Established in 1923. A traditional Japanese Ryokan offering luxurious experiences with high-quality hot springs and authentic Kaiseki cuisine.

Thank you for taking care of us again in a Room with an open-air bath. The Room has beds, and at the back there is a spacious armchair where you can sit and relax while looking out at the garden. I was able to unwind there, enjoying tea and reading quietly. With the beds, it was also easy to lie down and rest right away, which gave me a reassuring sense of comfort. Last time we stayed over New Year’s with family, but this time it was wonderful to enjoy the garden as it shifted from summer into autumn while soaking in the open-air bath in the Room. Sanraku is also well known for its baths; in particular, the open-air baths are highly recommended, as you can feel even the natural breeze and soak amid beautiful mountain scenery. As for the cuisine, there has been a change of head chef, bringing a fresh new approach. While maintaining Sanraku’s original attentive Japanese cuisine that highlights seasonal ingredients, I could sense new ideas being introduced. Dishes were served freshly prepared, and it felt clear that great care is taken so guests never grow tired of what is offered. Our attendant provided detailed explanations of each dish and showed wonderful hospitality. An attendant who had looked after us previously also took the time to speak with us. The front desk and welcoming staff remembered our previous stay as well, making this an Onsen Ryokan where you can truly relax with peace of mind. I sincerely hope that such a hospitable Japanese Ryokan will continue its history for many years to come. As an IKYU Diamond member benefit, we received half a bottle of wine as well as shopping vouchers—great value tickets that could be used both for drinks at meals and for souvenirs. This is a Ryokan I would love to visit again.

An outdoor Hotel in nature, featuring a private open-air bath and private sauna to warm up and unwind.

We stayed for two nights. We arrived on the day a typhoon hit, and after struggling to chop firewood it burned out in no time. Feeling discouraged, we headed for the open-air bath, but a sudden downpour intensified and something fell from the chestnut tree overhead, brushing my shoulder—so I hurried out of the tub. Then I stepped barefoot on a spiky chestnut burr and made my way back to the cabin with rain- and tears-blurred vision. Still, thanks to the clean, wonderfully fluffy bed, I was able to relax. The next morning, freshly ground and brewed coffee—made while my left forearm flexors trembled from all that wood-chopping—was exceptional. On our final morning after the typhoon had passed, we woke up early and had breakfast outside. No need to despair over a soaking-wet fire pit: a cassette gas stove is provided. The salt and pepper provided were so delicious that we put them on everything. Even an ordinary fried egg bought at a supermarket in Tokyo tasted as if it had been reborn as a “Nasu Highlands sunny-side egg” with just those seasonings. Reading this back, it sounds like only slightly questionable memories remain—but this is a wonderful Facility that I can highly recommend even for outdoor beginners like me. If it’s this fun even during a typhoon, I’m sure it would be amazing in good weather, so I’d love to return if I get the chance. *If you’re visiting: please watch out for the chestnut tree above the Onsen and your footing.*
