The former Aburaya, which served as a secondary inn in Oiwake-juku on the Nakasendo in Karuizawa, was relocated to its current location in 1938. This Ryokan has been the setting for many literary works, as it was favored by writers and intellectuals such as Tatsuo Hori, Michizo Tachihara, and Shuichi Kato for their writing retreats. In 2012, the building of the former Aburaya Ryokan was restored and reborn as "Aburaya," a place dedicated to "Books and Art Projects." The second floor of the main building now serves as a Property with No Meals Included.
