    Professional hospitality service

As you’d expect from a long-established Ryokan, all the staff—both younger and more experienced—provided truly professional service. Housekeeping and Facility maintenance throughout the building were excellent. The large public bath had everything you could want: an open-air bath, an indoor bath, a sauna, and a cold plunge. The yuzu tea service after bathing and the free massage chairs were also a nice touch. If I have the chance to visit again, I’ll choose Jyoseikan without hesitation. I would also recommend it to everyone.

Both the meals and the bath were excellent.

Thank you for taking care of us during our summer trip to Shikoku. Before dinner, we were able to watch a live demonstration of straw-seared bonito, and it was truly delicious. The bath was also spacious and very relaxing. We didn’t know until we arrived, but this is a historic and prestigious Accommodation, and every staff member who assisted us was courteous and attentive. We booked the guided walking stay Plan, and the next day we visited ponds associated with Ryoma Sakamoto while walking. The explanations were thorough, making it a truly memorable experience.

    It was very comfortable.

We had a very comfortable stay, including the Room, meals (featuring ingredients from Kochi), and the large public bath. The sweet yuzu tea in the post-bath lounge was especially delicious. (It would be even better if it were refilled a bit more often.) Also, when we asked where we could use handheld fireworks, the front desk staff immediately told us that it would be possible near Lawson in Josei Park, about a 5–10 minute walk from the Accommodation (on the concrete-paved area). This was extremely helpful, and our child was able to enjoy fireworks. (We asked at other hotels as well, but couldn’t find out where it was allowed.) Just one point: our child’s dinner was prepared as Western-style, although it seems Japanese-style could also be chosen. If it is selectable, we would appreciate being asked in advance (ideally at the time of Reservation). Since our child prefers Japanese food, we shared from our meal instead. (At check-in, we were told it had already been prepared and changing it would require remaking it with an additional charge.) Overall, we had a very comfortable stay and would definitely like to use this Accommodation again on our next visit to Kochi. (A small detail: the in-room refrigerator had a freezer function, which really helped us refreeze ice packs.)

I’d love to enjoy dinner next time!

Reserved on the day and stayed overnight. It’s said to be a historic old Ryokan, but the Room was very clean. The property was also well cleaned and well maintained throughout. I only had breakfast; there weren’t many dishes, but everything was delicious overall. The service was excellent as well. Next time, I’d like to make a Reservation in advance and try the seared bonito! I’ll definitely stay again.

    The food is outstanding.

The food was absolutely delicious. The staff provided excellent service and explained each dish so well that we were completely satisfied until the very end. It changed my whole idea of seared bonito. When staying in Kochi again, I would love to return.

    Calm Japanese-Style Room

It was a Room-assigned Plan. A Japanese-style room with a step-up entryway. The bath and toilet were separate. Staff came to lay out the futon. No shortage of amenities; a hair dryer was provided in the room. Room wear included a yukata and haori. Tea, coffee, an electric kettle, and cups were all provided. The breakfast buffet was delicious—so much I couldn’t finish it, and I was very satisfied! Even my husband, who is a bit of a neat freak, was very satisfied. Thank you very much.

    Hmm, they say it’s a long-established place, but…

Although it is described as a long-established Ryokan, several things felt off. 1. Meals were already set out from the start, and everything was cold except for items heated at the table with solid fuel. Even the rice and miso soup were brought out at the beginning in a cold state. This did not feel like dining at a long-established Ryokan, and the taste was mediocre. Staff only appeared briefly at first and otherwise did not come unless we ordered drinks via the tablet, which felt strange. Breakfast also had limited variety and nothing particularly appealing. 2. I stayed in a Room said to have been recently renovated, but the bathtub in the bathroom looked moldy and was unpleasant. The window side also lacked soundproofing and blackout performance, and the futon felt thin and cheap (probably). On the other hand, items like bowls and teapots were stylish. 3. There were quite a few staff around reception, and they were generally pleasant, which made the gap with what’s described above even more noticeable. 4. If operations continue as they are now, they should stop presenting themselves as a long-established Ryokan.

    Stay at Jouseikan.

My husband and I stayed here together. We were very satisfied and felt the attentive hospitality in every detail. There was a bag for wet towels in the bathroom, and several plastic bags for changing clothes were also provided in the Room. When we told the front desk that we wanted to visit Hirome Market, they kindly explained the map and directions, which was very helpful. We would definitely stay here again when we visit Kochi.

    Although it was fair...

