This was my second stay. Last time, I stayed during a snowy season, so this time I was able to relax until dinner and fully enjoy the sight of green trees swaying and the gentle calls of evening cicadas from my clean, refined Room. The meals here are delicious both in the morning and in the evening, with plenty of vegetables. Of course, the fish and meat were also excellent—everything was flawless. Above all, the staff’s smiles were wonderful, and their service was attentive and professional, which made me feel truly happy. I will definitely come back to stay again when I have time. While browsing Reviews for an Accommodation where we could stay with our pet, natural Onsen, and dining options, we found Takakatsu and decided to stay there. The hospitality, guest room, water quality, cuisine, and the Onsen town—all were more than satisfying. However, while the amount of food was sufficient for us as a couple, it might feel a bit small for younger guests. We will be back again.

We stayed in a detached annex. The website said “indoor bath type,” and there were no photos, so we expected a regular bath—but it pleasantly exceeded our expectations. I really think you should post photos of that bath on the website! We originally planned to use the open-air bath, but ended up using the in-room bath the whole time (lol). Also, I believe it was fully booked, yet while we were in our Room we couldn’t hear any voices or noise from other guests at all. You can definitely feel its age, but as a Ryokan it had everything we were looking for. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and very generous in portion size. In particular, I made a Reservation for the half steamed chicken at dinner and it was quite an experience (in a good way). From the website photos I (wrongly) imagined a bone-in thigh, but it truly was “half.” It was very tasty, but you’ll need to save room in your stomach (especially women). When we asked, they even prepared the leftover steamed chicken so we could eat it in our Room! All staff members were wonderful—everyone was pleasant and welcoming. This quiet mountain Ryokan fulfilled everything I wanted: simply enjoying the Onsen and great food. Thank you very much.

My first solo trip after turning 50, to Yufuin—a place I had always wanted to visit. Among the many Onsen Ryokans, I chose Hotaru for its room with an open-air bath. Traveling by plane and bus, I was grateful for the Shuttle Service from the station. The detached room was lovely; though it rained, the rock bath had a partially covered area, allowing me to soak without getting wet while enjoying the raindrops falling into the bath—a truly serene experience. The room was clean and comfortable, perfect even for a solo traveler like me. The Onsen water was incredibly smooth—unlike anything I've experienced before—and felt amazing on my skin. The view was breathtaking as well. In the morning, as it cleared up, I watched Mount Yufu's mist and clouds shift by the minute, revealing various beautiful faces of the mountain—I didn’t want to leave! The meals were made with local Oita ingredients and were absolutely delicious; I left feeling completely satisfied. If I visit this area again, I'd love to stay in the same room at Hotaru once more!
