I’ve always wanted to visit Koyo.

I usually stay at small Accommodations, but this time we decided to stay at Koyo, which I had been wanting to visit. Since it’s a large Onsen Accommodation, I arrived with both excitement and a bit of anxiety about what it would be like. First, the Room had been renovated and came with an open-air bath, so I was very satisfied. All drinks in the refrigerator were included in the Room rate. There was more than we could finish—sake, wine, beer, juice, and more—and taking them home was allowed as well. The open-air bath had a gentle water quality, and I enjoyed it many times. However, since the indoor bath and the open-air bath are on opposite sides of the Room, I did find the layout a little inconvenient. Dinner featured Yamagata beef steak, and every dish was delicious. That said, compared with other Accommodations we’ve visited before it wasn’t bad at all—but I’m giving one less star in hopes they’ll aim even higher. Breakfast was a buffet with many Yamagata-inspired items; the imoni stew was especially delicious. From our attendant onward, everyone was kind and smiling. The service manners felt so well trained that it almost reminded me of “the land of mice,” making for truly pleasant hospitality. It became a wonderful memory for my wife’s birthday. Thank you very much.

    A long-established Accommodation

This was my third stay. I usually stay here during the bar season. This time, I wanted to relax with my daughter, so we chose a Room with an open-air bath and the Yamagata beef sukiyaki Plan. The entire property was spotless and clean, with well-stocked amenities and a great shop. From the Room we had a panoramic view of Kaminoyama city, and best of all, the open-air bath was at the perfect temperature and left our skin silky smooth. Everything at dinner was delicious and we were completely full. One request: it would be appreciated if we could add the sukiyaki beef later, as it stays more tender that way. The pudding was truly amazing—I even bought some for myself to take home. I’ll definitely be back to this Accommodation I love.

We had a wonderful trip to Yamagata.

I had trouble choosing a Ryokan. I had made a Reservation at an affiliated Hotel, but somehow I ended up booking the same dates twice and didn’t realize it was a double booking. Koyo kindly called to let me know—thank you so much. The location was very easy to find with navigation, and even though it was my first time there, I arrived without getting lost at all. We were welcomed with warm smiles and cheerful greetings, and the explanations were clear and easy to understand. The baths were spacious and wonderful. There were many types of shampoo to choose from. We also booked a private Onsen, where we could relax fully—and it was so much fun chatting while soaking. And the hair dryer was that luxury model! My hair loved it. After the bath, we could take our time before dinner. Everything we tried was delicious. Breakfast was buffet-style with lots of local specialties, and you could really see the thoughtful touches. It wasn’t a bed but futons—and they were incredibly comfortable. The pillow was excellent too. It was a truly satisfying trip: great food, great sleep, and total relaxation. When we left, everyone saw us off, and they took a commemorative Hanagasa photo for us in front of the entrance—such a lovely memory. The building wasn’t brand-new by any means, but it felt clean and bright. Also, there seemed to be many younger staff members. That probably means it’s an easy place to work—and their positive energy made us feel great as guests. Thanks to Koyo, my first trip to Yamagata was genuinely enjoyable. It became a place I’d definitely love to stay at again. And that toilet… quite unique. It gave us something to laugh about!

    A Comfortable Accommodation

I usually try to avoid staying at a Ryokan that gets lively and noisy with group guests, but… maybe because this Ryokan is quite large and we were in a different wing? There were group guests staying, yet it didn’t feel very noisy, and we were able to relax. It was only at breakfast that it felt lively (lol). Dinner was in a private room, so we could take our time and enjoy dishes like Koyo’s beef stew, which was great. I asked if it would be okay to have dessert in the Room since I was full, and the staff kindly delivered it all the way to our Room. At other Ryokan, you usually have to carry it back yourself, but Koyo was different. Impressive! And the pudding was outstanding! If it were closer, I definitely would have bought some as a souvenir… but instead I decided I’ll come back to this Ryokan specifically to buy it. (I did enjoy the Yamagata pudding sold in front of the Accommodation in my Room before checkout.) Many celebrities have visited as well—I really feel Koyo is a power spot. Both my father and I took a deep breath before heading home. I’d love to visit again when I want some pudding and an energy boost! The staff kept just the right distance, which made our stay very comfortable. Please keep things just as they are. (Just one request: I’d appreciate a bit more cleaning on the balcony.)

    Hospitality

Some parts of the Facility have been renovated, while others still retain a sense of history. Even the areas that feel older are kept clean and well maintained, so we had a very comfortable stay. The staff at the dining area provided pleasant service, and while the meals were not unusual, the balance of flavor and portion size was excellent.

Overall, it was clean and pleasant.

Although it was a same-day Reservation, we stayed in a bright, newly renovated Room that felt clean and fresh. This time, as an IKYU Diamond member, there happened to be availability at the dinner venue, and we were kindly upgraded to a private dining room. We enjoyed a seasonal kaiseki meal and pleasant conversation with the staff member serving us, making for a relaxed and enjoyable evening. The pudding served after the meal was delicious; we heard it was sold at the shop, so we bought some to take home. The Onsen was also great with free-flowing natural spring water, but unfortunately the changing area was unusually hot and not comfortable for staying long. Also, the lobby area on the first floor was crowded with tour groups and felt difficult to use.

