t notice knocking even when I was inside. Since I don’t bring my phone into the bath and there are only two room keys, that was the only inconvenience—so I hope it can be improved. That’s truly the only point. I would love to visit again.

    Thank you very much.

To escape the intense summer heat, we planned a trip to Tateshina. The Onsen had a wonderful scent, and we thoroughly enjoyed both the open-air bath in our Room and the large public bath. The cuisine was thoughtfully crafted and unlike anything we’ve had at other Onsen Accommodations. We also enjoyed plenty of delicious Nagano wines—sparkling, white, and red. Finally, although I accidentally left something behind, you contacted us right away, so we were able to turn back without having to go too far. We sincerely appreciate the staff’s prompt response.

I stayed here again in May and July.

Upon entering the lounge, you’re immediately overwhelmed by the vast library, and you can really feel the history of this Accommodation. This time we stayed in a 70 m² Room in Tateshina Club, which felt a bit too spacious for two people. We loved the planetarium-style hot stone spa so much that we made our next Reservation during our stay last May. The French-style dinner featuring local ingredients was also delicious, and we were looking forward to trying the summer seasonal menu. As it seems to be this Accommodation’s specialty, it was disappointing that several dishes were the same as last time. We wished we had waited a little longer before returning. Also, having the bar close at 9:30 p.m. felt a bit early, and we would have liked to use the hot stone spa in the morning as well. If those were available, we feel this would be an outstanding Accommodation with great value for the price. Next time, we’d like to return around next autumn and stay in a 45 m² Room with an open-air bath in Miyamatei.

    We had a comfortable stay.

I had a very comfortable stay. There are more books than in a typical bookstore, so it was fun to browse freely and follow my curiosity. I would have liked the dinner to be a bit more substantial.

    Premium Check-in

I used the Chino Station Shuttle Service. When boarding the shuttle bus, I was asked, “May we take your luggage to your Room?” Then, upon arrival, I checked in with a welcome drink in a lovely lounge—and my luggage was already delivered to the Room I was shown. At Hotels with porter service, you usually hand over your luggage at the entrance after getting off the bus, so having the service start “when boarding” was a first for me. It’s a small difference, but it made check-in feel VIP and truly welcoming. The Room, meals, and baths were wonderful—just as everyone’s Reviews said—but I have two small requests: - Sleepwear (pajamas) They’re comfortable, but for someone with a longer torso like me, the top is a bit short. If it were made slightly longer, my stomach wouldn’t get cold and I’d feel more comfortable. - Tissues in the Room For such a spacious Room, having only one box by the sink feels insufficient. At least one more location would be appreciated (unless I simply missed it—sorry if so).

A Delicious Accommodation with a Collection of 35,000 Books

The Accommodation was spacious throughout, quiet, and relaxing—ideal for adults. From greeting our car on arrival to attentive table service, everything was excellent. The large public bath was roomy and included an open-air bath and a stone sauna, and we also enjoyed the private open-air bath. It was a peaceful place to unwind without any noise or poor manners from inbound tourists, and we would love to return.

Issues with the service and the seasoning of the food.

During the rainy season, with unstable weather, we stayed for 2 nights and 3 days expecting an “Accommodation you’ll want to extend your stay at” and a cozy retreat. In the end, it was a disappointing stay: the Hotel’s physical aspects and an excessive number of “requests” that felt close to imposing rules on guests were far too noticeable. For guests staying for an extended period, what do they expect from the Hotel staff? With prices rising across the board—utilities and labor costs included—I believe it would be better to train employees who can understand and deliver the level of hospitality and service worthy of this price. During our stay, we could hear a conversation next door between another guest and staff; one staff member made remarks that were hard to listen to, which left me feeling disappointed as well. The Japanese cuisine showed ingenuity from ingredients to seasoning, but the Western menu was not well balanced in flavor, and there were no dishes that left a lasting impression. Rather than “the natural taste of the ingredients,” it felt like we were served dish after dish with little contrast or definition in flavor. I imagine it takes great effort to preserve such a treasured historic building while also adapting to the convenience guests seek today and maintaining its value for years to come. However, because you have overwhelming strengths unlike any other Hotel, I sincerely hope you will make improvements so that this place continues to be chosen by many people for years ahead.

