Auberge Homachi Mikuni Minato has been selected for “The 30 Collection,” which honors outstanding experiences across Japan, as part of the tourism awards “Forbes JAPAN Destinations of the Year 2026,” hosted by the global business magazine Forbes JAPAN. Mikuni Minato is a historic port town mentioned in the Shoku Nihongi in 778. During the Edo period, it flourished as a port of call for Kitamaebune trading ships traveling between Osaka and Hokkaido. Ten traditional townhouses scattered throughout the area have been renovated into nine buildings with 16 guest rooms and a restaurant. The name “Homachi” comes from “homachi” (waiting for favorable winds), a term that also evokes the “reward” enjoyed in the era of Kitamaebune ships. The architecture features local kagura-style construction and preserves Edo-period pillars, beams, and Shakudani stone. Dining is created by Michelin-starred French chef Ken Yoshino, who crafts an original menu showcasing Fukui’s world-class ingredients such as Echizen crab—also presented to the Imperial Household—rare seafood varieties, and Wakasa beef. This is a dispersed Hotel concept: guest rooms are spread across nine buildings with a separate restaurant building, allowing you to enjoy not only your stay and meals but also the history of the town itself. Tojinbo, one of Fukui’s top sightseeing destinations, is about a 10-minute drive away.
Enjoy a variety of Onsen experiences, including the largest garden open-air bath in the Hokuriku region. Mikuni Minato, once a thriving port for Kitamae ships, now blends the old with the new in its historic streets, evoking a sense of travel nostalgia. Neither urban nor rural, it exudes a unique cultural charm. The lifestyle culture inherited from ancestors and the tranquil lives of its people create a familiar yet nostalgic daily life in this port town, soothing the soul. Enjoy a stay that feels like living in this town, embracing your own unique experience.
