During the battles of Kawanakajima, Shibu Onsen served as a healing place for wounded soldiers. The first proprietor of Kokuya, Ichizaemon, originally ran a rice merchant business called Kokuya but later opened an inn for travelers. Since then, the Property has been cherished by guests, and the current proprietor is the 16th generation.

The building incorporates design elements of the original Matsusho-so while embracing traditional Sukiya architecture that harmonizes with nature.