    Yamagata Zao Sightseeing

Although it seems like a historic Ryokan, it must have been renovated repeatedly, as it didn’t feel old at all. We were escorted to our room, and while many of the staff seemed young, everyone was attentive and thoughtful, which impressed us overall. In particular, the male staff member who explained dinner and the woman with round glasses at the breakfast entrance both left a very positive impression. The amenity bar in the lobby was excellent—especially having face masks, which delighted me. We stayed in a guest room with a semi-open-air bath, and we appreciate being assigned one on the Zao side—thank you. Dinner was changed to a private room for an additional fee. It was a little disappointing that there was some dampness typical of this season, or rather a slightly musty smell. Thank you for taking care of us.

A Hospitable Accommodation That Will Exceed Your Expectations

We chose the assigned Room, and it was spacious and very comfortable. The staff were extremely courteous, offering us drinks and even taking photos for us after checkout, which made us feel truly welcomed. As part of the Accommodation was under renovation, they apologized for any inconvenience and even gave us some sweets. We would definitely like to stay again.

A truly wonderful Accommodation (repeat stay)

While the building’s exterior undeniably shows its age, the guest rooms are clean and well maintained. The private dining room was… disappointing, but the service, baths, and meals were all excellent. Also, thanks to an IKYU.com Reservation, we received wine service and more—very nice! The private dining room was….

    Come back again!

Everything was flawless. I was able to experience the essence of Japan together with my family who had returned from overseas. Throughout our stay, we constantly felt heartfelt hospitality—natural and comfortable, never overbearing. The Facility also feels spacious and well-appointed. Opening the one-and-a-half-panel shoji in our roomy guest room revealed a magnificent view of the Zao mountain range. We were delighted time and again by the breakfast and dinner menus, impressed by the very attentive service at the souvenir shop, and thoroughly enjoyed the large public bath as well. The dinner venue, however, truly surprised us: we had been told it was a private room, but when the sliding doors were opened we were astonished—the grand hall with its gold folding screens was far beyond what the word “private room” can convey. At reception, explanations were brisk and perfectly thorough, with a great sense of balance in omitting details that didn’t need to be mentioned. Above all, I found comfort in the graceful manners of all staff members. The attendants? Dining staff, housekeeping staff—everyone we passed greeted us with a smile. We are also grateful for the complimentary gift from IKYU. Thanks to it, we were able to relax at ease.

    Solo travel.

I was able to relax every time. Taking my time in the bath helped relieve my stress. The Room’s open-air bath was spacious—large enough for three or four people—and very comfortable. One request: since the meals were the same each time, I would have liked to try some different dishes as well.

    The Onsen was great.

Both the private bath and the large public bath were great, and the Onsen was excellent. We chose a Japanese-style Room, which was also decent. For both dinner and breakfast, we ate at tables in the dining hall. The staff seemed very busy managing everything, but it was good. Overall, it felt like it could deserve a full 5 out of 5, but I couldn’t quite feel fully satisfied, so I’m giving it a 4.

    Ultimate Massage Experience

The massages at the spa salon were exceptionally skilled. I felt incredibly satisfied for the price, and I was lucky to experience such great value.\nI would even like to visit again just for the massage.\nWe stayed in Yamagata for three nights, and the imoni stew here was the best we had. I hope the restaurant where you could choose à la carte dishes will reopen. For an older couple like us, the kaiseki course was simply too much, so we chose to eat out for dinner—but there are few restaurants nearby, they close early, and you also need to check their days off.

Attentive service, even at a large Hotel!

This was my second stay. As last time, I had a Room on the Zao side, but the impression was quite different depending on the floor. This time I was traveling with friends so it didn’t matter to me, but I think it would make sense to vary the price by floor selection. I chose the steak Plan for dinner, and after trying Yamagata beef and Yonezawa beef at various places during this trip, dinner here was the best. The meat was outstanding, and the teppan quality was excellent as well—it cooked beautifully and I was completely satisfied! The other dishes were also elaborate and seasonal, and I really enjoyed local Yamagata ingredients. The young lady who served us was very knowledgeable; hearing about the ingredients and local area made the meal even more enjoyable. Breakfast was an exceptionally large-scale buffet (lol). I’d be happy if towels were provided in the large public bath, and it would be even more comfortable if the morning drink service were available as well. Above all, everyone at the Hotel was cheerful and kind—this is an Accommodation I truly want to return to. Thank you for a wonderful holiday.

The service and the room were good, but

I had heard this Hotel was highly regarded, so I stayed with high expectations. The guest room on the 8th floor with a great view and the service from each staff member were indeed excellent, but the bath and Onsen were disappointing. There was added water, heating, circulation filtration, and disinfection—common in large public baths at Hotels—so I couldn’t really enjoy the Onsen. In particular, the stone open-air bath on the 8th floor was far too small, and it was also lukewarm. I felt that with more careful temperature control and management, it might have been possible to enjoy the Onsen more.