    A Moment of Happiness!

I’d known about Oyuyu for a long time, and at last I was able to stay here. The Accommodation is away from town, surrounded only by the river and the woods—nothing else in sight. It felt like stepping into another world. The moment I entered the lobby, I was overwhelmed by the books; it’s as if the walls themselves are bookshelves. Unfortunately, my eyesight has made it hard to read novels, so I settled for just two picture books and enjoyed a small taste of the atmosphere. Right after check-in, I made a Reservation for a private open-air bath and headed to my Room. After unpacking, I went straight to the bath. In front of me were only the river and forest—an incredibly soothing escape from everyday life. Since this was a Multiple Night Stay, my days became a simple rhythm: bath, meal, rest—bath, meal, rest. With each cycle I could feel my mind detoxing. One nourishing dish after another arrived at dinner. Nothing flashy, yet somehow both my stomach and my heart felt deeply satisfied. It’s rare to find an Accommodation like this. As it’s an older building, the Room was kept very clean, but there were a few spots that made me pause—still, its charm more than outweighed any minor imperfections. Thank you so much for taking care of me; I will definitely return. “Next time, I’d love to stay for three nights.”

    I was able to relax....

I was able to relax. I read a book in the Room, but the rattan chair was hard—if there had been a sofa, couch, or other soft chair, it would have been perfect. All the staff were smiling and very pleasant. The meal was also great; I really enjoyed the soup curry.

    Satisfied

I’m a repeat guest. The place has been renovated and was cleaner than before. The food was delicious, and I was very satisfied. Since there is a stamp card, I will come again. However, it would be perfect if coffee were included with breakfast or if coffee were provided in the Room. The shop also sells lovely items. Thank you very much.

    Wonderful atmosphere

From the entrance, the sheer number of books and the building’s stately presence create an atmosphere that feels almost intimidating—in a good way—keeping anything flashy at bay, yet still carrying a nostalgic scent of Japan. A wonderful Ryokan in the mountains. We stayed in a Room with an open-air bath, but it seemed a bit difficult to adjust the temperature of the free-flowing hot spring water, so we asked for adjustments a few times and it became comfortable.

Next time, during the snowy season...

We stayed with you at the beginning of autumn last time, and this time during the season of fresh greenery. The Room renovated in February was wonderful, and the view from the open-air bath was especially amazing. Everything about this Accommodation was truly excellent, but we would appreciate a few improvements. First, regarding the size range of the in-house loungewear. Only M and L sizes were available, but my husband couldn’t wear them because even L was too small. The same applied to the pajamas—only one free size was available—so in the end he couldn’t wear either. We stay at various Accommodations, and most places provide larger sizes such as XL, which we usually borrow. If possible, we would be grateful if you could offer larger sizes of loungewear and pajamas in the future. The other point is the Onsen temperature—it felt a little lukewarm. This time it was fine because it was a warm season, but my husband and I said that in winter it would be too cold to enjoy. Aside from those two points, the meals were delicious, the facilities were lovely, and everything else was truly outstanding. We are planning to stay again during the snowy season next time, so we look forward to visiting you again. We can’t wait for a snow-viewing bath already.

    Blissful Moments

I planned a trip to Tateshina with my daughter because we wanted to see Mishaka Pond. My daughter suggested “Tateshina Shinyu Onsen, founded in 1926,” so we made a Reservation. For my daughter, who loves discovering wonderful books and reading them, and for me, who reads over 100 books a year, it was an amazing place. In the lobby, I immediately found a book I’d been wanting to read for a long time, went up to our Room, and started reading right away. When we tried the women-only open-air bath, it felt like we had it all to ourselves—absolutely perfect. Our private dining meal was excellent in both quality and quantity. We enjoyed the stone sauna (ganbanyoku), relaxed in the open-air bath in our Room, and spent blissful time reading at leisure. Since I had told them we would be going to Mishaka Pond early in the morning, they kindly parked our car nearby for us—such thoughtful service. Everyone’s hospitality was truly pleasant, and my daughter and I agreed that we’d love to come again together. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us.

