The private family bath was spacious and even had a waterfall feature, with the water at just the right temperature, so we could soak and relax. The atmosphere of the large public bath was also wonderful. The meals featured local ingredients, the portions were just right, and we were very satisfied! If you have mobility issues, going up and down to the first floor may be difficult, but it was a quiet place to spend time. We’d love to visit again after a hike in the mountains.

We stayed here on a trip with my parents-in-law. Our top priority was finding an Accommodation that could provide a low-sodium diet for my father-in-law, who became seriously ill last year. If possible, we also wanted to bring our dog along, since my parents-in-law adore him. Those two points are why we chose this Accommodation. From the parking guidance to our Room, we were warmly welcomed by staff with wonderful smiles. They also prepared chairs for my elderly father and even a chair for the in-room Onsen bath, so within 30 minutes of arriving at the Ryokan we already felt truly happy. What impressed us most was the meals. We were told they would “accommodate as much as possible,” and they really did—removing mentaiko, providing low-sodium soy sauce, and preparing dishes without salt or pepper. Thanks to all these adjustments, my father was able to finish almost everything. Since his illness, even eating out requires constant caution, so being able to enjoy a meal together at the Ryokan made us genuinely grateful. Some Reviews mentioned there were no dog amenities, but there were lint rollers and paw wipes available, so we had no issues. The usual overnight set you’d bring when leaving a dog at a pet hotel (pee pad tray, food bowl, water bowl) was enough. The in-room Onsen bath was very spacious, with perfect water temperature—I used it many times. All of the staff at this Accommodation were kind and pleasant throughout our stay; it was truly two days of happiness. We would love to visit again!

I was able to spend a truly luxurious time surrounded by peaceful, lush greenery. The hospitality was outstanding. The Room and the meals—everything exceeded my expectations. I’d love to visit again in a different season.

Everything about the Accommodation—the Room, the meals, and the staff—was excellent and very satisfying. In particular, I was soothed by the soft, gentle waters of Sujiyu Onsen. The bath in the Room was wonderful, and I was able to relax and take my time.

At IKYU, it was categorized as casual, but we enjoyed a luxurious Onsen experience that felt like staying at a private villa. The Room had a spacious washroom, and the toilet being separate was also convenient. The heater in the Room was turned on in advance, so we stayed warm without needing to use the air conditioner. Various thoughtful touches were noticeable throughout, and I heard that adjustments are made regularly. It had such a pleasant atmosphere that made us wish to stay longer. Here are some points of concern: It would be helpful if spare foot mats were provided for the private bath so they can be replaced after use. The abundance of wash towels was very convenient. A single fresh flower in the Room would add charm since there were flowers in the dining area. During meal service, providing more details about local ingredients or cooking methods would be appreciated by travelers—it may require extra effort from staff but makes for enjoyable conversations while savoring meals. Having a menu list would also enhance the dining experience further.

We stayed in a room with an open-air bath. The river view from the terrace was wonderful, and the room was spacious and relaxing. We were satisfied with both dinner and breakfast. We especially loved the handmade soba noodles—so much that we wanted seconds. My husband really liked the quality of the hot spring water and says he wants to come back. We would love to visit again.

With only eight rooms, each featuring a private open-air bath, this is a wonderfully quiet place to relax. The large public bath also has a spacious, impressive open-air bath! Depending on the time of day, it felt almost like having it all to ourselves, and we enjoyed it immensely. My skin stayed silky-smooth for days! The food was all delicious—especially the rice. Even I, having grown up in the countryside, was amazed at how good it was.

I stayed for two nights and had a very satisfying experience. I truly appreciated the thoughtful touches. For example, there were pajamas in addition to yukata, and since my room had a private open-air bath, a bathrobe was also provided. There were pitchers of both hot water and cold water, and complimentary Yebisu beer was chilled as well. I was also happy that the meals were thoughtfully changed from the first day’s menu. The seasoning suited my taste perfectly, and everything was delicious.

We stayed in a detached annex. The website said “indoor bath type,” and there were no photos, so we expected a regular bath—but it pleasantly exceeded our expectations. I really think you should post photos of that bath on the website! We originally planned to use the open-air bath, but ended up using the in-room bath the whole time (lol). Also, I believe it was fully booked, yet while we were in our Room we couldn’t hear any voices or noise from other guests at all. You can definitely feel its age, but as a Ryokan it had everything we were looking for. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and very generous in portion size. In particular, I made a Reservation for the half steamed chicken at dinner and it was quite an experience (in a good way). From the website photos I (wrongly) imagined a bone-in thigh, but it truly was “half.” It was very tasty, but you’ll need to save room in your stomach (especially women). When we asked, they even prepared the leftover steamed chicken so we could eat it in our Room! All staff members were wonderful—everyone was pleasant and welcoming. This quiet mountain Ryokan fulfilled everything I wanted: simply enjoying the Onsen and great food. Thank you very much.

