Alongside Shirakami-Sanchi and Oku-Kurobe, Oku-Tadami and Oku-Oze are among Japan’s most remote hidden regions. The place name “Oze” is said to derive from Oze Saburo, who is believed to have reached this land after being exiled from the capital during the Heian period. Since then, these mountains have been spoken of as a sacred realm where the gods dwell.Echigo-Komagatake—one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains—and Nakanodake and Arasawadake—both among the 200 Famous Mountains—tower before you. Along the Kitanomata River, you can even spot large char with the naked eye, in scenery reminiscent of Kamikochi. This is Oku-Tadami / Ginzan-daira: one of Japan’s great wildernesses, one of its heaviest snowfall areas, a place frequented by writer Takeshi Kaiko, and a region where vast nature remains on a scale comparable to Kurobe–Tateyama.Oze Jutto offers six villa suites in hand-cut log house cabins, plus four standard rooms on the second floor of the restaurant building. For dinner, we serve a course meal created from that day’s ingredients. In winter, snowfall exceeds seven meters; in spring, meltwater nourishes the forest; in summer, life overflows; and in autumn, abundance fills these deep mountains.Wild mountain vegetables, mushrooms, game meat—and crystal-clear water… all are gifts from an ecosystem that has endured since ancient times. At our restaurant “Seizan Ryokusui,” we aim to express this primeval landscape. It is never extravagant cuisine—but it is not merely a meal to fill your stomach either.A journey to taste myth and climate-bound memory: that is “Seizan Ryokusui” primeval cuisine.
