  Good.

  After 20 years, the bath was still great, and although meals were previously served in the Room, the food was excellent. The staff were all very pleasant. The garden remains as beautiful as it was 20 years ago. While I like the nostalgic feel of the building, a bit more renovation might be better.

  I have stayed at the...

  I have stayed at the Property several times, and the open-air bath with natural Onsen water was smoother and more pleasant than the water in the main building. It was cold enough to feel like it might snow, but I warmed up with the Onsen and the kotatsu. I was surprised by the large number of foreign tourists. The crab miso soup at breakfast was delicious. I often visit Hakone in search of good Onsen, so I look forward to staying here again.

  Astonished by the outdatedness of the Room's facilities.

  We stayed as a family during the winter season. We were informed that the property was a renovated custom-built house, so we expected some degree of antiquity. However, since it is advertised as a luxury ryokan, we assumed it would have a charming old-world feel. In reality, it was more of an unmaintained oldness, with outdated room facilities and gaps in the walls and floors left as they were, allowing drafts to enter the room. Additionally, there was an old portable air conditioner in the room, which unexpectedly turned off after 11 PM. As it was too cold to sleep without it, we had to wake up periodically to turn it back on. The most distressing issue was the smell. It seemed like there was a sewage leak, as there were several strong air fresheners placed under the floor to mask the odor, resulting in a mix of air freshener and faint sewage smell in the room. (We stayed in a first-floor room, so we are unsure if the smell was present on the second floor or in other rooms.) My husband is sensitive to smells and could hardly sleep, while I am less sensitive but still found the odor bothersome enough to keep me awake, eventually resorting to wearing a mask to sleep. We had planned to spend a relaxing holiday with our family, but due to the discomfort and lack of sleep, we were unable to relax in the room and ended up feeling too tired to enjoy sightseeing in Hakone, ultimately returning home. If this had been a 10,000 yen per night stay, we might have laughed it off as "it is what it is," but at 40,000 yen per person, totaling 80,000 yen for the couple, it was far from amusing and left us with a rather unpleasant memory. We did inform the property about the smell, and while they seemed aware, all we received was an apology. If you are going to advertise as a luxury ryokan, please address the issues properly rather than masking them with air fresheners. While we may have been just another guest for the ryokan, for us, the stay was a significant and cherished occasion. It was a disappointing experience.
