A relaxing Property in Shuzenji featuring a magnificent large garden with vibrant greenery and autumn foliage.

While looking for a place to stay in the Izu area, we happened to learn that this property is used as a filming location for one of my husband’s favorite TV dramas, so we decided to book. It was our first time in Shuzenji Onsen. Because the drama connection was highlighted so prominently, I wondered if it might be a bit of a “fan” kind of inn—but once we arrived, we found thoughtful hospitality throughout. Not only were the facilities and spaces wonderful, but the service and attention from the staff also made us feel completely at ease. What impressed me most was the careful consideration you can sense everywhere on the property. Little things I often think “I wish other ryokan or hotels did this” were quietly taken care of—and beyond that, there were many ideas that made me realize, “Oh, this is how it could be even more comfortable,” even for things I’d never considered inconvenient before. Nothing felt over-the-top, but every detail seemed designed with guests’ movements and feelings in mind. I think that accumulation of small touches is what creates such an overall sense of comfort. The amenities and in-room items also felt carefully selected one by one—it truly came across that they had thought through how guests could spend their time pleasantly. The service left a strong impression as well. The staff member who looked after us was relatively young—polite yet pleasantly friendly and approachable—and our conversations were enjoyable, which helped us relax naturally. We also felt warmth from all the other staff members: a genuine desire for guests to have a comfortable stay. For us, their heartfelt hospitality—without being overly formal—was just right. The meals were excellent too. The presentation and tableware had a playful touch, and there were little surprises in the combinations of ingredients and how dishes were served—so we stayed excited about what would come next all the way through. Even breakfast clearly wasn’t an afterthought; it was a deeply satisfying stay. Since it was just before a holiday weekend, we almost had the large public bath to ourselves and could enjoy the hot springs at leisure. The garden was beautiful as well—I can imagine reservations becoming very competitive during autumn foliage season. We usually visit Hakone, but extending our trip by about another hour made it possible to enjoy such an indulgent experience at far more accessible prices than Hakone—and that really impressed us. It’s a wonderful place where we’d love to return in another season.

Thank you for hosting us during the Obon holiday period in 2026. - Since the Accommodation is a member of the onsen association, you can use the public bath (Hakoyu) about a 2–3 minute walk away for half price (350 yen). If you like public baths, you may feel there’s no need for an in-house bath. There is also a shared shower at the Accommodation (Reservation required at the front desk). - There is paid parking about a 5-minute walk away for 500 yen per night. Even if you stay at a large Hotel, it’s common to have parking that’s a similar walking distance, so I didn’t find it inconvenient that this Accommodation doesn’t have on-site parking. It was 500 yen per day, and the parking attendant told me it’s the same price through the next morning after your stay, which I appreciated. - The interior seems to have been renovated in recent years—simple, clean, and well kept. Compared with what I expected from the name “shukubo” and the price, it was very comfortable and I’d like to stay again. - The second-floor triple Room had a nice view of the park and Shuzenji Temple from the window, with good airflow as well. - It’s best to pack light; the stairs are steep and narrow. - Soundproofing is limited. Being considerate of noise feels important to avoid issues. It may not suit guests who want to be lively in their Room late into the night. At normal hours with normal conversation volume, I wasn’t particularly bothered by voices from neighboring Rooms. I hope this helps.
