The famous Shirahone hot spring, Awanoyu, was wonderful!!
I chose this Accommodation for my first trip to Kamikochi. Although the weather wasn’t great, I was truly able to enjoy the famous Shirahone Onsen. I only learned after arriving that there is a mixed-gender bath. Because you can’t see above the shoulders when crouching, and women have bathing garments available, couples and friends can bathe with peace of mind. Surrounded by greenery and with slightly lukewarm water, I could relax for a long time with my eyes closed. I think it was the longest I’ve ever soaked in my life—it was wonderful. The gentleman who assisted us was very kind and shared a lot of valuable information. Breakfast and dinner each day were just the right amount for us. We will definitely come again!! We also met a bear cub on the road a little higher up. I was surprised to see a wild bear for the first time, but it wasn’t dangerous. I want to tell everyone about this place, but part of me also wants to keep it secret. To the owner of this Onsen Accommodation and everyone there—please keep it going for many years to come. We’re cheering you on. Thank you very much.

It was the best hidden hot spring in every way.
My family requested a trip to Kamikochi and Shirahone Onsen, so I made a Reservation at the long-admired Awanoyu with its milky-blue waters—and they were thrilled. When we arrived, we were impressed by the thoughtful attention to every detail, and by the chef’s outstanding dishes featuring local ingredients and seasonal flavors. The Onsen was unlike any we had experienced before, leaving both body and mind completely refreshed. We were also deeply moved by the understated hospitality of the proprietress and all the staff. We’ve found an Accommodation we want to return to right away. Thank you for such wonderful memories!!

The meals were nothing special, especially.
This is a semi-secluded hot spring, so you can’t expect luxury. Even so, I don’t think it’s an Accommodation that IKYU would feature. Drinks are overpriced.

It was a wonderful trip.
This historic Onsen offered excellent service and meals.

It was a wonderful accommodation.
Both dinner and breakfast offered a wide variety of dishes and were very delicious. The bath (Onsen) had excellent water, and the amenities were more than satisfactory. We also enjoyed the homemade apricots and simmered beans prepared by the proprietress. In the Room, there were bite-sized Koshihikari brown rice rice balls, perhaps as a late-night snack. We would like to visit again in autumn or winter.

At last, my long-awaited visit has come true.
Three of us who joined the company at the same time stayed here together. Decades ago, the same three of us had planned to stay here, but an accident forced us to cancel. At last, our first visit. We soaked in the famous open-air bath and enjoyed a luxurious meal. The landlady’s homemade apricots and mildly spicy stir-fry were thoughtful touches we really appreciated. The water temperature is indeed on the low side, but it was no problem in this season—in fact, it let us soak slowly and thoroughly. Also, for some reason there were few guests on the day we stayed, so we felt lucky to be able to enjoy the Onsen at a relaxed pace anytime. It was also nice that we could eat without worrying about other guests in the dining area. The soba restaurant in Azumino that a staff member recommended was delicious as well (though the tempura portion was almost too generous). From start to finish, the service was pleasant and welcoming.

The lukewarm bath is amazing!
In any case, the lukewarm free-flowing hot spring water straight from the source is wonderful! The meals are also delicious. I’m sure it’s difficult to maintain, but I hope you will continue to preserve and cherish it for years to come.

I enjoyed the Onsen.
I missed visiting “Shirahone Onsen” when traveling to Kamikochi and Norikura Kogen, but since there was availability for a 1-night stay on May 1–2, I booked without hesitation. The large public bath was great, but the open-air bath was outstanding. The cherry blossoms were still in bloom, and I could enjoy them while soaking. The open-air bath is available 24 hours a day. Dinner was beautiful to look at and delicious as well. After dinner, I went back to the open-air bath again. Two other guests were there—both from overseas—and they seemed to be relaxing and enjoying the Onsen at their own pace. I soaked for about 40 minutes while gazing at the star-filled sky and the moon. That was possible because the water temperature is around 37–38°C. The next morning, my wife also enjoyed the open-air bath with me wearing a bathing cover-up, and she said she was glad we stayed at “Awanoyu.” When we checked out, the staff told us about Hotaka Shrine as a local power spot, and they even gave us a Nagano roadside station map, which we made good use of. We were able to enjoy our drive home as well. Since this visit was in May, I hope to return during the autumn foliage season next time. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

The open-air bath is amazing, but...
I’ve stayed here many times. The open-air bath is truly amazing no matter how often I use it. However, I think it’s about time the Facility was renovated due to its age. Also, while the meals are delicious, it’s disappointing that there isn’t much variety. Because I’m a fan, this is a candid comment—but I hope you’ll highlight more strengths beyond just the baths.