    A Luxurious Experience

Thanks to the thoughtful interior design and attentive service, we had a wonderful time. We checked in around 4:00 PM, but I wished we had arrived earlier so we could relax on the sofa and read a book. The meals were delicious, and both our eyes and stomachs were completely satisfied. However, it was disappointing that the Wi‑Fi did not connect at all in the Room.

We stayed here to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We were truly satisfied with the calm, soothing atmosphere throughout— from the lounge filled with countless books and the gentle scent of incense, to the guest room facing nature and the Onsen. It felt like a luxury simply to be there, forgetting about time and our phones. As we don’t eat large portions, the amount of food was just right for us, and everything was delicious from start to finish. The tableware was beautiful as well, and we could feel a refined sense of style in every detail. We are grateful to have found such a wonderful Ryokan. We would love to visit again.

A book lover’s dream. I was able to relax and unwind at a very leisurely pace.

I was planning a trip from Suwa to Tateshina, and since I also love Yasujiro Ozu’s films, I chose Shin-yu Onsen “Yubae no Ma.” There was a welcome drink, and both dinner and breakfast were served in a private room in the kitchen area. For dinner, I especially enjoyed the soy milk soup and soup curry; for breakfast, the overnight-dried char, the fresh vegetable buffet, and kanten jelly were excellent. In the morning, I also walked along Ozu’s Walking Path. There were many Iwanami Bunko and Misuzu Shobo titles, but also newer books, magazines, and manga. They even had the manga “Hon Nara Uru Hodo,” which made me feel the collection had been curated by someone with great taste. If your budget allows it, staying two nights or more in summer may be ideal. The property displayed an altitude of 1,350 m.

The Saito Mokichi Suite is comfortable!

We stayed from 3/25 to 3/27 for a two-night Multiple Night Stay. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t great, but we were soothed by the elegant atmosphere inside the building, the wonderful library collection, and the courteous service. The Saito Mokichi Suite has a gas fireplace, and it was warm and truly comfortable throughout our stay. We also appreciated the down vest. We enjoyed all of the meals; in particular, the curry and steak on the first night were excellent. During a Multiple Night Stay, we found ourselves saying that by the second morning we start craving bread for breakfast! The only disappointment was the private open-air bath. There is no washing area. Thinking that everyone might just get undressed and jump straight in took away from our ability to relax fully. The changing room facilities also felt shabby. It wasn’t quite at a level we could confidently recommend.

    Lots of books

Books are placed everywhere—not only in the lobby, but also in the hallways and Rooms. It might even have more books than a mediocre library. You’re welcome to take books to your Room, making this Accommodation irresistible for book lovers. The food was delicious, and the large tatami-floored public bath was very relaxing. The amenities, such as bamboo toothbrushes and hairbrushes, also showed great consideration for the environment. However, only one free-size pajama set was provided, and the waistband on the pants was tight, so I ended up not using it. That was my only drawback.

A blissful anniversary surrounded by books. It was a place where the whole family could smile.

We stayed here for a special anniversary, and it turned out to be an even more wonderful stay than we had expected. Spending time surrounded by an overwhelming collection of books was truly exceptional, and we were also soothed by the calm atmosphere created by fellow guests who love books. Our whole family was deeply impressed by the humorous service from the male staff member who looked after us at the restaurant (Mr. O). Even our energetic son quickly warmed up to him, and he was able to stay seated with a smile until the very end thanks to his support. We are sincerely grateful for his warm kindness toward children. This holiday, spent with our favorite book in hand, became the best celebration for us. We would love to visit again in a different season.

    Highly satisfied.

We stayed here to celebrate our grandchild’s acceptance into high school. This was our third stay, and every time we visit, we can truly feel the spirit of this Accommodation, built around a Taisho Romantic concept. The meals are always fresh and innovative, and delicious. My daughter and grandchildren, who were staying for the first time, were very satisfied and said they would love to come again. I’m glad I brought them. No matter what season we visit, there is a quiet, soothing atmosphere here. Please continue to preserve this ambiance for years to come.
