This was our first stay with two dogs, and we made a Reservation because we wanted to stay somewhere that had an Onsen in the Room for guests traveling with dogs. What was good - A private in-room bath with free-flowing natural hot spring water that allows dogs is rare, so it felt very special. - We couldn’t use it due to rain, but there was an unexpected dog run. - Since it’s a standalone cottage, we could relax comfortably on our own. - The Room is compact but has everything you need. What was disappointing - When you get into the Onsen tub all at once, the drainage can’t keep up, so we were told to scoop water out with a wash basin before bathing... Even for me (a woman), I could only get halfway in and then wait... ease in slowly... and it took quite a long time before I could actually bathe. It’s supposed to be a relaxing Onsen, but having to be so careful made it tiring. I realized the next morning that draining from the bathtub stopper makes everything run smoothly! (This is clearly a Facility issue, so if they had explained this much at check-in—instead of just saying “use a wash basin”—we could have enjoyed the Onsen far more.) - This is on us for not checking carefully enough, but both the Accommodation website and the Yahoo! Reservation page show photos of dogs on the bed. We assumed beds were allowed, but the consent form said they are not. If beds aren’t allowed for dogs, I wish they wouldn’t post photos that can be misleading. In the end, when it was time to sleep we went back to our car and slept as usual in our car-camping style... (tears) - Even though pricing changes depending on dog size, only small-dog amenities are provided. The toilet tray seemed regular size? (on the small side), and there were two very small bowls. We have a medium-sized dog as well, so we used the toilet tray and dishes we brought ourselves. If your dog normally uses wide-size pads/trays, bringing your own is essential. This time we were able to stay at a good price thanks to Niigata GOTO Travel discounts, but at regular prices... there are other places I’d choose instead. The water quality is excellent since it’s Akakura Onsen as expected—but between how closed-off it felt and the drainage issue... hmm.

It seemed they were in a pre-opening phase, and while the other staff didn’t yet seem fully up to speed with the experienced manager, it was clear everyone was working very hard. Since it has been renovated, everything is naturally clean, but my companion said the Room refrigerator was a little dirty. Each Room has its own Onsen bath, and there is no large public bath. In the Room with a kitchen, the bath is free-flowing from the source and had plenty of mineral deposits. Perhaps because of cleaning related to that, the tub wasn’t filled at check-in, so even though we had an early check-in Plan, we couldn’t use the bath for a little over an hour after arrival, which was disappointing. Also, due to the water quality we were told to keep the bathroom window open at all times. Although there was a lock on the bathroom side, there was no lock that could be secured from inside the Room side. Because of how it was built (it could be entered from outside), I felt uneasy about security when sleeping at night. There is a keyhole on the Room side as well, so I think it would be good if that key were kept in the Room. Also, when I went to where the microwave is located, there was a coffee machine and juice available. However, since this wasn’t explained to us, I hesitated about whether it was okay to drink them. It would have been better if this had been explained at check-in. It seems they plan to start selling Plans with breakfast included in the future and are still working through trial and error—best of luck.