The meals and the open-air bath are excellent.
Japanese-style Room—I've stayed here several times, and the cleaning is thorough, so it’s spotless. I’ve stayed multiple times, and it’s always clean. The meals were also excellent—appetizers, simmered dishes, fish, and meat; everything was delicious and very satisfying. The hone-zake had a wonderful roasted aroma, and I ended up ordering an extra serving. The open-air bath is spacious, perfect for relaxing at a leisurely pace. About 37°C? The water is on the lukewarm side, so you can take your time and warm up gradually. If you prefer hotter water, there’s an indoor bath as well, which should be more than enough. My spouse and I bathed together; since the water is milky white, there was nothing to feel self-conscious about—it's a great open-air bath.

We stayed for one ni...
We stayed for one night on March 29. It was our first time at Shirahone Onsen, and from the moment we arrived, the sulfur scent made us feel like we were truly at an Onsen. We arrived a little early, but they let us into our Room so we could relax. At 3:00 p.m., we headed to the Onsen. My child and I prefer hotter baths, so the 38°C water felt too lukewarm for us, and we used the heated bath instead. It felt wonderful—easily one of the best Onsens we’ve visited. There was also a table tennis set just outside the bath area, which our family really enjoyed. The food was delicious, and the meat was very tender. My child is usually picky, but said it was tasty and ate almost everything. We will definitely come back again. I rated amenities four stars because there wasn’t a comb or shower cap in the area outside the bath; otherwise, everything was excellent.

If only the hot water were a bit warmer…
We booked at the last minute using a last-minute discount. Our Room was called “Sui,” and it was very spacious—we were extremely satisfied! All of the staff were very pleasant, and we had a great time during our meals as well. The rice porridge cooked in the Onsen water in the morning was delicious. That said, I understand it can’t be helped since it’s free-flowing from the source, but I felt it could have been a little hotter. Other than the water temperature, everything was perfect. Thank you very much.

Onsen Temperature
The open-air bath was only 38°C, so it didn’t warm me up. The indoor bath was 42°C, but it was too small to use. It may not be possible when the Accommodation is crowded. Other guests had the same complaints. The food was delicious. I probably wouldn’t stay again.

Mixed bathing with inappropriate individuals, and the accommodation's response was terrible.
We stayed as a couple in our late 20s. - Encountered an elderly man near the women-only entrance to the mixed Onsen, singing loudly and looking repeatedly at us. - Another elderly man was seen standing completely naked in the corridor leading to each Onsen around 10 PM. These incidents were reported, but the Ryokan's response was inadequate: - Called front desk at 11 PM; male security staff responded and promised to check surveillance cameras in the morning. - Next morning, asked for a manager but received dismissive responses. Staff claimed they "forgot" about the issue. - Follow-up calls led to offers of partial compensation (e.g., waiving wine charges) instead of addressing concerns directly. - Finally spoke with Okami (manager), who appeared unprepared and avoided direct answers. Overall, disappointing handling of serious issues.

Day-use bathing might be a good option.
A secluded onsen with natural hot spring water. The benefits of the spring water were truly remarkable. The bath was excellent, but the accommodation itself felt like stepping back into the Showa era. For those seeking rustic charm and tranquility, this might be ideal. However, the interior, room, and dining area were cold. The room's temperature control was hard to locate, and it only became warm after requesting a heater. The dining area also had drafts coming through the windows, making it difficult to enjoy meals comfortably. In the morning, the lobby heater was set at 12°C (54°F), which made it easy to feel chilled while walking around after bathing. Overall, apart from the onsen water itself, other aspects were disappointing.

The staff in charge was kind and helpful. I stayed here for the first time in 40 years, and the large open-air bath still retained its charm as before. The new building was also clean, spacious, and pleasant.

This is my second visit to Shirahone Onsen. Both the open-air bath and indoor bath at Awanoyu were charming and satisfying. The proximity to Kamikochi was also great. If the morning coffee were a bit better, it would have been perfect.

The open-air bath with the autumn leaves starting to change was amazing.
The large open-air bath is mixed-gender, which might make women hesitant to enter, but with the provided bathing wear, my spouse and I were able to enjoy the spacious bath together while admiring the beginning of autumn foliage. The water temperature was just right, and we bathed both in the morning and evening.

I had a relaxing stay.
I visited Shirahone Onsen by car for the first time. The journey included some challenging roads, making me wonder if there was really a Ryokan in such a location, but the historic accommodation building was wonderfully nostalgic and fascinating. The Onsen had milky white water with excellent quality, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The meals were very delicious as well. I am grateful for the courteous service provided by all the staff members.