We stayed at the property after climbing Mount Kuju. It was close to the Maki-no-toge trailhead, and after having tea at Shetani, we headed to Hanashinobu. We arrived at 4 PM and received a detailed explanation of the stay from the proprietress before heading straight to the onsen. The quality of the water was good, and there were various onsen options to choose from, which was very pleasant. Dinner was at 6 PM, which was perfect timing. The dinner was luxurious and very delicious. The room was warm, and we slept comfortably. Breakfast had a wide variety of dishes, and we were very satisfied. We would like to visit again. The owner and the proprietress were kind, and it was a warm property.

Bringing our two preschool grandchildren with us, choosing the detached Accommodation was the right decision. It was even the same Room my husband and I had stayed in before! It seemed to be their first time experiencing an open-air bath attached to the Room, and they were thrilled. Since it’s a standalone house, we could relax and enjoy ourselves without worrying about disturbing others even if they got a little noisy. Meals were served in a private dining room, and not only was the food excellent, but above all the service was outstanding. All of the staff were from overseas, but they welcomed us with wonderful smiles, making our meal truly pleasant.

Thank you for your warm hospitality—we headed home with gratitude. It’s a traditional Japanese house we’d love to stay at again.

This is my third visit. The meals are delicious, and since there is a bath in the Room, you can enjoy it 24 hours a day. The resident dog, Luna, is also very calm and adorable! It’s a Ryokan I truly love—quiet, relaxing, and an extraordinary space where you can unwind. There’s also a dog run where they can run around freely, so the dogs are thrilled! Next time, we’re talking about coming back for a Multiple Night Stay with my husband.

Dinner was very satisfying, featuring unique and delicious creative dishes and other tasty items made with local ingredients such as Oita beef. The bath was also wonderful, with a great view from the open-air bath that felt very relaxing.

Easily accessible from Makinoto Pass, this is a great hotel with both meals and an onsen. Dinner offers a wide variety of dishes that will leave you full. Breakfast is also delicious. The onsen includes family baths with open-air options as well as indoor baths, providing a wonderful experience. While the building and rooms may show some age, it is still a highly recommended accommodation.

I stayed with my parents upon their recommendation and was completely satisfied with everything. The delicious meals were more than enough, the building had a charming atmosphere, and the autumn leaves visible from the semi-open-air bath were breathtaking. It reminded me of my grandmother and brought a sense of warmth and relaxation. It was such a wonderful accommodation that I would love to stay again.

I used it for a trip with him at the beginning of the year. It was a whole building rental, and there was a bath in the room, so we could relax as much as we wanted without worrying about the surroundings. Dinner was a special New Year's menu with fish and meat, and it was very satisfying. Above all, the rice cooked in a personal earthenware pot for breakfast was very delicious, and he was very pleased. Since it was New Year's, we were also given sake as a service on our way back. Its greatest value lies in its intentionally limited number of rooms. Far removed from the bustle of a large Ryokan, it offers complete privacy—paired with perfectly judged hospitality that is attentive without ever feeling intrusive. From the moment you arrive, you can feel everyday life quietly fade away. The open-air bath is simply unforgettable. In crisp, unobstructed air, soaking in superb free-flowing Onsen while watching the starry sky shift moment by moment becomes more than a bath—it’s an indulgent sense of oneness with nature. For an Accommodation with such a private atmosphere, the generous space throughout is exceptional and especially appealing to wellness-minded travelers. As I was visiting after business and didn’t want to inconvenience the owner couple, I booked a stay with breakfast only—but each dish at breakfast told its own story. Every bite was spot-on and far beyond expectations. I regretted not ordering dinner so much that I could only think afterward: “Why didn’t I?” I also learned that at nearby Komatsu Jigoku—reopened for sightseeing after restoration completed in summer 2025—you can make Onsen eggs yourself. They kindly sold me eggs upon request and graciously accommodated my last-minute favor. I visited in early summer, but reaching Kokonoe’s mountains when they are covered in snow will likely require some preparation. Even so, that challenge only adds to the thrill of heading into a hidden retreat. Nature, renowned hot springs, and outstanding cuisine—Yamatsubaki brings them together in near-perfect balance. It isn’t just somewhere to stay; it’s a destination in itself—a truly one-of-a-kind Accommodation worth traveling for.

We were very satisfied. The meals were perfect for us in our 50s—great flavor, a good variety of dishes, and more than enough quantity. The seasonal ingredients and colorful presentation made dinner truly enjoyable. It felt different (in a good way) from accommodations that host large tour groups—this place had a charming, nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere. The hot spring can be enjoyed at your leisure as much as you like, and it was especially recommended for those with physical fatigue from standing work or other manual labor; my legs felt refreshed and light afterward. Not recommended for guests who want to stay up late making noise or who are very sensitive to sounds. Recommended for tired travelers who want to relax and enjoy an escape from everyday life at a slow pace. Another place we’d love to return to has been added to our list.

The Accommodation buildings are scattered across a spacious property, offering a relaxing escape from the bustle of the city. But the greatest highlight here is the wonderful dinner. The menu is thoughtfully crafted, with many unique and unusual dishes. The chef’s dedication really shows in the food, and I was very satisfied. The Onsen is also excellent, with free-flowing natural hot spring water. I didn’t know there was such a great place in Kokonoe.