Although it was fairly inexpensive, we even got to watch the bonito being seared over straw, and the meals were so lavish we couldn’t eat another bite. Despite feeling like a local city Hotel where groups such as the Chamber of Commerce might gather, it also had an open-air bath, which was very nice.

We stayed here on a trip with my child and mother.

We had heard this was a long-established Ryokan, but it didn’t feel outdated at all and was very clean. All of the staff were kind, which made our stay wonderful. Since meals were served in our Room, our child could relax comfortably. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. The bath was also spacious and great. We would love to stay here again when we visit Kochi.

    Wonderful Accommodation

It was a large, elegant Ryokan, and we truly appreciated that the proprietress personally served us tea and even carried our luggage for us. Every time we met the staff, they greeted us with smiles, which made a wonderful impression. The room was clean, and the amenities were well stocked. The bath was very relaxing as well. Breakfast was delicious, and I ended up eating too much first thing in the morning. Next time, I’d like to include dinner in the Plan and relax at a leisurely pace. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us during our stay. Thanks to you, it became a memorable girls’ trip.

    The front desk staff...

The front desk staff and the parking staff were truly wonderful. However, even though I had arranged a late check-out, someone opened my Room, rang the doorbell, and ignored me even when I responded. It felt like there was no coordination with housekeeping. While the various services were good, I checked out feeling genuinely upset.

You are carrying on a wonderful tradition.

It felt like my first stay at a Ryokan in a long time. Thank you for your attention to every detail, and I truly enjoyed the delicious Tosa cuisine. I hope you will continue to preserve and carry on the traditions of Ryokan hospitality. Thank you very much.

    The Doobie Brothers

    Exceeds expectations. Quiet, thoughtful hospitality.

We stayed for 2 nights on a breakfast-included limited Plan. We felt it was a wonderful Accommodation. Both the building and our Room were very well maintained, and we could sense how the owners and staff cherish and carry on this place with care. Staying for a Multiple Night Stay let us notice things we might not have otherwise. We were happy that the large public bath was available from 12:00 p.m. At that time, only face towels were in the changing area (although we were informed that both bath towels and face towels would be provided), so we wondered if it was due to day-use guests. However, when we returned after bathing, a bath towel had been placed in our changing basket. Also, when it came time to lay out the futon bedding, it seemed they kindly chose a moment when we were out of the Room rather than doing so at their convenience. This kind of discreet, attentive hospitality is something you rarely encounter at large Ryokan—especially on a limited Plan. One small disappointment was that while the breakfast venue is spacious, it felt somewhat empty and plain; it gave a slightly stark impression for enjoying such carefully prepared food. That said, breakfast featured many varieties of thoughtfully cooked local side dishes, and everything was delicious. We also noticed some wear and stains on the corridor carpet on the large public bath floor, though given the humidity in that area it may be unavoidable. We could feel this long-established Ryokan’s pride in every detail. Kochi City is great for dining out, but next time we would like to visit as a couple at a more relaxed pace and make an opportunity to enjoy dinner here as well. Thank you very much.

A noticeable gap between the photos and reality, and tasteless footwear.

The Room photos looked wonderful, so I made a Reservation, but the reality was very different and extremely disappointing. It is said to be a long-established Hotel, and while the Room has been renovated, the bathtub felt like something from an old-fashioned love hotel era—very inconvenient to use. There was also a separate shower booth, but water leaked from the glass door and flooded the bathroom and sink area. Although it is described as a prestigious Hotel where even the Emperor has stayed, the staff’s shoes were loud and unpleasant with every step. The worn-down heels of their pumps made me question the sense of dignity. If they are responsible for guests’ safety and security, I would like them to wear footwear that allows them to guide guests quickly in case of an emergency or disaster at any time. Staff footwear also affects overall satisfaction.

I stayed here with my mother in her 80s. We chose the carefully selected gourmet in-Room dining, and were able to relax without worrying about time. Both the Room and the bath were well maintained, and all of the staff provided warm, heartfelt service. I would love to stay again.

Experience the exceptional hospitality of a long-established Ryokan and savor Kochi’s cuisine to the fullest!

