The blessings of Zao, all to yourself. Handmade kaiseki cuisine, Onsen with a large bath made of granite and cypress, and a free private bath.

We stayed at Tamaya Ryokan during Silver Week, and the rates were still very reasonable. Near the front desk there is a large public bath, and a little farther away there is a private bath available 24 hours a day. Both were on the hotter side with a slight iron scent, had plenty of water flowing directly from the source, and left our skin feeling smooth afterward—wonderful hot springs. The meals were all handmade with an impressive number of dishes. Everything was delicious. In particular, I tried tsukudani made with “inago” (grasshoppers?) for the first time in my life—its slightly bitter flavor and texture were quite unique… The croissants we bought as souvenirs were also lightly sweet and wonderfully flaky—highly recommended. After check-in we also received bathing tickets for “Kami-no-Yu / Kotobuki-no-Yu,” so we took a short walk to Kami-no-Yu about two minutes from the ryokan. There was even a footbath outside, and it really captured the atmosphere of this hot spring town. The next day after breakfast, we took another casual stroll in our yukata and stopped by a café called Enso; both the coffee and gateau chocolat were exceptional. We relaxed from check-in at 3:00 PM until check-out at 10:00 AM at Tamaya Ryokan. This was our first visit to Togatta Onsen, and we loved its calm, welcoming vibe—it’s become one of our favorite places. It’s about a five-hour drive from home for us, but we definitely want to come again.

Indulge in the luxury of hot water and flavors with high-quality Onsen, renowned fine sake, and gourmet food in your Room.

The building itself isn’t exactly new, and the room showed some noticeable signs of repairs… but I was truly able to spend a deeply relaxing time. The private open-air bath was wonderful and felt amazing, and the indoor bath was also bright and airy with large windows. But my favorite was actually the shared open-air bath. The water temperature was just right for a long, leisurely soak, and the scenery at night and in the morning felt completely different—both were truly captivating. I also used the foot acupressure massager that was set up after bathing, and it felt incredible! And above all, the meals! Both the meat and fish were delicious, and looking at the course as a whole, there wasn’t a single moment where I thought “I wish they had this too”—it was completely satisfying from start to finish. I couldn’t believe you can enjoy food of this quality with a course priced at just under 13,000 yen these days. Having dinner served in the room made it even better… And being able to place orders by smartphone was so convenient. Most of all, the smile of the staff member who brought everything to us—it genuinely soothed me. I could go on forever about what I loved… The welcome sweets on arrival were delicious, the coffee available throughout our stay was great… and then there’s the rooftop! I’ll never forget spending time on that quiet, open rooftop terrace. The futon bedding had a nice weight to it so I slept soundly—I’m beyond satisfied. It made me think: I definitely want to stay again. Oh—but next time I’ll choose a room with an en-suite toilet! Haha. Thank you very much for everything!
