The Property is situated on the grounds where the Choshu domain school "Meirinkan" once stood, where Yoshida Shoin served as an instructor and gave lectures. The Horiuchi area, where the Property is located, is designated as a "Traditional Buildings Preservation District," preserving remnants of the old castle town to this day.