Looking back now, what comes to mind is...

The day before, the weather was rough due to a typhoon, so we were a little worried, but Yamagata welcomed us with beautiful weather—an auspicious start. It was our first time in Yamagata and our first Onsen in a while, so we were excited. After check-in, we were shown to our Room. The staff’s hospitality left a strong impression, and my husband and I laughed, saying it really felt like a lovely Accommodation as we headed to the large public bath. From there, we had a wonderful view of the Zao mountain range, and we took our time enjoying the moments before sunset. The quality of the water was excellent, and we could truly relax in both the Kamakura sauna and the safflower bath. The only slight disappointment was that once you’re soaking in the open-air bath, you can’t see the mountains—but instead we enjoyed the scenery from our Room! And when it comes to Yamagata—cherries, Yamagata beef, Tsuyahime rice, sake—and lately even wine is famous too—there are so many delicious things that we were really looking forward to dinner. We chose sukiyaki, and it was truly amazing!! Their original sesame-miso sauce was so addictive that we bought some at the shop to take home. We started with sake as usual, but soon found ourselves wanting wine as well and ordered right away. What surprised us most was how perfectly wild mountain vegetables paired with Yamagata white wine!! It felt like an experience you could only have here. (When I mentioned this to a staff member and they agreed—“Absolutely!”—it made me so happy.) Also adorable: there were cute cherries on the pickles plate—“Wait… what?”—and they added another delightful flavor. From start to finish—even down to the final pudding—the heartfelt dishes paired with great sake and wine made it an unforgettable night. The next morning on our way back to the large public bath: huh? Was incense being gently burned in the hallway? And when we first entered our Room yesterday after being shown in, there was also that wonderful scent of tatami mats. We didn’t see any staff at that moment, yet their hospitality came through clearly—it warmed my heart. Breakfast had so many Yamagata specialties—including imoni—that I couldn’t decide what to choose. A staff member told us, “It’s delicious if you pour Yamagata dashi over Tsuyahime,” and they were absolutely right. Lastly, every interaction with each staff member struck just the right balance of professionalism with kindness and friendliness—I left feeling completely fulfilled. Thank you very much.

    The building is old,...

The building is old, but the Room has been renovated and was very comfortable. The staff were appropriately available, and their subtle attentiveness left a strong impression. The meals were delicious, and although the alcohol selection was limited, it was free, so there were no complaints. The bath was a light Onsen that wasn’t quite to my taste, but with the great views it was still very relaxing.

    Wonderful Ryokan

This was my first stay, and it was an outstanding Ryokan that made me want to come back again. Not only was the Room wonderful, but the consistently excellent Tsuyahime rice as well!! The meals were delicious, we could relax in a private dining room, and chatting with the staff member in charge was enjoyable. The Onsen was also very relaxing—overall, we were completely satisfied. Rather than “this one thing is amazing,” my impression is simply that everything was excellent. The younger staff always greeted us with smiles, handled unexpected requests smoothly, and their training is clearly superb. We had a great time right up until checkout and leaving the Ryokan.

    Koyo, Kaminoyama

Unfortunately, it rained, but we were still able to enjoy the open-air bath at sunrise without any issues. The facilities are old overall, but the renovations seem to be progressing well. We also enjoyed a delicious meal in a private dining room. The staff’s service was very attentive. One thing that concerned me was that the main contact number was a 0570 number.

    The staff’s service ...

The staff’s service and attentiveness were outstanding, and they showed great care when my grandchild wasn’t feeling well. Breakfast, with a wide variety of Yamagata specialties, was very satisfying, and the welcome tea and sweets on arrival were delicious. The Room facilities were quite old, but everything was clean. It was disappointing that the futon mattress was thin and made my body ache, but the pillow selection service was nice.

    Your First Time in Yamagata

On my first trip to Yamagata, I stayed at a well-established, renowned Ryokan. The service, cuisine, and guest room were all excellent, and I was very satisfied. The Onsen water quality wasn’t quite to my liking, but as a Ryokan to relax and recover from travel fatigue, it was outstanding.

    It was a large, old-...

It was a large, old-fashioned Ryokan. Even after reading various Reviews before visiting, I was very disappointed that the dinner’s taste and quality, as well as the service, felt like an izakaya. After check-in, we were taken straight to an amenity buffet area and had to collect the amenities ourselves before going to our Room. Despite having registered guest details in advance, it felt like a cheap Business Hotel, and I was very surprised to see this system at a Ryokan.

    The Room is excellent.

The Room was excellent, but the meals were average. Their signature “Saisho no Yui” course had portions that were too large, and by the final meat dish I was already full. The glutinous rice mixed rice is also one of their specialties, but since I enjoy drinking alcohol, I don’t really like eating rice as if it were a dish midway through the meal—though the broth was delicious.

    A consistently reliable accommodation

We stay here every year to coincide with the Wine Bar event. Rather than any one standout feature, the clean facilities, the staff’s hospitality, and the bath with a great view make it a place where we can stay with peace of mind. This year we stayed on a breakfast-only Plan. As always, it was a reliably good Accommodation. We look forward to staying again next year.