On my first trip to Kochi, I debated between dining out while staying at a Hotel or choosing this Ryokan, and it was absolutely the right decision. Upon arrival, I pulled into the spacious drop-off area, and valet staff handled the tower parking for us. Because Katsurahama was crowded, we didn’t arrive until close to 6:00 pm. We had hoped for a later dinner at 7:00 pm, but it was already fully booked; they kindly made a special arrangement for us at 7:30 pm. Dinner featured Kochi specialties such as bonito, Otome Tai (Kochi’s branded sea bream), dorome (raw whitebait), moray eel, and whale. The bonito—straw-grilled and served with plenty of condiments and ponzu—was delicious with no fishy smell at all. The recommended sake, Senchu Hassaku, paired perfectly with the meal and was excellent. The breakfast buffet also had fun local items like cute “hat bread” and Riple (a lactic acid drink), which we really enjoyed. I was traveling with someone who uses a wheelchair, and staff members checked in on us in many places and offered assistance whenever needed. Thank you very much for your wonderful hospitality.

    The meals were delicious.

At the entrance to the dining venue, they performed a live straw-searing demonstration of bonito (tataki) right in front of us. It was then served at our table, and it was exceptionally delicious.

    Room type assigned on arrival

I made a Reservation for an assigned Room. Based on the Reviews saying it was “better than the price,” I had some expectations, but honestly, the Room was small for a family of four. We have two sons who are university students and quite big, so it felt cramped even when sleeping. In hindsight, we probably should have chosen a slightly more expensive Room. Breakfast was served in a venue that felt like something from a school trip. It was nice that there was a ReFa shower head and hair dryer.

    After all, Josai-kan

I stayed here for the first time in 12 years, and it was great. You can feel the staff’s attentive care in many situations. It’s about a 15–20 minute walk from the Hirome Market area, which is a perfect distance. Since my Plan did not include dinner, I had to look for a place to eat, but many restaurants are closed on Sunday nights, so be careful. Breakfast offered a wide variety of options and was very good.

The Onsen was great, but the Room was disappointing.

The sauna, Onsen, and open-air bath were very relaxing. Breakfast was also delicious. However, the Room was not good. We were on the 5th floor, but the microphone sound from the banquet hall below came through loudly and was terrible. Because it was a microphone, the noise reverberated in my head and continued until after 9:00 p.m. When I asked the front desk how long the banquet would last, I was told it was already time to wrap up, but it continued afterward. There was no comment at check-out either. It’s disappointing for such a long-established Ryokan.

    It was amazing!

In the calm, well-appointed setting, I was soothed by the staff’s attentive hospitality. The cuisine featured an abundance of fresh seafood and mountain produce that truly felt like Kochi, and everything was delicious. The straw-grilled bonito demonstration was spectacular. I savored seared bonito tataki that’s hard to find elsewhere. The Room was also impeccably cleaned, making my stay very comfortable. Thank you for giving me such a special time. I would love to visit again.

The Best Things About a Long-Established Ryokan

We stayed as a family. Although it is located in the town center and the space is limited, everything was thoughtfully arranged, including the hospitality, and we truly enjoyed our stay. The meals were also absolutely delicious. Thank you very much.

They look down on first-time customers—an arrogant, take-it-or-leave-it attitude.

Recently, I traveled from Tokyo with my grandchild and their spouse, five of us in total. We ordered a cake to celebrate our grandchild’s first birthday, but it was forgotten, and we received no notice until after the meal ended. When we left the dining area to return to our Room, there was not even a send-off; we were left in a cold Room and were not even served tea. After we returned to our Room and some time had passed, a woman appeared carrying the cake uncovered. The meal also seemed like poorly prepared food that had been made well in advance. Although there was an apology, the proprietress—who should have been present—never appeared. The response was terrible and disappointing. I will stop here, but it was an awful Accommodation.

    If you’re going to Kochi

I wanted to visit Hirome Market, so I chose an Accommodation with highly rated breakfast—and it was absolutely the right choice. As one of Kochi’s leading Accommodations, the staff were outstanding from arrival to departure. I love traveling and go to many places, but even if the Facility and food are great, the staff are what truly make the difference. From being greeted when we arrived by rental car, guidance to our Room, the atmosphere and friendly attention at breakfast, explanations at the shop, a courteous checkout, and help with a commemorative photo at departure—everything was wonderfully hospitable. With inbound tourism booming and new Accommodations opening one after another everywhere, this stay made me feel that long-established Accommodations have a spirit cultivated over many years. The Tosa-focused breakfast selection, the Onsen and Kochi Castle view “beam,” the wide variety of souvenirs, and the amenities were all appealing as well. We fully enjoyed Hirome Market this time, so next time I’d like to stay with both dinner and breakfast included. Thank you very much for your hospitality.
