The Property features three distinct buildings: the "Main Building," known as the oldest Onsen inn architecture in Japan, where the culture of Onsen therapy still thrives; the "Sansou," designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan for its excellent design and architectural techniques in the Momoyama style; and the "Kashoutei," located at the highest point in Shima Onsen, surrounded by the tranquility of ancient pine trees. Opened in November 2024, "Kanouya Shima Onsen" offers all rooms with private open-air Onsen baths featuring natural hot spring water. Situated along the clear Shimagawa River, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Shima's nature through large windows and from the baths. We cherish a quietly flowing sense of time, focusing on stays for two, such as couples and partners. From the guest rooms and baths, you can hear the gentle murmur of the river and relax away from everyday life. Meals are prepared entirely by hand, featuring ingredients mainly from Gunma Prefecture. There is no large public bath; instead, you may use our three private reservable baths free of charge. Each bath is supplied with “Gomusō-no-Yu,” the original hot spring source of Shima Onsen.

Our large public bath features free-flowing natural hot spring water from the source and is located in Sarugakyo Onsen. Ayameya Ryokan, nestled in Shima Onsen, is a quiet hot-spring destination surrounded by nature where you can enjoy the scenery of all four seasons. Waterfalls and lakes are scattered throughout the area, making it perfect for leisurely walks. You can also enjoy playing in the clear waters of the Shima River. Our five 10-tatami Japanese-style rooms offer peaceful, relaxing spaces with seasonal mountain views from the windows. Shima Onsen is designated as a National Health Hot Spring and is known for its gentle waters, making it safe and comfortable even for small children and pregnant guests. The property located by the shores of Akaya Lake features seven non-smoking rooms, all with lake views, and boasts the gentle Sarugakyo Onsen flowing directly from the source. We take pride in our Onsen, a variety of baths, and handmade cuisine crafted without relying on pre-made products (limited to a set number per day). Guests can enjoy five private baths at no additional charge. All baths feature free-flowing Onsen water. You are welcome to use the hinoki wood family bath or the stone family bath freely. The natural Onsen water is colorless, odorless, and sourced directly from our private spring on-site, flowing continuously (free-flowing source). Notably, Gennoyu and Koshiburo Ichinoyu are supplied directly through natural gravity as they are located lower than the spring source. Please note that as this is a wooden building, there is no elevator; guests will need to use stairs. Meals are served in the dining area. For stays of three nights or more, meals from the third night onward will repeat the menu from the first and second nights. We regret that we cannot accommodate changes to meal content (including allergies or preferences). All rooms and indoor areas are non-smoking, including electronic cigarettes.