It was relaxing.
Due to cancellations caused by COVID-19 and my health issues, I was finally able to visit on my third reservation. Although I found the amenities in the onsen changing room slightly inconvenient, the rustic atmosphere added charm and was enjoyable. Additionally, the fresh flowers placed next to each guest room door and thoughtful touches like late-night rice balls were heartwarming, making it not just about the onsen but a truly relaxing experience overall.

Traditional Ryokan
We chose this place to celebrate my parents' 77th birthday. The building is not new, but it has a charming, traditional atmosphere that is very relaxing. The staff were kind and helpful, for which we are very grateful. The food was extremely delicious! It’s a small Onsen town, but I highly recommend it for those who want to unwind!

I had a very relaxing time. The natural hot spring was more potent than I expected, and I noticed some throat discomfort after returning home. However, the smooth feeling on my skin lasted all day, and my partner's eczema also improved significantly.

A charming and tasteful accommodation.
I had always wanted to try the milky white open-air bath. Although the water was lukewarm, it was perfect for this season, and I thoroughly enjoyed it while admiring the surrounding plants. The open-air bath is famous, but the wooden washing area and indoor bath also have a wonderful traditional charm. I understand maintaining them must be challenging, but I hope they are preserved as they are. The meals were unpretentious and made excellent use of fresh ingredients; both the grilled dishes on ceramic plates and the char fish were incredibly delicious. The hospitality struck a perfect balance between attentiveness and friendliness, allowing me to relax and enjoy my stay fully. This is an accommodation I would love to visit again!

It was a rainy day, ...
It was a rainy day, but the trip became an unforgettable experience! We stayed at the new accommodation and enjoyed the white mixed-gender Onsen. Our skin felt so smooth afterward! The accommodation itself was a beautiful building, and we were fully satisfied with the delicious meals. The Onsen porridge had such a gentle flavor that I would love to have it again! I am deeply grateful for the kind hospitality of the staff who assisted us. Thanks to their recommendation, we discovered delicious grape aperitif wine and managed to purchase it the very next day. The photo taken as a keepsake has become a cherished memory! Thank you so much for everything! I look forward to traveling again someday.

A hidden hot spring for complete relaxation of mind and body
Just when you start to wonder how deep into the mountains you're going, this accommodation appears. Truly a hidden gem. The milky blue mixed-gender open-air bath is delightful, the food is incredibly delicious, and it was a rejuvenating experience for both body and mind. It wasn't until I arrived that I fully understood its location on the map, and upon visiting the next destination of my journey, I discovered that Mount Norikura was nearby. Thanks to this, I got to enjoy the snow walls that can only be seen in early spring! Special thanks to O-san, one of the staff members and a true travel professional!

The gentle hot water was wonderful.
Gentle on the skin with a pleasant sulfur aroma, enjoying the Onsen while watching the snow was truly amazing. The source water is lukewarm, but there are also heated flowing baths available. Alternating between the lukewarm and heated baths seemed to boost metabolism. The mixed-gender outdoor bath is also lukewarm, allowing us to relax and enjoy a snowy Onsen experience while chatting with my partner. Please be cautious as the ground can be very slippery due to the quality of the Onsen water—take precautions and stay safe! The food was delicious as well. My favorites at dinner were grilled salt-seasoned char fish, croquettes made with Onsen rice porridge, and Touji soba noodles. For breakfast, I especially loved the Onsen rice porridge again! A small rice ball served as a late-night snack was a delightful touch. Although the building is old, it has been well-maintained and provided a comfortable stay. I would love to visit again!

It's such a long-established Ryokan that
Hello, I visited for the first time on the 12th. The hot water was really good, but there was only one hairdryer in the changing room. There were no amenities, no Room slippers, and I was surprised by various things. The meal was so-so.

The Onsen was quite good, but
The meals and bath were quite good. However, I don't think they are particularly outstanding for the cost. The bath was generally lukewarm, and I feel it could be 1-2 degrees warmer. The building is old, but the interior was clean. There were some disappointing aspects, such as forgetting to lay out the futon during meals, which is why I gave this rating.

The bath was amazing!
The hot spring was very nice. The temperature was slightly warm, allowing for a long soak. It warmed me up from the core, and my skin felt smooth. Aside from the hot spring, I felt that other aspects were a bit lacking. If the food had been a little better, it would have been a perfect satisfaction.

Milky white hot spring
The milky white hot spring in the open-air bath was nice. The color of the water is unlike any other. I think it would be good for those who like lukewarm water.
